Note: The Opake Solar Microscope Compendium, by Dudley Adams, London, is fully described in George Adams II's Essays

on the Microscope of 1787. It is therein acknowledged that, despite the name, this refinement of the solar microscope was in

fact introduced in 1774 by his rival Benjamin Martin, who stated that: "with this instrument all opake objects, whether of the

animal, vegetable or mineral kingdom, may be exhibited to great perfection, in all their natural beauty; the light and shades,

the prominences and cavities, and all the varieties of different hues, tints and colours heightened by the reflection of the solar

rays condensed upon them". In effect, this was the sort of leisure time entertainment that would be replaced by the magic

lantern and later the cinema, as the opake box is in effect a small camera obscura which, by means of affixing it to the body

cone of the solar microscope, could project into an otherwise darkened room, an image of whatever specimen one chose to

place in the sprung retainer - a technical revolution in the history of projection

Simple Microscope (C. 1789 )

Price fijo: 2.120 € (no vendido) Seller: www.microscopestore.com Nelicus ref.: 900000005529

Descripción: This is an extremely rare precision made simple microscope. It is very similar to one listed in the Billings Microscope Collection, Second Edition on page #158, Fig. 298, W. & S. Jones, London, England: dated 1789. The hinged folding handle is made out of ivory and is 1 inch long. On top of the handle is the folding brass lens holder approx. ¼ inch in diameter that houses the optic. Both the handle and lens holder fold onto the 2 inch double hinged brass stem. A brass nut adjusts the spiked speciman holder by moving it to and from the object. There are two hand etchings on both sides of the joint that folds the handle and lens holder, on one side it appears to have the initials "B/G", on the other side it looks the numbers "4/6" which appears to be hand inscribed. The only minor flaw on the on the microscope is a very slight hairline crack on the top portion of the ivory handle; otherwise it is in mint condition. This precision piece of workmanship represents the quality of the instrument in its time. This is a very rare microscope in its condition.

Simple folding pocket botanical microscope (c 1800's)

Price subasta: 387 € (12 bids) Seller: artyessnow Ebay number: 150310948310 Date: 26-nov-08 Nelicus ref.: 900000005531

Descripción: This is a simple folding pocket botanical microscope of a type which was first introduced in the late 1700's and

continued in production for a hundred years. It has a pair of lenses mounted in a brass ring which is fixed on a hinged arm,

with another hinged arm forming a handle. The handle is made of turned faux ivory (get my meaning?). A bar with a central

slot projects from the hinge, and the specimen holder runs in the slot. The holder has a central hole into which the stage

forceps are inserted, in this case missing replaced by a needle. The holder is clamped by tightening the knurled knob against

the tension of a brass spring. It measures 4 x 3 inches (100 x 75mm) and weighs 40 grams.

Rare Victorian folding pocket botanical microscope (c 1800's)

Price subasta: 134 € (10 bids) Seller: artyessnow Ebay number: 380089070285 Date: 20-dic-08 Nelicus ref.: 900000005532

Descripción: Unusual small folding brass pocket botanical microscope measuring approx 50mm x 15mm x 15mm

and weighing approx 26g. It has a magnifying lense mounted in a brass ring with hinge and below a hinged handle

which we think is ivory. There is a bar with a centre slot in which the point that you put your specimen on is

controlled by a brass screw below which allows it to slide up and down to focus. We think this dates from the

Victorian era although maybe earlier. There is no makers marks but it is very well made
