DESIGN THRUST MESSAGE

The Design Thrust has been very busy during the past months with the launch of several awards and competitions, namely:

Furthermore, two publications were launched in the last quarter:

SIA Architectural Design Awards (SIAADA)The SIA Architectural Design Awards series is the most prestigious award conferred by the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) to promote and encourage distinction in architectural design.

What’s New in SIAADA 2016?New Categorisation for Overseas ProjectsOverseas projects will be assessed under the respective categories. The project submitted must have been completed and the SIA Member was

for that project.

New Participation Fees (inclusive of GST)To encourage participation, the committee has reviewed and lowered the participation fees for multiple entries.

The Awards has recently closed on 4th July and we thank members for their support in submitting their projects this year. The Jury will be deliberating on the entries and the winners will be announced on Awards Night on 28th September. Full details of the awards can be found on the SIA Architectural Design Awards website below.

SIA-Uniseal G-Architect AwardA G-Architect’s projects celebrate passive design in response to environmental performance, and integrate successfully active design strategies and new technologies.

SIA and our Partner, Uniseal Singapore, jointly organise the 2nd SIA-Uniseal G-Architect Award that will honour an Asian architect for his/her contribution to sustainable architecture. Submission to this award will close on 10th July. For more details, log on to the G-Architect Award website below.

Archifest 2016 Pavilion Design CompetitionArchifest celebrates the city we love in all its varied forms and elements. This landmark 10th edition of the Festival invites participants to step back and take stock. This year, the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) and the Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) will collaborate to broaden the discussion on design, culture and our built environment.

This year’s theme, “EXHALE”, seeks to encompass this added dimension - how we experience our city as an urban landscape and our very physical relationship to it. Visitors will be given the opportunity to take a breather and celebrate the particular sensibilities, aesthetics and practices we have developed and articulated - in a fun and engaging way. From 23rd September to 9th October, a host of events will be held at the

This year marks the return of the Archifest Pavilion, which is envisioned to be the physical manifestation of the Archifest’s spirit this year - Exhale. It is imagined to be a temporary, outdoor recreational venue which reinvents our experience of a public space in Singapore, providing a comfortable, unique and multi-sensorial experience of the city to be enjoyed by everyone. The competition closed on 17th June.

St. John’s Home For Elderly Persons Design CompetitionOver the years, SIA has performed its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in several areas, such as donating to charity, awarding scholarships and prizes to students, involvement in community projects, promoting design for barrier free accessibility, promoting ecological friendly design, etc.

In November 2013, the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) heard about the Home’s Building Redevelopment Project and promptly introduced St John’s Home to SIA.

Together with SIA, the St John’s Home organized a two-stage design competition for the new premises to care for the residents in the best possible way, supported by well-thought-out design - a place for happy residents, a good work environment for the staff and for volunteers to visit and support the programmes of the home.

The competition was launched on 7th April and was well received with 52 entries. The 2nd Stage judging will take place on 15th July.

Apart from organising the above design competitions, SIA had assisted in the publicity of the Redevelopment of the Red Cross House - 7 entries have been shortlisted and a winning scheme will be decided soon.

and global network. Locally, this publication serves as a useful resource to government agencies, developers and other allied organisations, and

helpful in identifying appropriate capabilities and corresponding practices.

The current edition, published in March, presents a cross-section of architectural practices in Singapore and the variety of projects SIA members undertake.

Themed ‘Colour’, the 3rd Edition of the Singapore Architect is part of an alternating series that allow readers to pause in the way they look, study

the following issues out on time at the beginning of each quarter.

With a colourful palate of varied activities under the Design Thrust, we are deeply grateful for the strong support from our members and fellow Architects who volunteer to serve on these committees. We look forward optimistically to further collaborations.

fraternity. Members are looking forward to the next in line talks by Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam in September 2016 and Minister Lawrence Wong in May 2017.

This year, the Thrust will also be organising the SIA Conference 2016 (formerly known as Archifest Conference) on 28 September 2016, at ArchXpo 2016 (which will be held at Marina Bay Sands, 28-30 September 2016) in conjunction with the Singapore Architecture Festival - ArchiFest. It is an annual key note event highly anticipated by our fraternity where we witness lively exchanges of ideas and ideologies, from subject experts and thought leaders worldwide about unique challenges and creative solutions for our evolving global urban landscape.

The theme for the conference this year is slowCITY. Being a city state, centred in a region of rapid urbanisation and growth, we are often engulfed

these corporeal requirements and still reap desirable results in the near future? The conference seeks to examine alternative transformative ways of life and design. Previously established concepts include Città Slow and Slow Architecture forms sources of refreshed models of living and built environments. How can architects be main drivers in offering a slower, softer environment that is more productive for our society? These are some of the subjects we would like to discuss during the conference.

We will continue to provide exciting events for the fraternity and look forward to all member’s active and continuous participation.

Education Thrust’s objectives are to create platform for knowledge sharing through educational programmes of talks and coursed, to elevate standard of architectural professionalism, to promote continuous learning, help architects develop professionally through continuous updating and upgrading of their skills set and knowledge, and to strengthen outreach to younger architect & students through knowledge sharing and transfer.

Sustaining Growth The “Manpower-Lean” Way by Lim Swee Say16 JUNE 2016, Thursday3.00pm – 5.00pmSIA Theatrette - Level 3, 79 Neil Road

Let us unlock the thousands of valuable manpower in our senior veteran architects. The Minister gave a very stimulating presentation in his unique style.

productive. The work force is better educated but ageing. We need to upgrade, minimize job-skill mismatch to meet need of business and career aspiration.

Challenges can be overcome by tripartite partnership at national and sectoral levels. Ministry for Manpower has divided the workforce into 25 sectors. Architecture practice is slotting into that for Built-environment.

Productivity depends much on workforce, yet for social and other reasons; we shall have to meet growth with zero immigration without compromising productivity. It implies architects have to aim to design, construct and manage with zero labour. When commented that architecture work is unique, he responded that every sector also wanted to be treated uniquely, meaning we have to present our case more fully.

From 1960 to 2015, Singapore produced some 2,500 graduates; about two thirds of them have become retired or turned veteran. They can be mobilized for active service to serve the city in all aspects of improving, upgrading and redevelopment. Today’s focus on job numbers, CAD skills and buildings only, will

intangible will decrease in value.

We need to address the issue of not just shortage of workforce but the real shortage of usefulness of an educated workforce. It takes more than 10 years to produce a QP architect. Today his usefulness span no more than 20 years. Worse, it is a case of the more architects we produce, the earlier they retire. It is a huge waste to the economy, the society and the built environment. Architects are good workers. Let us keep them employable for as long as they are healthy!

SIACAD - APEX 14 Launch14 FEBRUARY 2016

As in previous upgrades, our latest version of APEX was launched on an exact date and precise time which coincides with version number. This time APEX 14 was launched on 14th February at 14:14:14. Although it was on a Sunday, Valentine’s Day and in the thick of the Chinese New Year celebrations, several principals, system administrators and users (including 2 from overseas) took the time to attend.

After both events, we received much encouragement and glowing testimonials from users:

“The new version’s theme ‘Relationship Unlimited’ with its launching held on Valentine’s Day, indeed is appropriate for the new features that APEX offers…The multi-language that can be customized and handled locally by system administrators will facilitate communication with clients and service providers. In Aidea, we are expanding our businesses and networking globally. APEX will help reach and convince our partners of our intention to build relationship thru this kind of communication tool.”

“APEX 14 has so much to offer and it is certainly good to hear that you and your team have responded to feedback and continue to make APEX awesome. It is certainly very challenging to come up with new version every year, and you guys are just amazing- having to take care of the practical & technical aspect as well as the aesthetics part as well. Kudos to you and your team. 2 thumbs up!”

TANG SAU KIT, LIU & WO ARCHITECTS PTE LTD

“ADDP Architects started APEX in 2011. Every year, we look forward to the launch of the new release. The launch of APEX 14 was fantastic with cool & faster speed to retrieve emails / contacts. SIACAD Team, you have moved APEX to another peak. Well done & looking forward to next year’s launch.”

WENDY OW, ADDP ARCHITECTS LLP

“We have started using APEX in 2010. Since then, we are well pleased with the system for its excellent capabilities with easy and

all communication and records such as project management, scheduling, monitoring and even human resource management can be done by APEX. Most impressed with the team in SIACAD which is making constant effort to improve it with the launch of a new version every year. We were invited for feedback in Dec 2015

newly launched in 14 Feb 2016. We are indeed excited and look forward to use it with all our staff.”

CHUA SEOW ANN, SA CHUA ARCHITECTS PTE LTD

“A great stride in upping the game of e-management. I have every

for a long time. Most important of all is that we are empowering our SIA Members!”

THEODORE CHAN, CIAP ARCHITECTS PTE LTD

To reach out to those who couldn’t attend, we had a 2-sessions rerun on 25th February. Both sessions were packed. The atmosphere was unlike other events, there was a lot of interaction between the presenters and the audience. There was also a deep feeling of camaraderie amongst users, most of them with a genuine interest to share with one another and help each other improve and excel. During the thick of the enthusiastic exchanges, we also picked up some suggestions and ideas for the next upgrade!

For the uninitiated, APEX (Architectural Practice EXcellence) is a cloud-based integrated information management system developed by SIACAD Pte Ltd over the past 14 years based on interactions with users, collective sharing of practice tips amongst users and adapting these ideas into a quick and easy to user one-point solution. Users simply log into their APEX portal using their desktops or mobile devices in any operating system and make use of the fully integrated projects, emails, timesheets, leave, claims, contacts,

else to install - just use your web browser to access all these within one point of entry.

The information is fully integrated. You plan an event for a project for you and your colleagues, APEX will check for clashes i.e. whether anyone is

event / project. It will send all of your reminders of the event, prepare the transportation claims if it’s an external event, book resources such as notebooks or projector for that event. The management can immediately do timesheet reports to do preliminary cost analysis for that project! No other timesheet / event planning solution comes close.

Several of the modules like Leave and claims management are highly

(Scheduling) is based on our local authorities submission guidelines. However, as these are easily customisable, several of our users have customised versions running concurrently for their subsidiaries in Philippines, Malaysia, China, Vietnam, Australia etc.

In a nutshell, over the years we have improved and expanded APEX so much so that there is absolutely no other single solution that can handle all these information and project management issues anywhere as effectively as APEX in a single integrated system. Competitively priced at a monthly subscription rate of $10.00 per user per month for SIA Members (subject to a minimum rate of $50 per month), it is indeed the most power-packed and cost-effective solution for our SIA Members. And we keep improving every year by releasing a free upgrade that is based on feedback and suggestions from our users. Our next upgrade, APEX 15, will be revealed exactly on 15th March 2017 precisely at 15:15:15. Users are already looking forward to attending!
