SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS LUTHERAN CHURCH

8AM & 10:30AM Sunday

Should you receive Holy Communion today? Holy Communion is the real and saving Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, mysteriously made present in ordinary bread and wine, according to the promise Christ made at His Last Supper. Through this wondrous gift, we believe that Christ extends to us the fullness of salvation, the forgiveness of our sins, a strengthening of our faith and protection from the assaults of the devil. Ultimately, we hope that everyone will come to believe and trust in these promises as we do here at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran. However, if you do not yet believe in these mysteries, are unwilling to ask God’s forgiveness for personal sins or have not yet been baptized, which ALWAYS precedes one’s participation in Holy Communion, it is best to simply wait. SPECIAL NOTE: For those who wish to abstain from alcohol, please find dealcoholized wine in the center of the communion tray- it is pinkish in color. Also, if you prefer a gluten-free communion host, please make sure the pastor knows. When you come to the altar rail, fold your arms over your chest so the pastor knows to give you a gluten free host.

June 28, 2020

As we prepare to worship today, we ask that each one be respectful of others as they pray silently and meditate on the great gifts God has

both given and promised to all His faithful children.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

(It is our custom here at Shepherd of the Hills to remain seated for the first part of the opening hymn and then stand for the final verse).

SERVICE OF THE WORD OPENING HYMN: “God of the Prophets, Bless the Prophets' Sons”

INVOCATION In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (Pause for silent reflection.) Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Almighty God, in His mercy, has sent His Son to die for you, and for His sake, forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE

COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you! And also with you. Let us pray. Merciful and eternal God, Your holy apostles Peter and Paul received grace and strength to lay down their lives for the sake of Your Son. Strengthen us by Your Holy Spirit that we may confess Your truth and at all times be ready to lay down our lives for Him who laid down His life for us, even Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. READINGS FROM SACRED SCRIPTURE Acts 15:1–21 But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” 2And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders about this question. 3So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brothers. 4When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they declared all that God had done with them. 5But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.”

6The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter. 7And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, 9and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith. 10Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.”

12And all the assembly fell silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles. 13After they finished speaking, James replied, “Brothers, listen to me. 14Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them a people for his name. 15And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written,

16“‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will restore it, 17that the remnant of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord, who makes these things 18known from of old.’

19Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God, 20but should write to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood. 21For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him, for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues.”

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixteen chapter: Glory to You, O Lord!

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ!

SERMON RITE OF HOLY BAPTISM: Callie Elizabeth Dillon Dearly beloved, Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” In the last chapter of the Gospel According to Mark, our Lord promises, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” Callie Elizabeth Dillon, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your forehead and upon your heart to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified. Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, according to Your strict judgment You condemned the unbelieving world through the flood, yet according to Your great mercy You preserved believing Noah and his family, eight souls in all. You drowned hard-hearted Pharaoh and all his host in the Red Sea, yet led Your people Israel through the water on dry ground, foreshadowing this washing of Your Holy Baptism. Through the Baptism in the Jordan of Your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, You sanctified and instituted all waters to be a blessed flood and a lavish washing away of sin. We pray that You would behold this child to be baptized according to Your boundless mercy and bless her with true faith by the Holy Spirit, that through this saving flood all sin in her would be drowned and die. Grant that she be kept safe and secure in the holy ark of the Christian Church, being separated from the multitude of unbelievers and serving Your name at all times with a fervent spirit and a joyful hope, so that, with all believers in Your promise, she would be declared worthy of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

RENUNCIATION OF THE DEVIL Callie Elizabeth… Do you renounce the devil? Do you renounce all his works? Do you renounce all his ways?

PROFESSION OF FAITH Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth?

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried: He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty?

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?

Is it your desire to be baptized here today?

BAPTISM Callie Elizabeth… I BAPTIZE YOU IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

[Anointing, signifying the seal of the Holy Spirit] The almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit, and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with His grace to life everlasting.

[White Garment] This white garment is to show that you have been clothed with the robe of Christ’s righteousness that covers all your sin. So shall you stand without fear before the judgment seat of Christ to receive the inheritance prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

[Lighting of candle] Receive this burning light to show that you have received Christ, who is the Light of the world. Live always in the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for His coming, that you may greet Him with joy, and enter with Him into the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which shall have no end. In Holy Baptism, God the Father has made you a member of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir with us of all the treasures of heaven in the one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We receive you in Jesus’ name as our sister in Christ that together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. CONGREGATION: Amen. We welcome you in the holy name of Jesus our Lord. Let us pray. Almighty and most merciful God and Father, we thank and praise You that You graciously preserve and enlarge Your family, and have granted this child the new birth in Holy Baptism, and made her a member of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and heir of Your heavenly kingdom. We humbly implore You that, as she is now in Christ, You would keep her in her baptismal grace, that according to Your good pleasure she may faithfully grow to lead a godly life to the praise and honor of Your holy name, and finally, with all Your saints, obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Christ, our Lord. Amen. Now may the peace of God be with you: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Almighty and gracious God, You want all to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Magnify the power of the Gospel in the hearts of Your faithful people that Your Church may spread the good news of salvation. Protect, encourage, and bless all missionaries who proclaim the saving cross that Christ, being lifted up, may draw all people to Himself, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. SACRAMENT OF THE ALTAR The Lord be with you! And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God; for You have mightily governed and protected Your holy Church, in which the blessed apostles and evangelists proclaimed Your divine and saving Gospel. Therefore with patriarchs and prophets, apostles and evangelists, with Your servants Peter and Paul, and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE WORDS OF THE TESTAMENT Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: "Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me." In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

PAX DOMINI The peace of the Lord be with you always! Amen.
