According to the U. S. Energy Information Administration
(EIA) the United States will be, or already has become, the world’s top
producer of petroleum and natural gas in 2013, surpassing Russia and
Saudi Arabia. The U. S. now produces over 7.7 MMBO per day vs.
6.5 MMBO at this time last year. In 2016 domestic oil production is
expected to be 9.6 MMBO per day, close to the historical high set in
1970. In 1956, M. King Hubbert correctly predicted that production
would peak in 1970. What Mr. Hubbert did not know about was the
recent advances in horizontal drilling and multi-stage fracs and
applying this technology to formations previously considered to be too
tight, like the Bakken and Eagle Ford. Once again American
technology is leading the world. Way to go oil and gas industry!
I hope that everyone who attended Dr. Harry Roberts’ talk on
land loss along the Louisiana coastline enjoyed it. I found it to be very
interesting and informative. I was especially
“blown away” by the slide that shows the
predicted shoreline by the year 2100. New
Orleans will be on a skinny peninsula sticking
out in the Gulf with large embayments on
both sides of the Mississippi River! For those
of you who missed this talk or would like to
review it again, I’ve got good news. Our

CONNECTEDAT EVERY TOUCH POINT
The IHS suite of geoscience software—which includes IHS Petra®, Kingdom®, LOGarc™ and GeoSyn™—is designed to seamlessly connect to the industry’s leading source of critical Oil & Gas information, eliminating the need to move data manually from source to source and project to project. With this powerful new combination, users can streamline data transfer, enhance database performance and simplify project sharing. The result? Workows that connect like never before.
Connected workows mean that IHS customers spend less time looking for data and more time looking for the next big opportunity. It’s just one of the many ways that IHS helps to advance the decisions that advance the Oil & Gas industry.

Our next speaker, on February 18th, is Rick Turner. Just about
every other year, Rick has a thought provoking talk to give. This talk
is “Evaluating Shale Plays Using Conventional Open-Hole Well
Logs”. So, sign up early for this one.
As I announced at our last meeting, I received a letter from the
AAPG regarding how many SGS members are also registered AAPG
members. That number is 89. Therefore, we will have only 1 AAPG
Delegate.
The Science Fair will be held in March. We need some SGS
members to be judges. Please contact Alan Brittain to volunteer.
Finally, the Geology and Wine
meeting has been set for the evening of
April 11th. This year, for the first time, you
can buy tickets online at sgs1.org/events. I
did, it was quick and easy. There is an
additional $3.50/person processing fee if
you order online.

Biography
Rick Turner lives in his
hometown of Marshall, Texas. He
graduated from Marshall High
School, attended Stephen F. Austin
University, and graduated in 1973
with a B.S. degree in Geology.
After graduation, Mr. Turner served
a tour of active duty in the U.S.
Army. Following his tour of duty,
he entered the graduate school at
Texas A&M University and earned
a Master of Science Degree in
Geology in 1977. After graduation, he joined Gulf Oil Company in
Houston as an Exploration Geologist and worked the Gulf Coast
Mesozoic. In 1981, he returned to East Texas and worked for several
years in Shreveport with the independent oil companies. In 1990, he
began working for Fina Oil and Chemical Company in Tyler, Texas.
In 1998, he joined Barrow-Shaver Resources Company in Tyler where
he presently serves as Vice President of Exploration.
Mr. Turner is a Certified Petroleum Geologist who has served
as president of the Shreveport Geological Society and the East Texas
Geological Society. He has also been President of the Shreveport
Chapter of the Society of Professional Well Log Analysts. He is a
frequent speaker at Geological Society meetings in Shreveport, Tyler,
and Dallas. He has published over a dozen papers on numerous
aspects of oil and gas exploration in the Gulf Coast Mesozoic. His talk
entitled “The uncertainty of Carbon Dioxide – Climate Rider of
Climate Driver” won the prestigious A.I. Levorsen Award at the 2008
convention of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

Abstract
“Evaluating Shale Plays Using Conventional Open Hole Well Logs”
Before evaluating shale, the nature of the porosity system
should be considered. Shale plays can be broadly divided into two
basic categories: shale consisting predominately of clay and calcite
(Eagleford); and shale consisting predominately of clay and silica
(Eaglebine). The clay-rich East Texas Eaglebine is the focus of this
discussion. In the East Texas Eaglebine, the reservoir porosity appears
to have been created by the conversion of organic material to
hydrocarbon. When a particle of organic material is converted to
hydrocarbon, a liquid filled nanopore is created. In SEM images the
pores appear as flake-like cracks in the shale matrix that average 0.15
microns in width and 20 microns in length. The flake or chip like
appearance has caused the pores to be informally described as “potato
chip porosity”. The pores range from sparse, isolated cracks to densely
concentrated, interconnected swarms. In some cases, the pores join to
form continuous, irregular laminae. The pore system is a diagenetic
feature that does not exist until the sediments reach the hydrocarbon
window (Ro values > 0.8). The pore system is hydrophobic (oil wet)
because the water in the shale is consumed by the kerogen to
hydrocarbon conversion process. In addition, the pore system is
overpressured because the hydrocarbon supports a portion of the

overburden weight. During drilling and production the pressure
differential between the formation and the borehole must be controlled.
If a large pressure differential occurs, the hydrocarbon will expand and
split the nanopores along bedding planes causing the sediment to
disaggregate.
Well log suites that include both density-neutron and sonic logs
can yield a significant amount of information about the productive
capability of the nanopore system when the data are cross plotted in a
meaningful way. One of the most widely used plotting methods is the
Delta Log-R plot (Passey, et.al., 1990). In this method, porosity values
and deep resistivity values are plotted against depth. The curves are
scaled in such a way that they overlay in shales that contain little or no
organic material and separate in zones that are organic rich. The total

organic carbon (TOC) percent can be estimated using a value for the
level of organic metamorphism (LOM) and a mathematical relationship
shown in Passey’s article.
High nanoporosity zones can be highlighted by plotting the
neutron porosity curve with sonic delta-T. If the curves are scaled so
that they overlay in zones with no nanoporosity, in zones with high
nanoporosity the curves will separate when the delta-T values increase
due to a greater abundance of nanoporosity. Additional information
can be obtained by calculating the rock strength parameter called
“IMOD” that utilizes the bulk density and delta-T measurements.
IMOD values can be compared from well to well and may be
correlated to values of Possion’s Ratio and Young’s Modulus. Also,
effective porosity in the shale can be calculated using a triangular
density-neutron plot based on a clay point and clean sand point.
“Rwa” in the shale can be calculated using effective porosity from the
density-neutron triangle plot. The resulting Rwa curve often mirrors
the gas curve on the mudlog and is a good hydrocarbon indicator.
The sand-clay-calcite components in the shale can be estimated
by calculating “Nlith”. “NLITH” is a function of the difference
between the neutron porosity in the formation fluid and the neutron log
value divided by the difference between the bulk density log value and
the bulk density of the formation fluid.
By combining the various log calculations into a display of log
curves, the productive capability, rock strength, and lithology can be
estimated and correlated to better define trends of interest and play
limits. All that is required are conventional log suites that include
sonic logs and well as density-neutron logs.
