SERVOMEX HAS ANNOUNCED A MAJOR DEAL WITH RELIANCE INDUSTRIES LIMITED TO COMPLETELY REFIT VINYL CHLORIDE MONOMER (VCM) MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS AT ITS DEHAJ PLANT IN GUJURAT, INDIA.
NEW PRODUCTS & DEVELOPMENTS
One of the world’s top petro-chemical product manufacturers, Reliance is continuing its well-established relationship with Servomex in the upgrade of its Dehaj plant.
The $1.2 million contract will see Servomex involved in the commissioning, planning and build at the plant, as well as the installation of its equipment.
A combination of the OxyExact, SpectraExact and FluegasExact analysers will provide unequalled levels of accuracy and an unsurpassed measurement solution for the VCM plant.

Following the success of Servomex’s revolutionary TruRef Thermo-Conductivity Detector (TCD) technology, the TCD sensor range is being extended with new measurements for He and H2 in the SERVOPRO MonoExact analyser and He in the SERVOPRO MultiExact multigas analyser.
The new measurements deliver unrivalled TCD performance standards for He and H2, particularly in terms of measurement accuracy, repeatability and drift – making them ideal for use in product purity and process control applications.
Newly granted CSA certification for DF-340E means the oxygen analyser is now suitable for use where ignitable concentrations of gases, vapours or liquids are present under abnormal operating conditions.
Class I Div II approval not only validates the robust quality of the DF-340E design, but expands its use for a range of applications that require safety certification including pressure swing absorber nitrogen skids, HYCO plants, olefins purity, reactor process control, oil refining and numerous petrochemical applications.

IN A SPEECH TO THE 16TH CHINA SPECIALTY GAS FORUM IN BEIHAI, ASIA PACIFIC INDUSTRY MANAGER, DAWEI ZHANG INTRODUCED THE SERVOMEX DF RANGE TO MORE THAN 100 DELEGATES FROM SPECIALTY GAS, GAS FILLING AND ANALYSER PROVIDERS.
Trace Products Business Manager Regis Loubatiere was on hand to answer delegates’ questions and demonstrate how the Servomex product range can be applied to create specific solutions.
The China Online Analytical Instrument Forum in Beijing also gave Servomex the opportunity to introduce the its innovative new TruRef TCD technology and its range of SERVOTOUGH analysers for combustion applications.
Asia Pacific Industry Manager, Dawei Zhang explained how Servomex combustion analysers allow air-fuel ratio to be controlled for maximum fuel efficiency and reported excellent feedback.

The new SERVOPRO PureGas gas purifier - to be launched in early 2013 - offers the near-total purification of carrier gases for Gas Chromatography (GC) and other analytical applications.
With Ultra High Purity (UHP) gases expensive to bottle and difficult to trans-fill without contamination, the SERVOPRO PureGas enables users to purify gases onsite at the point of use, minimising the risk of gas contamination.
Available for Ar and He matrices, the PureGas purifier delivers outlet impurity levels for O2, H2O, CO, CO2, H2, CH4 and N2. By employing a patented getter alloy to attract gas molecules at multiple temperature profiles, the PureGas can purify from Grade 5.0 – in which the level of impurity will not exceed 10 ppm – to Grade 7.0 UHP gas purities suitable for a GC carrier gas.

Able to measure CH4, CO and CO2 down to less than 50 ppb, this single instrument is capable of measuring a range of impurities with such accuracy that it clearly represents a capital saving and reduced integration costs. “Used to separate gas mixtures in industrial gas production, gas chromatography (GC) is exceptionally accurate, so much so it will measure concentrations down to parts-per-billion.
“Well suited for use in high-purity processes, unlike most gas analysis techniques the measurement is made once the gas sample has been separated rather than within the sample.
By circulating a gas sample the individual gases are separated using an inert carrier gas such as helium or an unreactive gas like nitrogen. This mobile phase flows through to the stationary phase inside a column, or tube, where the component gases are separated due to their interaction with a microscopic layer of liquid or polymer.
The gas content is quantified by an electronic sensor at the column outlet
measuring the retention times, or elution, of specific molecules as they bind to the column material at different rates.
“Gas types are identified by the order in which they elute from the column, which is determined by plotting the detector signal strength against elution time. At the same time the relative volume of each gas concentration gas be measured.
“GC process conditions can be varied to suit a variety of
applications. So, the column and detector temperatures may be altered as can the carrier gas flow rates, the sample loop size and the diameter, type and length of the column itself.”

Gas chromatography is most commonly used to quantify impurities in bulk gas production. Its sensitivity makes it ideal in process control to optimise a gas and to measure the quality of a supplied gas.
When the analyser is correctly calibrated and tuned for the application, the sensitivity and versatility and accuracy of the measurement makes GC a popular choice for a range of air separation unit (ASU) processes, including measurement of hydrocarbons as well as demonstrably improving levels of Ar recovery.

A zirconia-based oxygen analyser exhibits excellent response characteristics to changes in O2 content, can measure ppm concentrations of O2 and the same sensor can be used to measure 100% O2.Zirconia’s major advantage is that it can be used in in-situ instruments such as the SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact, where the measuring probe can be placed directly into a flue for high-temperature combustion gas analysis, thus eliminating the need for extractive sampling equipment. As a consequence the zirconia sensor is an ideal instrument for combustion control applications to determine combustion efficiency, but can also be used by manufacturers of chemicals and petrochemicals, ceramics, and glass for stack applications.
The zirconia sensor consists of a cell made of ceramic zirconium oxide and stabilized with an oxide of yttrium or calcium. This forms a lattice structure and is maintained in a temperature-controlled environment. The cell is coated on the inside and outside with a conductive coating – originally platinum, but superseded by new materials - that serve as electrodes on both sides of the lattice.
At high temperatures above 700°C, the openings in the lattice permit the passage of O2 ions. When a sample gas is introduced on one side of the lattice, O2 ions pass through the lattice at a rate determined by temperature and the difference in the O2 partial pressures of the sample gas and the reference gas (usually air) on the other side of the lattice.
The passage of O2 ions through the lattice produces a voltage across the platinum electrodes. The magnitude of this voltage is a logarithmic
function of the ratio of the O2 partial pressures of the sample and reference gas, and, since the partial pressure of the reference gas is predetermined, the voltage produced by the cell indicates the oxygen content of the sample gas. The voltage increases as the oxygen concentration of the sample decreases and no voltage is produced when air is on both sides of the lattice.
Although traditional zirconia technology offered an excellent performance, platinum cells showed high cross-sensitivity to the presence of trace combustibles commonly present in reducing gases, leading to the zirconia cell output indicating a lower level than the real O2 value. However the development of inhibited catalyst electrodes - utilising alternative metals such as silver or gold but retaining their ability to operate at a lower temperature without significantly degrading the other important performance
parameters – counters these problems with a significant reduction in cross-sensitivity to trace combustibles.
The inhibited catalyst sensor manufactured by Servomex maximises the benefits of zirconia technology, in particular a faster recovery time when exposed to high ppm levels of O2 compared to a wet electrochemical sensor.
The accuracy of the inhibited catalyst zirconia sensor measuring ppm O2 in the presence of trace amounts of combustibles has been validated by testing by a number of major industrial gas producers using the SERVOPRO MultiExact and SERVOPRO 4100 multigas analysers: For instance Servomex’s inhibited catalyst zirconia O2 sensor has been shown to be able to provide the required accuracy for nitrogen purity monitoring in the presence of trace hydrogen, methane and carbon monoxide.
