Result Types

SharePoint 2013 includes a new framework for presenting search results to end users called result types

Result types have several elements that enable each type to be rendered differently:

Display Templates

Display templates contain the following characteristics: They define the visual layout of a Result Type A template is really just HTML You can edit it with ANY HTML designer you want You add placeholders to your HTML file where managed properties

should be emitted A set of display templates is included OOB– /Master Pages/Display Templates/Search folder Site collection admins can upload new display templates.

Better Best Bets

Query Rules– Run on one or all Result Sources– Rules can be filter by User Segment– Rules are very flexible (Keywords, RegEx, etc.)Results– Promoted Results (like 2010 Best Bets)– Result Blocks (think of it as running another query)– Change result ranking by changing the queryQuery Rules can be GLOBAL!

A few final thoughts…

Challenge: Can users get what they need from the Search Results?Use Refiners……just say “No!” to the Advanced Search Page!Hate XSL and SPD? Upgrade to 2013 and use Notepad++Consider promoting your best content
