Altogether we need approximately 35 volunteers and 10 of these people will cook a turkey for us that day in their home. A sign-up form is in the office. This is a fun activity together, and many hands make light work. This is a wonderful service provided for the residents who do not have family and/or just cannot prepare a meal like this for themselves any more. Board Minutes Submitted by Pam Ingram, Secretary

Present: Peter Cavoto, Pam Ingram, Janet Swaim, Wayne Walworth, and Jan Pitts by phone.

The President assigned Building and Grounds to research options for the recycling containers and location and for Planning to develop a plan for Bocce umbrellas. The Superstition Center roof is on target and the title to finalize Sunset Center as part of the Campus was ordered. New loungers are in and more matching chairs for the pool to come soon.

The Manager stated that Ocotillo Center remediation of skylights, flooring, ceiling by the contractor were completed. Insurance claims were approved, including the light at the Sunset Center.

The following were approved unanimously.Mountain Brook Golf Course Ad Hoc committee charter with

Peter Cavoto as Liaison.Funding Village Voices seed money of $3700 which is replaced

with ticket sales. The revision of the Board schedule to Oct. 30 Board Mtg., Dec.

12 Board Workshop and Dec. 19 Board Mtg.Wash maintenance from Coy for Wildcat retention area, a

drainage channel behind 4939 Desert Willow, and clearing dirt and rock from drainage on Cat Claw for $3804.

The Manager was directed to get architectural drawings and bids for Option A to increase Pickle Ball courts.

The light post outside the Sunset Center will be replaced from insurance storm damage claim.

Funding of $500 for Christmas lights.Funding for a Glass Kiln and stand. Approval of the bid for the walkway from the golf cart parking

for $3552.At the workshop, the pros and cons of locations for the Canyon

Cookout were presented. The Board approved to move the Canyon Cookout to Mesquite Center/Horseshoe area by 3 to 2, Janet and Peter dissenting.

The draft letter from the MBV Golf Course Ad Hoc failed and was sent back to committee for revision until October.

MBV BOARD HIGHLIGHTSBy Peter Cavoto, President

The Board and I welcome back winter residents and new owners to our beautiful MountainBrook Village. We did survive the monsoons and heat and are looking forward to winter. Remember, Coffee and News is a great place to hear what is happening in MBV.

Our manager, Suzanne, has been working hard on insurance claims and we hope to have a new light at the Sunset Center and other compensation for trees soon. You received an email blast that Brendan from Mountain Brook Golf course will be seeding, planting trees and taking care of weeds in October. An Ad Hoc committee was created to write a letter and communicate with the MBV Golf Course for maintenance. Larry England is chair of that Ad Hoc committee and members are Sue Wright and Bob Campbell.

Part of the role of the BOD is to maintain and increase the value of

our individual homes and our community assets. That is the reason our buildings were remodeled and there is landscape maintenance. If there were not architectural guidelines and ongoing maintenance/refurbishment then our community, even with our glorious mountain, would lose value. Fifteen years ago, we chose to build the Superstition Center and now we enjoy many events there. Few can imagine MBV without it.

This Board asked the Planning committee to analyze input of the users (Pickleball, Tennis and Bocce) to see how we can meet their needs. We asked the Building and Grounds committee to look at one more option for courts moving Bocce to the horseshoe pits. Though land in MBV is limited there is land to the west of present Pickleball courts that was recommended by Building and Grounds. Another plan suggests switching Tennis and Pickleball locations. The old horse shoe pits are also prime land for many needs.

Please contact us at [email protected] with comments, etc.

Those Pesky HOAsFALL & PLANTS GO TOGETHER………Part I: Name Those Plants!A suggestion by Shannon at the front desk led to a project that

started many months ago and was finally completed in September by Debbie O’Brien, and our 2 Master Gardeners, Pam Ingram and BJ Jensen. Look for Plant “Namestakes” near various plants and trees along the sidewalk leading to the Activity Office’s front door. You will see the plant’s common name and the botanical name. How easy is that? Sign out a full color “Landscape Plants for the AZ Desert” notebook at the front desk for more information on approved plants and trees for your yard and look on the MBV website too!

Part II: Attend Fall Plant Sales! Attend your local plant sales! Boyce Thompson Arboretum’s fall

plant sale starts October 14th with the last day being October 29th. Arboretum staff is joined by helpful volunteers from Pinal County’s Superstition Master Gardeners Program who are available to advise and assist buyers.

Our Gold Canyon Garden Club’s Sale and Raffle is October 21, from 8-11 a.m. at the GC Methodist Church. Ask questions, take pictures, pick up the MBV plant/tree list from the office to take with you, or on your phone and make sure the plants you choose to buy for your landscape are on the MBV plant list. Have fun!

This year’s theme is CHRISTMAS, CHRISTMAS. The concert will again entertain its audiences with 90 minutes of religious, humorous, romantic and traditional Christmas music and songs. Music and songs were selected by our choir director, Patty Sobek. Patty and the choir will be accompanied by the very talented Marty Robison on the piano. Patty promises that this will be another “Best Ever” concert.

Our second Educational Conference will be November 28, 2018, 11am also at the Community Room at the Fire Station. The topic will be,” Do you need a Certified Senior Realtor”? New Life Story Writing Class For over twelve years, Barb Hofmeister has been teaching Life

Story Writing classes in the east valley. Starting in late October, she will be teaching at Central Arizona College (CAC) in Apache Junction. If you can write a letter, you can write your life story but where does one begin? Barb teaches writing short stories then linking them together to make your whole life story. It’s one story at a time and very easy. Her students marvel at how easy it is to follow her workbook which you receive when you attend the first class. The eight week course starts Thursday, October 24 from 1-3 at the Superstition Campus in Apache Junction. This class is for beginners who have not taken the class previously. Advanced classes will be available in the spring at Superstition, Casa Grande and San Tan campuses.

Think about this: No one writes letters anymore and emails and tweets don’t make for a very lasting legacy. Since each life is unique and there will be no bundles of letters tied with a ribbon left when you are gone, leaving your story behind makes sense. Barb says, “I wish I knew more about my mother. Like most, I was more concerned with my own life and didn’t ask her anything about her young life. I wish I knew what her dreams were, what she would have done if she could and what she thought about her life. Now that she is gone I can’t ask her.” One extra benefit of writing your story, especially if your life was difficult, is that it frees you from carrying it any longer. Once written, a huge weight will be lifted, even if you throw it away. To register call or write Joel Beck, BBA, CPP, Coordinator of Lifelong Learning at Central Arizona College, 805 South Idaho Road, Apache Junction, AZ 85119, telephone: 480-677-7721. E-mail [email protected]. There is a fee of $99 for the course and the text book is included with the registration.

Barb Hofmeister has completed her life story which is titled My Rocky Road to the Good Life—the whole story. It is available on Amazon.com in both kindle and paperback version.

It Took a Summer to Cross Texas

by Peggy Malsom Now I remember why I read a book while I drove across

Texas in 1971. I am so bored. You have never heard me say that before because I believe a person should not get bored. There are simply too many options to keep an active mind busy. But the drive between El Paso and Fort Stockton, Texas, is simply boring.

We have spotted our first oil well and long-horned cattle. I pulled out the Roadside Geology of Texas (yes, we actually have them for several states) and tried to elevate our intellectual appreciation of flat and monotonous. Roadside called this area “real West Texas desert country” as “the road sweeps across flat, gravelly open land…” The speed limit here is 80 mph. Even at that speed, it is flat and monotonous.

Next, I Googled the lyrics to songs about two West Texas cities. Luckily, I was raised listening to country-western music so these two are familiar classics. The results were Marty Robbin’s “El Paso” about a doomed romance and Willie Nelson’s “San Antonio Rose” about, well, a doomed romance. It’s country music after all. I sang them until Dennis begged me to stop then threatened me with bodily harm if I didn’t.

My mother-in-law always said, “This too shall pass” and it will. Then we will be in Texas Hill Country. Now that is my kind of country: Bluebonnets and barbeque. I felt the lure of Texas pulling at me with a Lyle Lovett refrain: “That’s right, you’re not from Texas. But Texas wants you anyways.” Yee-haw!

P.S. There is a postscript to this story that I penned in August. We arrived at our daughter’s house in Austin just in time for the wind and rain that was Hurricane Harvey. It wasn’t anything compared to what Houston received, but it was enough to remind me to be careful what I wish for and grateful for the blessings we receive.

If you can start the day without caffeine,

If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without alcohol,

If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

Then You Are Probably The Family Dog!

And you thought I was going to get all spiritual ...

Handle every Stressful situation like a dog.

This, That & Other Things

Just in case ya didn’t know... (and remember, anything you might see

under This, That and Other Things is always just for fun. We have all been thru too much to take anything too seriously)

Minnesota became the 32nd state on May 11, 1858 and was originally settled by a lost tribe of Swedes seeking refuge from the searing heat of Wisconsin ‘s winters.

Minnesota gets its name from the Sioux Indian word “mah-nee-soo-tah,” meaning, “No, really...!!!! They eat fish soaked in lye.”

The state song of Minnesota is “Someday the Vikings will... Aw, never mind.”

The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota covers 9.5 million square feet and has enough space to hold 185,000 idiot teenagers yapping away on cell phones.

Madison, Minnesota is known as “the lutefisk capital of the world.” Avoid this city at all costs.

“The Mary Tyler Moore Show” was set in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was Mary’s first real acting job since leaving the “Dick van Dyke Show”. The show about a single woman’s struggle to find happiness in the big city was originally titled “Life Without Dick,” but that was changed for some reason.

Downtown Minneapolis has an enclosed skyway system covering 52 blocks, allowing people to live, work, eat, and sleep without ever going outside. The only downside to this is that a Swede occasionally turns up missing.

Cartoonist Charles M. Shultz was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and grew up in St. Paul. He was the only artist to accurately depict the perfectly circular heads of Minnesota natives.

The Hormel Company of Austin, Minnesota produces 6 million cans of Spam a year, even though no one actually eats it. Spam is a prized food in Japan & Hawaii--Spam sushi!!

Minnesota license plates are blue & white and contain the phrase “Blizzards on the 4th of July - you get used to it.”

Frank C. Mars, founder of the Mars Candy Co. was born in Newport, Minnesota. His 3 Musketeers candy bar originally contained three bars in one wrapper, each filled with a different flavor of nougat -chocolate, Spam and lutefisk.

Tonka trucks continue to be manufactured in Minnetonka, Minnesota, despite the thousands of GI Joe dolls killed by them annually in rollover accidents. No airbags, no seat belts. These things are deathtraps, I tell ya!

Author Laura Ingalls Wilder was raised at Walnut Grove, Minnesota, and was famous for writing the “Little House” series of books, as well as inventing the “Spam diet” which consists of

looking at a plate of Spam until you lose your appetite. Much like the “lutefisk diet”

The snowmobile was invented in Roseau, Minnesota so as to allow families a means of attending 4th of July picnics

Minnesotans are almost indistinguishable from Wisconsinites. The only way to tell them apart is to ask if they voted for Mondale in ‘84.

Now... it’s up to you to forward this to all your friends If one of them does not forward it to others, he/she will be given an entrance pin to attend the Eelpout Festival in Walker, MN....in February --

Cold is a relative thing ya know.... At 65 degrees, Arizonans turn on the heat.

People in Minnesota plant gardens. At 60, Californians shiver uncontrollably.

People in Minnesota sunbathe. At 50, Italian & English cars won’t start.

People in Minnesota drive with the windows down.

At 40, Georgians don coats, thermal underwear, gloves, wool hats. People in Minnesota throw on a flannel shirt.

At 35, New York landlords finally turn up the heat. People in Minnesota have the last cookout before it gets cold.

At 30, People in Miami all die. Minnesotans close their windows.

At 0, Californians fly away to Mexico. People in Minnesota get out their winter coats.

At 10 below zero, Hollywood disintegrates. The Girl Scouts in Minnesota are selling cookies door to door.

At 20 below, Washington DC runs out of hot air. (Ya think? Nah.). People in Minnesota let their dogs sleep indoors.

At 30 below, Santa Claus abandons the North Pole. Minnesotans get upset because they can’t start the snowmobile.

At 40 below, ALL atomic motion stops. People in Minnesota start saying...”Cold enough for ya, eh?”

At 50 below, hell freezes over. Minnesota public schools will open 2 hours late.

In The Territoryby Mike Karr

There is a relatively new museum in Scottsdale that is very deserving of your patronage. The “Western Spirit, Scottsdale’s Museum of the West” opened in an architecturally distinctive building in 2015 at First Street and Marshall Way. The 43,000 square foot structure is divided into an auditorium and eight exhibit spaces where exhibits from different collectors and institutions are rotated so there is always something new and different to enjoy.

The day we were there it was 110 degrees outside and in the courtyard which featured several spectacular sculptures, but it was very comfortable strolling through the museum while reading and listening to descriptions of the various exhibits. One area was devoted to posters advertising old western movies with numerous John Wayne banners. Another section surrounded us with exquisite saddles, spurs, sheriff’s badges, cattle whips and “wanted” dead or alive posters. Other exhibits featured famous western artists and sculptors with an emphasis on the history and unique stories of the 19 states of the American West. Special emphasis was placed on Native American paintings and Lewis and Clark’s exploratory trip to the West Coast. The gift shop features distinctively designed western merchandise such as pottery, western rugs, books, belts and hats.

To add to your Western Adventures, this museum should definitely be included in your explorations of historical and interesting places to visit “In The Territory”. Check their website at www.scottsdalemuseumwest.org for hours of operation and what’s on display the day you plan your next “adventure”. You can check Trip Advisor to see what others think about this award-winning museum.

Artist of the MonthWes StevenWes has been carving for 30 years

and is mostly self-taught. He says our group, The MountainBrook Chippers, meets on Mondays at 1:00 pm in the Fine Arts Room in the Ocotillo Center. It is an informal group and they welcome newcomers. Everyone is willing to share their knowledge and help each other. Newcomers need not bring any tools until they are comfortable that “widdlin” is for them. Please visit the display case in the library to view some of his beautiful carvings.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY by Nancy BozekI stopped at the library recently and found a group of books on the

bench, outside in front of the office. Earlier this summer the same thing happened on a weekend. We realize that the office is closed on weekends but your FOB should let you in through the main doors. If for some reason the FOB does not work on that door, please go around to the side entrance and try it there. The weather conditions are unpredictable this time of year and we would hate to see damage done to the books because of weather.

We are very grateful for your continued support of our library. We have had overwhelming donations during this summer and we do appreciate your generosity. Thank You.

Book Discussionby Peggy Malsom

Do you live next door to a grumpy old man? Do you suspect there is a heart of gold under the grouchy exterior? Join us for the first book discussion of the season to discover the “feel-good story” that has taken the world by storm. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman explores the impact of one man’s life on his neighbors. Carl and Mary Scheie will lead the discussion. It is not necessary to have read the book to attend. Circle November 8 on your calendar and get ready to fall in love with a crusty curmudgeon. Just to be clear, Ove is the curmudgeon, not Carl. MBV Book Discussion meets the second Wednesday of every month November-April in the Mesquite Room at 1 o’clock.
