Howard Zinn on Raceis Zinns choice of the shorter writings and speeches

that best reflect his views on Americas most taboo topic. As chairman ofthe history department at all black womens Spelman College, Zinn was an

outspoken supporter of student activists in the nascent civil rights move-

I would argue that the end of the VietnamWarenabled the people of the United States to shake the war syn-

drome, a disease not natural to the human body. But they

could be infected once again, and September 11 gave the gov-

ernment that opportunity. Terrorism became the justification

for war, but war is itself terrorism, breeding rage and hate, as

we are seeing now.The war in Iraq has revealed the hypocrisy of the war on ter-

rorism. And the government of the United States, indeed

governments everywhere, are becoming exposed as untrustwor-

thy: that is, not to be entrusted with the safety of human beings,

or the safety of the planet, or the guarding of its air, its water,

its natural wealth, or the curing of poverty and disease, or cop-

ing with the alarming growth of natural disasters that plague so

many of the 6 billion people on Earth.

another plunge into violence and dishonor. It seems to me that

when the war in Iraq ends, and the war syndrome heals, there

will be a great opportunity to make that healing permanent.

My hope is that the memory of death and disgrace will be

so intense that the people of the United States will be able to

listen to a message that the rest of the world, sobered by wars

without end, can also understand: that war itself is the enemy

of the human race.Governments will resist this message. But their power is

ABOUT SEVEN STORIES INSTITUTE

Seven Stories Presss mission, paraphrasing Nelson Algren, dwells more on the

American reality than the American dream. But writing and publishing is only part

of the story. Today, many communities do not have reasonable access to good books

or contact with authors, whether its because they are poor, nonEnglish-

speaking, underserved by bookstores, inadequately wired, or, as is often the case,

they face all of these challenges.

Seven Stories Institute was founded in 2004 as a response to this dearth, with

the mission to bring books and connect authors to the very people who could bene-

fit most from them. Through author forums, staged readings, and the free or highly

subsidized distribution of books, Seven Stories Institute seeks ultimately to promote

literacy and the active exchange of ideas, imagination, and the written word.

Over the years, the Institute has organized and hosted events in Spanish and

English with Ariel Dorfman, Paco Taibo, Howard Zinn, and the Boston Womens

Health Book Collective. In 2009, with the support of the Lannan Foundation

and the National Book Foundation, the Institute celebrated the 100th anniver-

sary of Algrens birth with a sold-out performance entitled Nelson Algren Live

at Chicagos Steppenwolf Theatre, with Russell Banks, Willem Dafoe, Don

DeLillo, Barry Gifford, Rick Kogan, Martha Lavey, Randall Newsome, Kathy

Scambiatterra, and Dan Simon. Algrens books were distributed free to libraries

and schools across the country.

In 201011, the Institute is working with groups in northern Manhattan to

develop an oral history project of Washington Heights immigration stories, and to

produce a theatrical adaptation of Howard Zinns A Young Peoples History of the
