THE SHELDON CONCERT HALLThe 2015-2016 season celebrated the best in jazz, folk, classical music and more with concerts featuring dynamic artists such as jazz pianists Danilo Pérez and Cyrus Chestnut, ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro, bluegrass artist Rhonda Vincent, soulful singer Ruthie Foster, the popular Kingston Trio, David Halen from the St. Louis Symphony, and rising opera star Julia Bullock. Top music talent such as Pink Martini, Imrat Khan, Alarm Will Sound and Gillian Welch attracted many new audiences to the perfect acoustics of the concert hall.

The Sheldon welcomed Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) with Wynton Marsalis for

a Friends of The Sheldon benefit that raised important dollars for Sheldon education programs. The Sheldon’s North County Big Band, a group of very talented high school jazz musicians from the St. Louis area led by Harvey Lockhart, opened for the JLCO, marking the first time a high school ensemble was allowed to open for the group. The Friends’ spring benefit in April featured blues legend Taj Mahal in a sold-out, joy-filled performance.

On a very special evening in July, The Sheldon hosted a benefit event for the family of Ray Kennedy, longtime member of the John Pizzarelli Trio, who passed away in May 2015 after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

The celebration of Kennedy’s life and music featured John and Bucky Pizzarelli and raised over $15,000 for the Kennedy family to help cover medical expenses.

The Sheldon continued its longtime partnerships with KDHX, co-presenting the three-day St. Louis Folk and Roots Festival with headliner Sam Bush, as well as The Sheldon Sessions series with artists such as The Lone Bellow, Jay Farrar, Dave Rawlings Machine and the Milk Carton Kids.

The incomparable Chita Rivera capped off another amazing season, wowing the Gala 2016 crowd with songs from Chicago, West Side Story and more, reprising the iconic roles she originated on Broadway!

THE SHELDON ART GALLERIESThe Sheldon Art Galleries presented a wide variety of world-class visual art during the 2015-16 season, with exhibits such as nationally-acclaimed artist Larry Krone’s The Best, Best Everything; a compelling exhibit of work by indigenous people from several continents called Our People, Our Land, Our Images; and a personal and in-depth look at one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian homes in SAMARA: A Mid-Century Dream Home.

The annual ArtSounds gallery gala celebrated “The In Crowd,” with a mod-themed party and a glorious concert by jazz legend Ramsey Lewis, whose live recording of The In Crowd celebrated 50 years in 2015.

Spring brought national attention to the gallery-wide exhibit Printmaking in St. Louis Now, showcasing the exciting work being done by print presses in St. Louis.

Additional exhibition highlights included Brian Hamill: Tests of Time, 70 photographs of many acclaimed celebrities of our time, including Woody Allen, Muhammad Ali and Barbra Streisand, and a memorial exhibit of work by late St. Louis photographer Bob Reuter featured in the Kranzberg Gallery.

The galleries presented education programs for students, teachers and the public, including a teachers’ workshop with Amanda Verbeck from Pele Prints, in conjunction with the Printmaking in St. Louis exhibit; a crowdfunding workshop with artist and author Susan Stang; a student photography workshop with Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie; and fall and spring Family Days presented in collaboration with the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and Pulitzer Arts Foundation.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMSSheldon Educational Programs served over 25,000 St. Louis area students during the 2015-16 season, with concerts introducing young people to jazz, folk, blues, classical, the American musical and world music.

The SOLID Project (Science of Learning Instrument Design), with leadership support from the Boeing Company, engaged hundreds of St. Louis area students in learning about the science of acoustics and music and using the STEAM disciplines of science, technology, engineering, arts and math to make their own instruments from everyday materials. Musical instruments created as part of this project were displayed in the Sheldon Art Galleries.

Thanks to a generous grant from PNC Arts Alive!, The Sheldon was able to add additional lessons to the Sheldon Music Online Academy, including teaching segments by Symphony principal clarinetist Scott Andrews, soprano Katherine Jolly, Symphony cellist Bjorn Ranheim, vocalist Lisa Campbell and drummer Steve Davis.

The Sheldon continued a 13-year partnership with the Cardinals Care Redbird Rookies program to introduce young people to blues and jazz and make connections to baseball. Music for Lifelong Achievement continued its annual Starbucks Instrument Drive, bringing in over 50 new and used musical instruments to donate to local schools and music groups.

FACILITY RENTALS AND EVENTSThe Sheldon Concert Hall, Art Galleries, Ballroom and Louis Spiering Room were abuzz with weddings and receptions, rental concerts

and community events. The Sheldon was pleased to host events such as Paraquad’s 45th Anniversary Celebration with Josh Blue; Black Violin; St. Louis Effort for AIDS’ 30th Anniversary Celebration; Jane Lynch; National Council Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse benefit with Michael McDonald; the Onyx Bridal Affair; Muny Magic at The Sheldon; Opera Theatre of St. Louis events with Grace Bumbry and Salman Rushdie; Chris Cornell; Gordon Lightfoot; Nine Network’s DonnyBASH; the KMOX Holiday Radio Show; and Focus St. Louis’ What’s Right with the Region.
