Introduction

21 November 2014, we went to a site visit which was organized by our

measurement lecturer, Ms Ang. The site is located very near to Taylor’s

University Lakeside Campus which is the D’Latour construction site. We

gathered at the entrance of the site before we get in the site at 9.00am. While all

the lecturers and students get ready, we went into the site with our safety

helmets. Then we were briefed by the safety officer of the site about the safety

precautions in the site. This was essential to ensure our safety. About 10am, we

started our site visit. During the site visit, Mr Tang who is from Pasukhas

Construction SDN BHD had briefly explained the building to us. He provided

many information for us about the building. The whole site visit took us about

45min. We were only allowed to go to the car park of the building because it was

safer as the structural work in this level was partially completed.

This project is consists of 1 block of 27 storey of Duplex Design Soho and

23 storey of service apartment. Below are the project titles:

Objective

Below are the objectives of this site visit:

1. To help us understand the basics of the construction process.

2. To let us understand the practical aspect of construction techniques in

comparison to the theory aspect in books and its application on site.

3. Exposure to actual working environment on site including uncertainty

circumstances e.g. weather.

4. Ability to communicate with the construction team members on site and to

see the importance of teamwork in the building team.

5. Witness the usage of construction equipment on site including mechanical

plants.

6. Explore and identify various types of bui lding materials and technology on

site.

7. Awareness of the importance of safety on site and understanding of safety

problems and site conditions.

8. Recognize the items measurable for sub-structure and reinforced concrete

frame works.

Content/ Technical Observations

When I reach the site, the very first thing I saw is the temporary

accommodation cabin of workers. Then, we gathered in front of the meeting

room of the construction site and listen to the safety precaution briefing by En.

There were quite a number of independent scaffoldings were located outside of

the building. There was also a temporary staircase made by the scaffolding to

allow the worker to climb up to the upper floor. Then, we started our site visiting

by following him into the car park of the building where the structural work of the

building was completed. Then I saw many types of building materials like

cements, mortals, bricks and reinforcement bars. Along the journey, he had

explained to us the structure of the building to us and the cost of the building.

6

Then, we also saw numerous of temporary works (formwork) in the

building to support incomplete concrete work. There are a few types of formwork

which include table formwork and beam formwork. The materials of these

formworks are metals and timbers.

The benefits of using table formwork are easy and rapid installation on a

large area. Besides, a good quality of surface finishes also can be made by using

this type of formwork. Beam formwork has advantages of shock proof and high

dimensional stability.

There was only one type of scaffolding was used in the site which was the

independent scaffolding. This type of scaffolding does not rely on building for

support. The scaffolding that we found the site all were made by metal. It can be

supported by itself. It is durable and can be reused for many times. Besides, it is

also easy to be set up.

However, there are a few disadvantages for this type of scaffolding which

is the initial cost of the scaffolding is high. Besides, it also heavier than other type

of scaffolding. Moreover, extra cares shall be taken for the poles protected when

not in use.

Mr Tang told us that this building was built with mainly grade40 concrete. He

explained to us, mostly high-rise buildings will be using concrete that are with

higher grade such as grade 30 and above. This is to ensure the concrete is able

to sustain the loads in building and also the building itself. Grade 40 concrete

which have a specified characteristic compressive strength of 40N/mm2 at 28

days. This shows the concrete is a high strength concrete but it is more

expensive than the concrete with a lower grade.

Mr Tang who is the engineer of the site states that the concrete that is

more than grade30 should be sufficient to support the building, I would like to

suggest grade 35 concrete as an alternative grade of concrete. It could lower the

cost of the building, yet most importantly it is sufficient to support the building.

After that, we went outside of the building and have a look on the place of

the reinforcement bar where it is cut and bend. Finally, our site visit had come to

the end.

Learning Outcomes/ Conclusion

First of all, I would like to thank Ms Ang for organizing this site visiting trip.

It exposes to us the actual surrounding of a construction site to us. This is the

first time I could grab this opportunity to visit a construction site. From this site

visit, I gain a lot of informative knowledge that could not be learning from books. I

had seen numerous of things during the site visit.

I had seen a lot of building materials and construction technology in the

building such as like cements, and reinforcement bars, scaffolding and more.

This let me understood the materials what we always measured in the

measurement looks like and how the material was used in the construction. I also

understood that the different type of construction technology that is used in the

construction site to control the cost of the building. For an example, a different

type of grade of concrete is used in construction to suit the specification of the

building.

Furthermore, I also learnt that safety first is the most important element in

a construction site. We must always be vigilance and be careful while we walk in

the site. We must have taken the entire precaution step before entering a site like

wearing a safety helmet and a pair of covered shoes. The construction site may

have a lot of sharp left over material could injure our leg. By following the

precaution steps, this could help to protect us and minimize the threat as at any

time dangers could be happens in a construction site.

Apart from that, I also learnt that communication is an essential element in

construction industry. There were numerous of workers in the construction site.

To ensure the construction process is smoothly, a good communication skill must

be indicated. Besides, working as a team also an important moral value should

be imposed on everyone. A building required plenty of man power to be

completed.

11

All in all, this is a very good experience and meaningful site visit which had

given many benefits to me. Besides, it helps me to get prepared for my future

career to work in a construction site and also to be a professional and trained

quantity surveyor.
