What is Love Bites?“Love Bites is an extremely successful school-based domestic and family violence and sexual assault prevention program for 15 to 17 year olds.It consists of two interactive education workshops on Domestic and Family Violence and Sexual Assault followed by creative workshops and community campaign. It is delivered by workers from local community agencies who have been trained as Love Bites facilitators.”
Who can run Love Bites?……..any professional who works in the area of Domestic and Family Violence or Sexual Assault and has an interest in or a responsibility for running violence against women prevention programs.…including sexual assault counsellors, school and family counsellors, police officers, women’s refuge workers, school teachers, school nurses and other professionals
What young people have said…
“ It felt good that we were able to talk and not be judged.”“I really enjoyed the program. It’s important to know what to do if you are in one of those situations and what to do to prevent and help those who suffer.”“We knew about some of these issues but nobody really talks about it. By talking about domestic violence and sexual assault we really did learn something new”
How much? $200 a headFee for service training by NAPCAN includes:
• 2 days training – working through all the activities, practising skills and learning how to handle challenges
• Information on how to get started
• Examples of how Love Bites is run in a school
• A Love Bites manual (1 per service)
• Preparation and liaison
• Dedicated 4 hours follow up support
Who is NAPCAN?
NAPCAN (National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect) was co-founded in 1987 by Rosemary Sinclair AO and Christine Stewart OAM.
Since then NAPCAN has made a significant contribution to the safety and wellbeing of Australia's children and young people by raising public awareness of child abuse and neglect and its impacts, and by developing and promoting effective prevention strategies and programs
and fo for
Pre-trialled program and well-credentialled - used throughout Australia
Dedicated organisation focussing on the issue of domestic and family violence
Emphasises proper training of presenters
School curriculums are hard to “get into” – Zonta and NAPCAN are outsiders
Training one cohort of students in a school does not guarantee the next year’s program
For Zontians without an background in the area, it is a very hands-off project
Results so far:
7 schools planning a Love Bites program in their school, subsidised by our club
• Flagstone High• Shailer Park• Rochedale • Windaroo• Springwood• Beaudesert• Beenleigh
+ planned facilitator training in April for around 20 prospective facilitators
Cost?
$7700 paid to NAPCAN so far, and a further $10,000 has been budgeted for 2015 – 2016 Zonta year.
NEW IDEA????
This coming year, we are looking at producing a YouTube video – to give NAPCAN a multimedia promotional tool to recruit• more schools• more sponsoring clubs like Zonta• more prospective facilitators
