About 100 people attended Monday’s Memorial Day Ceremony on the courthouse lawn. The event was held to honor fallen soldiers from the county. Bobby Kendrick, Acting Commander of the American Legion Post 71, served as Master of Ceremonies for the event. Rockcastle County remembers her fallen heroes Memorial Day “Remembering Those That Gave All,” was the theme of the Memorial Ser- vice conducted on the court- house lawn at 10 a.m. Mon- day before a crowd of about 100. The ceremony was to honor Rockcastle sons who gave their lives in the cause of freedom. The service was sponsored by the local Ameri- can Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Acting American Legion Commander Bobby Kendrick opened the service and wel- comed the crowd and then led them in the Pledge of Alle- giance. Pastor Mark Eaton gave an opening prayer, fol- lowed by the Posting of the Colors. The Color bearers were Roger McClure (VFW), Earl Phillips (America Le- gion), Deputy Joe Rush (Sheriff’s Office) and Lt. Ryan Messinger (Fire Depart- ment.) Also in attendance were Sheriff Mike Peters and Mt. Vernon Police Officer Nathan Swartz. County Judge/Executive Buzz Carloftis gave a won- derful speech that touched on the history of Memorial Day and why we should remem- ber our fallen soldiers. Names of Rockcastle soldiers were read from the Roll of Heroes by Virginia Darst (WWI), Karen Powell & Gary Mink (WWII), Chuck Abney (Korean War), and Mt. Vernon Mayor Gary Cromer (Vietam War.) To honor those that gave all, Betty Lindblom and Norma Mullins, repre- senting the Daughters of the American Revolution, placed a wreath at the podium which was later placed on the Me- morial. The U.S. flag is composed of three colors which repre- sent the Holy Trinity of God. 2. The three colors represent: Red-the blood of Christ. White-the Lamb of God with- out blemish. Blue-Heaven. What the American Flag symbolizes 3. The stripes on the flag rep- resent the stripes Christ re- ceived from the Roman whip. 4. The stars in the blue can- ton represent the individual states as Christ was the bright & morning star. 5. The original flag had 13 stars in a circle. The circle represented the Heavenly Fa- ther who is without beginning or ending of days. 6. The U.S. flag is always dis- played at the far right when displayed with other flags. This represents that Christ sets at the right hand of God. 7.The American Flag is raised at dawn and lowered at dusk. This represents the death and resurrection of Christ. (Cont. to B4)
