    EDITORIA

    Dear readers!

I am still the newbie here at simulator World and alsofairly new to the genre of simulators outside of flightsims. But I am slowly finding my feet and getting toknow the different products available. The one thingthat surprises me the most is the huge variety of si-mulator games available and what a huge array oftopics they cover.

For this issue alone I had to take control of a shipand became a fireman at an industrial estate. Ofcourse, we also cover the more common softwareproducts such as FSX. I was asked to test AerosoftsAirbus A320 Extended package. Not easy for some-one who has spent many hours on Boeing flight

decks.By being asked to test new software all the time I amconstantly being taken out of my comfort zone andasked to learn new technical details and new skills. This is probably the most enjoyable part of playingsimulators and if you are keen to widen your horizonI would urge you to look at some products you mightnot have considered before.

I certainly try to create a guideline for newcomers tocertain products and help them understand what isinvolved. So if you like the sound of anything I writeabout, dont be shy. Give it a go. So far I have always

    had a great time.

    Airport Ground Crew Simulation

Airport Ground Crew Simulation is an exciting pro-fession and technology simulation where you join ateam of airport ground control workers to experien-ce the important daily routine of servicing aircraftwhen they are parked at the terminal stand in readi-ness for take off or immediately after landing.

As a member of the airport ground Control crewyoull need to operate a selection of vehicles that willprepare aircraft for their long flights around the wor-ld. Whether they are heading to the sunny shores ofFlorida or to the brisk wintery areas of Switzerland, all that matters to is to make sure that these planeshave all requirements met before they take off.

Planes will need to be refuelled, catering will needto be stocked up and cargo will need to be loaded.Of course youll also need to operate the jet bridgeto allow customers onto the jet and begin their ho-lidays!

However there are also other jobs that will need tobe completed in order to maintain a successful air-port and the safety of your aircraft and its passen-gers. This includes using the de-icer to remove icefrom the wings of aircraft and using the pushbacktractor to place the aircraft in a position to begin ta-ke-off procedures.

Youll be responsible for maintaining the airport sothat it provides efficient and safe preparations. Oncethese planes are in the sky, itll be difficult for themto refuel! Can you handle the pressure of several shiftwork as planes take off and land at your airport?

VRInsight MCP Combo BoeingControl panel for Flight Simulator

The MCP (Mode Control Unit) is one of the key com-ponents on a modern aircraft and used on each andevery flight. So when I was asked to test VRInsightsMCP Combo panel I was very excited. After all, the

way flight sim pilots are expected to interact withthe virtual aircraft has often bothered me. Could thisunit spell the end of clumsy mouse wheel adjust-ments and hunting for click spots?

    The concept

The idea behind this product is actually quite clever. The unit is not just an MCP but consists of and EFIS,MCP and COMM/Nav part. Commands like gear up/down and flaps up/down are also mapped to the de-vice. I guess the idea is to only have to use this oneunit.

Combined with a yoke, thrust levers and pedals thiswould mean that during a flight, the keyboard andmouse would just sit idle. So really it is all there tomake the customers life as easy as possible. But doesit?

In-flightOnce you are on the flight deck with everything set-up it all works quite well. I gave myself some radarvectors for an approach. Change of altitude andspeed are very easy to set. The unit reacts a bit diffe-rently to the real world MCPs so it took me a whileto get used to it, but once you get the hang of it, it

    all works fine.

Also changing frequencies and switching betweedifferent navaids is very easy and comfortable. Nmore using the hat button to look down and hunfor that tiny switch somewhere on the centre conso

le. So, it really does make ones life a lot easier, rightI am afraid not.

    User friendliness

As I said before, once set up it all works fine. But toget there you will need a lot of time and patienceAnd every time you decide to swap aircraft you wineed some more of the same.

The unit comes with a DVD which includes a myriaof installers and manuals. Once you have found whayou need it is time to work your way through severapieces of software to set up the MCP. None of themare user friendly and the included manuals are lesthan helpful.

It took me no less than two hours (and the friendlhelp of some people online) before I could connecthe unit to the default FSX 737. The set-up softwarrefused to find any other aircraft. Once it did but after linking the unit to the PMDG 737NGX the unit itself could not be found anymore. So the default 73is all I got.

The manual claimed that there should be a devicspecific module I have to install. I looked for it on

line and on the DVD without success.

On the left side you willfind an EFIS panel. The MCPcombo comes ready for seve-ral add-on aircraft includingthe PMDG 737NGX.

    The mid section replicates a

real world MCP and allowsthe player to set things likealtitudes, speeds or headingsand of course choose themode the FMS should fly in.

On the right side there is acombined COMM/NAV pa-nel. This makes choosingfrequencies a lot quicker andeasier than with the mouse.

    SIMULATOR WORLD 9/2013 1

Because I have deadlines to meet I was left with a li-mited test using only the MCP/and NAV/COMMs partof the panel. And I think this is a shame because I

could see great potential in this product.

The idea to never have to use the mouse or the key-board again and to make all selections from a stylishlooking piece of hardware really excites me. But if ittakes almost as long to set up as it would to conducta flight it is not really achieving what it set out to do.

There are other things too. Changing the contrastand illumination of the MCP panel is something thattakes about 1 2 seconds in the real world by turninga knob. For this unit you actually have to get a microscrewdriver (really?), put it into a small whole andturn a small screw inside into the right direction.

    Conclusion

This could be the best piece of hardware on the mar-ket and really worth its price. It could transform theway we interact with our flight sims and save us timeand nerves.

I love the concept of having all this functionality com-bined into one neat panel and it looks really goodtoo. But for me the hardware does not achieve whatit has set out to do due to very clumsy set up toolsand some not very user friendly design features.

The people I came across online that managed to seit all up were really happy with this product and am sure so would I have been. But a product that i

as complicated and convoluted to setup as this onis just not my cup of tea. Id rather spend my timflying.

    River Ship Simulator 201

River Ship Simulator 2012Inland Waterway Transport

In this article I will be looking at a ship simulator. There are a few different ones available but this par-ticular one only deals with shipping on one specific

river, which is the river Rhine. So lets put our cap-tains hat on and take command of one of the sevenincluded ships. The player map starts in Frankfurtand ends at the border to the Netherlands. This me-ans that steering a ship from one end of the map tothe other will take several hours. But lets not gethasty. Before you get to go anywhere there is stuffto do.

    Getting your feet wet

I dont know anything about ships and so I decidedto play through the tutorial first. A good idea as itturned out because there are quite a few things tolearn. You start off with your own cargo ship and theaim is to collect points in order to unlock other ships. Before you start you need to open your logbook andhave a look at all the assignments that are available.

Once you have chosen one and confirmed that youwill take over that shipment you must find the cor-rect loading station and load your ship. If you haulsand you will end up next to a large crane. Whilstthe crane can load your ship automatically you alsohave the option to have a go at the controls and tryto load the ship yourself. It sounds easy, but it isnt.Once the ship is loaded you have to raise the anchor

and set off. As mentioned above the map is huge and

with speeds of no more than 15 kph you will have tget used to some very long journeys. If that soundrather tedious dont worry. The developers have included several tools to accelerate your journey. Yo

can either speed up the simulation up to 10 times thnormal speed, or you can open the map, choose port closer to your final destination and simply movthe ship there. Of course these actions wont result ias many experience points and your overall progreswill be slower.

So slowly cruising along the river is really the besway to get points. It may sound boring. But actualy it isnt really that bad. The landscape surroundinthe river looks very nice and there is plenty of traffito keep you busy. The river also has shipping lanewhich you should stick to in order to stay safe.

    Controlling a ship

It all sounds very nice and easy going. And it has tbe said that the general feel of the game is somewhat relaxed. This changes however when the playehas to manoeuvre the ship into tight harbours andock it right next to a crane. The inertia of objects ia free flowing medium is huge and given the largweight of these ships they take a very long time treact to any kind of input. You really need to thinahead and plan how to get into some of the tightespots. Also when reversing some controls are reversed so it can get a bit confusing. But with a little b

of practice and some patience it starts to become ea

Speeding along! Whilst thfocus of the game lies in thheavy transport ships theis also time for some fuactivities such as zoominabout in a small speed boa

sier over time. A perfectly aligned ship right next tothe docking point at zero speed feels like quite anaccomplishment. After you have docked at your des-

tination you will have to take care of the unloadingagain. Once completed you are ready for your nexttask. As you progress you will get several differenttypes of ships and so your tasks will change too. Youmay have to ferry cars or passengers or even liquidcargo later on.

As you drive along the river you can change the en-vironment by selecting different weather and timeof day. Generally it has to be said that the graphicsare very nice indeed. The water looks very realisticand so do the wave effects caused by the ships. If youare more interested in technicalities than landscapesyou can of course enter the bridge of the ship andsteer it from there. There are lots and lots of fun-ctioning controls and it may seem daunting at thebeginning. To help newcomers like me the game de-velopers have added a small ? symbol. If selected, every control item on the bridge that can be used ismarked with a small question mark and by clickingon it players can read up on what it does.

    Additional content

It is pretty much standard now that simulator gamessuch as this one come with a modding tool that al-lows eager customers to create their own ships and

share them with the community. After a short search

online I found some new ships and even some supefast speedboats. Installation is very easy and beforI knew it I had a whole long list of ships to choos

from. This opens a whole lot of options to the playeFrom chasing other traffic on the river with a fasspeed boat to taking control of real monster sizeships.

    Conclusion

If you are used to flying fast planes or driving higspeed trains within the genre of simulators thethis will be a bit of a shock for you. But not in a baway. The gentle swaying of the boats and ships, thbirds flying around and the beautiful scenery slowlmoving by, all create a very nice and relaxing atmosphere. You can hear the water splashing against thships hull and see towns, castles and harbours slowlgoing by. The docking or turning around of largeheavy ships is a real challenge and should keep moscustomers busy at the end of every long journey. Sif you want some relaxing time after a long day awork this is actually pretty perfect. A nice and prettpart of Germany seen from a ship.

Aerosoft Airbus X ExtendedAircraft add-on for Flight Simulator

Some time ago I was asked by a friend of mine if Iwould want to join him on a training session on theA320. I gladly accepted and so we drove to a trai-ning centre of one of Europes largest airlines. After

sitting in the jump seat and watching the session un-fold the instructor told me that there was an emp-ty slot before the next crew would be coming in.And so I was given a quick crash course on the A320flight-deck to get rid of some Boeing habits and thechance to spend some time hand flying the bus.

One could argue that that doesnt make me the mostexperienced Airbus pilot (and they would be correct),but at least I was able to get a feel for the plane andexperience first-hand what it is like to fly an A320. Iwill try to re-visit a lot of those experiences now asI am testing Aerosofts Airbus X Extended package.

    The package

This package contains the Airbus A320 and A321 se-ries aircraft. There are several different versions in-cluded, most notably the A320 with CFM engines andsharklets. The list of liveries is extensive and covers 21different aircraft with many more available for freeon-line.

Also included is an aircraft configurator, a fuel plan-ner and route editor. In many ways I have to say thisis probably the most complete and extensive aircraftpackage I have come across so far.

But quantity often means less quality, so how doethis product stack up?

    Flying the bus

Flying a modern fly-by-wire aircraft often means managing systems. This applies especially to the moderairbus fleet. And so, in order to get the most out othis product I had to study many pages of documentstudy the checklists and read up on some airbus specific information.

That alone should already tell you that this is a highlcomplex add-on. All the systems have been carefullre-created and everything works just like it shouldOne thing I was very keen on testing was the flighenvelope protection which was something of a novelty when the A320 was launched.

After trying to stall the aircraft, over speeding anoverbanking I quickly realised that the autopilois indeed always watching and will stop you fromdoing something stupid. My worries of how this system would react in FSX where all unfounded. Evewhen close to a stall the aircraft applies correctionauthoritatively but smoothly and never overreacts.

The auto trim is also very nicely modelled and wheyou put the aircraft in a climb and at a specific banangle and let go of the controls it will hold it for youJust like the real plane does.

An actual passenger flight from A to B of course hasno such thrills. It is all about checklists and followingprocedures. If all that sounds a bit daunting I have

good news for you. Aerosoft decided to include twovirtual pilots.

You can decide how much work load they take awayfrom you and if you wish they will even work theirway through all the checklists pushing all the rightbuttons whilst you just watch and relax.

This feature can be toggled on and off on the right-hand MCDU. Unlike on real aircraft the right MCDU isthere to change settings on the aircraft. It may seemunrealistic but it is actually a very clever idea. Insteadof opening a menu and looking for the settings youwant to change you can do it all from the comfort ofthe flight deck.

Flying-wise it really feels like I remember the A320to be. I had lots of oh yes, I remember that mo-ments. Particularly during the landing which is quitedifferent from a 737.

The aircraft is very stable and very nice and easy tohand fly. Switching off the autopilot at 15,000ft andflying an aircraft all the way down to the runway byhand has never been so much fun.

    Looking good

Looks are of course a matter of personal taste, but

I have always thought that Airbus builds very be-autiful aeroplanes. That was, until the A380 camealong, but that is a different story.

The outside model of this aircraft is simply stunningA great deal of effort went into all the animationand the textures included are simply great. Generaly the whole appearance of the aircraft inside anout is just beautiful. The textures on the virtual flighdeck are crisp and easy to read.

The product also comes with a range of pre-programmed views that can be selected by an optional menat the top of the screen. Clearly a lot of thought wennot only into all the systems and appearance but alsinto user friendliness.

    Sounding too good?

I guess by now we have established that I really likthis add-on, but there is one problem. And thaproblem is the sound. I installed something callethe sound enhancement patch which I presumewould really take me back onto the A320 flight deckBut this was not the case.

Included in the package arethe A320 and A321 serieswith different engine vari-ants. Also included are mo-dels with the new sharklets.

The panel is crisp and clear

and looks great at night. Air-bus really has designed somevery user friendly flightdecksand Aerosoft has replicatedthis to a very high standard.

Pretty much all switches andbuttons on the flightdeckwork and do what you wouldexpect them to do. With thenight lighting switched onthis Airbus is a joy to fly in

Before becoming a pilot I worked as cabin crew formany years. During this time I was trained on the A320series as well as the A330/40 series. As such I have ex-

perienced hundreds and hundreds of take-offs fromthe forward jump seat. The A320 is quiet, but notthat quiet. The roaring sound during take-off is verypronounced in the forward part of the cabin and Iremember when the company I flew for introducedthe type, there were actually complaints from busi-ness class passengers about the noise level during ta-ke-off.

Personally it never bothered me but, yes there is arather mighty rumble going on in the front untilthe aircraft reaches about 250 kts. This is completelyabsent in this add-on and the aircraft just whispersdown the runway. In my opinion it is a real shamebecause it somewhat spoils the atmosphere a littlebit. But then we are talking about something thatonly affects the first two to three minutes of thewhole flight, so I guess one could gloss over it.

    Conclusion

Lets face it. Airbus fans have not had a great deal ofchoice when it came to FSX add-ons. Certainly peoplethat enjoy highly realistic products such as the PMDGrange had to wait a long time for something Airbusbased to come along. It seems that Aerosoft has hitthe nail on the head with this one and if you would

like to find out what flying an A320 is all about, then

this is the only add-on I would recommend right nowYes, it could do with a better sound set, but aparfrom that it is simply great.

My hope is that Aerosoft will bring us the rest of thAirbus family with the same systems depth and attention to detail. There is still a rather big gap in thFSX hangars around the world when it comes to thAirbus family and I couldnt think of a better producto fill it than the Airbus X Extended range.

Along the Three Country Corner RouteWith Taurus and co.

In this article about the JustTrains Three CountryCorner Route we will look at how a typical scenariois put together along this route and what playerscan expect when they enter a cab to start their jour-

ney.The route comes with 10 scenarios, 5 free roamscenarios plus a quick drive option.

Because these scenarios have to work for all poten-tial customers they all use default rolling stock. Somost of the time players will be driving the BR101with German carriages.

    Alternative Scenarios

Since the default rolling stock does not replicate thereal world the team that developed this route deci-ded to create an alternative.

The same 10 scenarios that are included in the routewere cloned and given a new name so that they willnot interfere with the original scenarios. Then theywere equipped with more realistic rolling stock.

In order for these scenarios to work the customer hasto have the required rolling stock installed. The fileincludes a .pdf file which lists all the required rollingstock with links to the download sites.

Two of the locos are payware, but the rest is all free-ware. The scenario-pack itself is free.

This scenario package is availabe at www.railsim.dand was released on the same day as the route.

    A look at the scenarios

All scenarios are numbered. Customers should plaat least the first three in the correct order. The firstwo scenarios are introductions to the route. In thfirst one the player drives a REX (Regional Expresstrain from Lindau to Bludenz.

There is an experienced driver in the cab who wipoint out many interesting things about the routand give some helpful tips. In the second scenario thsame experienced driver will accompany the playeup the steep and windy mountain pass. Like the firsscenario, it is all made very easy and there is lots tlearn and to see.

From scenario four onwards things get a bit morcomplex. In scenarios nine and ten the player will brequired to have good knowledge about the four sgnalling systems and be able to stick to tight timtables.

If customers decide to download the above mentoned alternative scenario pack they will be confronted with an extra task. Whenever the Taurus loccrosses the border between Austria and Switzerlanthe driver has to change from one electrical systemto another which means switching off the mains an

    changing the pantographs.

    SIMULATOR WORLD 9/2013 2

The alternative scenarios also make use of the BR218.In scenario number 7 the player is asked to pick up

some wagons from a quarry and take them to Wol-furt.

Sounds easy enough but all other traffic has right ofway and so watching the signals becomes vital.

Along the Austrian and German part of the routethere is a PZB system included which was speciallydeveloped for this route.

Default stock as well as most payware locos will reactto this system. If the player chooses to ignore speedlimits or signals it will trigger an emergency brake.

    Highlights

Once the player has gotten used to all the technicaldetails and all the signals it is a good idea to sticktheir head out of the window to take in a bit of thelandscape.

Between the German border and the station of Bre-genz the route follows the shores of Lake Constance. In Bregenz there is also a pretty harbour right nextto the tracks.

The station of Lindau is actually on an island and to

get there trains have to navigate a specially built rail-

way dam. The trains roll slowly past the boats, people go for walks and there is lots of nice greeneracross the water.

Whilst driving along the pass it is always worth looking outside for a bit. The most beautiful stretch probably from Hintergasse to Wald am Arlberg. Herthe route runs high above the valleys below anacross many bridges and viaducts and through somshort tunnels.

In scenario number 4 the player has to drive a speciatrain for the Lake Constance shipping Company jublee. In the alternative scenario pack the BR218 in TEcolours is used.

Along the ride there are lots of train spotters alonthe tracks and many more people in the harbours en

    joying the beautiful day.

Unfortunately there are no real shunting activities included in the route. This is despite the fact that there are many larger railway stations included in throute where shunting is part of the daily business. ISwitzerland there is St. Margrethen and Rorschachin Germany there is Lindau and Reutin and in Austrithere is Feldkirch, Bludenz and Wolfurt.

In Feldkirch there is also a car loading station. It iquite common in Austria for people to board an in

tercity train and to take their car with them.

A special train pulled by theBR218 is used in the scena-rio From port to port.

The Taurus loco is the true

workhorse along this routeand can be seen very fre-quently.

There is also lots to do awayfrom the main route. Here aBR218 picks up some wa-gons from the quarry nearHohenems.

By far the longest scenario is called Down we go.It is 70 minutes long and requires the player to drive

a very long and heavy freight train from St. Antondown the pass to Wolfurt. There is lots of snow andit is very cold. The loco has a tendency to slip and hasto be handled with care.

The included scenarios are good but dont seem tomake full use of the potential the route offers. Therehasnt been any word yet on whether JustTrains willrelease any scenario packs.

In the meantime it is down to the community to pro-vide the players with many more hours of fun in theform of new and imaginative scenarios.

Plant Fire Brigade Simulator 2014Everyday life of an industrial fire brigade

    Fire Brigade Simulator 201

There is a rising number of simulators available thatrevolve around the world of the emergency services.I guess it makes sense. After all you can have a nicecombination of the typical simulator features com-

bined with some action packed events that furtheryour career.

This time I will be looking at the Plant Fire BrigadeSimulator. A rather specific simulator, but dont letthat fool you. It comes with quite a lot to do.

    The Storyline

As with all sims, you start off somewhere at the bot-tom. In this case as an apprentice at a fire stationlocated on a large industrial estate. The day startswith a briefing where you will be assigned a vehicle. It is your responsibility to keep all the equipment inorder and all water and fuel tanks full. You must alsoclean the car from time to time otherwise your bossgets a bit antsy.

Since you are on a large industrial estate it meansthat the variety of things you have to deal with isvery large. From oil spills to car accidents and fromfaulty fire alarms to actual fires in warehouses.

It is all in a days work for you. In between you mustlook after yourself and your equipment. You willhave to make time to eat, drink and work out. Allthis will have an impact on your performance.

    Gameplay

This is the first simulator game I have come acrosthat is set up like a first person shooter game. Ever

ything you see is from your characters perspective.

So, regardless of whether you are on the toilet, lifting weights or driving a vehicle, you only ever geto see your hands.

Whenever you walk towards an object or an arewhere you can manipulate something, a small icowith a symbol will appear. Clicking on it will activatthe action.

Whilst driving vehicles you will see a small dashboard at the bottom which will allow you to do athe things you would expect to be able to do in a caOn the left there is a small map which helps you finyour way around the estate.

It is a pretty large area so the map is crucial to get tincidents in a timely manner.

This first person approach to the game also allowyou to roam around freely wherever and whenever you please. You can leave your vehicle and juswander about. You can also explore the three storiehigh fire brigade building which is full of rooms anthings to discover.

    SIMULATOR WORLD 9/2013 2

    Into the action

So how does all this come together?

After the briefing at the beginning of my shift I wouldnormally drive my vehicle to the workshop and cleanit.

I was forever being told off about the state of mycars. I checked that everything was in order beforereturning the car to the garage and grabbing a drinkand something to eat.

The incidents are random so you never know what isgoing to happen and when. Sometimes I had to dashout of the kitchen, run down the stairs and jump intothe car to set off. Oh, dont forget to open the gara-ge doors before you jump into the car. That can getembarrassing.

When the alarm sounds you get a brief description ofwhat has happened. Depending on that descriptionyou will either drive on your own or with other ve-hicles to the scene. Once you have arrived, you needto assess the situation and decide what to do aboutit.

In many cases it is also your responsibility to decidewhen an area can be declared clear again. This has tobe done with caution. On a few occasions I thought Ihad extinguished all fires in a building and declared

it safe only to find that I had missed something.

As a result I had a substantial number of collectepoints deducted and in one instance was even demoted.

So taking your time and being thorough is vital. Thonly time when you shouldnt hang around is wheyou are driving to the scene.

There is a time limit of how long you can take to gethere. Whenever an alarm sounds a stopwatch wistart at the top of your screen counting down thseconds you have to get to incident site.

    Positives and negatives

The first person viewpoint is great and really makethis game much more immersive than others I havseen. It is also a game that never gets boring as theris always something to do.

You may just be half way through washing the cawhen the alarm sounds. When you come back yonotice that the water levels or fuel levels are low soyou need to take care of that before washing the resof the caroh and the stomach is rumbling as well.

The one thing I found a bit annoying was the way thvehicles behave. I do not expect a highly realistic vehicle simulator but first of all you can only drive themusing the keyboard and secondly they are incredibl

difficult to manoeuvre, especially in tight places.

This is where you will findyour vehicles. Make sure youlook after them and keep alltanks filled up.

After a visit in a dark

warehouse we can reportthat there was a false alarm.

Getting ready for the nextadventure. You can alsouse your spare time to trainyourself on different types ofequipment.

  • 5/25/2018 Simulator World 09 2013 Aerosoft Edition Eng

    29/30

    SIMULATOR WORLD 9/2013 2

There are also some other vehicles driving around.I dont know whether there is a bug that needs to beironed out, but they seem to crash into each other a

    lot.

They also drive in the middle of the road making itdifficult to overtake. None of them react to sirensand the blue lights.

Also a pop up map would be great. The small mapin the corner can be zoomed out of but often it willnot zoom enough to show you the site you need toget to.

The graphics on the map are also a bit ambiguousand you never know whether you are approaching abuilding or a wide open space as they are depictedin the same colour. This can be a problem, especiallyat night.

    Conclusion

There are a few rough edges here and there butapart from that this is a very enjoyable game. It isvery immersive and has a lot of depth to it.

The area the player has to look after is very largeand hosts everything from train stations to chemicalplants. The emergencies I came across were very va-ried and increased in difficulty as I progressed.

The graphics look good too with some nice effectsuch as oil spills and explosions whilst fighting fires. If the developers could make driving and navigatin

a bit easier (and maybe teach those other driversome manners) then this could be a winner.
