Refractory Drying &Preheating
The refractories that line thethermal areas of cement produc-tion units, are designed for effi-ciency, durability and ease ofinstallation. Though they are ver-
satile and form a strong integralstructure, they are vulnerable innewly installed orgreen states.
Castable refrac-tory is susceptibleto explosive
spalling and macro-cracking.Damage from macro-cracking

may not be apparent until thefirst cool-down when the refrac-tory shrinks.
Plastic refractories can formshear planes if heated too slowlyand explode from steam pres-sure if heated too fast.
Hotwork’s heating systeminvolves convective heating withflame safety protection andquick acting temporary thermo-couples placed in critical areas.
Our unique dryout system usesfull fan output for convectiveheating for the entire heatrange and our burner dampersstart out wide open.
Temperature increases can beat any rate: 2º or 200º per hourto 1000º.
Firing Hoods, Nose Rings,Coolers (head & caption)
Hotwork treats these areas:Tertiary Air Duct, Firing Hood,Nose Ring, Tertiary Take-off,Bullnose, Drop-Out Chute,Curbs & Walls.
Normal startup problemsvs Hotwork method
During a normal startup usingthe kiln burner, heat is intro-duced at the firing hood anddrafts up the kiln. The coolerdoes what it is designed to do –cools. The refractory dry-outoccurs in a matter of secondswhen it is bathed in hot clinker.Using the Hotwork method, heating from the cooler driesthe curbs and bullnose and then
drafts up to dry and preheat thefiring hood and nose ring.Preheating can be done at thesame time as startup.
For a new line, Hotwork fre-
quently heats the entire systemincluding the cooler, kiln andtower. An additional benefit is inusing this heat for initial raw millproduction. This is one of thegreatest services we can providea new facility because there is noway to start a preheater withoutfeed and heat is needed from akiln to generate feed. A new rawmill needs a 2-3 day run to makeadjustments. We have run forweeks to fill silos.
Raw Mill heating & setu
Hotwork heats raw mills for initialtesting and to provide feed whilea kiln is down. We depend on IDfan or baghouse fans to pull theheat through the mill. For setupsHotwork systems are interlockedwith the ID fan. Alternate burnerpositions for mill heat involve toppreheater stage heating withmanways left open to ingress air.
