    THE SERVICE LEARNING REFLECTIONFRAMEWORK

    The Service Learning Project follows the APPLE model

    A) Analysis of Needs. This portion has been done by bothteachers at CTSS and trainers from AKLTG.

    B) Preparation and Planning- The preparation of the project hasbeen done by the organization of resources and by finalizingthe exact details of what is to be done during the process ofthe Service itself.

    C) Lead. In Lead, participants go on to organize the project andwill be taught that leading a project requires them to modelthe way, be proactive and flexible and align themselves to thepurpose of the project. Before the project, facilitators will leadthe groups in framing the participants in the right way. Theywill have to answer the following questions in their bookletfirst-

    A) Goal and Objective Setting

    B) How do I know I have succeeded?

    C) Why am I here?

    D) What difference do I want to make

    D) Evaluate. In the post-evaluation and after action review andpost-activity reflection will be conducted. In Part 1 of the process,teams will be given a flip chart which has two columns that is titledGems and Opportunities. They will have to fill out what theytaught went well, the positives from the experience under Gemsand they will have to write down the things that could be improvedfrom the project under the column Opportunities.

    After that, there will be pieces of flip chart paper hung on the wall.On each piece of paper is a question that each participant will have

    to answer. Each participant will be given a post-it note to write theiranswers in and will then have to post it up on the respective flip-chart papers. The questions are as follows :

    1) Did I achieve my goals?

    2) How do I feel about it ?

    3) What was the most valuable thing you have learnt about yourproject? Why was it valuable?

    4) What did you learn from the people you connected with in thisproject? What have they learnt from you?

    5) How do you think differently about your class after thisproject?

    6) What did you learn about this project that you can apply toyour life?

    After they have completed the activity, they will be given time towalk around and take notice of what their friends have written.

    The final segment will be a facilitated debrief that will be done bythe coaches where participants share their feelings, emotions,thoughts and lessons they have learnt with one another. Thefacilitator will follow the following framework:

    Experience

    Refers to the conduct of the service itself, taking stock of the wholeprocess.

    Describe

    This is where the facilitator will give his or her observations and askthe question , Did you notice?

    Interpret

    This is where the facilitator prods the group to seek meaning,purpose and rationale and ask the question Why do you think thathappened? as well as How did you feel about it?

    Generalize

    This is where the facilitator seeks to empower and internalize thelearning by asking the question Does this happen in your life, andWhy The facilitator will help the participants to make sense of theexperience by connecting and linking the experience to situations ineveryday life. This is where the facilitator will share a piece ofhimself or herself by sharing his or her own reflections in the

    process of the service learning.

    Apply

    This is where the facilitator helps the participants to summarize thelearning and asks the question How can you apply this to yourlife? or Has what you learnt inspired you to make a change in yourlife> and How?
