There is a sense of mystery around the

beginning of the year, because we

don’t know what it holds. Now

sometimes the years don’t turn out as

God’s plan for the future when that

happens.

At the beginning of 2017, if you had

Generations Together In Guatemala

My grand adventure began back in the spring with the death of my dear friend, Anne Gundlach. It was at that moment that I made the decision…life can't wait. I signed up for the Guatemala mission trip through Oak Ridge United Methodist Church. I thought it would be a wonderful experience for my daughter as well. A recent graduate of Northwest High School, Megan is a freshman at Western Carolina University. Although she had been on numerous mission trips through the church. this was my first experience. The trip fell during her fall break so we joined the first team including the students from High Point University.

In discussing my upcoming adventure with my dad, he jumped on board as well. He offered to drive from Ohio to pick Megan up and meet us for the trip. Three generations headed to a foreign land to impact the lives of others. Serious family bonding! We arrived in Guatemala October 14th, two days before my Dad’s 81st birthday. I didn’t realize we were about to experience some of the hardest work I've ever done. How exciting to see cinder blocks and cement pieces transformed into an efficient stove that would reduce chronic respiratory issues and reduce deforestation in the mountains of Guatemala.

With the leadership of Max Kern and Dan Chance, the first team’s work was nearly flawless installing 200 stoves in homes. Adobe walls, dirt floors, shaky tin roofs and no bathrooms - these aren't our typical Northwest Guilford homes. The fear of having the ceiling collapse as you work to caulk the chimney was real. Most required a wood board to keep you from falling through. We installed stoves until lunch and our afternoons were filled with interaction with the children. Each family would receive medicine to remove parasites along with items for each family member. We would play games with the kids to keep them busy while waiting their turn: jumping rope, coloring, duck duck goose, soccer and crafts like God’s Eye’s. The pictures are priceless.

A special thanks to the many people from all over the Triad who donated items for the families. (Clothing, shoes, coloring books, toothbrushes and soap - all the simple things we take for granted) The children’s expressions when you gave them a Tootsie Roll or Dum Dum made you feel like they had won the lottery. That is the joy we experienced. For those that donated stoves, the people of Lemoa are extremely grateful. You helped an entire village! My heart was warmed as I read Megan’s Facebook post, “until next year Guatemala”.

Backpack Ministry Reflections For the volunteers! We have over 25 volunteers serving

our children each week. They are shopping, packing,

picking up backpacks, delivering backpacks, doing

inventory, conducting food drives and much more.

For the special donations! People have been so

generous in donating hats and gloves, school supplies and

goodies to our children – more ways to show God’s

Children they are loved. As a note, one of the backpack

children came to me and told me how much a single

pencil helped.

And especially for God’s Blessings on this ministry – God

continually blesses us with the means to keep this

ministry growing. I will never forget when I first started as

the sponsorship coordinator and it was obvious that we

were running low on funds and may have to put kids on a

wait list. I was told by Jessica, our Backpack Director at

that time, that God always provides. Within a short time

of her telling me that, we received financial donations

that added up to our exact needs.

Thank you again for all that you have done over the

years to help this ministry! Please pray for our

continued growth and support and especially for the

children that need our Love.

Blessings to you in the new year!

Beth Waterfield

NWGABP Ministry Sponsorship Coordinator and Board

Member

As 2018 begins, the Backpack Ministry volunteers would

like to reflect upon what we are thankful for:

All that you have done to sustain this ministry and help

us grow over the past 7 years. Yes this is our 7th year

feeding the children – we went from 2 to 100+. Last year

we served over 120 and this year we are hoping to exceed

that number. The ministry now has a board and even

added Northern Middle School this year. We are taking

extra steps to think out of the box to discover new ways

to reach out to more families and make them aware of

the program. There are over 900 children in our

Northwest Area that qualify, and we want to educate

more families on our program and continue to reduce

childhood hunger.

For all the food donations! The first quarter of this

school year we received over 1900 food items. As you can

imagine the donations significantly reduced our cost for

the first quarter. Although we did not achieve our

financial goal of 120 new sponsorships, currently we are

still able to grow to 120 due to the amount of food that

has been donated. The board is continuing to seek and

depend on more food drives.

For the $25,000 in new sponsorships we received this

year (covers approximately 65 children). Church

members and community members continue to be

generous with feeding our children. The new

sponsorships, plus our reserves and the food donations

allows us to serve up to 120 children. As we grow and

hopefully exceed that number we will work with the

church and community to raise more money as well as

look at different ways to raise funds and cut cost.

Prison Ministry Support Kairos #47

Twice a year, Christ reaches out to residents inside Central

Prison (CP) in Raleigh through our team of Kairos volunteers.

This is very humbling for the volunteers. This 72-hr ministry

is interfaith; the 42 residents with whom we’ll share Christ’s

through our loving and listening, will include Muslims,

Rastafarians, Wikkens, or men who have turned their backs

on God early in life. Further, a person cannot undertake this

ministry alone. Each of us enters CP with the prayers and

resource support of our outside teams. We see God work

miracles, as walls come down through our listening and

loving. Prayer is an irreplaceable act of agape (unconditional

love) from our outside teams. It bears fruit for God

throughout our long days with the men, and often during

restless nights! This is my 30th Kairos.

A challenging element of this ministry is that each team

member must bring 50 dozen perfect cookies. You can help

by baking cookies. The cookies need to be about 2.5”

diameter, round cookies. We have decided the cookies must

all be chocolate chip; no fruit, nuts, sprinkles or frosting of any

kind. Each dozen should be packed in a quart zip lock (or like)

bag. They will be collected in the education building Sunday,

January 29. When you bake for the residents, you are part of

our team. We are also encouraged to bring standard size

placemats; decorated by small children, with a Bible verse or

words of encouragement. The children at ORWS have

produced a sufficient number this year.

Our prayer chain may be the easiest, and also one of the most

important places you can help. Our prayer partners affirm

their intention to pray during the weekend (February 7-10,

2018), by writing their names on prayer sheets we will pass

around. We cut the signed strips then make loops for a

prayer chain that goes all the way around the gym at least

once. Please also pray for the outside team, who will be

cooking amazing meals for 200 men throughout each day.

Finally, each of us will also hand write a letter to each of the

42 residents with whom we will share the weekend, to show

them Christ’s Love.

There are two additional ways you can become involved

during a Kairos weekend:

1. Become involved serving with the outside team in Raleigh

during the 4-day weekend. It’s a great, inclusive group,

and we can usually use extra help for one day, or more.

2. Attend the closing ceremony for the Kairos 47 weekend

at Central Prison. Please let me know ASAP and I can

provide the details of signing up, and fitting into the setup

of the ceremony. During the closing ceremony, you will

hear what this experience meant to the participants.

If you can help with this Kairos weekend, or have questions,

please contact Dan Nelson at 336-643-9123.

Medicine Cabinet Checklist This content was originally printed in Piedmont Parent magazine.

6 Items Not to Keep in Your Medicine Cabinet:

1. Cough medicine with dextromethorphan - Not shown to work in kids (especially under age 6); has the potential for serious side

effects.

2. Decongestants - Not recommended by the FDA for children under 6.

3. Aspirin - Found to sometimes cause a serious disease called Reye syndrome. Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen instead.

4. Anti-diarrheal medicines - Using these may prolong intestinal infections in children.

5. Gas-relief drops - These are harmless but don’t always work.

6. Hydrogen peroxide - Not recommended for cleansing cuts, since it may cause tissue damage. Use soap and water instead.

What SHOULD be in my medicine cabinet?

Here are the medicine cabinet items you should have in your home, recommended by Dr. Suresh Nagappan, a pediatrician with Cone

Health Medical Group, Greensboro; Dr. Paul Smolen of Providence Pediatrics, Charlotte; and Dave Smithwick, a licenses registered

pharmacist & owner of Southern Village Pharmacy, Chapel Hill.

1. Antibacterial ointment and bandages - Use on scrapes and cuts to prevent them from becoming infected (Mupircin or Bactroban,

requires a prescription and is only for topical use).

2. Diaper rash cream (Zinc Oxide) - Layer it on to help clear diaper rash.

3. Antifungal cream - These creams kill or inactivate fungi and yeast.

4. Eye drops - A safe option for those who have allergies that result in itchy eyes.

5. Digital thermometer - A fever above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit typically requires a trip to the doctor.

6. Medicine syringes - Use these to ensure accurate dosing.

7. Children’s Acetaminophen - Useful for reducing fevers and pain, this comes in liquid, chewable tablets or suppositories.

8. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) - Good for treating an allergic reaction or severe itching from bug bites or poison ivy.

9. Hydrocortisone ointment (1%) - Helpful for minor cases of poison ivy, insect bites or eczema.

10. Suction bulb - This is very useful to help with congestion in infants. It can be used with saline drops.

11. Pedialyte (or other rehydration fluid) - Useful for preventing dehydration when your child has a stomach bug.

12. Antacids - These correct acidity levels to help remedy stomachaches.

13. Ibuprofen - Another good option for reducing fevers and pain.

14. Calamine lotion - Another topical option for relieving itchy rashes or bug bites.

15. EPI pen - Prescribed to people who have sever allergies.
