Reflections

of an

Assistant

“I’ve never even heard of Jesus, but I want to know more about him.” This isn’t a quote from some remote African village. It was from an Upper Cumberland middle school student who wandered into an FCA meeting. I’m not a sports fan, and I knew nothing about Fellowship of Christian Athletes when Noel Cherry asked me if I would occasionally help him send out some correspondence. When I said “yes”, I had no idea I was being called into the mission field. No—not to some foreign country—but right here in the Upper Cumberland. Most people don’t have a clue just how completely void of the knowledge of God most young people are right here in our own community. FCA is reaching the masses in our own backyard, as student-led groups meet weekly during the school year. In addition, there are special events held where students hear someone share their personal story of the devastation caused by drugs and alcohol—but who are now living the abundant life because of their surrender to Jesus Christ. Based on response cards that were turned in following this year’s special events, 188 young people made a first time faith confession to surrender their lives to Jesus Christ from these events alone! Come summer, dozens of students from around the Upper Cumberland are scholarshiped to attend FCA Leadership Camp. The testimonies that these young people share as they return from camp are amazing! Lives are transformed by the truth of scripture and the love of Christ that they encounter during that week. So next time you are offered the opportunity to support your local FCA, know that you are sowing seeds that will reap an eternal harvest—right here in your own backyard.
