It’s a Friday afternoon at 1:30 pm, and I’ve just finished my last class of the day at the Jerusalem Campus of the Hebrew Union College. I know that I only have a few hours to get all the food I’ll need for the weekend, to pay my phone and electric bill at the post office, and hopefully to get that haircut that I’ve been putting off. The crazy part about Friday afternoon in Jerusalem is that everyone is trying to get the same things done that I am. They know that just about every single store and business in the city is going to close an hour before sundown at the latest, and most will close earlier, as they too have to get ready. And while some stores and restaurants will open late Saturday night, at least an hour after sunset, most businesses won’t be open again until Sunday morning. Whether or not you are Jewish, and regardless of your observance, everyone in Jerusalem is forced to get ready for Shabbat. At first I liked the novelty, then it got annoying, but ultimately, I truly appreciated that regardless of my schedule, and regardless of what was going on in my life, Shabbat would come every week, and I had to get ready for it. For many, getting ready for Shabbat becomes as filled with ritual as Shabbat itself. Not only does it make the transition into Shabbat that much more special, but the preparation itself can be a beautiful time when shared with friends and family or providing much needed alone time. While the preparation for Shabbat often feels mainly practical, we have another opportunity for preparation when it

comes to the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Sure, the stores and business will still close if you’re in Jerusalem, but wherever you may be living, our tradition gives us an entire month to get ready. For this preparation, however, rather than focusing on groceries and errands, we are supposed to focus on ourselves. The Hebrew month of Elul, which begins this year on September 4, is one of only two months in the Hebrew calendar without a holiday. Why? With no other holidays we can focus on

getting ourselves ready. The Maharal of Prague, the great 18th century rabbi said to have created the Golem, taught, “[during] the month of Elul, before eating and sleeping, a person should look into his soul and search his deeds, that he may make confession.” Traditionally the shofar is blown in the weekday morning service for the entire month and special prayers are added, all making sure that these most important of days can’t just sneak up on us. So, as a new school year begins and everyone’s minds are occupied with “getting ready” for all the different elements of our lives, try

to take a little bit of time to get yourself ready for the upcoming Days of Awe. Take the time now to think about the year that has past, the person you have been, and the person you hope to be. As much potential as the High Holy Days have for providing meaning in our lives, there can also be beauty in the preparation, and taking the time now might just make your Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur mean that much more.

Each month a member of our clergy/staff will recommend a movie or television series that is easily watchable on Netflix, Amazon, cable on demand, or from your local Blockbuster (or wherever you rent your VHS cassettes). Our hope is that on those evenings when you don’t know what to watch, this might inspire you to watch what we’re watching, and hopefully to join us in meaningful conversation. Each month we will start a conversation on our Facebook page so we,

as a Shir Ami community, can discuss the month’s selection.

This month, I’m suggesting an oldie but a goodie. Defending

Your Life is a 1991 romantic comedy starring Albert Brooks, Meryl Streep, and Rip Torn. This movie, while

portraying a light-hearted, yet thought provoking image of the afterlife, spends significant time focusing on the

role of fear in keeping us from our full potential. As we get ready for the High Holy Days, think about what it

means to be judged - in this world? Beyond? How do our own fears prevent us from doing what we should to

help ourselves and others? For Daniel, it is love that finally helps him overcome his greatest fears. What would it

take for us to overcome ours? Don’t be afraid - join the conversation on our Facebook page today!

A FEW WORDS FROM CANTOR ELSON

The Many Ways We Make Our MusicOur wonderful Adult Choir will be getting back together in September to begin rehearsing music for the High Holy Days. New choir singers are always welcome. If you are interested in joining the choir, to sing for the Holy Days or to start after

Simchat Torah, please contact Cantor Elson.

The choir will participate in services approximately once per month. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings during the year, but due to the limited time in which to prepare for the High Holy Days, rehearsals in September will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the Abraham-Swerdlow Sanctuary:

If you play a woodwind or brass instrument, violin, viola, cello or accordion, you would enjoy playing with us. Rehearsals are usually on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM, this year our first meeting is September 6. SHIR KLEZ! Plays once per month at a Shabbat

evening service. It’s fun, our players are great folks who enjoy making music with each other, and we play music to accompany the Shabbat service prayers, as well as Chassidic, Israeli, Yiddish, and, of course, Klezmer songs. If being part of our synagogue’s band interests you, email or call Cantor Elson [email protected] or 215-968-3400.

SHOFAR BLOWERS Our Ba’alei Tekiah always provide a high point in our High Holy Day services as they blast the stirring notes of the Shofar. If you are interested in learning how to blow the Shofar for the High Holy Days please contact Cantor Elson now so you can learn the proper sounds and start practicing. If you don’t own your own Shofar, you can borrow one from the Temple.

HIGH HOLY DAY TORAH READERS We are extremely proud of the large number of Shir Ami leaders and members, both adults and teens, who read from the Torah on the High Holy Days. If you are one of our Torah readers please note the dates and times when Cantor Elson will meet with you so that you will be able to practice your portion with the Torah from which you will be reading. As I say every summer, “Boy, did that go fast!” Camp was extremely successful with an overabundance of little ones. Our children had so much fun celebrating Outer Space Week, Under the Sea Week, Garden Week, Olympics Week, and so much more!! They did crafts, sang songs, swam in our pools, relaxed to some yoga, did cool science experiments and had FUN, FUN, FUN! Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.

We have been very busy preparing for a new school year. We can’t wait to greet our children with new curriculum, some new teachers, and new programs. The biggest excitement is our very new Infant Center!! I personally can’t wait to hug all the beautiful little babies!! As I prepare for the upcoming school year, our wonderful and dedicated teachers are already preparing for the arrival of the children. They are preparing their classrooms and completing the necessary trainings before school begins. We want everything to be just perfect. All children, regardless of abilities or background, deserve beautiful environments. If we want children to grow up to have an appreciation for

the arts and aesthetics, then we must live what we believe. Environments that lack beauty and comfort are stressful and tiring. A classroom environment should be enriched and equipped with materials from home, nature, and from the children and adults themselves. This is what we thrive for as your child enters his/her classroom; a purposeful, engaging, interesting and functional environment that blends and balances the best elements of home, school and community where all learners can thrive. There’s a lot of hustle and bustle in the hallways. This is a very exciting time of year!! – Shari

Upon entering a Jewish home, especially one in Israel, you are often greeted by your host with the words ‘Bruchim Habaim!’ While these words are a customary way of saying ‘welcome in,’ they actually mean a lot more. A literal translation of these words is ‘May you be blessed as you come in.’ So I extend a ‘bruchim habaim’ to our Shir Ami students and their families as we begin another amazing year of school!

Welcome to a year of learning more about yourself and the world in which you live.

Welcome to a year of deepening your connection to Jewish traditions, rituals and values.

Welcome to a year filled with hands-on experiences that will allow you touch, see, hear, feel and taste all that is special about Judaism and living a Jewish life.

Welcome to a year where the land and people of Israel are brought closer to your heart and where, if you are in 8th or 9th grade, you have the chance to (literally) touch Israel’s soil with your feet.

Welcome to a year where asking a question is not only encouraged, but is a reminder that we are Yisrael, forever wrestling with God as we search for the answers to life’s most challenging questions.

Welcome to a year where you will go out into the community, engage in tikkun olam, and make the world a better place for those who are in need.

Welcome to the next year in our wonderful history — as a school, synagogue and Jewish people.

‘Bruchim Habaim’ from my family to yours. May this school year, and 5777, be one of health, happiness, and self-discovery.

Wow! I can’t believe summer came and went so quickly. As we all gear up to get the school year started once again, now is a great time to remind everyone that the Shir Ami Youth Group program is an excellent way to fill your weekends with fun! From unqiue social events, community

projects and amazing leaderhip-building activities, SHAFTY offers something for just about every age! Here’s a look at each of our programs:

Sr. Shafty (9th-12th) One of the largest and most exciting youth groups in NFTY/PAR (North American Federation of Temple Youth in the PA Region). Shafty offers social events, fundraising, community service, weekend retreats, leadership opportunities as well as friendships that can last a lifetime. We have an exciting year ahead with activities such as a white water rafting, mid-night bowling/shul-in, Speed Raceway and so much more!

Jr. Shafty (7th and 8th grade)

We offer great fun and socialization coupled by some fundraising, social action, leadership and a Jr Youth Kallah weekend retreat (JYK) in December at Camp Harlam. Some of our upcoming activities are a late night hayride, Ultrazone, Comedy Sportz, and a limo ride for our backward progressive dinner. Come have fun with Shir Ami’s Jr. Shafty youth group.

Bonim (5th-6th grade) and Chalutzim (3rd-4th grade)

Here we build upon social experiences outside of the classroom. Our younger groups have a chance to attend an exciting event every month. Some upcoming events this year include: apple picking, SkyZone, Hanukkah Hop, Snow Tubing cooking and many others. It’s a lot of fun and a good habit to get into!

LEARN WITH SHIR AMI • 5777 / 2016-2017

“KEEPERS” will be recognized in upcoming issues of Shiron for their participation and generosity

THIS YEAR’S THEME: THE AMERICAN JEWISH ExPERIENCE

The first Jewish community was established in what is now the United States in 1654 when 23 Dutch Jews, recently expelled from Brazil where they had settled two decades earlier, arrived in New Amsterdam. Now, over 360 years later, over 5 million Jews call America home, often struggling with a balance between the values of our ancient Jewish tradition with those of a modern America. Over the course of this year, we will be looking at the Jewish experience in America from a historical, textual, and cultural perspective with classes taught by our Shir Ami clergy and special guests. Look for a full Lifelong Learning schedule during the upcoming High Holy Days.

The Lowdown on the High Holy DaysSeptember 22 at 7:30pm andSeptember 27 at 11:00am Join Rabbi Simon for this special session as we get ready for the High Holy Days. We will learn the historical background/evolution of our High Holy Days and their traditions in addition to exploring some of the core prayers, hopefully adding both knowledge and meaning to your High Holy Day observance.

Remember, as with many of our Lifelong Learning classes, the same class will be taught both Thursday evening and Tuesday afternoon as an attempt to make classes available and accessible to all of our congregants.

Keepers of Jewish Excellence

Shir Ami is pleased to present our ongoing Keepers of Jewish Excellence program, allowing all members the opportunity to study throughout the year. Please consider becoming a “Keeper” here at Shir Ami. Your donation in turn supports all of the important mitzvot of learning and prayer that we share, and what’s more, allows us to continue our Lifelong Learning commitments.

SHIRON | SEPTEMBER 2016

Please join us for great Broadway shows and camaraderie. Open to all Shir Ami members, and invite your families and friends to join us!

Our Shir Ami Theatre Club will have a busy season as many new shows and expected revivals are opening on Broadway for 2016-2017! Our first show is “Front Page” on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 3 PM at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York. The orchestra seats are $99 each (regularly at the box office $ 157 as of this writing). The revival stars Nathan Lane, John Goodman, Holland Taylor, Jefferson Mays, John Slattery, Dylan Baker – to name a few! I do not have many left! There are many other shows that I want to book for us that do not have their box offices open yet...mostly, for the Spring. So, keep in touch and let me know your suggestions! Contact me at [email protected] or call me at 215-860-6868 (after 10:30 am, please). Our Theatre Club is open to all Shir Ami members and their friends and families. Come enjoy some great theater with us!

Fondly, AndeeAndrea Losben, Shir Ami Theatre Club Chair

On the anniversaries of remembering, a Jew remembers not only by feeling, but by doing. Kindling a yahrzeit candle the evening before is one thing we do; the Kaddish spoken at a gathering of our people is another. All names will be read on the Friday evening before the yahrzeit. You are encouraged to honor your loved one with a living memorial with a contribution to one of our special Temple funds.

YAHRzEIT LIGHT CEREMONIALThe family gathers at dusk, before the evening meal, on the eve of the anniversary of the death of the departed. The head of the family speaks: At this moment which bears the memory of our beloved (name), let us join hands in a token of God’s grace. A link has been broken in the chain of affection which has long bound us together, yet the blessed bonds of home and love remain. With prayerful heart, we receive this divine gift of life which holds us together in family unison.

Eternal God, we thank You that, in this time of sadness and loss, You have helped to keep us strong. Though the pain of our loss is still present for us, we know that love will always be stronger than death. And so, to You, we lift our hearts, because we know that our loved one continues to be a living presence in our lives. We acknowledge your mercy, O God, who strengthens us with faith and peace. As our loved one lives for us in these words and memories, we kindle this yahrzeit light and sanctify it in the remembrance of the Divine Word: The spirit of humanity is the light of the Lord. (Kindle the Memorial Light.) ZECHER TZADIK LIV-RACHA. May the memory of the righteous be an eternal blessing.
