Because most are grown in small quantities they offer important opportunities for small farmers. Oriental vegetables are known by a variety of names, due to different languages and dialects. This makes locating and sharing information about them difficult. This glossary will help farmers, farm advisors, researchers, marketers, and consumers identify these vegetables. The glossary is arranged alphabetically by the English name for each vegetable, followed by botanical and family names, Hmong, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Vietnamese names. Many of the Chinese names are followed by an (M) or a (C) to indicate that the name is either Mandarin or Cantonese. These names are not all inclusive. We hope to expand upon and improve the glossary in the future. Please contact the Small Farm Center if you have additions or suggestions.
