We were well welcomed by the teachers of the school but their English level is very

low, which can explain the English level of the children. The English course is in the curriculum of the government schools but absolutely not adapted to their level. They are teached to repeat, to write and to remember, not to understand or even to use what they learnt. Their teaching methods are not involving the children. This is why we are giving them new methods such as activities, writing and speaking. “Tell them they will forget, teach them they will remember, involve them they will learn”. Our main purposes are to improve their English level, to improve the capacity of the school, to involve them, to improve their self-thinking, to improve their personal skills and to raise their awareness about sport and environment. The children in those schools come from poor areas and backgrounds. They are, for most of them, the first generation of learners in their families. However, their willingness to learn is very strong despite the condition under which they do so. Indeed, the standards of the government schools are very bad, the rooms are dark and empty. There is not enough stationary for all of them. In one of the schools, girls and boys are not mixed : they are sitting in 2 different sides of the classroom and it is hard to make them communicate and interact. Girls seem scared of the boys, they are very shy.

“Tell them, they will forget - Teach them, they will remember - Involve them, they will learn”

Changes since last month : - third government school added in the project (Khanodi school: primary and upper classes until grade eight) with 3 new volunteers - starting afternoon English lesson (tuition) in Dev Bagh from grade 3 to grade 10 for about 100 villages’s children - Building up sports-activity ground in Dev Bagh to empower community of rural youth - New volunteer Morgane who came for 1 week to start a communication campaign for

English classes: how many children : 55 Bawkan School, 57 Udawton Ki Dany School (more students coming), 87 Khanodi School attendance : some of them don’t go to school everyday due to personal reasons (illness, wedding, to help their parents) topics of lessons : we are teaching basic English to the children. Compared to last month, the

children are now able to introduce themselves, to talk about them, their family, what they like, colors, etc. They are able to have a short conversation. The starters now know the alphabet and are starting to write some of the letters. The children are also starting reading lessons.

Our main focus is to help them to think by themselves, understand why and what they’re learning and improve their personal learning skills.

Students progress : In the three schools, they can now understand basic everyday situations in english and we can communicate more with the children. They can answer and ask simple questions. They are even more confident about us and them compared to last month. Lessons are now about emphasising what the students already learned and making sure they know notions learned : the english alphabet, numbers, body parts, colors, left & right, introduce themselves with “what is your name” “where are you from” “how are you” and for the oldest “how old are you” “how many sister and brother do you have” “what is your father’s/mother’s/brother’s/sister’s name...” “What do you like” “Where do you live”. They all are able to understand what we ask when it’s simple (sit down, stand up…). Furthermore, we add new topics/notions in our lessons : doing lecture exercises, teaching them how to describe each other and themselves (i.e. Neha is a girl, she has long hair, she has a brown shirt, she has beautiful earrings, etc.). We train them to do dialogues between them, to

ask each other questions. Also, we start reading lessons with the beginners. In Khanodi school, the volunteers created pre-lunch English girls-class over all grades because

they realized that the girls students in the school are far behind when it comes to the english lessons compared to the boys. This initiative is to allow the girls to have the same english level as the boys. Workshops and educational movies : Short summary of each Workshop :

- Basics about HYGIENE for children : correctly washing your hands; how to brush your teeth; how to cough correctly. Interactive training with movies and exercises.

Continue the practice in the following days with washing hands before & after lunch and caring for each other.

- Khanodi school: *The WORLD : the continents, different countries in the world, different languages, special food all over the world. Where is India, in which continent (introduction to the question “Where are you from?” and its answer “I am from India”).

Special comments: Any visitors? Sheeren and friend from Sambhali US Special occasion : Learning games or movies on Fridays after the class.

The SETU Pilot Project in Setrawa was for us a success ; although the worldwide coronavirus crisis puts an early stop on it. The pilot project was for three months : January to March. The government schools closed on March 16th. During these two months and a half, the English level of the students in all schools improved a lot. They are now able to have a basic conversation about day to day life, their vocabulary increased and most importantly they improved their self-thinking and their personal educational skills. By involving them in what they are learning, they have a better understanding of the lessons. Unfortunately, we couldn’t finish the program we planned for the three months. However, we are very satisfied with the progress of all the students. We highly encourage the continuation of the SETU Project in Setrawa village in the early future. It was a great experience !

“Tell them, they will forget - Teach them, they will remember - Involve them, they will learn”
