A Message from the Dean
I am delighted that our undergraduate students from the SFU Beedie School of Business will once again be participating in the JDC West 2013 Competition. This is one of the most prestigious business school competitions in Canada and showcases the innovative learning environment that exists at Simon Fraser University and the business students who thrive at SFU’s Beedie School of Business. JDC West is also the largest undergraduate business competition in Western Canada. It provides students with the necessary skills to solve real-‐world challenges within a wide range of business areas, from entrepreneurship to technology to accounting. The competition fosters leadership, promotes camaraderie and encourages students to broaden their world outlook. JDC West typifies the kind of competition that the Beedie School of Business encourages our students to participate in. The event exemplifies professionalism and excellence and focuses on the unique challenges facing a Western Canadian business student. To this end, JDC West represents an important opportunity to build upon the learning that takes place in the classroom. The generous participation of industry supporters will allow our students to refine their skills, build their network and bolster their undergraduate learning experience. The business acumen of the competition has proven invaluable for previous participants and with this year’s competition being held in Vancouver we can look forward to some strong home support. On behalf of SFU’s Beedie School of Business, I would like to thank you for engaging with SFU’s JDC West team. Sincerely, Daniel Shapiro Dean, Beedie School of Business, Simon Fraser University

What is JDC West? JDC West brings together 600 students from eleven universities, for a three-‐day competition, to compete in the areas of academics, debate, athletics and social challenges. The competition also empowers young business professionals with opportunities to become more involved in their communities, by encouraging them to give back. The academic competition encompasses cases in ten disciplines: Accounting, Business Strategy, Finance, Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, International Business, Marketing, MIS, Not-‐for-‐Profit Strategy and Taxation, as well as a Parliamentary Debate. Athletics promotes the active lifestyle, where students will compete in both net-‐ball and dodge ball. Finally, the social competition is where teams are challenged on their endurance, spirit, and teamwork in challenges comparable to The Amazing Race, Survivor, and The Apprentice. After months of preparation, the ultimate goal is to be named The School of the Year. This title is a direct reflection of a university’s performance throughout the competition and its dedication to achieving excellence.

Amit Bhagat Co-‐Captain External I am currently in my final year at the Beedie School of Business, concentrating in Accounting and Finance. I decided to Co-‐Captain JDC West as I witnessed the true potential that SFU had at the competition in 2012, when I competed on the Human Resource Management team. With my fellow Co-‐Captain, I hope to capitalize upon our new initiatives to build a strong foundation for the future. Phone: 604.836.2648 Email: [email protected]
Joel Thom Co-‐Captain Internal I am the midst of completing my fourth year at the Beedie School of Business, concentrating in Marketing and International Business. After competing for two years, and most recently placing second in the Social competition I wanted to take on a larger role within the team.
