Ntataise – an overview
• A pioneer of ECD in South Africa
• Founded 1980
• First on farms: targeting farm worker’s wives and children
• Expanded to rural villages and towns
• Developed Network of Independent and sustainable organisations
• One of the first ECD social franchises in South Africa
• Helped put ECD in disadvantaged communities on National map

Ntataise today…
• Ntataise Network– 17 independent ECD training and development organisations, with
approx. 200 staff who we mentor and train. These organisations in
turn reach some 4 000 ECD practitioners, 3 000 pre-schools and
130 000 young children
– National reach – in 7 of the 9 provinces

– Ntataise Network Support Programme - mentoring, capacity building
and leadership development

• Ntataise Free State operations– Ntataise’s “on the ground” operations
– Started in 1980 with 6 farm pre-schools, 150 children and 12
practitioners. Currently works in the Free State with 300 practitioners,
200 pre-schools and 12 000 pre-school children
– Paved the way for expansion of ECD in the Free State and other
provinces pre and post 1994
– Incubator – Works with communities to develop and pilot Ntataise
programmes
