Happy New Year!

Thank you to the sponsors, instructors, speakers and those who attended our December meeting!

Our design class series continued in December with our instructors, Mike Melaragni and Paul Baker, reviewing Horizontal and Vertical Wet Vents. The

January design class will cover Circuit Venting.

The technical sessions for the December meeting covered two topics, Emergency Fixture Design and Engineering and Scald Prevention.

Travis McKnight, a representative for Guardian Plumbing, reviewed Emergency Fixture Design and Engineering. He began his presentation with a discussion on understanding the regulatory agency requirements. OSHA requires that suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body be provided within the work area for immediate use, however does not provide specific guidelines for meeting this requirement. ANSI developed standard ANSI Z358.1 to provide the guideline for emergency fixture design, performance, maintenance, etc. The Michigan Plumbing Code, Section 411.1 requires emergency showers and eyewash stations to conform to ANSI Z358.1.

In addition to discussing the regulatory agencies, a review was provided with photos of different types of emergency fixtures such as eye/face washes, drench hoses, freeze-resistant fixtures, the types of materials the fixtures may be constructed from, and available accessories for the fixtures.

An important component to provide in emergency fixture design is a thermostatic mixing valve. Thermostatic mixing valves for emergency fixtures conforming to ASSE 1071 will limit the temperature from being set above 100°F. Per ANSI Z358.1, emergency fixtures are required to deliver tepid water, which is defined as 60°F-100°F.

The mixing valve is designed to utilize only cold water to meet the minimum flow requirements of the emergency fixture in the event of a hot water failure. In the event of a cold water failure, the mixing valves are designed to shut off the hot water flow to prevent the user from being scalded.

Scald prevention is an important aspect of hot water system design. Ron George, CPD and President of Plumb-Tech Design & Consulting Service, LLC, discussed this topic as the 2nd technical session at the December meeting.

Ron reviewed the findings in studies completed to determine the amount of exposure time before a serious scald burn would occur. It was found that adults exposed to 120°F water would have up to 8 minutes before a serious scald burn would start to develop. For children and the elderly, it would require less time due to thinner skin. A chart displaying the

Consultant ReportJohn Nussbaum, IPP, FASSE/ASPE

As we begin 2015 it’s time to look back and reflect on those associations who helped make the Plumbing and Mechanical Industry in Southeastern Michigan the remarkable industry it is today. ASPE, ASSE and MBPA, whose members come from all the plumbing and mechanical related disciplines

inclusive of the design professionals, contractors, organized labor, manufacturers and their representatives. Once a year these organizations recognize one of their own at the ASSE/ASPE Awards Banquet. On Saturday February 7th 2015 this annual event (which began in 1972) will take place at the Shriners Silver Garden Events Center in Southfield.

This year’s event is special because the Michigan Chapters of the American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE), the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) and the Michigan Backflow Prevention Association (MBPA) wish to Honor the Detroit affiliate of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCA DETROIT) for its support in man hours and resources for the past 26 years of my participation within these organizations. I’ve been and still remain the liaison between these organizations and MCA Detroit. MCA Detroit staff has worked with me to provide the ASPE/ASSE newsletter which has been judged as one of the best in the plumbing industry. This year the awards will include special awards to MCA staff members Theresa Green and Casandra Mudloff. The John R. Lifetime Achievement Award presentation will be given for the first time since 2006 to an individual who has promoted public health, safety and the betterment of the plumbing Industry. This year’s other award winners were carefully selected by their respective organizations and are well known throughout the plumbing industry in Southeastern Michigan. The awards are the Albert Cohen Award (Inspector of the Year), the John E. Matthews Award (Engineer of the Year), the Larry Burkheiser Backflow Award (Cross Connection Person of the Year), Malcolm Wallace Award (Manufacturers Representative of the Year), and the much coveted L. Glen Shields Award (established by the ASSE Michigan Chapter in 1972). Two mechanical engineering students will be the recipients of scholarship money from the John E. Matthews Scholarship Fund.

This year’s keynote speaker is Julius Ballanco, P.E., CPD, and FASPE. Julius is a well-known graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology; he is both a Registered Professional Engineer and a Licensed Master Plumber. He is president of J.B Engineering and Code Consulting, P.C. He will keep you well informed and entertained; you won’t want to miss this! Also in attendance will be national representatives of ASSE, ASPE and IAPMO.

Attendees will be receiving a 16 page complimentary booklet of this historic evening’s event including a brief history leading up to the merger of the associations into MCA Detroit

in 2006. This history will be presented on two plaques. One plaque will be displayed at the Plumbing Industry Training Center and the other will be housed at the MCA Detroit office. The plaques will be presented to representatives from the Plumbing Industry Training Center and MCA Detroit. I am hoping you will come out and take part in this historic event honoring MCA Detroit.

Hello and Happy New Year!

Here’s hoping that everyone had a great holiday season. Before I begin, I think this may be a good time to take a moment to introduce myself. I am a member of Plumbers Local 98 and the lead instructor for Plumbers Local 98 Training Center where I teach plumbing and related subjects

to the apprentice and journey plumbers of the Local Union. I am also the ASSE International Region 4 Director. This position, as a member of the ASSE Board of Directors, has placed me in a long line of Michigan Chapter members that have had the opportunity to make a contribution to ASSE on an international level. I hope to continue the tradition of strong Michigan Chapter participation at the international level.

This new year I will begin contributing a report on the news from the ASSE Board of Directors meetings. I hope that this will be informative and that it will open lines of communication that will be beneficial to the Michigan Chapter members. My original intent is for this to be a quarterly report after the Board of Director meetings, however if something of note happens, I will certainly report on it.

The ASSE Annual Meeting was held November 4-7, 2014 in Oklahoma City. This meeting saw the election of new officers, of note, Doug Marion was elected to succeed Steve Silber as ASSE International President and Dana Colombo was elected to the position of Vice President. The Michigan Chapter was well represented at the Awards Presentations. Our very own Barry Pines received the Patrick J. Higgins award for his work on codes and standards, he was also honored with the ASSE Fellow. Congratulations Barry, these awards are well deserved.

That’s all I have for now. I am always present at the joint ASPE/ASSE monthly meetings. I believe that you may have seen me before and now that I have introduced myself I hope to meet you at future meetings and hear your ideas on the future of the Michigan Chapter and ASSE International. Hope to see you soon.

ASPE News - Eastern Michigan Chapter 98 January 2015

Happy New Year! I wish everyone a great 2015. I hope everyone had a great holiday season and that you and your families are all in good health. The economy must have improved because the tail end of 2014 brought a substantial amount of work to my plate. I hope the same can be said for all of you.

Some changes are due to be implemented for the ASPE Eastern Michigan Chapter. I will be sending out copies of various Excel spreadsheets related to plumbing design to anyone that has attended a Technical Program and is a member of our chapter. These spreadsheets were painstakingly assembled by several members of ASPE from around the country. They are very in depth, and intuitive. I will issue three spreadsheets per month. You will need to sign in and out of each session to get credit, so please remember to do so.

I have also been sending certificates of completion to all attendees of our technical sessions. They are for your use during the recertification process for your CPD and/or PE designation. We hope that this will help improve the process and provide overwhelming backup.

The John Siegenthaler sessions are fast approaching. There is still plenty of room for attendees, so please do not hesitate to register. I, personally, am looking forward to the full day session on hydronics. We deal with these topics quite often.

Recently, we have encountered several issues on our projects related to plumbing design that I thought would be worthy to pass along so that we may be proactive in the future, especially before becoming an issue or annoyance to the customer.

The first issue that we have dealt with was the time required to get hot water to the end user with water saving faucets. This has been a recurring issue lately, and i am sure it is not the first time you have heard of this. The lavatories on a particular project consume .5 GPM. Even with the return line connection point situated so that we were only 15 feet from the faucet, well within code requirements, the faucet run time was still undesirable to get hot water to the lavatories. The team solved the issue by increasing the wet wall to a 6” stud and routing the recirculated hot water line directly behind the lavatories in the wall. This decreased the distance from the water line to the fixture to only a couple of feet. We also decreased the distance from the shower valves to the return lines, as well. The building is still under construction, but we are sure that this will bring the time to an acceptable level for the owner and the occupants. We intend on implementing a company standard mandating this practice, or at least a requirement to follow up with the plumbing engineer when this practice is not employed.

Another very interesting approach was taken to eliminate the need to run a grease suction hose across a finished lobby area when the grease interceptor was cleaned during regular maintenance. The engineer, based in New York City, had installed a dedicated line in the underground on previous projects and

VP EducationMark Lamberson, CPD

made the suggestion for this issue. We checked with the local AHJ and the grease truck company for their requirements. We ended up installing a 3” pumped grease line in the underground and extended it from the kitchen area to the exterior of the building. Upon arrival for maintenance, the grease truck operator connects the truck suction hose to the exterior connection point and uses a pump inside to remove the grease from the interceptor. The pump discharge connects to the line inside the building. We also provided some intermittent cleanouts along the line. I had never seen this before and thought the information may solve issues on other projects in the area. Please feel free to contact me on these topics, if needed.

Thank you again to all of the members that made 2014 a great year for our chapter. Thank you for attending the technical sessions and providing feedback on what we have tried so hard to provide. We review every one and take all comments into consideration for our future programs. I look forward to seeing you at the 2015 technical programs.

ASPE Region 2 Affiliate Liaison ReportDann Holmes

Santa was certainly kind to me this year! Anytime I can witness the excitement on the faces of young children opening gifts they weren’t expecting is a blessing to me. I must have been a good boy in 2014 to be able to experience such happiness. I shouldn’t tell you but it’s what I ask Santa for each & every year.

I trust the recent holidays and this past year were good to you too. I plan to continue with the same positive attitude that I had in 2014 throughout 2015. I’m starting out my New Year by attending as many ASPE Chapter meetings as I can. A well presented subject offers so much education.

But, as much as I plan to attend any ASPE Chapter meeting in Region 2, there always seems to be other industry events calling me away. January 19th – 23rd sends me to Las Vegas for KBIS 2015 (booth N1649), followed by the AHR Expo 2015 in Chicago the 25th – 29th (booth 1470). If you happen to be attending one, or both of these events, please stop by so we can visit. I’ll recap these trade shows in my next article.

This is the time of year when we update our files, file folders and mark all our e-mails read. If you’re like me, I tell myself I’ll stay current with this day-by-day. Yeah…right. That’s wishful thinking.

Here’s wishing a successful and prosperous New Year to you, your families and your employer. Without this combination working like a well designed plumbing system, life becomes too stressful. Make 2015 better than any year before it.

As always, please feel free to contact me at: NSF International – Business Development Manager [email protected] or (734) 214-6222

• The 3800 boasts of superior efficiencies and increased application coverage with larger pump sizes, and the tougher, stainless steel impeller will last longer on the job no matter what liquid is applied.

• The 3800 comes into two models: the 3801 Close Coupled and the 3804 Flexible Couple-Frame Mounted with capacities up to 4200 G.P.M. (954 m3/hr), heads to 520 Feet (180 Meters) and temperatures to 300°F (149°C). Some of the additional features include four, larger power frame sizes allowing contractors and engineers to choose the 3800 for a wider variety of projects and applications. The variety of frame sizes ensures customers will find the ideal-size pump to handle the requirements of their specific.

• Many current industrial and commercial installations in eastern Michigan. Please inquire within Kerr Pump for additional details or assistance in a selection.

With new national lead-free legislation,

there’s been a lot of talk about making the switch.

Here’s the truth: T&S was the fi rst fi xture, faucet

and fi tting manufacturer to convert its entire line

to lead-free alloys back in 2010.

So when you purchase a T&S faucet, the peace of

mind that comes with lead-free compliance

is built right in. No worries. No hassle.

LEAD-FREE. WORRY-FREE. HASSLE-FREE.
