The ever-so-talented buckskin mare and pilot Pete Oen have had a dream year on the cloverleaf pattern and they added yet another championship to their very extensive resume: AQHA World Show Junior Barrel Racing Champions. The 5-year-old ‘buckskin unicorn’, as she is more famously known, is by Frenchmans Guy and out of Perks Dashing Jet who is by Dash For Perks. “Stella”, as she is known around the barn, is owned by Cathy Geary of Wadsworth, Ohio, and has over $130,000 in lifetime earnings from this year alone. “She truly is a unicorn,” Oen said. “She has made this year incredibly wonderful and such a fun ride. I truly am so thankful for Cathy for giving me such an opportunity!” Prior to the World Show, Oen kept to his usual routine with “Stella”. Oen explained that she rarely gets worked on the pattern and never gets ran through the pattern at home. “She hasn’t had a very extensive season honestly. We only go to the races that matter and we don’t take her to any weekly jackpots. She gets ridden at the house and I will only take her around the bar- rels once before heading to a futurity or event.” Going almost straight from the JBQH Futurity in Waco to Oklahoma City for the World Show, Oen wanted to make sure that “Stella” got as much rest as she deserved. “We left Waco Sunday morning and once we got home, she was turned out to pasture so that she could decompress before head- ing to OKC the following evening,” Oen explained. “We got to the arena at 11:00 pm Monday evening, when we had our open arena. I worked her 3 times and called it good. She is so easy, I can always rely on her to show up to play.” In the first round Oen and “Stella” had some ground trouble that caused the gritty mare to slip several times but still made a respect- ful run which placed them 10th in the round. “Overall the ground conditions were not ideal. She slipped three times on the first barrel, slipped leaving the second barrel and had a good third barrel. She tried her heart out and did what she could do with the conditions.” Posting a time of 17.261-seconds was good enough to get them back to the finals which would be a clean slate. Second on the ground in the finals, Oen was hoping that it would make for a better track. “The ground was certainly prepared better in the short round. We had a good first barrel, a fantastic second barrel and a good third. She turned it so hard that we clipped it leaving it, I let go of the reins to grab the barrel to keep it from falling. Once I looked up and realized where we were going, I was shocked to see that we were veering closer to the wrong side of second. From that moment I just focused on staying on course and to the left of the second barrel!” With somewhat of a close call, the dynamic duo shut the clock off with a 16.59, one of the fastest runs of the week. “I actually thought that our time would be beat because there were still some very nice horses left to run, so I led Stella back to our stall to give her a drink of water and let her catch her air.” With the next closest time to his being a 16.715, Oen quickly discovered that he and “Stella” had won the Junior Barrel Racing Championship! Ground Zero Equine Surfaces to Handle Arena Prep at BFA
Ground Zero Equine Surfaces looks forward to handling arena preparation and surfaces at the upcoming Barrel Futurities ofAmerica. Ground Zero will coordinate with the BFA to ensure high quality performance surfaces for high quality performance animals.“We have been coordinating with BFA representatives for months,” said Jessica Cummings, Marketing Director for Ground Zero, “and we look forward to continuing this collaboration to ensure a suc-cessful and safe event.” Ground Zero handles arena resurfacing and arena construction. The company offers 45 years of combined experience in the horse industry. “We are especially grateful to Kiser Arena Specialists for allowing us to take part in this event,” said Cummings. “We can adapt any arena to any discipline,” said Cummings. “The surface for barrels is different than jumping or reining. It is necessary to keep in mind the type of footing these horses need to perform at their best.” John Jamison, President of Ground Zero, personally oversaw preparations for the arena and surfaces for the National Finals Rodeo in 2016. Ground Zero looks forward to returning to the NFR in Las Vegas in 2017 and the Dodge National Circuit Finals in Kissimmee, Florida in 2018.
All-around race heats up at WNFR When the contestants arrive at the upcoming Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER, Dec. 7-16, there will be plenty of drama to see who will win gold buckles. The coveted all-around gold buckle race at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas will be full of intrigue. Trevor Brazile will ar-rive in Las Vegas leading the WEATHER GUARD® PRCA World Standings for all-around with $243,760. Tuf Cooper, Brazile’s brother-in-law, is second in the all-around with $230,022. Brazile overtook Cooper for the all-around lead with his solid performance at the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping in Mulvane, Kan., Nov. 10-11. Brazileplacedsecondinthefinalsteerropingstandingswith$126,538.Heearned$63,273attheNFSR.CooperqualifiedforhisfirstNFSRin2017andplaced12thinthefinalstandingswith$60,107. Cooper won $14,891 at the NFSR. Brazile, who has won a PRCA record 23 world championships, has captured 13 all-around gold buckles, his last coming in 2015. Cooper,meanwhile,ismakinghisfirstrunatwinninganall-aroundtitle. Brazile and Cooper likely will decide the all-around championship as they are both competing in tie-down roping at this year’s WNFR.

Dreaming Of FooseCourtesy of AQHA.com Our condolences go out to Sharin Hall on the passing of Dream-ing Of Foose. Dreaming Of Foose was injured while competing in the junior barrel racing on November 15 at the Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show in Oklahoma City. Dreaming Of Foose was immediately examined by Dr. Sherry Johnson of Equine Sports Medicine, the onsite show veterinarian, at the Lucas Oil World. “The mare became acutely lame during her barrel racing run and was provided emergency medical care. It was quickly determined to be in the horse’s best interest to be transported to a referral hospital. She was loaded into a trailer following medication admin-istrationtoeasethepainandhelpcontrolinflammation,butpassedaway en route,” stated Dr. Dave Frisbie of Equine Sports Medicine. As an association of horsemen we understand the depth of this terrible loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with Sharin during this time .
Our (Barrel Racing Report) thoughts and prayers are with Sharin on the loss of her amazing mare Dreaming of Foose. She was a special mare, a true winner that will be missed by everyone in the industry.

By Hope Raley Jackson, Tennessee barrel racer Cassie Morton has been running barrels since she could walk. The 35-year-old wife to husband Josh works a full-time job all day and when she is done with that, she comes home to her other full-time job: her horses. Morton might have to possibly re-prioritize her two jobs and hit the rodeo trail after outrunning some serious competition and winning this year’s AQHA World Championship Senior Barrel Racing Title! Morton jockeyed 8-year-old palomino gelding BNF Golden Firewater “Andy” to victory after putting together two very respect-able and equally fast runs. The big, stocky gelding is by KY Finest Firewater and out of Miss Golden Ball by Golden Oak Holiday. Raised by Morton’s good friend Linda Simons, veteran futurity trainer Marne Loosenort acquired “Andy” and started his career in barrel racing. “I bought Andy in the fall of his 4-year-old year, and it took me 6 months to talk my husband into buying him, because at the time, he was not super impressed with him,” laughed Morton. Although it may have taken longer than what she had wanted, her sweettalkingpaidoff andshewasfinallytheownerof abeautifulpalomino corvette! “IknewfromthefirsttimethatIswungalegoverhimthatIhadto have him! He is the most laid-back barrel horse that I have ever had. There isn’t much that bothers him.” As a true competitor, Morton understands the importance of be-ing able to take the good with the bad. “It hasn’t been easy and I think most people would’ve given up on him a long time ago, but I could never give up on him. I wouldn’t trade him for anything,” Morton said.

If you are a barrel racing fan or rodeo fan, the holidays mean family, food and of course the NFR! The next three weeks we will preview a dynamic group of barrel racers that make up the 2017 Top 15 headed to the Thomas & Mack! It was an amazing year of barrel racing with Tiany Schuster com-ing into the NFR with a regular season record of $250,378. In a late season battle to qualify to the NFR, it took a couple big weeks and a littlelucktofinishtheseasonforKimmieWalltoqualifytoher2ndNFR in a row in the 15th position with $76,294. It was an exciting year beginning to end. This year’s NFR will be the 3rd straight NFR with the $10 million total purse and $1.1 to the barrel racers alone. With the go rounds paying $26,231 per night and the average paying $67,269 it is really a wide open race even though Schuster cruises into the NFR with a nearly $65,000 lead. Last year, Amberleigh Moore (#4 in the World in 2017) lit up the Thomas & Mack winning an NFR Record $187,692 and moved from #15 in the world to missing the world title by only $11k and being the Reserve World Champion. In 2017 each go round will again pay $26,231 for 1st, $20,731 for 2nd, $15,654 for 3rd, $11,000 for 4th, $6,769 for 5th, $4,231 for 6th. The average over 10 rounds will pay $67,269 for 1st, $54,577 for 2nd, $43,154 for 3rd, $31,731 for 4th, $22,846 for 5th, $16,500 for 6th, $11,423 for 7th, and $6,346 for 8th. It is an interesting mix of talent this year at the NFR. Brittany Pozzi-Tonozzi and Lisa Lockhart both are competing at their 11th NFR;buttherestof thefieldallhave3NFRQualificationsorless.Infact,thereare6-1sttimequalifiersthisyearagainjustlikelast year. It will also for the most part be a new bunch of horses with just a few familiar faces. Of course, Lisa Lockhart will again bring the fan favorite Louie (An Oakie With Cash) and last year’s star Paige (CP Dark Moon) and Amberleigh Moore will be there and a few others will return, but get ready to see a bunch of young, extremely talented horses just starting to hit the national stage. This year’s NFR runs from December 7-16, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV. The rodeo is live each night on CBS Sports Network at 10 pm ET/7 pm PT. Conrado: Tibbie has a presence that is seen by anyone who steps foot into her little world. She makes it blatantly clear we are all here to serve her & that she’s the boss. I think her commanding person-ality shows in the arena. It’s only happening if it’s her idea. Famey is gritty & has a huge ATTITUDE but can also be so sweet to me--- not so much other people! I think what sets her apart is her heart & she has a phenomenal mother like my other two mares (JLo & Tib) the materenal line in my horses is so important. Famey is scrappy & resourceful. I think JLo’s stride & reliability is what sets her apart. I have so muchtrustinthatmare&whenitcamedowntothefinalpushof making the NFR I was so unbelievably comfortable on her back inaknifefightforaqualification,itgavemeanedgebeingonthebubble. She is so honest all the time!

Mostly we just do a lot of exercises to remind them of softness during the week. We will show them the pattern 2-3 times a week.

I worried about worrying. I’m sure my friends wanted to choke me sometimes. I was like Eeyore, Winnie the Poohs’ friend. “This will never work. We will never make it.” It sounds funny to me now, but I was really messed up and didn’t know how to stop. BUT GOD. When you look to God for answers, He never comes up short. He has the answers and He wants us to have them. It seemed like I had to
quote that scripture 5000 times a day there for a while. Then one day I realized that I had learned to cast my care on God like I Pet. 5:7 tells us to. I could sleep nights. I could breathe during the day. It was wonderful. God is good to all who call on Him. A memorized scripture is like a tool in your tool belt. You can whip the right one out for the job at hand and win!
