APHA BREEDERS' TRUST STALLION SUBSCRIPTION FEES MADE MORE

AFFORDABLE FOR 2017

2016 IRHA/NRHA FUTURITY

APHA is making it more affordable than ever before to subscribe your stallion to the Breeders' Trust with modified fees. The modifications were based on recommendations from the Long Range Planning Committee and approved as a program change by the Executive Committee at their October 2016 meeting.

Starting with the 2017 subscription year, stallion sub-scription fees are now due in two installments, with the total not to exceed the stallion's highest advertised breeding fee for 2017.

First Installment -- Initial Enrollment Fee$150 for APHA stallions or $300 for Quarter Horse or

Thoroughbred stallionsDue by January 31, 2017 (late fees will apply if postmark not met)

Second Installment -- Based on mares listed on the stal lion breeding report

$100 per mare on SBR for APHA stallions; $200 per mare on SBR for Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred stallions

Due by November 30, 2017 (late fees will apply if postmark not met)

Payment "caps" at the stallion's highest advertised stud feeExamples:APHA Stallion 1 has a stud fee of $1,500. His owner

pays $150 on January 31. He breeds 20 mares, and his second installment payment is $1,350 (total fees capped at his $1,500 stud fee).

APHA Stallion 2 has a stud fee of $750. His owner pays $150 on January 31. He breeds three mares, and his second installment payment is $300.

If a stallion owner does not subscribe his stallion or defaults on the second payment of the subscription fee, one of the mare owners or resulting foal owners may request a waiver (signed by the stallion owner) that allows them to subscribe the stallion by paying the applicable fees or remaining fees without penalty through May 15 of the foal-ing year. After the applicable fees are paid, the person who paid the fees will be considered the stallion subscriber for that breeding year and will receive the subscriber's portion of the Breeders' Trust payout for all foals nominated from that breeding year.

Analysis of the 2015 Breeders' Trust revenue by the Long Range Planning committee shows that, based on the new subscription guidelines, 33% of stallion owners will pay less and about 67% will pay the same as they do currently to participate in the Breeders' Trust. Their goal is to attract more Breeders' Trust subscribed stallions, thereby mak-ing more foals eligible for the Breeders' Trust program, by nurturing, encouraging and supporting breeders.

For more information about the new Breeders' Trust stal-lion subscription guidelines for 2017, contact Director of Breeders' Trust Candy Jebavy at [email protected].

AIQH 3-Years-Old Open & Non Pro Futurity Champions:

Giuseppe Prevosti and Claudio Risso

Giuseppe Prevosti guided Snap N Style to

the podium of the AIQH Futurity 3 Yrs Old Open Championship with a score of 215 that was sufficient to maintain this pair’s lead among the competition’s 13 partici-pants, after an early domination in the go-round with a highly respectable 216. This gelding is owned by Mattia Camisi and was bred at Camisi QH from the stables’ own stallion and mare, Stylishlite and Snapple Surprises.

The results of their efforts were clearly visible in the first go when the little gelding put in a power-ful spin. ‘

Claudio Risso proved that experience and class make a winning pair as he rode into the top spot of the AIQH Futurity Non Pro 3-Year-Old. The gelding “Warhol” is son of Roberta’s Stable NRHA World Champion and Reserve Champion sire Spat A Blue and the facility’s excellent brood-mare RS Hollywood Hglo. This year’s Futurity show has already seen two full brothers of RS Warhol Blue slide onto the podium: RS Blue Hglo took the Reserve Champion at Levels 3 and 2 of the Futurity Open 4-year-olds between the reins of Steve Ouellet, and RS Nebbiolo Blue IRHA Year End Intermediate Open Co-Champion ridden by Dario Carmignani. Claudio is especially proud of this particular son of these outstanding parents as he per-sonally took responsibility for inseminating the mare on a

memorable April evening after his return from a marathon car journey lasting over 26 hours. Claudio describes this gelding as a ‘coccolone, che è facile da montare’ and expects him to fulfill a bright potential in the future.

Futurity 3-year-old Non Pro Finals: history repeats itself

A strong impression of “déjà vu” in the great

Final of the Futurity 3-Year-Old Non Pro for the Champions, with a splendid Chiara Bartoletti on her ever-improving “Olivia”, officially known as Holly Jolly Jaba, on the top step of the podium at Levels 4, 3 and 2, and Greta Sordelli dominating

Level 1 with Riconquistador. At the end of a run that the rider herself described with

words such as “fear”, but above all “happiness”, Chiara burst into tears when greeted just outside the gate of the oval

arena by her trainer and mentor Adriano Meacci, whose eyes were also shining with emotion. Since that first Futu-rity in 2007, when at the age of 15 the beautiful Tuscan rider conquered not only the podium at both the Intermediate and Limited Non Pro levels but also the record as the youngest winner of a Big One up to that time (a record that held until last year), master and pupil have come a long way together. In fact, Chiara’s show record has length-ened considerably over the years with many victories including: 2008 NRHA of Germany Breeders Futurity Non Pro Champion, 2009 NRHA European Futu-rity Non Pro Level 3 e 4 Reserve Cham-pion, FEI European Reining Champion-ship Young Rider Team Silver Medal and Individual Gold Medal, 2010 NRHA Eu-ropean Futurity Non Pro Level 3 Reserve Champion, 2011 FEI European Reining Championship Young Rider Team Gold Medal, and more recently 2016 IRHA/NRHA Derby Non Pro Champion Levels 4, 3 and 2 aboard Spark Magnetic Olena. This university student from Calenzano entered the show ring with Holly Jolly Jaba, a filly by Jaba Oak out of Smart Dolly Hickory, bred by a pillar of Italian Reining, Jimmy Sani, who Chiara and her family met when they purchased the mare and with whom they have since become friends. In fact, the reiner wishes to dedicate this win not only to Olivia, Adriano all his staff and of course her Mum and Dad, but also Jimmy himself.

Pattern number 9, that selected for the final, is not one of Chiara’s favourites: ‘I don’t like the patterns that start with a stop in the centre because I tend to focus too much on avoid-ing finishing against the fence, and I find this distracting’. This evidently was not the case this time round, when she and her companion were right on target with just one slight hiccough on the last stop. After taking the leadership of the first go round with a 214, on which she improved in the final by no less than two and a half points, Chiara described how this mare that she considers ‘very serious, very “adult”, was purchased almost by chance while looking through Face-book». From her first “trial” competition, the 2016 TRHA Futurity where she won both the Non Pro and Intermedi-ate Non Pro categories, Olivia has continued to be a model of reliability and consistency , and between the reins of a non pro like Bartoletti, who has considerable experience in competitions despite her youth (24) and has always shown well with all her horses however different they were, really expressed herself well.

IRHA/NRHA Futurity 3-Year-Old Non Pro Level 4 Re-

serve Champions, just half a point away from the Champion pair, are Edo Bernardelli and Hollywood Gun Kid, a stallion by Hollywood Gun Dunnit x Miss Puro Kid, bred by Davide

Raffaelli. Edo showed a net improvement on the first go, climbing from 207.5 to 216 just a day after an ex-tremely pleasing win at this 2016 Futurity in the level 4 non pro competition for four-year-olds 4 while riding RS Blue Link. Edoardo has been competing in reining for six years and having tried his hand in many different equestrian dis-ciplines, has al-ready marked up a good number of successes de-spite being only twenty-five. He now trains inde-pendently at the family facility in Olgiate Comasco

as well as at Luga QH, having honed his skills under some of the most highly qualified Italian and American trainers. A number of titles stand out on his curriculum: 2012 NRHA European Derby Non Pro L3 Champion & L2/1 Reserve Champion and in 2014, those of NRHA European Futurity Non Pro L3 Reserve Champion and IRHA/NRHA Futurity Non Pro 4YO L3 Champion; finalist in many Italian and European special events; in 2015 Edo was part of the Gold-Medal winning Team Italy at the FEI European Champion-ships Senior in Aachen.

Greta exited the show ring, thrilled with her winning run and gave a “high five” to all those who had helped her so much to achieve this result: Guglielmo “Gulli” Fontana, to who she dedicated her victory together with parents, friends, and, of course, and above all, her great "Conqui". ‘I was se-riously worried about the spins, and was holding my breath all the time until both series were over,' she commented. ‘Was I expecting this win? I was optimistic, but after a slip on the stop in the right spin I almost lost hope.’ But, thanks to her legendary stubbornness and the crucial help provided

by Guglielmo, she had this great win in the bag.Despite her youth, Greta Sordelli withstood the pressure

of an excellent result in the first go-round, actually improv-ing on her original score by two and a half points, to finish on 214.5 in the final. The horses’s name, Riconquistador, perhaps held his destiny: he gained exactly the same posi-tions in the Final as those held after the preliminary round, because Greta is today along with the stallion by Conquis-tador Whiz and My Ricochet Bomb, bred by Remo Cardi, IRHA/NRHA Futurity Level 1 Non Pro Champion and Reserve Champion Levels 3 and 2. ‘The first time I saw Conqui he was still with his mother, at 5 months, and I fell in love straightaway: he had such long ears!’ explains the reiner. Greta had recounted after the go-round how she broke and trained the stallion herself until two months ago, but then moved to Luga QH where Guglielmo Fontana assisted her in adding the finishing touches. "Conqui" had already proved her ‘talent and a generous heart’ by winning the LR Pre-futurity and the title of Co-Champion Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro in the LR Futurity.

Greta has been competing in reining since 2008, hav-ing started out in barrel racing. Her first successes of note came in 2013 when she claimed the title of LR 3yo Futurity Intermediate and Limited Non Pro Reserve Champion and LR Year End Novice Horse Non Pro Reserve Champion. In

2014, she became IRHA/NRHA Futurity Non Pro 4YO L1 Champion & L2 Co-Champion.

Co-Reserve Champions at Level 1 were two young Ital-ian reiners, Giovanni Zucchi and Lisa Werdaner who both showed remarkable consistency in this 3-year-old Futurity, marking 210.5 in both the first go-round and in the final. Giovanni was partnered by his San Olena Broc, a mare by Steadys Dude out of Broc Olena Jo, bred by the Soc. Agr. Malincorda. Twenty-one years the age of this rider, of which the last five have seen Giovanni competing in reining competitions. While Giovanni’s father bred horses on the family farm, the passion for Quarter Horses was Giovanni’s own, and is now shared by all his family. He bought this mare as a year-old filly, and can be justly proud as he trained her himself: ‘There were no great difficulties but, in any case, if I had any doubts I could count on the support of Davide Brighenti who helped me out; in fact, I want to thank Davide, because in part I owe this victory to him. This was not my first Italian Futurity final, as I was among the Non Pro finalists in 2013 with a four-year-old, but this is undoubtedly my biggest success so far.’

At fifteen years, the youngest reiner placed this year in the Italian Futurity is Lisa Werdaner riding her Shine N Roll Spook, by Smart Spook out of Shining High Roller and bred by Greg Hill in Ohio, USA. ‘I went to the US with

my trainer Gennaro Lendi at the end of 2015 to find a horse for the Futurity 3-year-olds in Italy; we visited a number of breeders but eventually found this mare while at the NRHA in Oklahoma.’ Every time Lisa finds some time free from her studies she travels from her native Ortisei, in the north of Italy, to Tuscany to train with Gennaro Lendi, spend-ing school holidays there to sharpen her skills. Despite her youth, Lisa has already garnered a number of successes. In August 2016, Lisa brought home an excellent result with this mare taking the Level 1 Champion title with a score of 214 in the Austrian Futurity Non Pro; she was also a mem-ber of the Junior Team Italy that won a Silver medal at the FEI European Reining Championships in 2015 in Givrins. When commenting on this competition Lisa says: ‘It was a real thrill to enter this final at all four levels, but I was quite relaxed because this mare is as well behaved in the show ring as she is at home. She didn’t stop as powerfully as she can, but we concentrated on the circles and it went well. I want to thank all my family and my trainer for all their help and support.’

Futurity 4-year-old Non Pro: Bernadelli, Rivolta and Sodi take top positions

There were only six finalists for the 4-Year-Old Futurity

Non Pro Level 4, and the title was claimed by Edoardo “Edo” Bernardelli and RS Blue Link with a 209.5. Edo, a strong rider from Lombardy who took up reining six years ago having tried his hand in many different equestrian disciplines, has already marked up a good number of suc-cesses despite being only twenty-five. RS Blue Link is one of the many successful products to come out of Claudio Risso’s Roberta's Stable, son of the NRHA World Cham-pion and Reserve Cham-pion Spat A Blue and RS Linkwood Jac. Standing out among the triumphs of Bernardelli, who now trains independently at the family facility in Olgiate Comasco having honed his skills under some of the most highly qualified Italian and American train-ers, are the 2012 NRHA European Non Pro Derby titles Champion L3 & L2/1 Reserve Champion and 2014 NRHA European Futurity Non Pro Reserve Champion L3, IRHA/NRHA Non Pro Futu-rity Champion 4yo L3. A finalist in many Italian and

European special events, in 2015 Edo was also part of the Team Italy that won the Gold Medal at the FEI European Senior Championships in Aachen. Placed sixth after the first go (211), of the final Edo said: ‘It did not quite meet our expectations, but overall I cannot say it did not go well, as in the end we won ... The mare gave a good performance, truly honest, just as she was in the first go.’ Bought last year, RS Blue Link had been taken out only twice before the Futurity: ‘She’s a really generous mare, and I’m sure in the future she will have further success...’ concluded the rider.

IRHA/NRHA Futurity 4-year-old Non Pro Reserve Cham-pion is the combination Holly Jolly Whiz/Ettore Baldazzi (207.5), that had already posted the best score of level 1, 212.5, in the first go-round. Their performance in the final dropped a few points, but this did not prevent the rider from Bologna and his stallion by Wiz Ruf Peppy x Smart Dolly Hickory, bred and trained by Cristian Dalla Pozza who took this horse into the finals levels 4, 3 and 2 of the 2016 NRHA Futurity 4-year-olds, from winning the prestigious place of honour in what was actually his first Futurity. The horse is currently in training with Manuel Cortesi, and Ettore had previously marked up a victory in the ARER Futurity Non Pro.

Sliding onto the podium at Levels 3 and 2 was Fed-erica Rivolta on her Black Magic Master, daughter of the 2004 Italian Futurity Open Champion Master Snapper and Smokin Sailor Jazzy, bred by Roberto Cuoghi. Federica took her first steps in reining in her native Piedmont, but later travelled far and wide to develop her passion, first to Romagna where she trained with Pierluigi Fabbri, and later to Lombardy where she can now boast the assistance of two excellent professionals, Pierluigi Childo and Marco Pet-tinari at Ambrosini QH. ‘I have always been lucky enough

to work under the guidance of excellent trainers, though this meant moving around quite a bit’, commented Federica. She bought this mare in November 2015 directly from Cuoghi QH, and the pair made their first outing in May of this year in Lombardy before moving on in August to claim the titles for the Futurity Non Pro and Intermediate Non Pro, 4-year-old horses in Austria. Yesterday in Cremona the duo marked a convincing 216.5, rising from 210.0 in the go-round. ‘In the first go-round I was quite cautious; I wanted to perform a clean run above all. Unfortunately, I finished slightly off on the spin and this cost us a place in Level 4. For the final I decided to go beyond my comfort zone, and the horse listened to me; I pushed her, and she was with me all the way.’ Over the years, this 26-year-old rider has acquired considerable experience with the horse she defines as her “historic partner”, DB Day Of Return: 2009 Challenge Futurity Limited Non Pro Champion; Challenge Futurity Intermediate Non Pro Reserve Champion; Maturity limited and intermediate Non Pro finalist, 2013 IRHA Italian Cham-pionship Intermediate Non Pro Champion and 2014 IRHA Ladies Italian Championship Reserve Champion. After a year’s break to complete her degree in Economics, Federica is back in spotlight with her new partner.

Reserve Champion at Level 3 was Andrea Castrucci, own-er of the superlative KN Reining Resort in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma at Capalbio, who marked 211.5 riding KR Sweet Resolve. This gelding, owned by Natalia Gambino, is a product of one of the centre’s own mares, KR Smooth N Sweet and sired by Einsteins Revolution.

Susanna Sodi edged forward from her second place at level 1 after the go round with her Saturdaynight Mizzen to mark a 211.0 in the final and claim the titles of Champion Level 1 and Reserve Champion Level 2. This attractive gelding by Saturdaynight Custom out of Westcoast Miz-zen, bred by Ambrosini QH, is not new to the podium at Cremona having conquered the top spot in the Big One here last year, crowned Level 4 Champion between the reins of Pierluigi Chioldo. Susanna purchased “Mizzen” earlier this year, just 20 days before the 2016 Derby and immediately surpassed expectations, taking the title Level 1 Non Pro Champion in the May event, displaying courage and deter-mination for a Non Pro who is a relative newcomer to the world of reining. Her trainer Elio Simonini underlines the difficulties for any rider showing at this level: ‘It’s not easy to put yourself on the line, showing in an event like this, with all eyes focussed on you. Susanna is very commit-ted. By 8 o’clock she is at the stables ready to go, and she rides 6 or 7 horses every day.’ On the other hand, the neo-Champion from Lombardy is quick to recognise the help she has received from her team, thanking both her trainer and Alessandra Ischia. ‘You only get results like these when you have a strong team behind you,’ says Susanna, and she adds ‘I get told off quite a bit by my trainer, both at home and in competitions, but it’s evidently useful!’ Susanna

was attracted to reining by the horses, which she describes as ‘outstanding’. Certainly when looking to buy, Sodi is influenced by the horse’s show record, choosing among the strongest, but she emphasises that her emotional response is equally important. ‘I have to love a horse to buy it. With Saturdaynight Mizzen I had made the decision in the first five minutes; I just felt sure we would go well together.’

Just half a point behind Sodi at Level 1 was Giovanni Lugarà, owner and manager at Luga QH, riding Thelma Whiz. This mare is daughter of the late Topsail Whiz, the National Reining Horse Association's one and only $11 million sire, out of Kachina Oak Olena. The pair rose from a go-round score of 208 to complete the final on 210.5.

Go-round Futurity Open 4-year-olds: strike for Giacomo Poli and Doc Magic

Brown!

The 35-year-old Tuscan trainer Giacomo Poli Barberis, emerged undisputed leader after the go-round Open Futurity 4-year-olds, marking the best score in all four levels (219) to dominate a competitive pack of 69 pairs. With him in the enterprise was Doc Magic Brown (a gelding by Arc Magic Entreprise x Doc Sugar Brown) belonging to Patrizia Formi-cola and Riccardo Lo Iacono.

Giacomo, born in 1981, has been in reining for ten years, competing as a professional for the last five. He works as a trainer at his own centre, ASD Nuova 81 QH Comano Cavalli located in the town of Comano, in the of province Carrara, the city from which he comes. He already has a number of titles to his name including a Maturity title in 2014 and that of 2016 IRHA/NRHA Derby Level 1 Co-Champion (riding CF Frozen Smart Jaba). Along with Doc Magic Brown, a horse on only his fourth outing in the show ring, he conquered the TRHA Open Futurity 2016. Giacomo was on the lookout for a good subject for his clients, when Francesco Arrighi told him about this horse: the famous Italian trainer had ridden Doc Magic Brown for a few weeks as a two-year-old and had noted his talents before the horse was sold in the Czech Republic. As the gelding was still in that country as a three-year-old, he did not take part in the 2015 Futurity, returning to Italy only seven months ago to prepare for the four-year-old competition. ‘He is a rangy horse, so he initially had some trouble on the spin, which was soon smoothed out; we were able to fine-tune the stops only towards the end of his training as “closing up” is a bit more difficult for him because of his conformation. But he has never lacked any willingness to learn, and from a certain step on, everything came easy,’ Giacomo said. ‘I completed the go without pushing too much, to try to save energy,’ he adds, ‘looking more for a clean run than speed and giving Magic all the confidence he deserves and leaving him long on the reins: I could do it, because I know that he always waits for me, he always listens...’

Behind him by just half a point in Level 4 are three pairs ex aequo; the first is Sevenchexto-cash (gelding, Big Chex To Cash x Lil Chic Peppy, bred and owned by 7 Heaven Reining horse), ridden by Bernard Fonck, already L4 2015 Open Futurity Reserve Champion, 2016 Belgium 3 & 4 Year Old Futuri-ty Open Cham-pion and French 3 & 4 Year Old Futurity Level 4 Open Reserve Champion; the second is Desire Big Chex (stal-lion, Big Chex To Cash x Topsails Desire bred by Carlo Orsi and belonging to Franz Josef Braid), shown this year by Gennaro Lendi. This horse was co-go round leader at the Futurity in 2015 with Rudi Kronsteiner in the saddle. In fact, the third pair on 218.5 in this 2016 go-round is Kronsteiner and Vodoos Dr Tom owned by Milena Hess, by Shiners Vodoo Dr out of Br China Rose (bed by Patricia Blackeney Creson), previously 2015 IRHA/NRHA Futurity Open Level 4 finalists e 2016 NRHA Futurity 4-year-old Level 4 finalists.

The second best score of 216 in the go-round Levels 3 and 2, was marked by Docs Magic Hancock, a 2015 Futurity Open Finalist with Adriano Meacci who is showing him again this year. The stallion is the son of Docs Tivio Hancock x Snappy My Magic, bred by Andrea Parolari and owned by Elisa Pelucchini since 2016.

Lastly, ex aequo on 212.5, in second place in the go-round of the Open 4 Years Old Level 1 stand Sailor Whiz Ina and Fabio Alfonsetti (owner Antonio Zagaria) and Smart Remins Delmaso belonging to Giorgio Cestarollo and ridden by the only woman rider placed in this important eliminatory go-round of the 2016 IRHA/NRHA Futurity: Ilaria Pezzini, who was Limited non Pro Futurity Champion in 2006. In

fact, exactly 10 years ago she competed in her first Futurity as a young and excited no pro and won a category. Today she’s undertaking this great adven-ture as an open rider: young reiners ride on!

The 4 YO Futurity Champions for the

Quarter Horse Association

The AIQH Open Futurity 4 YO Championship title was awarded Saturday 12 November, in Cremona, at the end of the first go round of the IRHA/NRHA Futurity Open 4-year-old. Manuel Cortesi triumphed with PC Magnum Step Dream. The win came at the end of a go which saw him mark 218.0. The stallion, aka Cassano, by Magnum Chic Dream x Wimpys Precious Step, was bred at the Cortesi family’s facil-ity. The young rider from Romagna turned profes-sional in 2014 after a long and rewarding non pro career that brought many titles including two Italian Futurity Non Pro Championships , first in 2010 and later in 2013. After a third place in the Germany Breeders Futurity Limited Open 3 YO, in August this year the pair brought home the title of Open Cham-pion Level 3 at the Austrian Futurity.

Claudio Risso rode a stallion he bred himself, RS Moon Feo Jac (RS Great Jac Feona x RS Red Moon Olena) to clinch the podium of the AIQH Futurity 4 YO Non Pro with a smooth 216.0. Last year Marco Midili, trainer at Roberta's Stable, guided this stallion

through the final of the IRHA/NRHA Futurity Open level 4, then continued a productive career with him in open com-petitions in 2016: fourth ex aequo in level 3 of the NRHA Futurity 4 Years Old , IRHA/NRHA Open Derby finalist Level 3, and finally NRHA Germany Breeders Bit Futurity Reserve Champion last month.
