Compound
A can opener is made up of 4 simple machines. The arms of a can opener is a lever. They open and close on one fulcrum to grip and help open a can. The part that slices open a can is a wedge. As the can opener moves around the can, the wedge cuts through the metal top. The part that grips and helps rotate the can around is a gear. The gear uses energy from the turning handle to spin around. The rotating handle on a can opener is a wheel and axle. When you turn the handle, energy transfer to the gear and wedge, which rotate and open a can.

A stapler is made up of 2 simple machines. The top arm of the stapler is a lever. When you push down on it, it transfers energy into a staple. A staple as it pierces paper is a wedge. When you push down on the stapler, it sends out a sharp metal staple which pierces through paper.
