21st Annual Richard Teague Meet Ohio AMC’s Richard Teague Meet turned 21 this year and what a birthday party we had. Once again, the turnout was quite respectable. Fifty five cars registered plus many more non-registered as area AMCers made the trip to Dublin, Ohio for the three day show weekend. The event kicked off on Friday evening with a cruise-in sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation. We estimate 700 cars present. There was a good mix of stock restored cars with Street Rods on this fun night out. As always, the group awarded 6 ft trophies and en-tertained us with a performance by Mike Albert—Ohio’s best “Elvis” show. Saturday was the multi-marque judged show day with about 500 cars on the field. Our AMC area displayed 30+ cars with a good assortment present. Judging by our club got off to a rocky start (a little late with no shortage of confusion), but we pulled together at the end and presented our five class winners to the officials. Phil Dirt and the Dozers per-formed that evening. It is unfortunate we are only allowed five classes as it is very hard to divide the cars into five narrow groups, but we ended up with the following: 58 - 69 AMC, stock AMX 68 - 70, Javelin stock, 70 - up AMC, AMX non– stock. We were required to judge the Founda-tion’s way using a point deduction system. We picked our top five plus Best of Show and got them lined up for the victory parade past the judge’s stand. We applauded our winners loudly and we hope they enjoyed the experience. The Richard Teague show on Sunday exhibited a diverse group of cars with a high degree of quality among them. Out of fifty five registered cars, we awarded 46 trophies with a breakdown as follows: 13 Bronze, 14 Silver, 11 Gold, plus 8 Best of Class. Congratula-tions to our winners. We are proud to have so many high quality cars at our show. This year, our show committee decided to arrange the show field a little differently from the past several years by placing most of the classes on the grass and under the shade trees. Non-stock cars were kept on the blacktop because of problems negotiating the curb “hop” necessitated by our lack of a ramp. We do believe most people liked this set up and we’ll most likely do it the same way next year. Many thanks go out to our volunteer judges who did a great job with the eight classes presented to them. I believe our eight groups of judges were accurate overall in their judging. There is sometimes a participant who believes he or she should have re-ceived a higher award. Remember, it only takes one point to make the difference. A small flaw like not vacuuming the carpet, or leaving some grease under the hood can make the difference between a bronze or silver award. Cleaning your car is the one thing that re-quires you to spend very little money, but can net you a higher award. I would also like to thank our DJ, Roger Bishop, and our food vendors. Without them, the show would be much less enjoyable. We conclude by wishing our show a happy 21st birthday, and we wish Richard Teague were still around to see it. I think he would be proud of us. Thanks to all who attended, for without you there would be no show. See you again next year for the 22nd annual event. Casey McGowan Events Chairman

KENOSHA 2002 THE EVENT OF THE CENTURY

by: Casey McGowan The largest AMC car show since the introduction of the first mass produced Rambler in 1902 was held in Kenosha, Wisconsin July 22 - 26, 2002. The occasion marked and celebrated the 100th year since the first Rambler appeared on the dirt streets of America. I will not go through the entire history of Rambler, Jeffrey, Nash, Hudson and AMC at this time, but I can give you the story of the first Rambler, the beginnings of the 100 year period we are celebrating. Thomas B. Jeffrey, English - born inventor, was for many years prior to 1902 one of the leading U.S. manufacturers of bicycles bearing the Rambler name. Jeffrey settled in Chicago in 1874 and within a year, had invented the railroad velocipede. He also invented the clincher tire in the 1880’s. Jeffrey built bicycles in Chicago from 1879 to 1899, when the Sterling Bicycle Co. factory in Kenosha was bought as a place to build automobiles. Tho-mas and his son, Charles, began experimenting with various “hydro-carbon” carriages. The first experimental models featured steering wheels and front mounted engines. These were considered “too radical”, so when the first 1902 Rambler Model C was offered for sale in the spring of 1902, they were conventional rear-mounted, tiller driven automobiles. The Rambler was an instant success. In 1902, the Kenosha factory turned out 1500 vehicles to make Rambler the world’s second mass-produced car, a year after Oldsmobile, and a year ahead of Ford. In 1904, a line of two-cylinder Ramblers was introduced...with steering wheels and front mounted engines. By 1905, the original 6000 square feet Sterling building had ex-panded to 14 acres, and the company advertised it had the “largest automobile plant in the world”. Jeffrey’s success was attributed not only to sound engineering and continued pro-gress, but to imaginative promotion as well. In 1908, early day motorists were aided by road signs installed by Rambler dealers at rural intersections across the nation. The first such markers were installed in Wisconsin and Illinois. Charles Jeffrey, Thomas’ son, was the designer and builder of the Rambler cars beginning with the 1902 model and upon his father’s death in 1910, decided to take the company public. The Jeffrey Company was in-corporated with stock of three million dollars. The Jeffrey name was given to the car in 1914 and lasted midway into 1917 when Charles Nash purchased the company and changed its name to reflect his own. Nash Motor Car built cars and trucks in Kenosha for 40 years; actually 37 years, because AMC built the Nash during its last 3 years of exis-tence. The Rambler car was a respected brand and sold well. Production between 1902 and 1913 varied from 1,500 - 4,435 cars each year. The Rambler name was revived by Nash in 1950 as the name of their new small car that kicked off the prosperous period of AMC history that reached its peak in 1961—by capturing the title of America’s 4th best sell-ing car displacing Plymouth for a while. On Wednesday, April 25, 1962, AMC celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the Ram-bler Marquee. Early in this year, AMC President and Board Chairman, George Romney, re-signed to run for Governor of Michigan. Elected to succeed him were Richard Cross as Chairman and Roy Abernathy as President. Both Cross and Abernathy, along with other top executives of American Motors attended a civic dinner commemorating Rambler’s 60th Anniversary on this night in Kenosha.

7

In addition to Nash’s 37 years of production Kenosha, AMC racked up 34 years of production in the city of Kenosha. Today, the car building legacy continues with the Chrys-ler Engine Plant manned by members of Local 72/United Auto Workers. As you can see, Kenosha was a manufacturing hub for all of these evolving car companies. The week of July 22 - 26, the city of Kenosha celebrated the centennial of the “Rambler” automobile which was built in Kenosha from 1902 - 1914 and 1950 - 1969. The week long event was sponsored by the City of Kenosha with much help from AMO’s Mike Spangler and Nash Club historian Vince Ruffalo. Credit must also go to all the car clubs that filled the show field on Saturday. Second in importance to the show itself was the opening of the Rambler Legacy Gallery and the parade to support the dedication ceremony. The car portion of the museum held about 12 cars of AMC significance as well as photos of the factory and other related memorabilia on the walls. The Gallery was nicely done and appreciated by all who took the tour through it. However, most people agree this should only be a beginning, because we see a proper gallery as one housing one hundred or more cars within its walls. Sadly, it does not appear the City of Kenosha has the will to accomplish this...it will have to be done by private concerns. We can only hope, someday AMC fans will have a sizeable museum with rotating “on loan” cars we can tour once a year, and visitors to Kenosha can visit all year long. The parade following the dedication ceremony was limited to 49 cars. Each partici-pating National Car Club was asked to provide entries. The parade began at the Legacy Gallery, wound through downtown Kenosha and ended at Pennoyer Park’s band shell where music was provided by a local band “Class of ‘62”. Friday was swap meet day. OAMC was represented by Christine McGowan, offer-ing our club store merchandise under our red, white and blue tent. She should be com-mended for bringing in an amount equal to half our annual expenditures during this one day of sales. The swap meet was large and vendors reportedly did quite well. Show day on Saturday surpassed previous estimates as approximately 1200 AMCs filled the huge show-field. Christine and myself shot a video of the show-field which took a tiring 2 hours. Many photos were taken by other club members. There were so many rare cars to be seen at the show and at the week-long evening cruise-ins that we can’t begin to display them in the confines of this newsletter. Please check out the photos on the following page; they will give you an idea of what was to be seen at this show. Class award winners will be listed in the AMO and AMCRC National newsletters as well as club participant photos. We will recap these in our next newsletter. For all those who attended, congratulations, you were at the best AMC show of all time. See you next year in Michigan.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BANQUET

I know that it seems as though summer is barely over, but it is time to begin planning our annual banquet. This year, we have reser-vations at the Der Dutchman Restaurant, but the date is earlier. We were unable to obtain the spot for the usual December time, and the banquet is scheduled for November 9th instead. We think this is a bit early, and we are checking with the restaurant to see if there is a cancellation for a spot closer to Christmas. If there isn’t, we thought of looking into another facility for this year. The Dutch Pantry was nice, but way too small for our large group. Since most of our club members are from the Columbus Metropolitan area and parts west of the city, it might be a good idea to have the banquet somewhere out there. If anyone knows of a place that would have a room for us to use, a menu at a rea-sonable price ($15.00 or less for adults), and has the room available for the dates of De-cember 7 or 14, or is available on a Sunday - say December 8 or 15, please contact Jeff Kennedy, Richelle Dabe, or myself with this information. If it happens that we cannot secure the restaurant for another time, or cannot find another restaurant to accommodate us, we will send out flyers with the appropriate informa-tion for Der Dutchman on November 9. We plan to subsidize the club member’s dinner price as we always have in the past. It’s one way of saying “Thank You” for all the support you have given OAMC throughout the year. We have always had a great time at the banquet; there are lots of good door prizes, the food is fantastic, and we have a chance to visit with fellow AMCers one last time for the year.

Treasury Sales

We have had a great year for treasury sales. Because Kenosha was very successful, we are currently out of some of our stock. At this time we have no umbrellas, flags, or XL BAD ASS GIRL Tshirts. I have these items on order, and hopefully, we will have some in stock for the Christmas banquet. I plan on setting up a table and selling at the banquet - think

about it - a great last minute Christmas gift for your guy or gal who loves AMCs!
