No way can WITW be celebrating it's 35th anniversary! It seems just yesterday I was chasing down any lady rider I happened to see just so I could tell her all about WITW. Yep, I actually did that and did that more than once. It seems just yesterday that I was hand writing letters to women who wrote to me asking about WITW and how to start a new chapter. It seems like just yesterday I was meeting for the first time many of the members who have been my true friends for 20, 25, and even 35 years! Friends I know I will have for life.

While WITW has been like a second job to me over the years I have always understood that the time and work was so well worth it. Because of WITW I have visited dozens of states to meet hundreds of members. I have sat and talked with a shaman in Oregon, danced in a powwow in South Dakota, had a private tour of the Woodstock grounds in NY, walked the rows of grave sites in Arlington cemetery, and attended our banquet dressed as a witch! I was lucky enough to watch the sunset in Key West, lead the Women's Ride at the Harley 100th anniversary in Milwaukee, chased alligators in Florida, and ride a Brahma bull in Golden, Colorado. All because of WITW. I know that many best friends have been made between members who would have never met if not for WITW. I know that because of WITW babies have been created and unfortunately even a life has been lost. But I know that WITW is part of motorcycle history and I am the one who has gained the most because of our members.

I do often get asked the same questions when interviewed by newspapers and magazines. "To what do you attribute the success of WITW "? My answer is always: the diversity and loyalty of the members. Yes, timing was important because in 1979 women riders really didn't have any one clear path to meet others and there was no Internet but it was the new chapters and members that took the ideas of WITW and ran with them. I am proud of the connections that have been made and love hearing stories from members. Just this past week I was told by one of our East coast members that she was at a Doobie Brothers concert and sitting near the front when one of the band members between songs stopped and pointed at her logo shirt and said, "Women in the Wind, I know you!" Yep, he sure does! It was Pat Simmons and his wife Cris started the second chapter of WITW in the early 80's and is now an Honorary member. My grandson sat at my kitchen table a few years ago and screamed at me that he just googled me and told me I am famous! WITW will always be part of women's history and our members have been pioneers.

I don't know what the next 35 years will bring or even if there will be another 35 years but I do know that I am proud of what we have already accomplished! I would like to see the organization handled with a softer scepter though so we can stick to the purpose of having fun riding and making friends.

Editor’s Notes Like everyone else, I had a fantastic time

at the WITW Summer Internationals in

Toledo Ohio! I was IN OHIO, IN TOLEDO!

LOL I am a nut for sure.

But I tell ya—I’m a nut for WITW. Kudos

and thanks of course go out to the WITW

Toledo Chapter and our Founders Cup

Challenge organizers—my hat is off to

you!

One of the benefits of WITW is sharing all

of life’s experiences with each other. My

favorite part of being the Editor is that I

get to see first ALL the stories—and the

happy HAPPY smiles each chapter sends

in. On Sunday, August 10, 2014 I had the

honor to witness the marriage of Mike

and Betty! What a great way to wrap up a

great weekend, Congratulations Mike &

Betty! Happy Trails to YOU!

NEWS FROM NORTHERN ILLIONOIS

The Swap meet turned out to ba a lot smaller than had been expected-but we had a very good turnout for our meeting.

The “Dates” in the 1985 summer calendar were basically voted on during our last two meetings…

We wrote to a couple different areas in Indiana and in Michigan looking for our overnighter with the Toledo chapter. The

areas are near lakes and look to be about an equal distance between us and Toledo…

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for a place to camp send them a short note asking about their facilities, local

attractions, etc...Also ask if an Adult group of about 15 or 20 motorcyclists could camp there. (We’ll fool them and call

ourselves Adults!!)

*******************************************************************************************************

We are hoping all of you will take an interest in The Newsletter by contributing anything that you think everyone would find

interesting.

If anyone else has an interesting trip or even bike event that they went on I’m sure everyone would enjoy hearing about

it...embarrassing moments are always Good ones too!!!

NEWS FROM TOLEDO CHAPTER

NATIONAL ATTENTION

Easyriders readers keep your eyes open. In one of the next couple of issues the club is running an ad directed to lady bikers

across the country and around the world. Hopefully the response will be interesting. We’ll let o know what happens...Speaking

of such things, Cris of Chicago W.I.T.W. sent our joint club card to Biker Lifestyle magazine and they printed it. So far, both

clubs have received numerous letters from prisoners across the country. If you’re daring enough to begin a pen pal relationship

with any of these guys, let us know and we’ll pass these letters on to you.

RIVER RUN

Believe it or not, this spring will be the 7th annual “River run” for the Toledo chapter. The date will depend on the Ohio

weather. Hopefully this year we won’t have to postpone it once or twice because of rain. That did happen last year and because

of the confusion so many girls had made other plans for that Sunday. We only had four women show, but we did have a good

time anyway. As tradition has it, we rode to Grand Rapids, O and stopped at La roes restaurant.

NEW CHAPTER??

This note may be premature, but the girls from Rockford Illinois who meet and ride with the Chicago chapter are thinking of

starting a third W.I.T.W. club, Chapter…..

See Page 24—Does Rockford start their own Chapter?

I just returned home to California from the 35th anniversary celebration in Toledo. From start to finish – what a great international meeting! It was evident that a lot of planning

went into making the event a special one that will not soon be forgotten by those of us who attended. On the subject of planning international meetings, I would like to let you know that we are in the process of creating guidelines for hosting these events which includes many suggestions and tips we’ve learned from chapters who have hosted these meetings in the past. The information posted on the WITW website is a basic summary of information. The guidelines however will be quite comprehensive and will be available to chapters who volunteer to host a meeting in the future. I know the thought of hosting a meeting might seem a bit scary and daunting but even smaller chapters can host these meetings with the right planning.

If your chapter would like to host a future international meeting (or co-host with another chapter) it must be pre-sented at the General Membership Meeting the year before you want to host it. After the presentations, it is voted on by all members in attendance. So you actually need to start discussing it with your chapter well before the meeting to see if there is interest and start getting the information for

your presentation. There are various ways to make your presentation, from merely having someone stand up and pitch it, to a slide show with narration, or offering a video with narration and music. Be as creative as you would like but please keep it within a reasonable time and not too lengthy. However you present it, you need to give the date (if it’s been determined), where it will be hosted, and the theme (if you have one – which is absolutely an option). Just make it as fun and informative as you can. Toledo had a very unique way of beginning their presentation in D.C. which was their chapter marching in with Dorothy leading and chanting like the witch’s guards in the Wizard of Oz “To-led-o, O-hi-o - To-led-o, O-hi-o. ”

Two presentations were made in Toledo to host the Sum-mer International 2015 – the Long Island Chapter and Ed-monton, Canada Chapter. Long Island won the vote so we’ll be heading to the East Coast next summer. We have over 100 WITW chapters who could host a meeting. Please give some thought to hosting a future international meeting. We would love to come to your neck of the woods. If you have any questions about hosting a meeting, please ask.

Oh, my, Auntie Em. Some of the things I saw in the land of Oz were very, very strange. One of the strangest things I saw was in my mirror. No further com-ment. What a memorable trip to Tole-do and to the land of the home of Women In the Wind. I felt very moved thinking about the beginnings of this group that has directly impacted my life in very positive ways.

My road riding buddy, Pam Rakes, Bay Area Chapter, and I had an adventure that included some back roads, several U-turns and a side trip to awe inspiring Ruby Falls, in Chattanooga, KY. Little did Pam know that I am always up for a visit to a cave, and Ruby Falls is in an underground cave.

Some of the other strange things I saw

in Toledo included some logo items. These particular logo items were not familar to me. in fact, if I had to guess I would say they were "bootlegged" logo items. Had to put on my Logo Po-lice Hat and get my Logo Police Baton out and beat some people. Well, not really, but I do have to live up to my image.

I want to remind everyone of one sim-ple thing and there will be no more beatings:

IF IT HAS WOMEN IN THE WIND ON IT

IT HAS TO BE APPROVED.

The approval process is very simple and painless. Download the Logo Ap-proval Form from the web site, and email or send it to me. I will see if it meets our requirements and send it to the board for final approval. Simple. Everything needs approval; even if you are not selling an item.

I would like to close with this one sim-ple thing:

IF IT HAS WOMEN IN THE WIND ON IT

IT HAS TO BE APPROVED

35 years. What an accomplishment for our organization. I

can only imagine what it feels like for some of our WITW members who have belonged to WITW 20, 25, 30 and now 35 years.

To have seen the struggles and been a part of the solutions as WITW blossomed from its infant stage to its adulthood, growing wiser and

more confident with each new year. Our beginning "Timeline" is now on our WITW Website in the MEMBER'S ONLY section.

As more and more of our history is captured and put in print, the "Timeline" will reveal the "Threads" that have "Woven" us into the "Fabric" you see before you. It is humbling to know that we each make up the "Threads" that give beauty to the Tapestry we call Women in the Wind. The work of our History Committee will allow us to discover in a moment’s time what

would have taken years to obtain on one’s own. I am excited to be a part of our 35 Year celebration and say "Thank you, Becky Brown, for making it all possible".

Participation for 2014 increased over last year. Thank you all for your efforts! Special recognition goes out to the WITW Georgia Peaches Chapter. They reached out to their local community at a 2 1/2 day - Thunder in the Parkway - music festival & motorcycle event. Besides setting up a booth and talking about Women in the Wind and Safe Riding, they greeted bikers, worked with Security for safe traffic flow, and handed out wallet sized Emergency ID cards and hand signal cards. Their efforts reached approximately 6,000 motorcycle enthusiasts, not only promoting Safety and earning the respect of the local biker community, but ensuring the safety of the participants as well.

I hope this article finds everyone enjoy-ing riding season. For those who are traveling Toledo I hope you had a safe and enjoyable trip.

According to the Chicago Tribune Illi-nois is adding a third class size of li-censing to their motorcycle endorse-ment. Currently Illinois has two size classifications for motorcycles; cycles with an engine displacement of 150 cubic centimeters and the second en-compasses all the rest. The third size classification would be for bigger bikes possibly starting at 600 cubic centime-ters. Drivers would have to test on the size of bike they intend to ride.

After graduating from Illinois' motorcy-cle safety class, instructors say, some students rush out and buy a monster racing bike that can go 140 mph — and they can't handle it.

"Motorcycles keep getting bigger," said Scott Mochinski, a safety class adminis-trator. "They're higher-risk, much heavier, and more powerful. If you've never ridden and you're bringing in a big heavy motorcycle, it's very diffi-

cult."

Yet to get a motorcycle classification on a driver's license in Illinois, students don't have to use one of the bigger bikes to take the driving test. They can test on a smaller motorcycle, then go out and ride whatever they want. This is also the practice in many other states.

Illinois officials are looking to other states for guidance. Utah, for instance, divides motorcyclists into four classes, depending on the size the driver tests on. Those who test on a larger bike may ride any size.

"It's in the talking stage," secretary of state spokesman David Druker said. "It's something we're reviewing seri-ously."

A small sampling of students at a re-

cent motorcycle safety class at Harper College in Palatine found opinions de-cidedly against the separate license classification.

Safety advocates blame not only big-ger, faster bikes, including "super sport" bikes popular with younger rid-ers, but an increase in middle-aged drivers returning to bikes after years away or trying them for the first time. The age group with the most motorcy-cle-related deaths in Illinois in 2012, the most recent year reported by the state, was 50 to 54; it had 23 deaths.

"We call them returning riders," said Terry Redman, a state motorcycle safe-ty instructor who counts himself as one of the group, having taken years off from riding to get married and raise a child. "They go out and buy the biggest bike they can get their hands on. The bikes weigh a lot more, their strength isn't there, and we hate to admit it, but our reflexes are slower. Unfortunately, it's a fast-growing fatality group.

Ladies please tell me your opinion on the proposal of different class sizes to obtain a motorcycle license, good, bad or indifferent.

I thought this month I would talk about

bumping up the power on your bike. There are some different things that you can do.

The easiest is changing the exhaust. All bikes (as with all vehicles) have to pass EPA emissions coming out of the facto-ry. To do this the exhaust system is "clogged" up with filters (packing) in the exhaust pipes. So by changing out the pipes that don't have as much packing or none at all it "opens up" the flow out of the cylinders. When

you open up the flow through the pipes it will need to "breath" more air and you need to change out the stock air filter to a high-flow filter. Since most bikes are fuel injected which is run by the computer you need to have it reprogrammed to change the air/fuel mixture. If your bike is carbureted then changing the jets takes care if the air/fuel mixture.

The next is bumping up the cubic inch-es (CI's) or cubic centimeters (CC's) of your engine. Cubic inches or centime-ters is how much space your engine displaces. So if you take a tub of water filled to the top, put in an unassem-bled engine in it, then measure all of the water that spills over, that's the

amount of the displacement. The more displacement the more power. So if you had a Harley with an 88 CI engine you can put bigger cylinders and pistons on your bike and bump it up to a 95CI. What happens is you have a larger area for the fuel/air mix and when that larger amount of fuel ignites it created a bigger explosion and more power pushing the piston back down and that equals more pow-er. Depending on how much bigger you want to go you would have to change out the heads also. The me-chanic or parts person (if you are do-ing the work yourself) can advise you to what all you will need.

4 Season Sistas East, TN

I have heard it said ones "sense of smell" has the longest memory of all our senses. This may true but with each mile I ride I find myself having "Memory Flashbacks". My husband and I left the morning of July 26th for a trip that would get us to Sturgis for the annual rally. We spent the first night (633 miles) at my mom's in Ft. Smith, AR. Pulling into her driveway, my thoughts were filled with those of my Ironbutt ride (2009) with WITW Sisters, Ginna Harrison, Ang Smith, Debi Harmon, and Bambie Williams. I also thought about my lunch stop there with Pearl, as we rode back from WITW Winter Interna-tionals (2014) and had snow on the ground. We journeyed the next day, to Santa Fe, NM (740 miles) driving past one of the towns where Sandy Burnham and I spent the night on our way to Reno, NV. We would ride the Million Dollar Highway, San Juan Loop in Ouray, CO and through the Great Rocky Mountain National Park over the next few days . Going through Keystone I thought back to my first major cross country trip to the AMA International Women and Motorcycling Conference. Ginna, Ang, and Debi would once again be my "ride buddies" and I would meet Jody Peterson and Jasmine Bluecreek for the first time. Finally arriving at Sturgis, we would spend the next 5 nights before heading toward Toledo. At some point in the journey, my husband and I will part ways as he heads back to

East Tennessee and I ride on to Toledo. In all I will have cov-ered about 5,000 miles. Ang Smith will be meeting me in Tole-do and we will ride back to our homes together. I have discov-ered no matter which direction I head or what ride I ride, I en-counter something that brings thoughts of one of my WITW sisters to mind. I hold these "Memory Flashbacks" near and dear to my heart. They have helped to mold and fashion me as a rider. Each adventure adds yet another page to a seemingly endless journey filled with friendships and bonds matched by no other. Each "Memory Flashback" would bring a smile to my face as I took in a deep breath and thought the only things I could really "smell" was that of the open road.

Associate Deborah Halstead-“Gypsy”

The invitation went out on Facebook, from the WITW Diamond Roses Chapter, to all chapters in the North East. Let’s meet in Hershey PA for lunch on June 1st

to celebrate International Women in the Wind Ride Day (IWITWRD)! As an Associ-ate Member, there are a few dates that I plan to ride in support of larger events. International Female Ride Day (IFRD), The River Run (held on IWITWRD), and International Ride to Work Day. Socializ-ing with other Women in the Wind is why I joined the organization and I wel-come the opportunity to meet up.

After a few tentative attempts to co-ordinate meeting points on Facebook, the day began as a solo journey, 200 miles each direction. While picking up a NPS passport stamp at the Visitor Center in Dingmans Falls (PA) the opportunity to encourage a female ranger with the de-sire to ride arose. To boost her confi-dence I described the first few exercises of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic Rider Course and suggested she begin there. Her excitement was uplift-ing!

Snydersville called upon personal memo-

ries to stop and purchase a poker chip from Pocono Mtn. H-D as I checked my directions and location. I came upon a pair of riders a bit further on, just follow-ing a gas stop. Getting closer, I saw the familiar Women in the Wind back patch! Presuming they were headed to Hershey as well, I tagged along behind them. Without a back patch there was no way for me to let them know I was also a member until they pulled over for gas.

They were of the NJ Renegades Chapter. Already at the fuel stop were the ladies of Silver Hawks Chapter. The seven of us decided to all ride in together. In my mind, this is how it is “supposed” to be, smaller groups banding together to form larger groups as the destination becomes closer. Realizing we rode the same route from Dingmans Falls on, the Silver Hawks Chapter invited me to join them for the rest of the day. They are a FUN group of ladies! I am looking forward to Summer Internationals in Toledo. More on that later.

Cactus Cuties Kingman AZ

Hello from the WITW Cactus Cuties Chapter in Kingman, AZ. Being a fairly new chapter we have been trying to do things that will be a tradition. Activities include: New Year Day’s Ride, Bug Run, Fun Run, Hwy Clean-up, Visit Retirement Home, Conga for the Cause, Yuma Prison Run, Laughlin River Run, International Female Ride Day. So much to do I know I am leaving something out.

One big thing happening for me is tomorrow; Priscilla and I will be rid-ing to Las Vegas, NV to meet up with some WITW Sin Sity Sister Chapter members to ride 2000 miles to Tole-do, Ohio. My feelings are nervous excited, but mostly emotional.

To think I’ll be going where it all started puts a lump in my throat.

Central Ohio diamond Girls Columbus, OH We have been a bit busy here in Central Ohio, riding between the rain storms. Taking a page from the WITW Diamond Roses Chapter book (from the last STB), we seem to have a lot of Plan B’s. The most recent was the Ohio Chap-ter ride to Waldo on July 19th, for famous fried bologna sandwiches and to meet up with the other chapters in the Buck-eye state. It was, of course, raining here in Columbus so instead of riding, five of us drove up in my car, a 2-door Toyota Solara. The girls in the back said it was a little tight; photo shows Tailwind (Mary S.) in the front, with Hammer (Debbie N.), Traf (Randy) and Putter (Juanita) squished in the back. It was so much fun we did it again on the way home! Traf’s take: “Loved how Tilt doubled as the driver and the DJ.” We were all singing,

fun time. It was nice seeing some of the ladies from Ohio. Another Plan B…at our usual meeting place, Rule 3, in June, we walked out ready to leave and saw a giant bus with the words “The Mobile Observatory” on it. We chatted with Ben and Kat about what it’s all about.

Check out the website: observatorypro-ject.com, it’s pretty cool. The Suspi-cious0bservers YouTube channel was created by Ben in 2011 to explore and share the sciences of the Sun, space

weather and its electromagnetic effects on our planet in a short, condensed daily summary, seeking subtle truths in a world where frankly, we should be suspi-cious of everything. The Mobile Observa-tory Project is a mission to enhance the news capabilities by retrofitting an RV and travelling across the U.S. and Cana-da on tour, meeting with supporters, conducting research with contacts, sight-seeing with his family, all while continu-ing to release the news every day. Look for them in your area. We had a great meeting in July, getting things on the calendar and, of course, planning the next place to meet, greet and EAT!! Several members rode to the Sixth Annual Run to Ohio Memorials, Wall and Rally on July 26th. Always a special ride. We are ready for Nationals and looking forward to the L-O-N-G ride to north Ohio, LOL, we are just going to “follow the yellow brick road” to Tole-do. Be safe, ladies.

Hi ladies! Meet Diane Casper. I’ve been very fortunate and have had many great adventures and trips on my bike. One of my most memorable trips was with my boyfriend and my Mom (at the time al-most 78 years young). My Mom joined me on the back of my bike.

We were traveling from Denver, CO to Cody, WY first. We were meeting a group in Cody, so she would have a choice to catch a ride (in a vehicle) back to Denver with people instead of continuing on a bike trip. We left Denver one evening and rode for a couple of hours into WY. We stopped at Casper, WY the next day for lunch. Our last name is Casper, so it was great when we took a picture under a ‘Casper’s Restaurant’ sign (she used the photo for her Christmas card that year).

We rode through Yellowstone a couple of times including having to wait until a large herd of buffalo decided they were done with the road. After being charged by a buffalo a different year she was definitely nervous while we were waiting for an opportunity to get past them.

As other people were getting ready to head back to Denver, she decided to con-

Dragon Gypsies East TN How could I forget? It was 5 years ago when I, a Physical Therapist, first met my patient at Home Health. I was walking with her in her yard as part of her treat-ment. Her garage was open and there I saw a very shiny motorcycle. She walked with me into her garage and showed me her bike. She told me, "Hop on it, Girl." Her husband, Keith, got the key and cranked it. I heard the sound: VRRRRM!! VRRRRM!!! I felt the vibration. I was so excited then, but, at the same time, I was so nervous. My heart was beating so fast as I remembered all my patients in the trauma hospital prior to their surgery who had motorcycle accidents. And I had told myself before that I would nev-er ride a motorcycle. But things changed after that day. I kept hearing that sound and feeling that vibration. And now, I

really feel so great. Thanks so much, Bonnie Pitchford. It made me feel and realize one of the things that I never thought I would do, and it opened my world to be one of those Women in the Wind.

And YES!!! I can feel the good wind all over me each time I ride my bike. It's been five years now, and I would like to take this chance to thank all the people who gave me support and confidence to ride my bike. I am glad I am with the Women In The Wind; first, with the WITW Steel Magnolias Chapter and now with the WITW DRAGON GYPSIES Chap-ter. Special thanks to Donna McKale who served as my mentor and who guided me in all of the first times through the riding experiences I needed to do. She helped me with the first time on the highway, on the interstate, and on curvy roads, and she taught me how to be a responsible safe rider.

WITW Dragon Gypsies Chapter: My sin-cerest appreciation to everyone, that regardless of my race and sexual orienta-tion, you have accepted me and treat me as one of you. You serve as my family here in the US. Thanks, Sisters. I am always looking forward to each time we ride and go places. I feel safe riding with the group of the Gypsies (Ginna, Jenifer, Connie, Debi, Bonnie, Michelle, Jerry,

tinue on the trip with us. We continued our trip into Montana. The Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park is so beautiful and amazing with a lot of the different scenery and water. If you are ever close to Glacier, I highly recommend you include it on your itinerary.

We rode into Idaho, what I refer to as the back side of the Teton’s. Again, the scenery is just incredible. We stayed in a small town and were all served a very large baked potato with dinner. We rode through Utah, down to Mesa Verde Na-tional Park in Southwest Colorado. We have some marvelous parks in the West-ern United States, including this one. Touring on a motorcycle through this park (like the others) is fascinating.

We rode the final part of our journey on Interstate 70, through the mountains, back into Denver. This Interstate is defi-nitely one to ride…it’s wonderful with curbs and remarkable scenery. My Mom loved being able to smell and see so much being on the bike. She really en-joyed the journey, as did I having her with me on the back of my bike!

Desert Curves Reno Nv

The Desert Curve Chapter rode to Cedarville CA in June. The route went from dry desert sage to a lush farmland as we

neared Cedarville. There are numerous natural hot springs in the area. The Surprise Valley Spa where we stayed provides a natural hot spring pool to each room, the water is loaded with rejuvenating minerals. There is a fishing pond and the poles, bait and boat are provided to the guests.

Officers from our chapter will be attending the Summer Inter-nationals in Toledo next week. They will be presenting infor-mation on the Winter Internationals we are hosting in January –hope you are planning to sail the high seas with us.

2015 is the 150th birthday for Nevada, the Desert Curves are participating in the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City sched-uled for Nov 1. This will be an opportunity to celebrate our statehood and the many open roads we have for exploration. By sharing our visibility we can promote the safety and fun of women and motorcycles in Nevada –The Real Wild West.

Edmonton Edmonton, Canada I was meeting some of the girls in Inver-mire, B.C. to ride out to Horse Thief Hideout Rally for July 01 weekend bash. I rode the first 500 kms alone so rather than riding into Lake Louise to use the loo I pulled into the next roadside stop for a piss. It's gonna be a quick stop. I threw my bike on 'er kickstand about 25 feet away, and made a mad dash to-wards that shed.

When the performance was completed, I took a few minutes to re-adjust the lay-ers of clothing I had so hastily ripped off during my “gotta pee, gotta pee” dash to the loo! I opened the outhouse door and started my exit from the odor filled shack. Then suddenly, I stopped in my tracks. This grizzly greeted me on the other side of the very thin outhouse door that stood between me and my

bike. Damn, I made eye contact with this amazing gigantic intimidating beast. Sure makes my Road King look like a match-box toy, he looks big enough to have his own postal code!

My first thought was to step back in the loo and slam the door, then I thought, "that's not gonna help". Thru a crack I saw he was moving towards the road giving me a chance to get out, so I ran, jumped on my bike, and started it. I grabbed my phone and took a few pho-tos, I knew I'd want some proof this real-ly happened. So now, I'm getting brave and want to get some action shots. So I'd put 'er in gear and ride towards him so he would start to run. Then I got to thinking how I'm riding a motorcycle around a wee parking lot with my iPh-one in hand & eyes on the screen, chas-ing a grizzly bear. My next thought, "This is not the message that the safety advi-sor should be passing onto her fellow sisters!"

Just the size of these animals demands them respect. They are such a wonderful example of the beauty nature has to offer. I am fortunate to have had this experience today but I'm most fortunate that this grizzly wasn't needing a snack or had a thorn in his paw!

In 10 days we head for Prince George for our annual Canadian Rally hosted by the ever hilarious WITW Saddle Bags Chap-ter. See ya there. Safe miles! Cheers, Jane

Georgia Peaches Marietta, GA

So far the summer in Georgia is mild and providing great riding opportunities for the Georgia Peaches. The summer began with a ride to Little River and Desoto Falls in Alabama on June 14. Then on July 12 we visited the Georgia Guidestones, often referred to as America’s Stone-henge, a monument standing almost 20 feet high consisting of six granite slabs. The face of each stone is inscribed with 10 principles in eight modern lan-guages, the last of which states “be not a cancer on the earth – leave room for nature – leave room for nature.” Even

though it was a hot day, we welcomed five new riders, celebrated the birthday of our chapter’s treasurer and enjoyed many laughs. Lastly, on July 26 we mean-dered through the Chattahoochee Na-tional Forest up to Lake Chatuga and officially welcomed our newest member Eileen!

June was SAFETY month and the Georgia Peaches showed up in style. We were granted the opportunity to volunteer and set up a non-profit booth at the 1st Annual Thunder on the Parkway, a 2 ½ day motorcycle and music festival at Lake Lanier Islands. As a part of pro-moting safety we handed out emergency

and Francina). Even though we are all different, we estab-lished a good camaraderie: riding as a group, watching out for each other, "Bling bling" activities, plus the eating sessions, of course.

Thank you, Ginna, for accommodating the gypsies for a safety meeting and bike detailing last June 21 with grilled beef burg-ers and hotdogs and more. I had a great time detailing my

bike with the group and learning some safety tips. One that I will always remember is, "If you lead, don't spit." LOL (Courtesy of Jerry). It shows that we are working out togeth-er to be responsible, educated riders…that we just don't ride… "WE RIDE SAFE!"

Highway Hunnies Buena Vista, SK Canada

WOW! Has it been a busy time for the WITW Highway Hunnies Chapter! We celebrated International Ride day in style by meeting up with the WITW Bridge City Thunder Chapter and heading to Temple Gardens Mineral Spa in Moose Jaw for the night. It was a fantastic time meeting and visiting with all the ladies. In June for WITW Safety month we had some activities planned. We met as a group (WITW Highway Hunnies’s Chap-ter, Spouses and potential members’) with the Safety council

for an update class on riding in a group. We also arranged to have a retired motorcycle mechanic put on a maintenance class for us, I learned so much! I also posted on our WITW HH Facebook group a ‘safety tip’ every day, then held 2 pop quiz-zes for the ladies and gave donated safety related prizes to the ladies who had the most answers correct, the ladies seemed to enjoy the competition and the prizes. We also raised over $2,500 with a cookie sale for one of our potential members who was unfortunately hit on her bike by a gentleman who was having a heart attack while driving and crossed over into her lane. Although she suffered some major injuries, she is in great spirits but will be doing some physiotherapy for some time to come. This lady has truly been an inspiration to us all!

The picture is of WITW Highway Hunnies Chapter with our total on cards, from our cookie sale. We also have been lucky enough to have eight new members join us this month as full patch WITW Highway Hunnies Chapter members; they all bring a great attitude and passion for riding, and I am looking forward to getting to know these ladies better in the future! Welcome new members! Our rides have been greatly attended by all the women and each ride seems to bring out someone new to meet. In September we will have a BBQ (and sleep over) at Shelly-Anne’s house with all our members, potential members and spouses. Looking forward to hanging out with them all! Stay safe out there and have FUN!

Cara Vindevoghel, Vice President

Hudson Valley Hoydens Mt. Vernon, NY Becoming official in Feb 2014, we were very excited to finally get our unique back patches and be able to get out and represent WITW.

Our chapter is very community orientat-ed. We donated money and prepared and served bag lunches for 20+ people supporting a Living Well Program for Survivors of Domestic Violence. It was great to see the smiling faces and the appreciation from everyone for the lunches; PBJ, carrot & celery sticks, clem-

entines, raisins, drinks and dessert. Even the horses were happy when the kids realized they loved the carrots.

We have attended many local biker com-munity/charity events, including the WITW Black Rose/Freebirds Chapters' event and a benefit for 'Biker Billy', where we gladly sold the 50/50 tickets for them, raising over $500.

We have also chosen a Women's Domes-tic Abuse Shelter for our yearly/anniversary ‘Chapter Tradition’, to give to women that are in need and less for-tunate then we are. Our 1st luncheon visit has been scheduled and we have started collecting their requested items and hopefully we'll make a difference in their lives.

The summer continues with the upcoming National Confer-ence in Ohio and/or trips to Sturgis for many of us. We wish those making the journey safe passage and clear skies!

Ironhorse Roses Lakeland, fl

The last weekend of May and first of June we had the opportunity to attend sister's weekend. In Florida this means WITW sisters from all over the State gather for fellowship and put on some miles. Since I have been part of WITW one chapter has hosted this event. WITW Space Coast Riders once again set up accommodations for us, this year in historical St. Augustine, our Nation’s oldest city. Two of our Southern sisters met up with WITW Ironhorse Roses Chapter early Saturday morning. We rode the roughly 154 miles, traveling back roads and spotting for fuel and lunch. It was great getting to know both Dee Dee and Kathy during our ride and spending time together during the week-end.

Chapters were represented for sister’s weekend. Many of us partied into the night and we when awoke for an early

KSU for breakfast, it was overcast and lightly misting. We rode our bikes as a group to the Oasis and one of the local entertainers from the night before was persuaded to join us in the morning. After breakfast we enjoyed his personal performance for the WITW sisters as we sat on our bikes in the parking lot. We

took a scenic ride overlooking the Atlan-tic Ocean for several miles before turn-ing inland for the trek home. We dodged some storms, rode through several

showers, and hovered under several gas stations pump areas. We got soaked de-spite rain gear. Once the rain passed we got dry just in time for another soaking. Great ride though without incident. We also met new friends, got to see old friends and recruited a new member, Ms. Rita to WITW Ironhorse Roses Chap-ter! We look forward to sister weekends and Chapter Challenges, two events that Florida WITW sister’s get together for networking and fellowship.

In July, we met and watched “Riding Like a Pro”. Our chapter will be promoting safety and improving riding skills. Alt-hough June is Safety Awareness month, I do not get on my motorcycle without acknowledging the risk that faces me each time I ride. Safety is ongoing. After watching and debriefing on the video we headed out for lunch and then Ice cream. A great day and way to spend time with my WITW sisters! Rubber Down. Jersey Girls Merchantile, NJ

When I read Lesley Harmon’s article about her first WITW Jersey Girl Chapter trip, I thought about my first WITW Jer-sey Girl Chapter trip to WV in 2008. My longest ride prior was 150 miles with a chase vehicle. I was excited and appre-hensive - first trip jitters.

Excerpt from Lesley’s article: “Ever been so excited to do something that on the day of the event you feel so nervous and sick to your stomach? That was me! I was so excited to go on the Jersey Girls trip to Lake George, but on the morning we were going to leave, I wanted to

back out. The thought of my first big trip, riding on the highway and riding that many miles in one day, my stomach was upside down. But I did it. I got on my bike and headed out to the meeting place. Fast forward to the end of day one - I rode on Rt. 73, the NJ Turnpike, Rt. 18, Rt. 287, the NY Thruway, and Rt. 87! My trip meter said 304 miles - WHAT! How did I do that? The Jersey Girls, that's how!”

At the end of the trip I had completed (Continued on page 18)

Our chapter also loves to RIDE! We rode to lunch on May 3rd for International Female Ride Day.

For June 1st WITW National Ride Day, Randi, Nancy & Phyllis did a girls over-night road trip. We rode 500+ miles, ex-plored new roads and new places. Loved meeting some new 'sister chapter' mem-bers when we met up with other WITW

Chapters for lunch in Hershey, PA. We had a blast, and Phyllis was our 1st recip-ient of our "Chapter Spoon". We also participated in WITW Safety Month, learning and reinforcing many safety issues. As a chapter, we take time to guide and help our new riders, so they feel safe and comfy on the road.

When riding is not possible, we still en-joy having fun. Bingo night with the NJ Renegades Chapter provided lots of good food, laughs, and prizes! With

Randi around there is always food. We have enjoyed a pool party, pizza, movies, girls sleepover (w/ s'mores and fresh sangria), a 4th of July celebration, and birthdays. Randi & Nancy went to winter nationals in Vegas and 4 of us are attending summer nationals in OHIO, including our new 'prospect' Kim.

Our first year has started off so well, we look forward to many safe miles and tons of fun together as we have lots more planned for the rest of 2014!

Ladies of Chrome Leather

Riverside CA

On June 1, 2014, International WITW Ride Day, the five Califor-nia chapters of Women in the Wind - Ladies of Chrome and Leather, Sol Sisters, Faultline Riders, Lady Hawks, and Steel N’ Hearts, met in Lompoc for “Ride California 2014.” We also had one rider join us from WITW Desert Curves Chapter in Reno, NV.

Most of us rode there on Friday so we could enjoy the amazing roads. On the way up, many of us from Southern California avoided the freeways and took some back roads, highway 33 being the favorite.

Since this was the first California event, we decided to keep it simple and give the ladies the opportunity to plan their own days, where they wanted to ride, where they wanted to eat, and who their riding buddies would be. WITW LOCAL Chapter officers and their assistants worked hard for this to be a suc-cessful event. They found a convenient hotel with stores and restaurants nearby, located some good lunch spots for our rides, and planned some great routes – all without doing any pre-rides. Escorted rides were offered along with route sugges-tions for ladies who wanted to plan their own rides. The 40 ladies did a lot of riding, north to Cambria, Hearst Castle, and Avila Beach, inland to Los Olivos and Solvang, and short trips to the coast. Jalama Beach was my favorite beach ride.

Both Friday and Saturday night the hotel offered snacks and drinks so that gave everyone a chance to catch up with old

friends, meet new ones, and talk about the rides they did. We also gathered at the pool and on Saturday, a group of ladies planned an impromptu potluck dinner with everyone sharing food and drinks.

On Sunday, June 1, we rode as a large group to the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum. I’ve never led a group that large but fortunately the route was pretty simple so I didn’t get us lost, except at the end when I rode right past the museum! The museum opened early just for us, gave us a discount, and even took some group photos for us. What a great way to spend International Women in the Wind Ride Day.

The weather was beautiful, the roads were twisty, the views were amazing, but the best part was the camaraderie among all our Women in the Wind sisters! Let’s do this again next year!

795 miles! My takeaways from the week-end: I found enjoyment in highway rid-ing. I need to relax and just feel my bike. I laughed so much I had a constant smile on my face! And most of all I learned I need to "Ride my own Ride"! I will con-quer the winding mountain roads one day! I cannot thank the WITW Jersey Girls Chapter enough for the weekend of sup-

port, laughs and empowerment! Sur-rounding yourself with strong, confident women can only make you stronger and found that to be true more than ever on this trip and I can't wait to go on my next adventure with the WITW Jersey Girls Chapter.”

Interestingly, my article had a similar name, From the Eyes of a Newbie. I also wrote that the trip was a huge accom-plishment for me and the best part was

spending the weekend with a lot of really super nice women who took me in and taught me everything from packing to riding.

Six years later, I led the trip to WV. Over-coming fears is the journey called life. The destination ends up being a place that you wanted to go and never thought you would make it.

Our June meeting at Karen’s home was exciting! Great turnout but our planned ride was cancelled due to rain, hail and sever-al tornadoes hovering around us. We were all gathering around the TV to find a calm exit opportunity. Thank good-ness, all the gals made it home - wet, but safe. The planned lake ride has been rescheduled for mid-July with a refreshing stop at the ice cream shop. Welcome Summertime!

An Advanced Safety rider training with Officer Felix Claudio's Ride-Like- a-Pro class was held June 22nd. This is an excellent slow maneuver motorcycle training. In the words of one of our newest members and first-time class attendee, Pam (Pandora) Vail, "I really enjoyed the Ride like a Pro class with all our WITW gals. We really looked cool all lined up with our bikes after the class didn't we?! I will definitely take this class again when it is offered because I need all the practice I can get. I think it's very important to continue learning and practicing riding skills. I think it is especially beneficial to practice with those you normally ride with. Based on the skills we all learn

together it will help us ride better as a group. Being a relatively new rider, I really appreciate knowing what the riders sur-rounding me in the group are going to do (giving good hand signals and having common sense) and I look to the Road Cap-tain to set the pace and formation for a safe and enjoyable ride. My husband Dan and I went out and bought some small cones at Walmart so that we could set up our own practice course in a parking lot. Now we just need to find a good place and time to practice. Little does she know, Jody P. already has a plan and place, just for that purpose. Good Luck to the RMC group riding to Toledo next month. I wish we all could go.

Northern Women Tangent OR

The weather is nice and most everyone is out riding and touring. According to Facebook there are several gals out tour-ing and having a good time. Just want to wish all these gals safe travels. Soon our

Summer Inter-nationals will be taking place and lots of fun to be had by every-

one. Looks like no one from our Chapter will be attending. Not too much happen-ing in the Chapter as far as events or

rides. If you happen to be traveling in Oregon, drop our Chapter an email and maybe we can connect and show you around the area. The picture of the Three Sister Mountains, North, South, and Middle Sister are located in the Cas-cade Range of Hwy 20 going to Sisters and Bend, Oregon.

free Shutterfly account and then login with her email address and password.

Shutterfly also offers an excellent forum area for online discussions. However, our chapter has not felt the need to use this feature yet. We have pages for how to do things within the site such as uploading photos, a page for files we want to keep handy (such as custom made trauma packs and information about DROPBOX. com). We also have a page for keeping our trip ideas/suggestions for some Sat-urday rides. Another handy feature of a Shutterfly group site is Shutterfly's email notifications. For example, when one of our members uploads photos of a ride or adds an item to the calendar, everyone in the group will automatically receive an

email notifying them of the additions. Each member can set how often she will receive email notices, i.e., daily (day of), once a week summary list, monthly sum-mary, or never. The major advantage of a group Shutterfly site is that all group members can contribute content to the site.

Shutterfly is fairly easy to learn how to use and to set up a group site. It is based on templates that can be customized. f a chapter is interested in setting up a group Shutterfly site and would like some help or have some questions, WITW members are welcome to contact me. Sol Sisters San Diego, CA

On July 6, 2014 we lost one of our own. Marijke de Vries lost her long time battle with cancer. Marijke “Mo” was born in Haarlem, The Netherlands on February 16, 1968. Marijke’s first sport was gymnastics, which she started at six years old. She also sang in the children’s choir. Marijke later joined a show band and played Alto horn. As part of the band’s travels, Ma-rijke first visited the United States when she was 12 years old. She spoke of that visit and how she knew, from the moment she walked on American soil that she was destined to live in the US.

As a child, Marijke struggled with her immense size. She was larger than even Dutch standards and found it challenging to maneuver in her “oversized” body.

Other sports Marijke participated in were cycling and volley-ball. After playing volleyball for just a short while, Marijke soon realized that basketball was her true sport. Through play-ing basketball, Marijke came to see that her great size gave her an edge up in the game and she began to welcome and embrace her size as a blessing. Marijke’s basketball skills brought her an overwhelming number of invitations to play at colleges all across the US. Marijke decided on San Diego State University.

In 1991, Marijke started playing with State at the National Level, which she told her family she was very proud of. Ma-rijke thoroughly enjoyed her time studying at and playing bas-ketball for State and graduated with a degree in Physical Edu-cation in 1994. From 1994-1999 Marijke worked as a San Diego School Bus Driver. In 1999, Marijke moved to Seattle where

she started working for King County as an MTS bus driver. Ma-rijke’s size was again used to her advantage as a bus driver because few people wanted to mess with her. All she had to do was stand up and the trouble would cease!

Marijke’s love of motorcycling brought her into our doors. Our lives have never been the same since. She touched the lives of every single one of us in one way or another. If there is any-thing you take from Marijke’s life please take this - give love freely to others. Express it. Live it. Be it. And never be afraid to get lost, because, as Marijke said, “Three Lefts make a Right.”

Here’s to you Marijke - GO BIG OR GO HOME!

Sin Sity Sisters Las Vegas, NV

As I set here writing this article I am re-minded there are only 2 more days left before leaving for Toledo. Everyone here in Vegas, Kingman and Havasua are packed and ready except for me; I al-ways wait until 2 days prior to pack. It must be the military in me, for sure I never over pack. Of course, the bike has been ready for weeks.

Where has the year gone, August al-ready. It just seems like yesterday WITW SinSitySisters was hosting the Winter Internationals and here we are getting ready to leave for Summer Internation-als. Since the Internationals our chapter

has been on our ladies only weekend to Williams Az., we have had our pool par-ty, worked the Las Vegas dog show, attended the Marine riders Toys for Tots kick-off party, and numerous early morn-ing rides; due to the heat. At our July meeting we finished planning out the rest of 2014 and we wonder why life is flying by.

Several of our ladies have taken road trips this year to visit family and enjoy the highways, taking us along with them thru their photos on our Facebook page. As in all families we have shared our joys and our sorrows, we have welcomed new members and had heavy hearts for those who have moved away. Moving away = road trip!

Las Vegas is growing again. Several casi-

nos have been remodeled and renamed, new housing developments are being built, several large shopping centers that where only skeletons are being finished and two water parks have opened. As well as several new stadiums are being built. There is never a dull moment in Vegas.

Our chapter has taken to heart our new motto and patch NO DRAMA! Life is just too short and we decided that the BS is not needed!

In closing, I want to thank every lady in my chapter for enriching my life with your friendship and know that I cherish it because it is yours to give and yours to take away.

Steel Magnolias Ten Mile TN

Unfortunately, this message is neither ride nor event filled with news from our WITW Steel Magnolias Chapter, but it is truly positive and from my heart.

My husband, best friend and riding part-ner of 30 years, JOHNNY SIMPSON passed away on July 25th after a 4 year fight with lung cancer. He continued to come to Internationals and ride as long as he could.

He was always supportive of my WITW adventures, truly believed in the organi-zation, and encouraged me to partici-pate, even we he knew he could only support me from a distance. All who knew him will agree he was a very spe-cial friend and he will be missed and was loved as much as he loved ONE and ALL!

Steel Magnolias attended June "Safety"

meeting through invitation from WITW Dragon Gypsies Chapter who have re-mained close friends and "ALWAYS SIS-TERS". I was able to attend on my bike because a sisters' husband offered to take him to the party on his trike. It was Johnny's final ride and a gesture and event that will never be forgotten.

WITW Steel Magnolias Chapter July meeting was also unforgettable in that the chapter brought box dinners to my home and visited with him and shared

TRUE FRIENDSHIP and LOVE in his final days.

I have always cherished my WITW ties and have been a member for 12 years. I hope I can ride "in the wind" until I my-self cease to exist. I want more than any-thing to continue "my ride" in his memory! With the support of my sisters and good health from GOD I know I can.! I'm a better person and rider because of WITW.

WITW ROCKS, they will be there for me and be my "saving grace" in his absence.

Thank you to all who have brought me this far and for being there for me.

GOODBYE JOHNNY we know you are pain free and at peace in God's hands.

WITW Steel Magnolias Chapter has sev-eral upcoming rides scheduled into the fall and a couple of ladies interested in becoming new members. TENNESSEE ROCKS! WITW FOREVER!

Southern Comfort Calhoun, GA

WITW Southern Comfort Chapter is off to a great start. As the founder of the WITW GA Peaches Chapter, I was able to skip through the learning curve for the newest GA chapter. Having the honor during the escort ride into Ellijay, GA with the Vietnam Veteran's Traveling Wall along many other loyal Americans who ride, was bitter sweet to say the

least. I took several photos so it was very difficult to decide which one(s) to choose. SCC has been asked to assist in spreading the word for the Miracle League Poker Run that will provide much needed financial assistance for physically challenged kids. Keep your eyes open for the gals riding by flashing the biggest smiles and hearts, yep that would by WITW Southern Comfort Chapter ladies! Thanks all for your support during the transition. See you in August, There's No Place Like Home! Should be a blast.

Happy summer and welcome to the rid-ing season! The SunShine Sisters Chapter has been getting the miles under the tires in anticipation of Nationals in Tole-do! We've been riding in the sun and rain; getting lots of both as it is rainy hurricane season and the hot dog days of summer.

The Everglades City Ride brought us through the unspoiled wilds of the Flori-da Everglades on some wonderful empty back roads. A lunch stop on the tip of the island had the freshest seafood around and even wild dogs, who tried to attack

our fearless road captain's bike, couldn't slow us down.

We had a Summer Celebration Ride to ring in the first day of the season with a northern ride that took us through "The Grade" which is a 15 mile stretch of nat-ural and wild old Florida with a locally famous tree canopy that stretches over the road with 100 year old trees and old growth native plants and scrubs.

The SunShine Sisters helped contribute to our favorite charity, The Loggerhead

Our oldest Canadian Chap-ter is the Edmonton Chapter and I be-lieve they are now 28 years young. I could be wrong, but I’m sure I’m aw-fully close.

I know that everyone who could make it to the 35th party had a good time. How could they not? And all I can add to that is “Congrats to Becky” for putting up with all of us for the last 35 years.

Meanwhile, up here in Canada we were all having a party of our own. The 1st Annual Canadian Rally was held

in Prince George, BC and what a great area for riding in that turned out to be. We were treated to a Blues Band on the Thursday night that really “rocked” the small bar of the Wells, BC hotel. Friday morning was spent touring the old gold mining town of Barkerville, complete with actors in period cos-tumes playing out various roles of peo-ple from the early 1800. Friday after-noon we rode to Prince George and then got ready for Kareoke sing-a-long in the hotel. That’s where everyone presents sings the songs regardless of who picked. What a hoot.

Saturday was the poker run, odometer poker, bug splat contest, and other interesting and fun activities. Saturday night was the much anticipated theme

banquet. The costumes were once again halarious and inventive. There were several “gold panners” there that I swear were guys. But since it’s a women only banquet I’m sure I was mistaken.

Myra Abstreiter was presented with her 25 year pin and everyone present congratulated her for all her efforts over the years in promoting WITW and women bikers in general. We are very proud of you Myra.

I can hardly wait for the 2nd Annual Canadian Rally to be held in Pincher Creek, AB, August 13 – 15, 2015. Hope to see a lot of you there. Oh and don’t worry about the weather, I’m sure it will be perfect riding temperatures.

If you go really big you will also need to split the cases and replace the crank. What that does is lengthen the stroke (up and down motion) of the pistons, giving you even more space for your fuel/air mix. So again, more fuel the bigger the explosion and more power.

Then there is changing the cam. You can do this by itself or do it when you pump up the cubic inches. The cam runs the valves. When you change the cam it

will keep the intake valves open longer to get a little more fuel mix in and it leaves the exhaust valves open longer to better get rid of the spent fuel so when the intake valves open back up you get the optimum about of fresh fuel mixture.

One tip on changing cams on a Harley, from the factory they are chain driven with tensioners on the chains, and the tensioners wear out and need to be replaced sometimes as soon as 50,000 miles. So if you are going to be keeping

the bike for a long time and/or putting miles on it you can put in gear driven cams which eliminate the tensioners. Gear driven cams are twice as expen-sive as chain driven but save you much more money in the long run. The one thing I love about changing cams on a Harley is that it changes the way the bike idles and it brings back the OLD Harley sound of a slow lope.

So I hope this helps those of you that want to beef up the power on your bike. Happy and safe riding.

Marine Life Center, with donations while watching a miracle of nature. A mother loggerhead sea turtle nested, dug a body pit, and laid eggs on the local beach and we were lucky enough to witness the miraculous strength and determination of the endangered sea creature.

We made multiple trips to Key Biscayne to see the lighthouse and the ocean. The World Cup Soccer and ice cream stops

made the final trip memorable. The origi-nal destination had a do-over day due to mechanical problems, but sisters stick together and since we are all adaptable, the ride plans are always subject to change.

The St. Augustine Ride brought lots of laughs and good times to the weekend trip. The Sunshine Sisters met with 4 oth-er Florida Chapters to spend time in the oldest US city of St. Augustine. There was tons of sightseeing of the city's monu-ments, forts, statues, and landmarks of

by day, while ghost tours and grave sites took over the nights. Local food is always spectacular and long trips are good for fitting in seeing long lost friends. The weekend was wonderful get away and thankfully the only bad weather was on the way home.

The SunShine Sisters are looking forward to seeing everyone in Toledo! Enjoy the summer and safe travels to all the ladies out there!

Smiles thru the miles! Jen -aka- Lil' Bit

On Saturday, August 23, 2014 Mariann White, (WITW Milwaukee Area chapter) Barb Behm and Pauline Forrest (WITW Wisconsin Northern Lights chapter) placed a commemorative stone at the Wisconsin Motorcycle Memorial just north of Sturgeon Bay in Door County Wisconsin.

The WITW chapters teamed up with the British Biker Cooperative (BBC) to place three commemorative stones

at the memorial. One stone for the BBC, one for a member, Al Gaertig, and one for WITW.

A brief presentation was made with the reading of the 11 BBC members that have passed. Fortunately, there

have not been any Wisconsin WITW members that have passed. After a touching poem that Marian read, Pauline referred to Mariann’s jacket with several RIP patches and we remembered other fellow motorcycle’s that have passed. The WITW stone read “Women in the Wind, Wisconsin, RIP Sisters”.

The Wisconsin Motorcycle Memorial is sponsored by the Door Devils, M.C. and supported by its friends. For more information check out:

WELL HERE WE ARE

We’re finally back for the second issue of the W.I.T.W. newsletter. It took us a lot longer than we had planned, but those

things have to be expected in this kind of beautiful weather. Who wants to sit in the house and write about riding when they can

be outside doing just htat?

We have had a few changes since the last issue. The biggest one is that we added three new chapters. The Rockford girls

finally decided to make it official. After the national run to Bunker Hill, Indiana, they have asked to become chapter #4—Peru

Indiana. Then just recently, Cindi Silva, from the Washington D.C. area, joined as #5. I met (by mail) both Sharon Lennon of

Bunker Hill, Ind and Cindi of D.C. after the club ad in Easyrider Magazine. We enjoyed meeting Sharon in July and look forward

to meeting Cindi next summer at our third annual national campout. From the enthusiasm in her letters, she already has her bike

packed for the ride west to meet us.

[EXCERPT]

8/13/85—Hello Women in the Wind:

When I answered Becky’s ad in Easyriders a few months ago, I didn’t know for sure what to expect. Since then, she & I have

been corresponding regularly. It interests me to know what other women riders are doing in other areas of the country.

Another event I attended happened outside of Boston, Mass. last Sunday. The 1985 2nd annual Lioness run—women riders

only! 63 ladies on everything from a Norton to Viragos to HD’s to Moto Guzzies. Can you picture 63 women riding together?

When we passed through several small towns, people really freaked out. When they realized we were all women, they went

absolutely wild! Erin Bliss

How to nominate a Sister for our 2014 Sister of the Year Award!

First choose who you are nominating and why. Your chapter sets the criteria as to why you think your nominated sister deserves to receive such an award.

In 300 words or less, explain why your chapter is nominating this Sister for our 2014 award.

In addition to those 300 words, tell us some facts about her:

How long she has been riding a motorcycle

What type of motorcycle does she ride

Does she have a family

How long has she been a member of your chapter and WITW

Include any other facts about her that you think would be interesting for us to know

Additional Info:

All names and stories will be read by all 10 International Officers, whom together will vote for which sister will receive this award.

An “Atta Girl award will be given to our second place winner.

Special recognition will be given to ALL nominee’s at the Winter Internationals Awards Banquet and online.

All awards will be awarded at the Winter International Banquet.

We encourage you to send your nominations at any time during the year. Remember, because Women in the Wind has almost 100 chapters, each chapter can only nominate 1 sister. Once a nomination has been made, it cannot be changed. If a chapter sends a second nomination, it will be disregarded.

We look forward to reading about our Special Sisters!

All nominees receive a certificate and a “Special Sister” Patch. 1st and 2nd place also receive a plaque along with 1 year free membership to WITW. 1st place also receives a free registration to the next Summer Internationals.

Award will be given at Winter Internationals 2015!

Please email your nomination to the WITW International President at

[email protected]

Ahoy All You Landlubbers!!

Let’s get the party started on the very first Women in the Wind Winter International Cruise!

Since we are traveling from the Reno area, we need a little help from all the chapters. We will be filling boxes and suitcases with tee shirts, decorations, and goodie bags. We love a little competition, so we are asking each chapter to put together a “Treasure Chest” to be raffled off at our banquet. The Treasure Chest that has the most raffle tickets will earn a prize for that chapter, so bring or send your Treasure Chest to Ft Lauderdale.

The cruise sets sail from Ft Lauderdale on January 22, 2015 for 4 days of fabulous activities with our WITW sisters. When you arrive in Ft Lauderdale, whether it be by motorcycle, car, plane, train or pirate ship, we hope that you will take a few hours or days to enjoy the scenic Ft Lauderdale area. Rent a bike and explore the cost or ride down the Keys. Just make sure you make it back to the Port in time to sail away!

Once you get on board and settled in, come down to the Chapel for registration. Pick up your gift bag, itinerary and get ready to rock the boat!

After dinner we will meet at 7:30 – 9:00 pm in the Skywalker’s lounge for a hosted cocktail and canapé welcome aboard party. This party is for WITW and their guests only! After dinner, enjoy entertainment and dancing to your heart’s content in one of the Caribbean Princesses many lounges. Party all night.

Friday is your day to take the party in the many activities on board. Swim, games, bingo, mini golf, movies under the stars, walk the plank, I mean deck, to work up an appetite for all the food that is waiting.

Saturday we arrive at Princess Cay. Snorkeling, banana boat, so many water activities await you. Then back on board for dinner, dancing, first class shows, movies, gaming and whatever your heart desires!

Sunday is our general meeting. Don’t forget to send in your picture of your motorcycle so that you can participate in our Show and Shine on the High Seas. At 7:30 pm join us in the Skywalker’s Lounge for our Tropical Paradise Awards Cocktail party. With lots of Tropical drinks and fabulous tropical canapés as we dance the evening away. Don’t forget you best pirate gear as there will be prizes, or booty as the pirates call it!

Monday we bid farewell to our “High Seas Adventure”! We will have many memories as we “sail away” to the 4 corners of the globe until we meet again.

As WITW Founder, Becky Brown, stood with torch in hand, clad in a white “toga”, the sound of kazoos and bucket drums could be heard doing their best rendition of the Olympic Theme Song. Then the music stopped and Becky declared the Founder’s Cup Challenge “Open”.

There was nine WITW Chapters vying for the honors of being the Challenge Winner. Hudson Valley Hoydens, Akron, L.O.C.A.L., Long Island, Dragon Gypsies, 4~Season Sistas, Sol Sisters, Milwaukee Area, and Wisconsin Northern Lights.

The FIVE Challenges

1. Where the Rubber Meets the Road. A motorcycle tire was “tossed” in the manner of a shot put with the distances measured for placement for points.

2. Hillbilly Golf. This was seemingly the hardest challenge and also the funniest. A golf ball was dropped down one leg of a pair of panty hose and the other leg was tied around the waist of the two players. The object was then to knock a loose golf ball across a distance of about 15 feet at which time your teammate would knock it back to the starting point. What made this challenge harder and funnier was you weren’t allowed to use your hands.

3. Batman. This was a relay where each team member ran from the start line to the line where a bat was lying on the ground. You then picked the bat up, placed your forehead on the handle end and ran around it 10 times. Then, you had to run, crawl, or stumble your way back to the start line where your teammate would then do the same thing.

4. Heads Up. This was a motorcycle helmet launch where 2 people would hold 2 exercise bands with a cargo net attached. Each competing chapter would then have a member place the helmet in the cargo net, pull back on the “catapult” and let the helmet fly. Distance measurements determined points awarded.

5. Trust your Co-Pilot. The “pilot” or driver would be blindfolded. The “co-pilot” would then sit in a wheelbarrow and direct the pilot around orange cones and through a finish line.

Points were awarded, for each challenge, as follows: 1st= 10 pts, 2nd= 8 pts., 3rd= 6 pts., 4th= 4 pts., 5th= 2 pts., all others= 1 pt. for completing the challenge. Any team who RSVP’d before midnight on August 7th would receive a “bonus” point.

When the last challenge was over, all measurements taken, and all items used for the “Challenge” were returned to the storage area, WITW members went on their way to get ready for the WITW banquet.

The WITW Founder’s Cup Challenge Committee, Nancy Ihasz, Cat Grabowski, and Donna McKale announced the “Challenge” winners at the WITW banquet. With 31 points, WITW Sol Sisters Chapter was declared the “winner”. They took home the “Founder’s Cup” trophy, $100 Dollars, have their name placed on the WITW Founder’s Cup Challenge Banner, and have bragging rights until the next “challenge”. With 30 points, WITW 4~Season Sistas Chapter received $50. With 27 points, WITW Milwaukee Area Chapter took home $25. The other teams were as follows: WITW Dragon Gypsies–24 points, WITW Long Island Chapter and WITW Wisconsin Northern Lights Chapter–23 points, WITW L.O.C.A.L.–8 points, WITW Akron Chapter–5 points and WITW Hudson Valley Hoydens–2 points.

A BIG THANK YOU to the members of the WITW Toledo Chapter who “gathered” all the items needed for the challenge.
