SPRING FLING – Are you going? I hope so! It is second only to our year end

Christmas Dinner Dance. At the SPRING FLING there will be Wonderful Food,

Delicious Drinks and most importantly. There will be all of You. LET’S ALL

ATTEND.

There will not be a meeting in May. Why, you ask? THE SPRING

FLING.

I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A Big Hug and Kisses to all on Mother’s

Day. We Love You All.

Here then is a Prayer for All:

Gracious God - we are growing old.

Keep us from the fatal habit of thinking that we must say something on

every subject.

Release us from craving to straighten out everybody’s affairs.

Make us thoughtful but not moody, helpful but not bossy.

Keep our mind free from the recital of endless details; give us wings to

get to the point.

Seal our lips on our aches and pains – love of rehearsing them is becom

ing sweeter as the years go by.

Teach us the glorious lesson that occasionally we may be mistaken.

Keep us reasonably sweet; we do not want to be Saints … some of them

are so hard to live with … but a sour old person is one of the crowning

works of the devil.

Give us the ability to see good things in unexpected places and talents in

The April (Friday the 13th) walk, led by Bob Wolf,

was not only lucky but highly successful. Unfortu

nately, neither my nor Bob’s memories are suffi

cient to accurately list large number of participants

who enjoyed this beautiful walk during an inter

lude in the much needed rain, and post walk con

vocation. But special mention goes to Anna Freitas.

Although Paul was out of town, Anna joined the

group for both walk and convocation. Though

Paul was missed, Anna more than compensated.

The Friday April 27 walk which was supposed to

be led by John Riordan met at the Lafaye�e com

munity center and walked on the Lafaye�e-Moraga

trail toward Moraga. This high grass, pollen filled

walk, was highlighted by a short-sleeved Dan

figured out how to do it). Participants David and

Colleen Geary, Art and Mary-Alice Donaldson,

Dan and Andrea Green, Susan and Joel White, en

joyed a post-walk convocation at an excellent but

small new venue, Home place, in Moraga.

The walk on Friday, May 12, will be led by new

member Essie Naddaf. We will meet at 8:15am at

the Museum of the San Ramon Valley (AKA rail

road museum) 205 Railroad Avenue Danville

( Corner of Railroad and Prospect Avenue). Please

There is no scheduled 2nd walk in May due to the

holiday week-end.

All walks are with or without significant others.

The significant other/spouse is also invited to par

ticipate even when the member is unable. Also,

members and/or spouses are invited to join the

post walk convocation even if they are unable to

participate is a particular walk.

Those from other sirs branches wishing to join this

mellow group, or to be added to the e-mail contact

The Wine Appreciation Group met at the home of

Bob Wolf in March. Wines from South America

were featured.

We try to meet on the fourth Thursday every other

month, however there will be no meeting in the

month of May.

Our next meeting is scheduled for July 26th at the

home of Jon Dickson.

CARMEL GOLF

OUTING We are rapidly approaching one of our most popu

lar events, the SIR Branch 116 Carmel Golf Outing.

It will be held again this year at the fantastic Car

mel Valley Ranch Golf Course, with two flights

participating in medal play on Wednesday and all

in a Scramble on Thursday. Wives and significant

others are encouraged to join us on the course.

Friends may also register to join us at this event.

This course provides us with a challenging and fan

tastic venue.

This year we will enjoy a ʺPlated Dinnerʺ provided

on Wednesday evening by our host Hotel, the Car

mel Mission Inn. Following dinner, the outside fire

pit provides an excellent location to enjoy a bever

age and swap Golf Stories. Non-golfers are encour

aged to join us for Wednesday eveningʹs Dinner.

Our next meeting is Wed May 23 at 8 AM at the

Legends Restaurant at the Diablo Creek Country

Club - Port Chicago Highway, 1/4 mile north of

Highway 4 in Concord.

Our speaker will be Jill Henderson, J. D., Contra

Costa Co. Deputy District A�orney, Elder Abuse

Unit. Spouses and significant others are always wel

come and may be especially interested in this topic.

The Legends opens at 7 AM. Come early and have a

leisurely breakfast with your colleagues prior to the

meeting.

All SIR members and guests are welcome, and in

deed encouraged, to participate in fishing trips as

well as a�end the monthly meetings. Next meeting

will be Thursday, May 24th, in the Legend Sports

Bar and Grill at the Diablo Creek Golf Course at

4050 Port Chicago Highway in Concord. Meeting

BIG FISH! Pete Gates landed the biggest trout of

the year from the shore at San Pablo Reservoir, an 8

½ lb. monster! But Rich Fiscina outdid him with a

monster 108 inch sturgeon by the Benicia Bridge. A

sturgeon that big is said to weigh about 400 lbs.

Also fishing for sturgeon were Tom Bol�, Paul

Dubow, Brion Bee�, Pedro Contreras, Steve Pol

lack, Thom Watkins, Stan Wong, Carl Moyer, Mar

io Moritorio, Bob Fieber, and Ron Lew. Ron fished

7 other times all over everywhere. Dave Carlson,

Carl Moyer, Bob Hillaker, Terry Miller, Phil

Scimonelli, Brion Bee�, and Stan Wong all caught

trout. Tom Kostik, Mike Corker, and Terry Miller

fished the delta for black and striped bass. At Pyr

amid Lake in Nevada Ernie Wong, Ken Konsak,

Don Mi�lesteadt, and Jerry Hicks all fly fished

from their ladders. Fishing from ladders at Pyra

mid Lake is a specialized way of fly fishing that is

unique to the lake. This is something that every

fisherman should try once in his life.

The Book Group met on Monday 23 April, 2018 to

discuss “How Democratic Is the American Consti

tution” by Robert Dahl. It is the author’s thesis that

for quite understandable reasons The Constitution

of the United States is deeply flawed in the struc

ture it gives the United Sates Senate, the composi

tion of the Electoral College, and the dual roles of

the President. Although he is pessimistic about the

prospects for fundamental change in this document

which is the basis of our Federal Government, he

asks that we review the shortcomings and histori

cal background of our constitution.

Garre� Girvan recommended the book while Rich

Black led the discussion with Mac McLoughlin,

John Kopchick, Richard Rossland, Bob Wolf, Tim

Tinnes, Paul Freitas, Richard White, Al Farbman,

John Riordan, Steve Bort, Joel White, Steve Barring

ton and Jerry Christopherson. .

While some faulted the book for style and content

all engaged in a spirited and informative discus

sion and awarded it 3.4 stars. The group next meets

at 10:15 on Monday, June 4 (note unusual meeting

date to accommodate Memorial Day) at Orinda

SIR Joe Collins passed away after a long illness this

past month. Prior to his health issues Joe enjoyed

his membership in the Branch.

SIR Troy Powell passed away after a wonderful

recovery with cancer. He was on new medication

but it failed to keep him in remission. Troy enjoyed

his golf and was a faithful member

SIR Norm Schoenfeld is recovering following hip

surgery . We look forward to his return to our

luncheons.

SIR Don Roberts has been discharged from the

hospital following a stroke. Don is faithfully doing

rehab to gain back his deficits. This was not his first

stroke but we hope it is the last. Get well soon Don.

Lunch & Bridge is offered on the 2nd and 4th Tues

days of the month, playing Chicago Style, at Diablo

County Club. Starts at 11:30 AM. All are welcome.

On Tuesday, April 17th we had our semi-annual

LADIES DAY Lunch & Bridge with 10 tables (40

players) playing. It was a fine afternoon and the

winners were Ben & Helen Yeraka, with Mike

Schneider and Linda Gross coming in second, Art

& Mary Alice Donaldson third, Marv & Barbara De

Hues fourth, and Dan & Andrea Green fifth. Ben

Yeraka managed the SIRʹs bridge game for many

years, many years ago.

There is also duplicate bridge every 1st Tuesday of

the month at the Concord bridge center.

Many choices for SIRʹs bridge. Please call if you

Callahan a 10!!!

Dick Callahan was outstanding as our April lunch

eon speaker bringing humor, stories, and moral

lessons. He stated that we as individuals control

our a�itude toward aging and we should never

give up. Dick has been the announcer for many

Bay Area sports and is presently the public address

announcer for the Oakland A’s. We can thank Don

Marini of our Speakers Commi�ee for ge�ing and

introducing Mr. Callahan.

Our speaker for June will be Captain Eric Christen

sen, formerly of the Lafaye�e police force and now

the Captain of Oakley police. Eric will talk about

scams that affect seniors. More on Eric next month.

We will have our Ladies Day “Spring Fling” for

May and thus no luncheon speaker. I hope that all

of you will invite your spouse or significant other

The presenter Frank May will review a brief histo

ry of Bitcoin and then, more importantly, discuss

the emerging technologies behind this phenomena.

2.0. What functionality will these technologies con

tribute and why are they important?

On Saturday, May 19th we will visit Mare Island

in Vallejo. We will meet at the Mare Island Muse

um (8th street & Railroad Ave. at 10:30 and gather

for a photo op then you can start your visit of any

of the following:

·Visit the Mare Island Museum

·Walk along Walnut Avenue and see the Historic officers Quarters

·Visit the Shoreline Heritage Preserve ·Visit the oldest Naval Chapel in the United States (St. Peterʹs Chapel)

·Visit the Oldest Golf course West of the Mississippi

·Drive around the Island

Mare Island was the nation’s first naval shipyard

on the West Coast, established in 1854 and ulti

mately closed in 1996. It is 5,000 acres and includes

commercial, residential and open space uses. The

views from many points of the island are spectacu

lar. Some great photo opportunities.

The plan is to meet at the Golf Course Café at 12:30

“Mexican Train” is a domino game which uses a

set of Double Twelve Dominoes. From 2 to 8 can

play. Each player draws 11 to 15 dominoes. The

number of dominoes each player draws depends

on the number of players. The object of the game is

to play all your dominoes. When you draw your

hand, you set it up so that the adjacent dominoes

match. During the play of a round there are things

that can derail your train so that you cannot play.

This can make the game very interesting and a lot

of FUN!

We had four players in a�endance. Paul Freitas

was a FIRST TIME WINNER with 247 points. Way

to go Paul. John Riordan came in second for the

third month in a row. John, you need to try harder.

The two remaining players, Alex Lutkus and Harry

Sherinian had scores ranging from 287 to 514. I

promised Harry that I would not reveal his score.

We meet at 10:00 AM on the second Wednesday of

each month, except when we have conflicts, at the

Church of Christ located at 500 Minert Road, Wal

nut Creek. Our next meeting is on May 2nd.

Our couples train session in March only included

Harry Sherinian and guest and my wife and I.

Harry won that evening. In April we had four cou

ples, Acamoʹs, Maddenʹs, Krusemark and guest

and Sherinian and guest . Maryann Acamo was

the victor.

The next Couples Train is scheduled for May 24th.

I will be sending out notices. Let me know if you

SIR 116 9-Hole Golf Club membership is open to all

Branch members and guests regardless of your

golfing ability. We play every Wednesday starting

at 10:00am. We rotate playing Buchanan Fields-

Concord, Diablo Hills-Walnut Creek , and other 9

hole courses in the area.

The 9 Hole Golf Club is organized into a single

flight. The weekly Champion is the player with the

lowest net score. The weekly Champion is awarded

3 points, 2nd place 2 and 3rd place 1. The 2016 Cham

pion will be the golfer with the highest point total.

In December, we will again hold our 9 Hole Golf

Championship Tournament. The Tournament will

be 3 rounds of golf. One round at each of the cours

es we play. The Tournament Champion will be the

golfer with lowest net total for 2 rounds. If a partic

ipant plays all 3 rounds, he can choose which 2

rounds will count.

We have an active golf organization consisting of

18-hole and 9-hole groups. A small annual dona

tion is required to play in either group.

The 18-hole group plays once a week in a Tourna

ment format with play alternating between local

courses and courses that may be 10 to 50 miles

away.

In addition to the Tournament format, Special

Events such as Match Play, Best Ball, Scramble, and

others are also periodically scheduled.

Those playing in the 18-hole group must be mem

bers of the Northern California Golf Association

(NCGA) and establish a handicap index. You may

join the NCGA through our SIR club or through

another club.

Foursomes in both the 18-hole and 9-hole groups

are arranged so that players can meet and enjoy

playing with most, if not all, the other players in

the branch.

All our events are listed in the Trampas Topics and

on our web site at branch116.org/116-golf. Join up

with us and enjoy outings with a great bunch of

guys at some great courses with reasonable prices.

well with each of the three winning a “closest-to-

the-hole” in their respective golfing groups. Un

fortunately, even though their first shots were all

close to the hole, two of them recorded a bogie (3

pu�s).

Rules of A�endance & Membership for SIR Branch 116

RULE 100. A member shall be notified in writing and/or telephone by his Branch of the pending termination

of his membership should he be responsible for any of the following:

·Miss three (3) consecutive regular luncheon meetings without having been excused by contacting the designated Branch A�endance person prior to the meeting date.

· Did not a�end one-half of the regular luncheon meetings within the previous twelve consecutive month period. NOTE: Excused meetings cannot be included to achieve the minimum a�endance.

· All legitimate alternatives to termination shall be explored. The member’s response may suggest an alternative to termination such as inactive status.

RULE 101. Certification of a�endance by a member at another Branch meeting will be considered as a credit

to his a�endance record. Individual Branches may limit the number of make-ups during a 12-month period.
