“EURO LOCKS”What is a “Euro Lock”?This is a typical Euro Lock. Some are more secure than others. Normally, they are used in UVPC doors and on patio doors. They can be recognised by the shape of the unit that protrudes from the door. Some have keyways on both sides, others only on one side. Keys for a standard Euro Lock have a single serrated side. Although the lock looks substantial, the basic version can be purchased for less than £5.

What are the problems?1. SNAPPINGOn the basic Euro Lock it is possible to snap the barrel by putting a tool on the part of the lock that protrudes from the door. Then, by exerting pressure on it, the lock snaps at its weakest point, around the central screw, it can be extracted and the door opened.

2. BUMPINGOn a basic Euro Lock it is possible to produce a simple key that can be put in the lock and “bumped” so that the shock of the impact lines up the levers and allows the key to be turned and the door unlocked. This method can also be used to relock the door.

What is the solution?Do you think a lock that costs less than £5 is suitable to protect the value of your house and contents? A replacement Euro Lock that is snap proof and bump proof will cost approximately £35.

Theft from unattended vehicles is still a problem in the Harrogate district: it is a crime that depends on a clear opportunity. It is also a disruptive crime...

CYCLE

l Always use a good quality lock and security cable.

l Use the cycle passport - go to www.saferharrogate.org.uk for more details.

l Mark all parts of your bike with a UV marker and postcode.

Remember to mark or register your property FREE at: www.immobilise.com

How to lock your bikel Use a good quality lock, or even two for extra protection.

A combination of a strong D-lock and a security cable is an effective way to safeguard your bike. Many people lock their expensive bikes with a cheap, poor quality lock which is easily broken. Ask yourself, is the value of your lock comparable to the value of your bike?

l Lock your bike in a suitable place - a well-lit, highly visible location, preferably where other bikes are locked - never leave your bike in an isolated place.

l Always secure your bike to something that cannot be broken easily, removed or lifted up. Don’t lock to chain link fences, wooden posts or small trees - a proper bike rack is best.

l Lock the frame, front and back wheel together to the object you lock your bike to.

l Ensure that the lock is tightly fastened, so that it’s not hanging loose. Position the keyhole facing down so it is harder for a thief to access.

l Remove all accessories (such as lamps, saddle, pump and saddlebag/panniers).

l Fifty per cent of stolen bikes are taken from homes (from a garage, shed or garden).

l As cycling increases in popularity, the market for stolen bikes increases too.

l Lock it whenever you leave it - it may take you a minute to secure your bike but a thief needs only seconds to steal an unlocked bike.

The Harrogate district is a low crime area. You don’t need to turn your shed into a fortress but you should make improvements to secure the value of items you have stored in it.
