Readings for Sunday, May 31, 2020

Solemnity of Pentecost:

Acts 2:1–11 1 Cor 12:3b–7, 12–13 or Rom 8:8–17 Ps 104:1, 24,

29–30, 31, 34 Jn 20:19–23 or 14:15–16, 23b–26

Today’s reading from Acts describes

external manifestations that accompanied

the outpouring of the Spirit. These

phenomena were audible and visible

though the actual outpouring of the Spirit

was not. As those present were filled with

the Spirit, they began to speak in other languages, a feat that

could only have some supernatural origin. The crowd that

gathered was confused, astonished, and amazed. The exact

nature of this marvel is less significant than is its meaning. It

was clearly a manifestation of the universal presence and

power of the Spirit. The outpouring of the Spirit and the

preaching of the gospel to all nations are considered the

reuniting of the human race and the gathering of all into the

reign of God.

The responsorial psalm depicts God as the creator and

sustainer of all life. God is described as robed in majesty and

glory, wrapped around with radiant light. The splendor of the

natural world is attributed to the wisdom of the creator. God

is also extolled as the one who cares for all living things. The

act of creation and the power of the creator are perceived in

the constant renewal of life that unfolds before our eyes. God

is both the original creator and the one who continues to

control the forces of nature. Finally, God not only creates but

re-creates. Life is sustained and perpetuated. This is all reason

enough to bless the Lord.

Three different yet related themes are found in the reading

from 1 Corinthians: an acclamation of the lordship of Jesus; a

defense of diversity within the community; the body

metaphor characterizing that diversity. Lord (kýrios) was the

official title of the Roman emperor. It is also the Greek

substitute for God’s personal name. To proclaim Jesus as

Lord both challenged the sovereignty of the emperor and

testified to Jesus' divine character. Comparing the Christian

community to the complexity of the human body, Paul insists

that all of the functions within the community were

manifestations of the Spirit, and none was to be considered

superior to another. Rather, all gifts were given for the benefit

of the entire community.

John’s appearance account treats the resurrection and the

bestowal of the Spirit as having occurred on the same day, the

first day of the week. Where previously religious meaning

was given to the Sabbath, the conclusion of the week, now the

focus is on the beginning, on the future. The wish of peace, a

common Jewish greeting, was also a prayer for eschatological

blessing. Calling attention to his wounds, Jesus shows that he

is the same man who was crucified, but now he is risen.

Breathing the Spirit, the risen Lord portrays himself as one

who can create or re-create. With the bestowal of the Spirit,

the disciples are authorized to continue the mission of Jesus.

Reflection: IMMERSED IN THE VIGOR OF THE

SPIRIT OF GOD

Pentecost celebrates the fullness of the Spirit and the great

gathering of nations. It brings the Easter season to its

conclusion. The Risen Lord has been exalted to his rightful

place next to God and he has sent his Spirit to fill the earth

with God's power. The world is charged with divine energy;

it needs but a spark to ignite it with life and with excitement.

This vitality explodes into the extraordinary. Tongues are

loosed and speech overflows its linguistic constraints;

charismatic gifts flood the valleys of human habitation;

barred doors are burst open and frightened hearts are calmed.

The Spirit of the Lord fills the whole world. Once again, we

gather together for one reason, only to discover that God has

gathered us for another. Through the Spirit of God, we are

reconciled to each other and then together we spend ourselves

for the common good. Through the Spirit of God the world is

renewed, the community is revitalized, and we come to know

the mysterious yet all pervasive peace of Christ. The Spirit

has been poured forth and works wonders wherever human

hearts are open to its promptings. The earth is renewed each

time rivalries are resolved, distinctions are recognized as

merely expressions of diversity, peace is restored, comfort

and solace are offered, and forgiveness is granted. We are

immersed in the vigor of the Spirit of God. All we have to do

is open ourselves to it and the reign of God will be born in our

midst.

Thoughts to consider this Week:

THE SPIRIT IS STILL AT WORK

The traditional Pentecost hymn is “Veni

Sancte Spiritus” (“Come, Holy Spirit”). It’s

called the Golden Sequence—a sequence

being a prayer that precedes the gospel

reading. It became part of the Pentecost liturgy

in the 16th century but was written earlier,

probably by Cardinal Stephen Langton of

Canterbury around the year 1200. It’s

tempting to treat the Mass as something that

fell from heaven as is. Liturgy is a

collaborative effort, woven across centuries—

and evolving still. Put your unique stamp on it.

Our parish will once again begin a set of sessions to share with others the truths of the Catholic faith and the fellowship of our church family. We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment.

These sessions also are opportunities for you to ask those perplexing and difficult questions you may have about the Church. Sessions will be held on Thursdays at 7:00 PM. This first session is scheduled to begin on September 17 in the Parish Center. If you have questions or would like further information, please contact Deacon Gohde at 215-699-4617 or [email protected]

Feed the Need NOW!

The parishioners at St. Rose are fantastic! A few weeks ago, we let you know that because of the effects to communities everywhere due to the coronavirus, there were many more people going to local food cupboards to get food for their families. We asked you, if possible, to increase your non-perishable food donations to help meet the increased demands on food cupboards. AND YOU HAVE RESPONDED! Over the past few weeks, your donations have increased by 45%!

Saint Rose Parish, and those benefitting from your donations, graciously thank you!

Because the need continues to be so great, our Social Justice Team asked ourselves if there is more we can be doing to garner non-perishable food donations. We struck upon the idea of having a community donation event.

We are pleased to announce that on May 29-30-31, there will be a unified outreach by Church of the Messiah, Gwynedd Friends, Sanctuary United Methodist Church, St. Peter's Lutheran Church and St. Rose of Lima Church called Community Donation Days. All five churches are announcing

the program this weekend.

This initiative invites the entire North Penn and Gwynedd community to donate non-perishable food paper products, and household cleaning/sanitizing items to help restock the supplies at Manna on Main Street, Mattie Dixon Community Cupboard and Inter-Faith Housing Alliance Food Cupboard.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? We are asking members of every congregation to distribute an Information Flyer to neighbors, friends, family and co-workers via email, on social

media, or drop off a paper flyer to their front door inviting them to spread the word and make donations. Paper copies of the flyer are available for you to pick up from a holder next to the collection bins outside the main doors of the Parish Center. We truly want to make this a community effort and response.

Collection sites will be at all participating churches on May 29-30-31. Collection times are 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. People may choose a location that is most convenient for them.

We invite your participation to make Community Donation Days a resounding success. THANK YOU!
