Located between Mount Etna and the Ionian

Sea, the Zash Country Hotel subtly

combines Sicilian wine-growing architecture

and the strictures of modernism.

To escape the stresses and strains of daily life, it is sometimes necessaryto find places which facilitate a return to calm and contemplation. TheItalian architect Antonio Iraci has succeeded in creating a paradisiacalworld in Sicily half way between Catana and Taormina. The ZashCountry Boutique Hotel is a former wine cellar dating from the 1930swhere nature and architectural genius have blended to create anexceptional building. The partners, the historical owner, Carla Maugeridi Riposto, and the architect, Antonio Iraci, had two initial advantages intheir favour: a breathtaking panoramic view and a building whichassembled all the qualities of authenticity of Mediterranean wine-growing architecture.

First, the venue. Located less than half a mile from the sea, the hotel isbuilt on a balcony which overlooks an idyllic garden covering 13 hectaresin which sweet-smelling orange and mandarin trees rustle in the seabreeze. In the distance, the dark blue of the Ionian Sea on one side andMount Etna on the other alternate between the white of the snow andthe black of the volcanic lava.

Entre Etna et mer Ionienne, l’hôtelZash Country marie avec subtilitéarchitecture viticole sicilienne etrigueur du modernisme.Pour se sortir des contraintes de la vie quotidienne, il est né-cessaire, parfois, de trouver des endroits qui facilitent le retourau calme et à la contemplation. L’architecte italien AntonioIraci a réussi à créer une telle bulle paradisiaque en Sicile, àmi-chemin entre Catane et Taormina. L’hôtel Zash CountryBoutique est un ancien cellier, datant des années trente, oùnature et génie architectural ont œuvré pour en faire une rési-dence hors du commun. Au départ, les partenaires, la propriétairehistorique, Carla Maugeri di Riposto, et l’architecte, AntonioIraci, disposaient de deux avantages : un panorama à couperle souffle et un bâtiment qui présentait toutes les qualitésd’authenticité d’une architecture viticole méditerranéenne.

Mais commençons par l’endroit. Situé à un kilomètre de la mer,l’hôtel est construit sur un balcon qui donne sur un vrai Jardindes Hespérides de treize hectares où orangers et mandariniersembaument et bruissent à la brise marine. Au loin, le bleusombre de la mer Ionienne d’un côté, l’Etna de l’autre, alternantentre le blanc de la neige et le noir de la lave.

Un ancien cellierL’ancien cellier, tout d’abord aménagé en hôtel particulier, neprésentait pas suffisamment de volume et d’aménagements pourle transformer en hôtel. Il a donc fallu lui faire subir une profondetransformation avec la volonté impérative de conserver l’espritdes lieux et les murs, dans la mesure du possible, tout enaugmentant les capacités d’hébergement.

Il en est résulté un mélange d’ancien et de moderne tel que l’hôtelZash a été décoré du prix PIDA 2013 (Packaging Impact DesignAward) et admis à Berlin, la même année, dans la liste happy fewdes Design Hotels. Ces distinctions, amplement méritées,récompensent le travail d’orfèvre de l’architecte qui a su allier lesanciennes voûtes du cellier aux extensions en béton, la pierre delave aux parois de verre, l’ambiance d’une demeure du début dusiècle dernier et le design moderne aux lignes pures, la couleurrosée d’origine et le blanc moderne et froid.

Le restaurant se situe dans l’ancien chai où se déroulait la vinification. L’odeurdes anciennes barriques a cédé la place au fumet d’une cuisine qui privilégie lerespect des saisons et des produits régionaux, donc des vins siciliens.

The restaurant is located in the former winery where wines were left to fermentand mature. The smell of the former wine casks has been replaced by the aro-mas of seasonal ingredients and local dishes, including Sicilian wines.

A former wine cellarThe former wine cellar, initially planned as a private home, lackedvolume and fixtures to enable it to be converted into a hotel.Major conversion work was therefore undertaken with the aim ofpreserving, where possible, the spirit of the place and the originalstructures, while increasing the hotel’s accommodation capacity.

The result is a successful blend of old and modern styles thatearned the Zash Hotel the 2013 Packaging Impact Design Award.It was also included that same year in the Berlin list of Happy FewDesigner Hotels. These largely deserved distinctions reward thecraftsmanship and skills of the architect who has successfullycombined the former vaulted arches of the wine cellar withconcrete extensions, the lava stone with the glass walls and themood of a building dating from the beginning of the last centurywith a modern design with its pure lines, original pink andmodern and cold white colours.

Laid out in a blissful and idyllic garden that smells of sweet orange blossom,the hotel’s swimming-pool reflects the colour of the sky and beckons visitors totake a dip.

Une des chambres situées dans l’ancien cellier : les voûtes en pierre delave racontent une histoire vieille d’un siècle, les aménagements en résineblanche vous ramènent au XXIe siècle.

Le jardin des agrumes n’est pas qu’un décor. Il est aussi à disposition pour ydéguster un verre de Nero d’Avola ou un repas complet en plein air, sous lagarde de l’Etna.

The citrus tree garden is more than a mere decorative feature. It also offers gueststhe opportunity to sample a glass of Nero d’Avola or to enjoy a full meal outdoors,under the protection of Mount Etna.

Trois zones, trois atmosphèresL’hôtel comporte neuf chambres réparties en trois zones. Quatresont logées dans le bâtiment principal, correspondant àl’ancienne maison de maître. Larges fenêtres donnant sur lamer, plafonds voûtés, c’est l’ambiance d’un manoir riched’histoire. Trois sont logées dans l’ancien cellier où le blanc deséléments en résine répond au noir des blocs de lave, c’est lerappel du travail des vignerons encaveurs de l’époque. Les deuxdernières, extérieures, sont immergées dans les orangers.Equipées de larges baies, elles donnent aux visiteursl’impression de vivre dans le jardin.

Les autres locaux – le hall d’accueil, le restaurant installé dansl’ancien chai où se déroulait la vinification –, les équipements –la piscine, les équipements sportifs – sont tous traités avec lamême subtilité entre respect de l’ancien et du moderne.

Sur la terrasse de l’hôtel, devant le vert du jardin des agrumeset le bleu violacé de la mer, on se dit que la coopération desarchitectes du XXe et celui du XXIe siècle a créé un cocon quimagnifie l’hospitalité italienne. �

Three sections, three atmospheresThe hotel comprises nine bedrooms divided into three sections. Fourare located in the main building which was the formers wine master’shouse. Wide windows overlooking the sea and arched ceilingsrecreate the atmosphere of an affluent period manor-house. Threebedrooms in the former wine cellar, where the white resin elementsecho the black of the volcanic lava blocks, are a reminder of the workof the expert wine-growers (vignerons encaveurs) at that time. Thefinal two bedrooms, with their large bay windows, nestle in a groveof orange trees, giving guests the impression that they are living in agarden.

The other structures (the reception hall, restaurant in the formerwinery where the wines fermented and matured) and other facilities(the swimming-pool, sports fixtures) reflect the architect’s respect forand concern to preserve old and new.

On the hotel terrace in front of the green garden laid out with citrusfruit trees and overlooking the mauvish blue sea, one is left with theimpression that the plans of a 20th century architect and a 21th centuryarchitect have successfully merged to create a cosy inner world thatreinforces Italian hospitality. �
