GREETINGS
G reetings,
Dear Parents, Caregiver and Families
I would like to congratulate the students who graduated this year. We had a great ceremony for
the Torres Strait Passage of Rites where we had guests from Brisbane and the Uniting Church.
We were also privileged to have a member of the Cowboys NRL team speak to the school about
motivation and success.
It was wonderful to see so many families at the year 12 graduation formal.
Families travelled from Queensland, the Torres Strait and Northern Territory to support and
celebrate the success of these young men and young women. It was very pleasing to have just
received notice from the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority that nine of the
graduates have gained a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). All students received a
Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification. The percentage of students who received
some form of qualification was 95%.
This is a credit to the hard work of the students, teachers and other staff in the school.
Congratulations also to the families who gave students support during their education journey at
the secondary school.
Be proud of our young men and young women we have here at Shalom and very proud of their
achievements.
Blessings,
Chris England
Principal
Remembering the fallen heroes... Remembrance Day is a very important day on the calendar of the Australian people.
A minute's silence was observed at 11:11am, marking 96 years since the guns fell silent in 1918.
The event is marked to symbolise the bravery and sacrifice of troops, especially diggers in past
and present and that ordinary people "were not ordinary at all" during the war.
Students from Shalom Christian College both from primary and secondary had the privilege to
attend this special event. They laid the Wreaths (thanks to Aunty Meriana Obed) at the foot of
the Cenotaph in Townsville and others who attended the event placed poppies on the Stone of
Remembrance, symbolising the fallen soldiers.
Counsellor - Raj

HEALTHY CHOICE
‘N eed for Feed’ Cookery Program
We have been lucky enough to be funded by Diabetes Qld to run cookery classes every Wednesday night in Term 4. Patricka Gisu was employed as a cookery assistant and she helped do the shopping, set up the room, assist the students and clean up.
I think Patricka enjoyed the classes just as much as the students did- even though she was working!
We have made Pizzas (including making the pizza dough), Smoothies, Milkshakes, Pineapple and
Chicken Stir-fry, Muffins and Spicy Chicken Burritos so far.
Who would have thought that a heart-shaped pizza would look so good?!
This Saturday we are making Omelettes, Muesli bars and Raspberry Loaves, which should make for a
delicious morning tea.
The students have had a fun time in class and I have really enjoyed their sense of humour and energy.
Everything has been edible so far!

YOUNG WARRIORS PROGRAM
Young Warriors: Taking Time to De-stress before Formal Evening Graduating Year 12 plays a significant chapter in our student’s journey at Shalom Christian College. Students, parents and the community celebrate the most anticipated day of the year–Formal. This includes in encouraging and inspiring students throughout each year to make their commitment to graduate with their class. The Young Warriors have been spending the last week at school participating in health programs and finishing up their assignments working along with teachers, support staff and others who were willing to give up their personal time to achieve their goals. To de-stress the Young Warriors went for a movie, a great way to relax and hang out with peers before a formal evening at Mercure Inn. Counsellor Raj

T erm 4 – Boarding
What a great term we have had in boarding! It’s been one of the best terms that I can remember!
Everyone has been well behaved and getting on great with each other.
Over the mid-term break some of the House Parents – uncles and aunties, did a clean and spruce up of the boys
dorm and got it looking at its best. Well, at the end of term the boys can be proud of how they have kept it
clean. Last week I took some parents and students who are coming here to board next year in Year 7 (now that
Year 7 is secondary school across Queensland) to look at the Girls Dorm, and the parents and children were so
impressed that some girls were ready to move in straight away.
What has happened this term:
Some of the Elcho Island students danced at the opening of a Child Care Centre playground and also at a
function at the Casino
The kitchen put on a great Christmas dinner on Wednesday 19 November before the Year 12’s left
We shared in the joys and goodbyes of the graduating Year 12’s and saw them all get dressed up flash for
their Formal
We went to a Greek and an Indian Festival to experience a little of some other cultures
We loved cooling off with a swim at Riverway on a few occasions
We shared church twice with the Calvary Elevate Youth
We had fun at Laser Zone and went to Iggy Park Disco twice
We also went to Launch Zone – a trampoline game place – for the first time and had so much fun that we
will get back there each term in 2015
Boarding is no way boring!!
Thank you to the Uncles and Aunties who work so hard in Boarding!
Thank you to the Boarders for listening to the Uncles and Aunties, and for doing your best!
Thank you to the Services Staff who prepare our food and fix anything that stops working!
Thank you God for helping us each day!
It’s been a great team effort and a special time for working as the Shalom family to make 2014 so
good.
Have a wonderful Christmas as you celebrate Jesus’ birthday and the ultimate gift that has been given to us.
Stay safe and enjoy your time at home with your family and others who you love.
See you next year when you return to go on with your education.
God bless,
Paul Tolliday

G IRLS RUGBY LEAGUE COWBOYS CHALLENGE
Friday the 24th October saw the girls school rugby league team partake in the Girls Cowboys challenge held at Junior Rugby league Grounds. The Girls played 4 games overall and produced some really good footy. They lost 3 of those games but were gallant in defeat. Their sole win saw the girls produce some amazing skills and defence and ran out 4 tries to 2 victors.
G irls AFL
The Girls AFL team have been playing on Wednesday's afternoon in the GIRLS Open AFL school competition. Up to date they have played 3 games with 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss. The girls have displayed some outstanding football skills that have seem them compete in every game. On top of that they have enjoyed themselves and
have displayed great sportsmanship at all times. Well done ladies!!!

A thletics
At the end of October Lance Hudson and Thomas Clarke travelled to Brisbane representing North Queensland in Athletics at the State Championships. This was an amazing accomplishment considering that neither of the boys specialise in Athletics and a pointer to how talented they are as sportsmen. Both boys finished just outside the top 10 in the State in their events. Lance for U16 Javelin and Tom for U17 High Jump. The boys enjoyed the experience and coupled with trips to Suncorp Stadium to watch the Brisbane Roar take on Sydney FC in the A-League and the Aussies take on the Kiwis in the Rugby League Four Nations meant for a memorable weekend.

WOMEN’S AFL FOOTBALL
“The Back Page”
Townsville Eagles Youth Girls AFL
In late October the first ever Townsville Eagles Youth Girls AFL team which included 5 Shalom College students
Delma Gisu, Pamai Dau, Reannen Lalara, Jaydene Laurie and Rikkisha Gaykamangu travelled to Brisbane to begin their
state championships campaign.
While the first game was not the scoreboard result the team was looking for, it most certainly gave the girls their first taste of high level football and taught them valuable lessons they would use in the games ahead.
With each game, the girls grew in confidence and their true ability began to shine through, defeating Wide Bay by a single point in game 3 and absolutely smashing Mackay by 56 points in game 4.
The girls finished fourth overall after a hard four days of football.
Shalom’s Delma Gisu was named as Townsville’s best player following stellar performances throughout the carnival.
Delma was electrifying with the ball in her hands.
Pamai, even though she carried an injury for all of the carnival, attacked the football like a warrior.
Rikkisha was the team goal sneak.
Reannen was a tough competitor tackling anyone within reach and Jaydene was solid and reliable every time her teammates needed her.
