The mixing is certainly the mostcritical phase of the concrete pro-duction process and the quality ofthe concrete depends heavily onthe quality of the mixer.With this basic fact in mind,SIMEM has developed a range ofplanetary pan mixers called SUNthat guarantees the most homoge-neous mix in the minimum mixingtime. Due to the efficiency of the com-pulsory mixing action, the SUNrange meets the requirements ofvarious production processes:plants for truck mixers, precastingfactories, mobile plants, construc-tion site plants and special mixingprocesses (powders, waste treat-ment, chemical components etc.)

THE PLANETARY MIXERS The mixing flow is highly efficientbecause of the integrated action ofthe central stars (one or moredepending on models) in planetaryrotation, combined with differentperipheral scraping shovels. The whole motion is driven throu-gh the transmission system whichis designed with a powerful elec-tric motor flanged on top of themixing tank with an epicycloidalgearbox at 2 or 3 stages; the maingearbox is then directly driving thelower group of gears, submergedinto a grease tank to minimise themechanical friction.

The SUN range is representing the ultimate technology forplanetary pan type mixers. The most advanced transmissionsystem is combined with the most efficient mixing flow. Thenewest skip hoist model with foldable gate is integrated tothe mixing tank as an option for aggregates loading.

The internal frame of the mixing tankis completely covered with interchan-geable panels made of special anti-wear materials, while the mixingpaddles are manufactured with a steelframe coated with a special anti-wearrubber. All the paddles are shaped,depending on the specific position, tooptimise the flow of materials and tominimise the wear aggression ofaggregates on paddles surfaces.Hydro-dynamic profiles are thus provi-ded for both the scraping paddles andthe central mixing paddles as well asfor the supporting shafts.

The planetary motion of one or two mixing stars (dependingon model) is combined with the flow created through theperipheral scraping shovels. This compulsory mixing actionguarantees a perfect homogeneity within 30 to 40 seconds(depending on mix design and slump rate).

Based on the experience of SIMEM30 years activity in the field of con-crete mixing process, the design ofSUN mixers is nowadays represen-ting the state of the art technologyfor planetary pan type mixers.Advantages and plus issues areeasily recognised when presentingthe new SUN range:

- Planetary gearbox, vertically cou-pled to the electric driving motor.The adoption of first class standardelectric motors and epicycloidalgearboxes gives the guarantee ofan industrial application, withparts and maintenance servicesavailable immediately all over theworld.- The transmission and driving

system is fully concentrated verti-cally in the center of the mixingtank, thus the whole peripheral areais available for aggregates/cementinlets and for inspection and clea-ning operations.- All around the mixing tank highlyresistant steel inspection gates areprovided for facilitated access tothe mixing tank. Inspection win-dows and safety limit switches areinstalled according to the moststrict safety regulations.- Water distribution pipe is integra-ted around the mixing tank withinjection nozzles distributedhomogeneously on the peripheralcircle. This configuration grants theperfect distribution of water andeventually liquid admixtures allover the mixing area.- The discharge gates are designed

The design of SUN mixers, with transmissionconcentrated in the central axle, offer a wide area tothe operator for inspection, maintenance and cleaning ope-rations. Easily opening doors are provided all around themixing tank with special limit switches according to the stric-test safety regulations.Electric and hydraulic wiring is provi-ded into specific channels integrated in the mixing tank.

with a radial flat motion in order toadjust the opening width and pro-portionally batch the concreteoutlet; inductive limit switchesadjustable in a rail are provided tocontrol the outflow rate. The SUNmixers offer the possibility toinstall up to 4 gates.

- Discharging doors are operatedthrough hydraulic cylinders andhydro-unit in order to provide apowerful and precise rotation evenwhen mixing heavy materials. Theunit is integrated with the mixerframe, complete with aluminiumtank, electric motor, emergencyhand pump.- Electric junction box for the con-nection to the main control boardis pre-wired and bolted to themixing tank: installation and con-nection operations when integra-ting SUN mixers into mixing plantsare thus easy and fast.

The discharge gates with radial motion are driven throughhydraulic piston. Inductive limit switches are supplied foradjusting the opening radius and thus the outlet flow.

SUN 2500 mixer during loading operations at SIMEM fac-tories; lifting hooks are designed into the chassis of themixer. The bottom of the mixing tank is heavily reinforcedwith supporting profiles and basement plates. Up to 4 gatesare available to distribute concrete to different destinations.

Hydraulic unit is supplied to drive the discharge gates. It isequipped with aluminium tank for oil with level and tem-perature indicator and emergency manual pump in case ofblack-out.

The transmission system of SUN mixers is designed with a powerful electric motor on top, vertically flanged to an epicycloidal gearbox at 3 stages with a mechanical efficiency of 88%. The lower levelof transmission is designed with a crown gearbox completely filled with grease with submerged hardened gears. The supports of the mixing shafts are all connected to the gears through twin roller bea-rings. The mixing efficiency is far better than any ring-type mixer since the material is immediately homogenised within the whole tank volume.

TECHNICAL FEATURES The newest SIMEM design foraggregates skip hoist is availablefor SUN mixers. The foldable bot-tom gate of the skip is automatical-ly opening at the top of the rails todischarge in few seconds the mate-rials inside the mixer without anydust. The low profile design of theskip offers significant advantageswhen the plant configurationrequires the skip to be loaded atunderground level, in order tominimise the depth of the diggingoperations.Transport is obviously convenientsince everything could fit into stan-dard trucks and containers.

Low profile skip with foldable bottom gate is the newestdesign for SUN mixer application.

The lifting system for the skip is designed with twin cablesand tension controlling limit-switch in order to grant theabsolute safety to operators.

The bottom gate of the skip is automatically opened at thetop of the rails. A special flag-panel is installed on the mixerinlet to suppress aggregates dust.

Complete mixing platform configured with SUN 1500, aggregates loading skip, two discharge gates equipped with chute conveyorand concrete holding hopper. Supporting column, chute, holding hopper, skip hopper, ladder and service floor are supplied withgalvanisation treatment.

Each SUN model has a mixing system that has been desi-gned according to its volume and loading capacity. That is why mixing and discharging performances are thesame for each SUN model.
