Now that we've passed the winter solstice the days are getting

longer. This time of the year brings with it new hope and new

possibilities. Many of our SGS members still generate oil and/or gas

prospects for a living. So, my New Year's wish for you is that you get

your prospect(s) drilled this year and that you have much success!

Happy drilling!

Judging by the number of questions asked by those attending

the December meeting I'd say that Art Berman succeeded in giving his

usual thought provoking talk. Art spoke about shale plays in the U. S.

and zeroed in on the Haynesville and Eagle Ford plays. His research

shows that the companies involved in these plays are spending more

than their gross revenues. The only wells that may pay out are located

in very limited "sweet spots" that can only be defined after many wells

have been drilled. Not a good deal!

Our January speaker will be Harry Roberts and his talk is

"Land Loss in the Mississippi Delta and the Important Role of River

Diversions". Please help Roger Berg out by signing up early (no later

than Friday afternoon) and if you do register please attend!

Apparently, we've had a number of members rsvp for a meeting and

then not show up. The SGS gets charged for the no shows, so try to

I'd like to recognize the service of SGS member David

Williamson. While working the Mock Dig he made contact with a

local cub scout leader which led to a geology presentation to the South

Highlands Magnet Pack 4. Thanks to David approximately 25 cub

scouts have earned a merit badge in geology.

The SGS/ALTAPL Christmas party was held on December

5th. Due to illness, I was not able to attend this year but I've been

informed that there was a good turnout and lots of toys and money

were donated to the Salvation Army.

Transactions Submissions: An abstract of not more than 250 words should be submitted no later than 06 January 2014. Please email abstracts to the Technical Program Chair, Bill Finley at ([email protected]). Notification of acceptance will be sent by 20 January 2014. Oral and poster presenters must submit a paper of 10–12 pages or an extended abstract with key figures for review by 17 March 2014. Detailed instructions to authors for manuscript submission will be provided upon acceptance of abstracts. Journal Submissions: An extended abstract of at least 600 words, including 1–2 representative figures recommended, should be submitted no later than 16 December 2013 via email to the Journal Editor, Tucker Hentz ([email protected]). With acceptance, a full manuscript must be submitted for fast-track peer review by 24 March 2014. Detailed instructions to authors for manuscript submission will be provided upon acceptance of abstracts. Note that all Journal authors are required to present their results at the 2014 GCAGS Convention.
