Improved Installation Experience New server role installation wizard makes deployment easier than

ever Single Server Install option is removed out-of-the-box, but is still

possible by installing as a "Special Role”; Full version of SQL Server is still required

New "MinRole" capability which helps to scale operations; Services are consolidated into 3 categories: 1) User Roles 2) Robot Service Roles 3) Cache Services Roles

MinRoles help to enforce tier-based best practices our of the box, and can be changed post-installation via configuration

Excel Services Excel Services is moving to the Office Online Server (OOS),

which is a rebranding of the Office Web Application Server product Use of Excel Services within SharePoint 2016 will require a licensed,

installed, and correctly configured OOS instance OOS (Formerly OWAS) will continue to provide browser-based versions

of Microsoft Office products and co-authoring support, much like those available in Office Online

The following features require OOS: Viewing and editing Excel workbooks in a browser (with or without the

Data Model) Excel Web Access web part for SharePoint ODC file support (no longer requires Data Connection Libraries) Programmability features such as JavaScript OM, User Defined Function

Assemblies, SOAP and REST protocol support

Additional Changes to Note Authentication Changes - SharePoint Windows identity over SAML claims is

now the default; Stayed tuned for more about some of the other SharePoint features that have had challenges with Claims based authentication in the past like InfoPath and some of the BI features

User Profile Sync has changed versus SharePoint 2013; The all familiar (Forefront Identity Manager) FIM client is no longer available and the default synchronization method is now Active Directory Import

InfoPath 2013 has not been updated, and installation of Office 2016 currently removes the desktop client version of InfoPath 2013; InfoPath forms continue to be supported via the web client

As of now there are no announced plans for a 2016 version of SharePoint Designer, though the 2013 version will continue to be supported for the time being

There is no direct upgrade path from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2016, SharePoint 2013 must be used a stepping stone
