Established in 1853, New York Central operated nearly 27,000 miles of track throughout the Great Lakes region at the height of its operations. Originally built in 1941, it was rebuilt into a X44B class boxcar in the 1960s and was used for general service. PRR was one of the largest Class 1 railroads until the 1968 merger with NYC to form Penn Central.

This 40’ standard box car with single door and no roofwalk is green with yellow lettering and runs on Betten-dorf trucks. Built in the late 1940s and painted box car red, it was rebuilt in 1974 and repainted dark green. It was part of the advertisement in promotion of the “Take Stock in America” campaign, receiving the “Savings Bonds and Freedom” herald prior to the 1976 bicentennial.

Built by Thrall for Burlington Northern in 1975, this bulkhead flat was obtained by BNSF in the merger of 1995, and repainted. With a 263,000-pound gross rail load, it is often used in the shipment of struc-tural commodities such as steel pipes.
