Taking an Inward Look
As we enter into these Days of Awe, we prepare ourselves by taking a cheshbon ha-nefesh, or an “inventory of the soul.” An inventory of the soul means that we take a meaningful look inwards to account for who we are and what we have become. If you were to make a list of all the characteristics that you would like to be a part of you, what would they be? It’s very likely a lot of us would select the same attributes. We want to be patient, loving to those who love us, fair in our dealings, less angry when we get upset. Perhaps others would select wanting to spend more time with their family, spending less time at work, learning how not to let the little things agitate us so much. None of us are perfect. And while we can each make a list of our own cheshbon ha-nefesh, fulfilling our earnest pledges to act and think differently throughout the year is indeed a daunting task. In fact, if we truly made a list of everything we would like to change about ourselves heading into these High Holidays, and set out to fulfill those pledges to change, we would become a different person, unrecognizable to our family and friends.
God designed us in such a way that we each have flaws. We are not perfect, nor can we ever become perfect. But that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t always try to perfect ourselves, even though we know we will fall short in some, if not many, areas. However, one brings joy into his or her life by going through the process of taking an inventory of the soul, and pledging to wholeheartedly try our best to improve those aspects of our life wherein we fall short. We become better people simply by knowing that we have our limitations, and that we are going to try to better ourselves and the world that we live in. That process, and that level of intimate introspection, is God-inspired, and is both enlightening and fulfilling. Ultimately, by bringing God into the process of self-reflection, we bring joy and happiness into our hearts. G'mar Hatimah Tovah - May You Be Sealed for a Good Year in the Book of Life! Temple Beth Torah Shalom September/October 2014 Issue
What an extraordinary time for Temple Beth Torah! As we start our New Year, we welcome Rabbi Andrew Rosenkranz and his family as well as many other new families to our congregation. The excitement is palpable and I am feeling renewed, both physically and spiritually. Our community has been on a journey for thirty-six years and it seems to me that we are about to witness some monumental shifts that will only send us soaring. ! I am beyond thrilled to be working with my friend and colleague. Rabbi and I were students together at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and our friendship, in its fourteenth year, has continued to build as we have raised our families together here in South Florida. I
know that you, our congregational family, will immediately feel the warmth that emanates from both Rabbi Andrew and Rabbi Erica Rosenkranz. How blessed we are! ! I am also excited to be starting our Bar/Bat Mitzvah season. Our students have been working hard, even while away at camp, and are very much looking forward to taking their place as adults in our community. Please come support them and celebrate Shabbat with all of us. It would brighten the smiles of both of your clergy to see you on a Saturday morning, for a kehillah kedoshah, a sacred community, is enhanced by the participation of us all through study, prayer and acts of loving kindness. As we head into the Yamim Nora’im, the Days of Awe, let us each uncover the spark of God that exists within ourselves so that, together, we can bring the very best of us as we prepare to face the Source of Life. May the coming year strengthen our bonds with each other and may we all approach 5775 with a sense of purpose and renewed commitment to our nuclear families as well as our shared Temple Beth Torah family. !B’ahavah v’shalom, !Cantor Carrie Barry !!!!!

The new school year is off to a great start! We begin the year with an enrollment of more than 130 children! Thanks to the yeoman efforts of our preschool staff (27 strong), the children are settling into their classroom routines, making new friends,
and exploring the different learning centers set up in each classroom. Each morning our children enter the building full of smiles and energy ready to begin a new school day. The 2014-2015 school year will be highlighted by the introduction of new staff, the enhancement of our outdoor spaces, and the debut of our school wide music program. Look for more creative social and fundraising events, and the return of the popular Music Together© Program. During this school year we will also revisit and refine all aspects of our preschool program in anticipation of next year’s reaccreditation site visit by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). ! Our annual back to school Parent Orientation/Curriculum Night was held on August 21. We welcomed over 150 preschool parents who were eager to learn about our school’s mission, philosophy, goals, programs and curriculum. This was also an early opportunity for the parents to meet Rabbi Rosenkranz, and other Temple and board representatives. As always, a highlight of the evening was when the parents visited their child’s classroom to meet with the teachers for the first time. On August 22, we held Child Visitation, a time when the children come to school for a brief visit in order to become acquainted with their teachers, classroom and friends. !
The 2, 3 and 4 year old classes all kick off the year with curriculum units on self and family. Our younger children will create hand print collages and learn songs and finger plays centered on the theme of family. At the same time, our PreK children create “All About Me” books and family trees. At the year’s beginning, all of the children decorate Kippot which they wear every Friday morning when we welcome Shabbat in the preschool. Each week a different child in each class is the designated Ema or Abba. That child’s family joins the class to light candles, say prayers and eat challah. Continued on Page 25. !

Dear Temple Beth Torah Family,!!So many new beginnings at a time when we all have a chance to celebrate a new year, be sincerely introspective, have the opportunity to say we are sorry to those whom we may have hurt, and hear the sounds of the shofar! I am sharing with you the lyrics to a song by The Fountainheads, and I hope you will search out their video on youtube to see them perform this awesome song:!!Tekia, shevarim, terua x2 (sounds of the shofar)!A new year rising!A new beginning!Lift your head up, turn yourself ‘round, the world is spinning!Feel the magic of a new day!Open your heart to a fresh start, send your fears away! You’ve made mistakes- you feel it!You’ve got what it takes – believe it!Any wrong can be made right!Just forgive you need not fight!Shana tova u Metuka – its Rosh Hashana (Good and sweet year)!Shana tova, u’metuka!Dip your apple in the honey, on Rosh Hashana!
! ! ! ! It’s Rosh Hashana!!It's a beautiful coincidence that we also begin a new school year during this season. What an opportune time to enjoy the teaching of the birth of our world at the same time that we have a new Kindergarten class, the birth of their Jewish education. I would like to welcome not only our newest students in Kindergarten but all students who will be a part our school family. We promise you a year filled with new experiences, new interpretations of treasured texts, music to both touch you spiritually and fill you with ruach and opportunities to experience the beauty of Judaism.!!Our staff is comprised of extremely talented, dedicated and loving teachers, including Rabbi Rosenkranz and Cantor Barry:!!Kindergarten: Judy Quinn! ! ! First Grade: Sigal Carmel & Samantha Lent!Second Grade: Joann Barr!! ! Third Grade: Linda Schreier!Fourth Grade: Ina Tessenholtz! ! Fifth Grade: Renee Seal & Gerri Becker!Sixth Grade: Randi Tessler and Lori Spilfogel!Seventh Grade & #Hineini: Robyn Fleming & Meredith Hirschberg!Confirmation: Rabbi Rosenkranz! ! Administrative Assistant: Cathy Hurst!!As we all dip apples in honey on Rosh Hashanah, become introspective on Yom Kippur, welcome guests into our sukkah on Sukkot, and dance with the Torah on Simhat Torah, let us all renew our commitment to what we teach our children about everyone being created in the image of God and begin a new year together in atonement and celebration in our spiritual home.!!B'Shalom,!!Meredith Hirschberg!Interim Director of Religious School!!!!

My friends, it is with great joy that, as of August 1st, we have welcomed our new Rabbi! Everyone needs a place to celebrate; everyone needs a place to grow; everyone needs a place to mourn. This is our place, our home, for every aspect of our Jewish lives. Rabbi Rosenkranz will help strengthen our temple community, for our friends, for our families, and for ourselves. Let's get to know him and help the entire Rosenkranz family feel welcome! !As we leave summer behind and look towards the High Holy Days and the new year, I want to be sure to express my gratitude to the rest of our professional staff for their hard work all year long; Cantor Barry, Meredith Hirschberg, Sandy Wilensky, Heather Weisbrod, Lois Pesaturo, Beth Tanner, Annette Muniz, Sharon Lowenstein, and Cathy Hurst make up the dedicated team who work diligently to support Temple Beth Torah. Thank you also to our excellent Religious School and Preschool faculty, a group of specialists dedicated to passing along Jewish wisdom and values to the next generation. !!We all owe our thanks to our past and current Lay Leadership, who work tirelessly both on and off our Board of Trustees, making tough, defining decisions every day to keep our temple moving forward. Toda Raba to the countless volunteers who work in sacred partnership with our professionals to create and support all of the meaningful activities offered here.!!In this new year, now with Rabbi Rosenkranz at the helm, we will continue to focus on the needs of our congregation. We are a community and we need to function as such. We need to help those who are struggling to maintain their membership and we need to educate all of our children. We need to take care of our facility and provide for the safety of all who enter it. We cannot meet all the needs of our community without everyone's involvement. Please consider the ways in which you can participate, whether through your time, your expertise, or your financial support. In Pirkei Avot we read, “Do not separate yourself from your community.” Our community is our strength! !B'Shalom, Sara Marcus !

Dear Temple Beth Torah Mishpachah,
On May 4, 2014 the “TBT Family of Families” came together to help one of our own and we had fun as well. To assist the Shana Sasko Benefit Fund Temple Beth Torah hosted a Family Barbecue Day in which through dona>ons and sale of “Team Shana” t-‐shirt, key rings and bracelets, we raised well over $5,500.00 to help with the medical costs.
I have known Shana since she moved with her family to Wellington from New York when she was 10 years old. Shana and my daughter Sara became fast friends when they met in Religious School at Temple Beth Torah. Over the years while friends, ideas and goals may have changed, their friendship has endured. This disease Shana is figh>ng is a very aggressive and scary one but with her self-‐determina>on, family and friends, I remain confident she will beat it!
I want to add a special thank you to those that worked hard to help put on the event. Those individuals included Lu Powell, Julie Dimaiwat, Marcia Weber, Cantor Carrie Barry, Susan Brawer and Sara Cordes. Without the hard work of the Brotherhood, we would not have had the delicious hot dogs and hamburgers and the Sisterhood and Membership Commidee did an amazing job with the dessert sale.
Temple Beth Torah has been referred to as a “Family of Families” and clearly the way everyone came together to support Shana and the en>re Sasko family is overwhelming. It shows us all how life can easily take twists and turns that we do not plan. Family, in its many shapes and forms, is what will always be a steady force of comfort and support to all of us as we con>nue on life’s path.
If you are interested in purchasing a t-‐shirt ($15), key chain ($5), or bracelet ($5), please contact me by leaving a message at the temple office. Dona>ons are s>ll being accepted at the temple, and will be forwarded to the Sasko Family.

!At 11:00 a.m., the entire school gathers in the social hall for an inspiring Shabbat-program, geared to
the preschoolers, led on different weeks by Rabbi Rosenkranz, Cantor Barry. and Meredith Hirschberg (our music teacher). If you’re ever in the building on Friday mornings, do stop by to join the fun. Just keep an ear peeled for the Shabbat Rock Concert! !
In addition to exploring the new classroom materials, the children and staff have been very busy during the opening weeks of school preparing for the holidays. The children will be excited by our annual visit from The Shofar Factory, a hands-on workshop which teaches the children how shofars are made. All our preschoolers are given the opportunity to touch a variety of animal horns and learn the difference between kosher and non-kosher animals. Pictures of the Shofar Factory event will be displayed throughout the preschool hallways. The children will welcome a sweet Jewish New Year with apples and honey in the classrooms. !
The month of October will be highlighted by the preschool celebrations of Sukkot and Simchat Torah. The children love the excitement of making decorations and classroom Sukkahs, eating lunch in the Temple Sukkah and planning and participating in our very own Torah parade. !
We are very proud of our tradition of parent participation in the preschool and are looking forward to continued involvement from our families. Parents are encouraged to get involved on all levels; from joining a committee, to volunteering in the classrooms. The VPO (Volunteer Parent Organization), co-chaired by Stefanie Raifman and Alyse Bessell kicked off the school year with a Back to School Breakfast on the very first day of preschool. This was a wonderful opportunity for new and returning parents to socialize with each other and to sign up for our many social and fundraising activities for the year. We are very grateful to the many families who are already participating in Our Adopt-a-Class Fundraiser. The contributions received provide additional classroom materials and equipment from our teacher “Wish Lists.” !
Our annual Family Fun Day event will take place on Sunday, October 26, from 4-6pm. Save the date for this fun filled event sponsored by the Volunteer Parent Organization (VPO). !
Our summer enrichment camp was a blast! Our total enrollment was 79 children, ranging in age from very young 2 year olds all the way to 6 year olds. The lively weekly themes, exciting entertainment and outdoor water play equipment provided hours of fun both indoors and out! Our summer culminated with an Amusement Park week filled with games, snacks, a bounce house, face painting, balloons, and a special camp-wide lunch. Camp Supervisor Sharon Lowenstein, Annette Muniz, our outstanding camp teachers, and record numbers of teen volunteers did an amazing job this summer ensuring the health, safety and enjoyment of every child. Thanks for a job well done! !
On behalf of the entire preschool staff and my family, I wish you a happy, healthy new year! L’Shanah Tovah, ! Sandy Wilensky Director !!

TiBToFTY News
This article was written by Temple Beth Torah member Rachel Gerardi on her summer Israel experience. This summer I was able to go to Israel on Alexander Muss’s High School in Israel program. I had the opportunity to earn three academic credits while I learned Jewish history from the very beginning of time at the actual historical sites. Studying history turned into living it and making it when Israel declared war on Gaza and Operation Protective Edge was born. Travel became limited and bomb sirens and shelters became our new reality. The sirens could go off at any time throughout the duration of the day and indeed they did. Whether it was three in the morning abruptly awaking you from your slumber or five in the afternoon in the middle of rinsing the shampoo out of your hair in the shower you had 15 seconds to a minute to be in the bomb shelter. We would sing songs and take silly videos while in the shelter to make the time pass quickly. But, day after day, siren after siren you never really get used to it. Although this was my reality I found ways to make the best out of the situation. Seeing the Iron Dome in action was truly amazing and in some cases we even stalled running to the shelter because we were struck in awe watching the Dome hit the missiles so precisely right on target. It was a strange feeling that I never once questioned my safety with all of my friends and family’s “Stay safe” texts flooding through my phone. My Israeli counselors were all reservists and not even 12 hours after our plane took off was called back into war. Our time in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem was very limited because they were target areas, but the memories we made in our dorm were some of the best memories that I took home with me from my trip. Overall, It wasn’t the experience that I was expecting to have but I wouldn’t of rather had any other. I was able to see how Israeli’s really live and really react to being surrounded by people who want their existence and homeland annihilated. My love for Israel and connection to Judaism is one that could have never been developed without being in the country in such a crisis. Israel is such a miraculous and breathtaking place and I hope that all of those who haven’t yet visited have an opportunity to go and witness its beauty first hand.

THE TRIP I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD GO ON…BUT DID! Written by Temple Beth Torah Teen Genna Barashick, age 16
This summer I had an experience of a lifetime! I traveled to Israel with 17 other teens from Palm Beach and Martin County on the Federation program Bonim Chaim, which means, “building life.” Bonim Chaim is the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County’s three week long teen mission trip to Israel through the Jewish Teen Initiative (JTI). The 18 of us plus 4 chaperones enjoyed all the state of Israel had to offer and more! I’ve always been proud to be Jewish but after my experience in Israel, I feel even more connected to my Judaism. Now, when people talk about Israel, I can picture the beautiful country and my new Israeli friends. The feeling of being in Israel is hard to explain. As I tell family and friends, “I can not put it into words. You just have to be there to take in the beautiful sights, smells and sounds.” There is a feeling of comfort being in your homeland despite all the distress and hatred from surrounding countries. Knowing that almost everyone around you is Jewish really stood out to me. Nowhere else in the world can one experience that feeling other than in Israel! When a teen from our area chooses to be part of Bonin Chaim, he/she will experience riding camels, talking to the Bedouin people about their life and culture and sleeping in the desert. Climbing to the top of Masada before sunrise and standing upon the mountaintop taking in the magnificent site. The feeling was amazing being where our ancestors fought so hard for our freedom. Hiking, floating in the Dead Sea and bargaining at the markets filled many of the days. We visited museums, historical sites and toured cities such as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa. We also volunteered with Israeli Ethiopian teens and had leadership opportunities, as well. Celebrating Shabbat at the Kotel with our Israeli friends was a memory I cherish. Shabbat in Israel is unique as most of the local businesses close and it is a day of rest for all. I truly enjoyed my Shabbat celebrations and their meaning while I was in Israel. To me, staying in the TZAHAR Region (Tzfat, Hazor HaGlilit and Rosh Pina), which is the Federation’s Partnership 2GETHER region/sister city was the most memorable part of the trip. I got to experience firsthand life in Israel with a teen and her family. We participated together for the week as one group of about 40 American and Israeli teens. I feel so connected to my teen host, Ron and know that I have a home in Israel. Each host family has a teen that will travel here for a week to experience life in the United States. I can’t wait to host Ron and participate with the group when the Israeli teens travel here this coming December. I love having friendships in the homeland that will last a lifetime! Go to Israel on Bonin Chain and experience Israel with teens your own age. Then, continue with the program here when they get to visit you and experience life with American teens. This amazing opportunity awaits you in our local community.

Time for Memorial !As we approach the Days of Awe, many of us begin to think about our close family and friends who are no longer with us, but once blessed us by being such an important part of our lives. Judaism considers it a mitzvah to visit the place where our loved ones are buried in order to pay our respects and to keep their memories alive. Of course, the world in which we live in today does not allow us to physically visit our loved ones. Therefore, Temple Beth Torah has created a way in which you can instead remember your loved ones in a sesng that is both moving and meaningful. During our “Time for Memorial,” we invite you to come to the synagogue and, before the open Ark, light a candle for your beloved, say the Mourner’s Kaddish, and offer personal prayers. Accordingly, we have an opportunity for you and your family to light candles and offer prayers for those who have passed on. This is a formal >me for personal reflec>on and recalling blessed memories of the departed. !Date: September 23, 2014 !Time: any>me between 10:00am and 6:00pm !Place: Temple Beth Torah Sanctuary
