Question Writing

In the First Reading box, write 3 questions. Aim for one of each of the types listed below:

Interpretive Questions: get at the text’s deeper meaning and themes. They have more than one good answer that can be supported by the text.• Ex: Why does Renate let Hanna try to cure her leg?

Speculative Questions: ask about information that exists outside the text, but readers must use their imagination.• Ex: Will Harrison’s parents ever think about their son

again?

Evaluative Questions: go beyond the text and call for the reader’s personal opinions.• Ex: Should the mother have tried harder to send the

narrator to the first school?

Discussion Questions/ Second Reading

• Share your prepared questions in groups of 4.• Write the top 2 questions from each group on the

favorite questions.• During the second reading, pay attention to the

questions and make notations in the text where you see possible answers.
