Dear Members -

Broken Arrow Seniors, Inc. (BASI) has been made aware that its former President and CEO and its

former bookkeeper have been charged with felony embezzlement by the Tulsa County District

Attorney.

Earlier this year, following the resignation of the former President, the board of directors was

made aware of irregularities in BASI financials. Immediately thereafter, the board of directors

engaged a third party accounting firm to conduct a full and thorough investigation and review of

BASI financials. The findings of that investigation were referred to the Broken Arrow Police

Department.

As a result of the events, the BASI board of directors retained the services of the Oklahoma

Center for Nonprofits Shared Financial Services to create a solid financial management plan that

segregated accounting duties and provided needed internal controls. This results in peace of mind

in our financial reporting as well as restored confidence with our members, funding partners, staff

and board.

We can assure our members, funding partners and the community that we have the necessary

financial controls in place to make sure that this doesn’t happen again.

Going forward, we are focused on the future and supporting our core mission – serving senior

adults by providing programs that foster independence, wellness, community involvement and

personal growth.

– BASI Board of Directors

Member Orientation - Not Just for New Members

You may think that the Member Orientation

meeting set for 2 pm the second Tuesday of each

month is just for new members. New members are

encouraged to attend to learn more about the

activities and programming offered at the Center.

Long time members are also encouraged to attend.

As a seasoned member, you may think you

know all that the Center offers just by being familiar

with the Center’s calendar. You may also come and

enjoy one or two activities but hesitate to join in

other activities. Coming to the Member Orientation

will help even long standing members become more

aware of the scope of the Center’s programming.

This is your opportunity to ask questions about the

purpose of the Alzheimer’s Support Group, Guitar

lessons, the difference between the five line dancing

classes at the Center and more. You may discover

other interests or find an activity or program that

could inspire, motivate and help a friend or family

member. You may also discover the opportunity to

mentor a new member that shares an interest with

you.

The January Member Orientation will be held

January 8 at 2 pm in Activity Room 3.

The Center’s bus plays an important role for a number of Center members. The bus provides safe and reliable transportation to and from the Center and in doing so, offers members the opportunity to socialize with others, enjoy Center activities and share a meal with their friends. Substitute bus drivers are needed to step in on occasion to ensure this Center benefit continues uninterrupted. If you are interested in substituting when needed, please inquire in the office.

Memorial Plaque - A Lasting Reminder

The BA Senior Center Memorial plaques, located in our lounge, list the names of those that have passed that others want to have remembered. It is a lasting memorial that remains for others to read and recall how so many have meant so much. You can honor the memory of a friend or loved one by adding their name plate with a minimum $50 donation. Please stop in the office for more information.

Hello - My name is Donna. I am here to share just how I got started with the BA Senior Center and why I stay. Year’s ago I was a very active person. I loved hosting parties and going places and doing things with friends. Over the years I gained a lot of weight and that took a toll on my

knees. I was unable to have knee replacement surgery. As a result of the pain and weight gain, I quit going places. Sadly, I started isolating myself at home. I started using a walker to help me get around. I didn’t want anyone to see me - to see what bad shape I had become. I was embarrassed and ashamed of myself. I felt helpless and hopeless. I researched the BA Senior Center to see what they offered and found they had a variety of classes plus a fitness room all at an affordable price. I paid my membership dues in April but could not find the courage to walk in the door again. Finally on June 21 I went to my first Chair Zumba class. Everyone was so welcoming and I loved the music. Carol invited me to stay for Zumba Gold. I laughed telling her I couldn’t even stand so I certainly wouldn’t be able to do Zumba Gold. She encourage me to do what I could while sitting in a chair. “Just keep moving,” she said. “That’s what’s important.”

I stayed. I was the only one with a walker. The only one sitting in a chair. I couldn’t do everything they did but I was there, I decided, to get my life back! I returned week after week. I discovered that everyone was there for the same reason - to get healthier Today I am much healthier. I am able to walk 10 times farther. I can stand alone and pick up my grandbabies. I have lost more that 40 pounds since I joined. Zumba has given me my life back. I am only one story. There are many other stories at the Center that will inspire you. Members from 55 to their 80’s. People losing 80 pounds. A woman who no longer needs a leg brace. Several cancer survivors. A gentleman who has recovered from breaking his back. Others in need of walkers and canes. All these people are exercising at the Center. I encourage everyone who is at home watching TV to turn it off and come join us for Chair Zumba , Zumba Gold, Fitness for Ladies, Line Dancing, Limited Exercise, Tai Chi, Yoga and more at the Senior Center. The classes are not only good for your health but they are fun. I can’t change my past but I can change my future. If you are not already coming, please come join us at the Center and change your future too. I came and now I am happier and healthier. I’ll be saving you a chair next to me!

$37 billion a year is stolen from America’s elderly

according to Bloomberg. Scams targeting older adults

are increasing. One way to protect yourself is by being

aware and educating yourself regarding scam tactics.

The Department of Justice is providing education

programs for seniors. Experts in the field from the

United States Attorney’s Office,

Northern District of Oklahoma will

be at the Center on Wednesday,

January 23 for a presentation

regarding scams targeting older

adults. The presentation will take

place in Heritage Hall (dining room)

and will begin at 10:30 am.

Presenters will include:

• Joe Wilson, Assistant United States Attorney, Elder

Justice Coordinator & Criminal Division

• Marianne Harrdcastle, Assistant United States Attorney,

Civil Division

• Cathy Coco Hill

Victim Witness Specialist

Presenters will focus on email scams (also known as

phishing scams which is the fraudulent practice of

sending emails purporting to be from reputable

companies in order to induce individuals to reveal

personal information, such as passwords and credit card

numbers) in addition to lottery, investment and charity

scams.

Specific scams that are prevalent in Broken Arrow will

also be discussed in addition to learning about

reporting such crimes to the BA Police Department.

Plan now to attend this important presentation.

Guard Against Scams

This presentation was scheduled last

month but was cancelled due to federal

government offices being closed for

former President Bush’s funeral.

It’s that time of year again. New Year’s resolutions. We’ve all made them. Did you know that roughly half of

Americans admit to making some kind of resolution and 65 percent of those resolve to exercise more? Yet despite

their good intentions, only 8 percent of people are successful in sticking to an exercise routine. Enjoyment of an

activity is a key element of becoming—and staying—motivated to participate, and that is where Zumba Gold comes in.

Zumba Gold at the Senior Center will provide all that you need to help you be successful in keeping that exercise

resolution in tact.

Monday through Thursday beginning at 3:15 pm you can hear the music and

happy, enthusiastic voices at the Center. It’s all coming from Zumba! Everyone is

glad to be there because they know, without a doubt, that they will enjoy the hour

movin’ and groovin’ to the music. Ask anyone who’s there. “Zumba gets me moving

and I have so many new friends,” says one Zumba Gold enthusiast. “If it weren’t for

Zumba I would probably be hibernating in my house. Thank goodness for the Center

and this class!” adds another member.

Much of the energy in the Center’s Zumba Gold class emanates from the teacher

Linda Few. A licensed Zumba teacher for the past 11 1/2 years, Linda’s talent is

inspiring others to become more active. “As a breast cancer survivor I think I seek

quality of life,” says Linda, “and Zumba makes me feel young. That’s why I’m

passionate about helping others become more active.” Linda encourages everyone in her

class, including both men and women, to move and notes that perfection is not a requirement.

“If you need to slow down or even stop and sit down for a minute, that’s OK. It’s all about

reaching a fitness level. If you stick with it, you will gain strength and making staying fit easier

and fun,” she adds.

Paced to suit the needs of older participants and beginners, Zumba Gold fitness programs

combine music and dance moves with physical

exercise, providing multiple health benefits including

body toning, strengthening and stretching of the

hip, leg, and arm muscles, improved cardiovascular

health and balance and flexibility.

Get started on keeping that New Year’s resolution

to be more active. Zumba Gold classes are held

Monday through Thursday (with the exception of the

second Thursday) at 3:15 in Centennial.

The February trip to Hot Springs, Arkansas is not the first for the Travel Group. As a matter of fact, this year’s trip marks the fifth year the group will be going because the destination is a yearly favorite. Set for February 21, 22 and 23, the trip highlights include horse racing, fabulous meals and hotel accommodations . Whether you like to place a bet or not, a stop at Oaklawn Racing Park is a highlight of the trip. During past trips the Senior Center group enjoyed an ’insider” tour of the track including the stables and jockey rooms in addition to reserve box seats at the race track that has been in business since 1904. If you have interests beyond the race track, Hot Springs also offers a choice of shopping and historic tours. Another highlight of the trip has been the Bell of Arkansas dinner cruise. Meals have included a delicious roasted chicken, fresh salad and cherry cobbler dinner. The evening comes to a close with music and a beautiful sunset on the water. The group will stay at the luxurious 5-star hotel, The Arlington in Hot Springs. The Hotel has a rich history. It was built at a time before Las Vegas or Florida were tourist destinations and at the time was considered to be a major resort destination. As the story goes, The Arlington is the hotel that Al Capone often frequented. Don’t miss out. Reserve your spot by completing a reservation form found at the puzzle table or on the Travel Group’s bulletin board and by providing a $50 deposit. Checks should be made payable to Safari Travel. Look for more detailed information regarding this trip in the February newsletter and during the travel group’s meetings scheduled for Thursday, January 10 and Thursday, February 7 at the Center. The group meets at 1 pm in Activity Room 3.

The Center’s Centennial room has recently been

named the Jean and Ralph Jones Bridge Room following a

donation from their family. “We wanted to honor the

lives of our mother and father,” said Judy Hutter,

daughter of Jean and Ralph. “The Center meant the

world to my father especially. A gift to the Center honors

both their lives and I know that

he would be so pleased.”

For years Ralph Jones was a

fixture in the duplicate bridge

room. “My dad would talk

about how playing bridge at the

Center was the high point of his

life,” Judy adds. “He always said that bridge was the one

thing that kept his mind active and engaged. It kept him

young and he was so thankful for the opportunity to

play!” Even up to the age of 98, Ralph continued to

come to the Center.

Ralph’s longevity could be attributed to his

competiveness but also his

zest for life. His spirited story

telling of his memories as a

military police officer in

Africa and Europe during

World War II caught the

attention of others and were

spotlighted in a Tulsa World

interview in 2015. These

stories included a chance

meeting with the Pope, and

sipping on wine that was

likely set aside for General

Dwight Eisenhower and Army

Chief of staff George

Ralph encouraged his wife, Jean, to join the Center but

health problems eventually prevented her from coming.

Judy does recall her mother enjoying Party Bridge and

education sessions when she was able to come.

“Our family was so pleased to have the opportunity to

honor our parents. We see the plaque and know that

they would be happy to be remembered at the place

where they spent time enjoying life,” adds Judy. “We

hope that, given the opportunity, more families will be

inspired to honor the lives of parents and loved ones at

the Center.”
