Benjamin Yudin, Rabbi Andrew Markowitz, Associate Rabbi Shomrei Torah Parshat Devarim—Shabbat Hazon 9 Av, 5778 / July 21, 2018 HAKARAT HaTOV Baalei Kriah Upstairs - Gideon Bannett Baal Kriah Downstairs - Ari Mayefsky PACHIM KETANIM FROM RABBI YUDIN: In Honor of Parshat Devarim and Another Sad Tisha BAv The primary role of the Beis Hamikdash was to unify the Jewish people. Like Rashi says at the beginning of Korach (16:6), we have one Temple, one Kohen Gadol and one Ark. As a result of our being unified- just as He performed miraculous occurrences daily in the Beis HaMikdash (Avos (5:7),) so too, He performed mira- cles for the nation and each individual. Even if they were not worthy themselves, by virtue of being part of the tzibbur - community- they warranted and received Divine providence. When this achdus - feelings of oneness, love and responsibility for the next one dissipated, we were no longer worthy of His Divine protec- tion. Its interesting that in the Haftorah for this Shabbos, the Prophet Isaiah (1:13) says, No more meal offerings and incense. Why does he single out these two karbanos; why not Chatas or Shelamim? The Meshech Chochma says its because these two are only brought either by an individual, or as a community as one unit. The breakdown of brotherhood caused both each individual korban and the collective Ketores korban, to be invalid. When we sit low this Tisha BAv let us focus on so much that could and should unite us, and not G-d forbid the opposite. Wishing everyone a meaningful Tisha BAv. NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS

This week we celebrated our favorite holidays all in one week! The younger children celebrated Rosh Hashanah with apples, honey and pomegranates. They made beautiful apple cut-out designs with red paint and paper. The older bunk did a science experiment, putting apples in different types of liquids to see what would happen. Instead of sitting in the sukkah, the children actually made edible sukkot out of chocolate graham crackers and green frosting for the schach. Boy were they yummy! They also built sukkot using popsicle sticks. We all enjoyed a fun Simchat Torah parade with flags that we made and lots of dancing. Purim in July is always a summer highlight and the chil-dren had a blast designing and wearing their own crazy animal hats and masks. We had a special Shabbat ice cream party with whipped cream and chocolate syrup in honor of Shavuot. Rabbi Markowitz joined us for a Shab-bat party and Morah Kaila came to do Yoga and Movement. We also en-joyed a lot of outdoor playground time and relay races and obstacle courses during sports with Michael. Shabbat Shalom!

Tisha B'Av at Daughters of Miriam Fasting on is only one of the ways we observe Tisha B'Av!! At Daughters of Miriam, many of the men are not allowed to fast for medical reasons. If there are not enough men who can fast, Rabbi Mirsky will not be able to take out the Torah. To help out, let's make a minyan there, so that they will be able to hear the Torah reading and Kinot. As in prior years, Shacharis is at 8:45 AM and mincha, in memory of Moishe Hochman, is at 1:45 pm. Please contact Sam Heller at [email protected] or Rabbi Mirsky at [email protected] to let us know if you can attend!
