RUBBISH TODAY,RESOURCETOMORROWStages 1 to 3 – 45 to 60 minutes

This interactive unit explores the what, whyand where of household waste throughhands-on problem-solving activities anddiscussions that will explore and expandstudents understanding by investigating:

• What goes in each bin – the good, the badand the ugly (and it’s mostly ugly);

• What next? Where it all goes and whathappens to it;

• Waste and the World– the impacts on theenvironment if waste isn’t managedcorrectly.

SCHOOL WASTEAUDIT*

Stage 3 only – 90 minutes

Schools produce a lot of waste, most of whichcan be recycled or composted. The SITAEducation Team are available to run a schoolwaste audit. Students will help sort andclassify waste, weigh and record results,report on their findings and develop strategiesfor reducing the overall amount of wasteproduced in the school, as well as improvingrecycling and composting rates!

All protective equipment provided.

SMARTSHOPPINGStages 1 to 3 – 45 minutes

Smart Shopping focuses on reducingpackaging waste at the source, by makingsmart decisions while shopping for everydayitems.

Students will learn about rigid, flexible andcombination packaging: the pros and cons ofbuying in bulk (as opposed to individuallywrapped convenience foods and products),what can and can’t be recycled, and wheredifferent kinds of waste are likely to end up.

LIFE (BI)CYCLESStages 2 to 3 – 45 minutes

Many of the items we use every day are madeup of several different materials. Thisworkshop examines a common item (such asa bicycle) and looks at what it is made of,where the raw materials have come from, andwhat happens at the end of its life.

This workshop will enhance studentsunderstanding and awareness of thematerials which are used to make the thingswe use every day, how these materials wereproduced or derived, and the ways in whicheveryday items can be broken down andturned into useful new products.

THE WORLDBENEATH OURFEETStages 1 to 3 – 45 to 60 minutes

Composting is nature’s way of recyclingorganic material. We can copy nature’sexample by composting at home or at school,or through kerbside organics collectionservices.

The World Beneath our Feet explores nature’srecycling system by getting up close andpersonal with the bugs and critters in the soil.Students will use magnifying glasses and amicroscope to study bugs and how they breakdown organic materials, and to learn how thishappens both in a backyard compost bin andon an industrial scale.

CLOSING THE LOOPON ORGANICSStages 1 to 3 – 45 minutes with presentation

Kids love watching things grow and thisworkshop provides them with a goodunderstanding of the three R’s – Reduce,Reuse and Recycle. Students will create asmall self-sustaining greenhouse usingrecycled organics and bottles which they cantake home and watch grow while learninghow to close the loop on organics.

A LARGE PROPORTION OF THE WASTE WE SEND TOLANDFILL IS MADE UP OF RECYCLABLE PACKAGING –MORE THAN WE MIGHT THINK!

KNOW YOUR PRODUCTOVER HALF OF THE WASTE WE PRODUCECONSISTS OF ORGANIC MATERIALS WHICH CAN BETURNED INTO A VALUABLE RESOURCE – COMPOST!BUT ONLY IF IT IS PLACED IN THE RIGHT BIN, ANDNOT MIXED UP WITH OTHER NON-COMPOSTABLEMATERIALS.

COMPOSTING CRITTERSWE ALL PRODUCE WASTE, BUT NOT MANY OF USKNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO IT AFTER WE PUT IT INTHE BIN. FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT THROUGHOUR RUBBISH TODAY, RESOURCE TOMORROWINTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP.

WHAT A WASTE!

*Rubbish Today, ResourceTomorrow workshop must becompleted first before undertakinga School Waste Audit.
