Exemplify shared leadership focused on learning collaboration, accountability, and results. 2. Implement the Cycle of Effective Instruction. 3. Promote a climate in which ALL students, staff, and community are valued and respected. In addition to our school-wide goals, we are incorporating a plethora of interventions to support ALL of our subgroups. As you know, the Florida Standards Assessment starts with the Writing component on February 29. Our teachers have been working diligently all school year in making sure the students are ready to tackle this endeavor. In an effort to support our students, students will take a variety of FSA practice tests prior the actual assessments. The practice tests will provide all of our students the opportunity to orient themselves in a simulated testing situation that emulates the actual test in terms of complexity and rigor as well as sustained effort during 120 minutes. Teachers will also have a chance to grade and provide feedback to all of the students. We as a school are confident that our students will meet and beat the challenge of this state-wide assessment. It takes a village to raise and educate; therefore it is important that you too encourage your respective student(s) to do their very best! In closing, we will begin the process of visiting our future 6th grade Tigers at our feeder elementary schools and will hold our Annual 6th grade Parent Night on February 18 at 6pm in our school’s cafeteria. Teague will also be hosting our 1st Annual “Teague’s Got Talent” program on Thursday, March 3 at 6pm in the school’s cafeteria. The students and faculty are excited and we look forward to seeing the entire Teague community there Sincerely, Leon L. McCants Principal

TO SUCCEED

“Dear Teague Families, Happy New Year and I hope everyone enjoyed the Winter Break. Monday, January 4, 2016 started the 2nd semester of the academic school year and I would be remiss if I did not reiterate a few important items. Safety is and will always be our #1 priority at Teague, thus, student learning, effective instruction and collaborative efforts will always be the holistic focus as a school. COUNSELOR’S CORNER Articulation is in full effect at Teague Middle School! Our 6th and 7th grade students have had presentations on course selection and are in the process of choosing their classes for the 2016-2017 school year. Lake Brantley will be on campus the last week of January to present high school articulation to our 8th graders. The counselors will be visiting the elementary schools in February to speak with our incoming 6th graders. Lake Brantley will be holding a parent night for incoming 8th graders on Wednesday, February 3rd and Teague will be hosting a parent night for incoming 6th graders on Thursday, February 18th. Watch for more information to come on those events. As always, we appreciate your involvement in your child’s future!

JROTC The JROTC program is off to a great start already this January! The students are quickly learning drill and physical fitness lessons and are performing admirably in leadership roles. Several students are demonstrating their citizenship by assisting with the flag raising and lowering every day. Thursday practices after school are just getting underway as we prepare for competition at the end of the semester. We are again selling T-shirts so that the new students this semester will have a recognizable dress based on the New Year. T-Shirts will be navy with a light colored emblem on the front. The T-Shirts are $10.00 each and will be available beginning the week of January 19th. Uniforms are being issued starting next week. This next nine weeks will involve more text and discussion as we will be learning about flag etiquette, survival, first aid, military science and orienteering.Students helping with flag raising• Samantha Johansen• Zachary Simmons• Jordyn Gill• Andrew Johansen

The class designated as Successful Teens is a class that gives a student additional tools to improve their experience in Middle School and prepare them for their responsibilities in High School. We use the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, by Sean Covey. It is available in a pdf format and I have recommended that all of the students download it to have a copy at home. Anyone of course may buy it as well at any bookstore. One web address that make the pdf file available is:http://www.hobbsschools.net/common/pages/DisplayFile.aspx?itemId=83621 We will be learning about getting better at scheduling, taking care of our health, treating others kindly, communicating respectfully, and a deeper understanding of self and purpose in life.

SOCIAL STUDIES6th Grade World History In World History, we are continuing to study about the Ancient World. For the third quarter, we will be explore the civilizations of Ancient Greece and Rome. Students will continue to refine their writing skills in our next DBQ Project, entitled Citizenship in Athens and Rome: Which Was the Better System? Students will be analyzing historical documents, developing a claim statement, and supporting their claim with evidence from primary and secondary sources. We are looking forward to learning about these influential civilizations!

7th Grade Civics It’s hard to believe we are halfway through the year! Well, your children have been learning a great deal. Of course, we have previously analyzed the three branches of government, and third nine weeks will be all about our government. We begin with the study of the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. Our DBQ Essay will answer the question, “How Did the Constitution Guard Against Tyranny?” After that we will Analyze the Bill of Rights and Landmark Supreme Court Cases. We will also have some “informative” lessons planned for African American History Month. Your 7th Grade Civics Team: Noreen Benedetto, Amanda Neyra, Fran Rodgers, and David Brousseau.

8th Grade U.S. History Happy New Year 2016 Wishes to all parents and students from the 8th grade U.S. History teachers! We certainly wish you a prosperous and successful year. During the 3rd Nine Weeks Grading Period, the students will be learning about the following topics (this is a tentative schedule—and is subject to change): Chapter 8: “Launching a New Nation (President George Washington and President John Adams),” Chapter 9: “The Era of Thomas Jefferson,” Chapter 10: “A Changing Nation (President Andrew Jackson and Indian Removal),” Chapter 11: “North and South Take Different Paths,” Chapter 12: “An Age of Reform,” and Chapter 13: “Westward Expansion.” Advanced and PRE-AP students should have been working on the “National History Day” project. This year’s NHD theme is “Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange in History.” The website for students to use is www.nhd.org **This year’s SCPS NHD Fair will be held at Markham Woods Middle School on Saturday, February 20, 2015 from 8:00-12:00.** The next DBQ or “Document-Based Questions” Activity in PRE-AP classes will be on the Mexican War: “Was the U.S. Justified in Going to War with Mexico?” ALL classes (PRE-AP, Advanced, and Standard) will most likely be participating in the last DBQ or “Document-Based Questions” Activity on The Civil War: “What Caused the Civil War?” during the Fourth Nine Weeks Grading Period. It is extremely beneficial for ALL students to learn how to analyze and make inferences from primary and secondary sources in U.S. History. Most importantly, all 8th grade students will be registering for their high school schedule next year on JANUARY 25, 2016 in their U.S. History classes. **Parents—please review the schedule that your child creates for LBHS next year and please sign and turn in the form in a timely manner. SCIENCE6th Grade Earth/Space Science Last quarter, students learned about the layers of the earth. Students were amazed to learn that due to the processes occurring right below our feet, our earth’s crust is constantly changing! This quarter, the focus will be on the atmosphere and weather. Students are learning about the layers of the atmosphere and how they work as a system. Each layer has a job to do and they work together to keep us alive! After discussing the atmosphere, students will then investigate what causes weather.

7th Grade Life Science In Life Science, we ended Second quarter with our study of Genetics, the study of traits inherited from parents/ancestors. Many students were quite amazed at being able to determine the genotype (gene allele combinations) they and their family members had from observing their phenotype (what the trait looked like in their family). This quarter we are studying the Human Body, Infectious Diseases, and Evolution. During the Human Body unit, students will be observing the inside of a femur, testing the fatigue level of their muscles, and testing their lung capacity. We will also be dissecting frogs as a final activity in our study. The advanced/gifted students will be working on a multi-element project based on one of the systems of the body- due Feb. 25.

8th Grade Physical Science In Physical Science, we ended the 2nd quarter by finishing off our physics unit. Students learned about forces, motion, and energy. One of the highlights of our semester was working with a group form the UCF Engineering program to launch rockets that the students made themselves! This quarter, we will be moving into the world of chemistry! Students will be learning about atoms, elements, how the periodic table is organized and the part they’re looking forward to the most, chemical reactions. Also during this quarter, all 8th grade classes will be participating in Throwback Thursdays! Each Thursday, students will be working together to review select topics from 6th and 7th grade in order to prepare for the SSA.

Gifted and Science Fair Students in our gifted classes will continue to be challenged by working in cooperative groups during labs and hands-on activities to research, investigate and solve problems. During December, Science Night hosted many amazing student projects from all grades. Student projects showed a wide range of interests and some really interesting experiments too. Some of the student projects were chosen to compete in the Regional Science Fair which will be held on Saturday, February 13th at Seminole Town Center in Sanford. All are invited to come out and show our students their support. They are making Teague proud!

6th Grade Math Throughout 3rd quarter our students are learning about Equations and Expressions. After developing an understanding of equations, the students will be able to reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. Also, our students will learn how to represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables. As always, we welcome parents continued support in making sure students have all the classroom supplies, homework and bellwork are completed daily, students study for their tests/quizzes, and students access various online resources such as: KhanAcademy, Learnzillion, and the online textbook. Skyward is a great resource for parents to monitor their children’s grades and outstanding assignments. We will be starting our preparations for the District Math competition during this quarter. Information and details are to follow. If you would like to have a parent\teacher conference, please contact Ruth Consolato at (407) 320-1554 to schedule an appointment. We look forward to working together to provide our students with a quality education.

6th Grade Advanced Math In the 3rd Quarter are focus will be on: Integer Operations, Geometry, and Statistics. During the 2nd quarter of the academic year, students completed two math projects on “AMPLIFY.” Amplify connects math to real world problem, which makes math relevant to daily life. The amplify project, “Don’t Let the Crane Tip” required students to model two different ways that a tower crane can be positioned. They then evaluated the models by comparing them to an actual crane. They also had to write an inequality that can be used to assess safe crate operations on a construction site. In the second amplify project “Powering Wattsbury” students used coordinate plane to choose a location for an electrical substation. Students completed the projects using cooperative structures to discuss the problems and find solutions. The structures required our students to share their ideas, explain their reasoning, show respect for their classmates’ opinion, and be good listeners. In the 3rd quarter, students will also complete an amplify project: “Straw Rockets.” This project provides opportunities for students to interpret and compare data and distributions in dot plots and select statistical measures to make decisions in scoring a hot air balloon beanbag drop competition. We expect that this project will generate excitement amongst our students while reinforcing their understanding of statistical variability. As always, we welcome parents continued support in making sure that homework and bellwork are completed daily, students study for their tests/quizzes, and students access various online resources such as: KhanAcademy, Learnzillion, and the online textbook. Skyward is a great resource for parents to monitor their children’s grades and outstanding assignments. If you would like to have a parent\teacher conference, please contact Ruth Consolato at (407) 320-1554 to schedule an appointment. We look forward to working together to provide our students with a quality education.

7th Grade Math Students in 7th grade math continue to work hard this school year. In addition to learning about equations students have also been introduced to inequalities. In our upcoming unit students can expect to learn about scale drawings, similar figures, constructions, cross sections, angles, circumference, area and a few other topics. Students should continue to copy down the common board in their planners and make sure they are turning in all of their assignments on time.

8th Grade Pre-Algebra The third quarter in pre-algebra brings us to a new topic: Geometry. Students will learn about angle relationships, polygons, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Within these geometry skills, students will apply what they have learned about writing and solving equations to solve problems related to angles and polygons. Students are encouraged to remain focused for the remainder of the school year and to make sure they are completing all of their assignments. If students find themselves struggling they are encouraged to seek assistance early on.

Algebra Students in algebra have been working hard to master concepts about systems of equations and exponential functions. Topics to be covered in the 3rd nine weeks will include statistics and data, polynomial expressions and equations, and functions and modeling. As we progress this quarter it is crucial that students remain focused in class and consistent in completing all assignments. Students should come to class everyday ready to learn and ready to succeed by having their notes, calculator, pencil, and homework. As always, one of the best resources that students have available to them is Algebra Nation. Students can access Algebra Nation through ePassport from any computer with internet access. Algebra Nation has videos and practice tests for every algebra standards. There is also an “Algebra Wall.” Similar to a Facebook wall, the Algebra Wall is a safe place where students can post questions and receive help from students around the state and Algebra Nation Study Experts. Students are encouraged to use site as a resource for additional help outside of class.

Geometry Geometry students are off to another great start this quarter. Students have been learning about similarity transformations. Students should be able to describe a sequence of similarity transformations that would map one figure onto another. In the upcoming weeks students will also be learning about the special properties of parallelograms, kites and trapezoids. In addition to those topics students will derive formulas for different figures, use geometry to solve design problems, and use trigonometric ratios to solve real world problems. Students are encouraged to remain focused for the remainder of the school year and to make sure they are completing all of their assignments. If students find themselves struggling they are encouraged to seek assistance early on.

LANGUAGE ARTS6th Grade Language Arts This semester, 6th graders are focused analyzing text evidence and writing multiple paragraph essays on a variety of topics. All students are working towards refining their writing skills and providing clear coherent arguments in essays that are supported by text evidence. This might sound like a daunting task, but 6th graders don’t quit easily! At the start of this semester, students worked on completing a Spelling Bee in class. These past couple of days have been full of work at home and in the classroom in preparation for our class Spelling Bee. The competition was heated and winners from each class are now moving on to the final rounds. Collectively, all students and teachers are looking forward to this fresh start at the beginning of the new semester and the many opportunities ahead to grow and learn together. Together we are starting with the bar set high and a lot of enthusiasm for what this semester will bring. As always, it is a pleasure to work with your students. Regards, the 6th Grade Language Arts Team

7th Grade Language ArtsJanuary Highlights• Spelling Bee – Congratulations to our 7th grade

classroom winners. They represented their grade level in the school – wide spelling bee which was held on Thursday, January 21, 2016. The first place winner was Jonathan Gerard (7th grade/Mrs. Clarke-Treasurer Class). The second place winner was Chayll Acoba (7th grade/Mrs. Beck).

• Close Reading – Students will read a literary text pertaining to the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, entitled, “from The Uprising,” and students will focus on central idea and theme. In addition, students will write an objective summary for this piece.

March Highlights• Spring Break is scheduled the week of March

21st through March 25, 2016.

8th Grade Language Arts The eighth grade ELA train is moving full steam ahead! Students are analyzing how an author’s use of word choice, text structure, dialogue, and figurative and sensory language impact a reader’s understanding of the text and topic. In addition, students are continuing to perfect their writer’s craft regarding informative and argumentative essay writing by exploring the topic of work, and examining varying viewpoints about the pros and cons of labor. Classes have been reading excerpts from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and other writings by Mark Twain. We are practicing how to: unpack a writing prompt, analyze informative and argumentative text, weigh the strengths and weaknesses of an author’s evidence, and connect and elaborate on the key ideas and details presented in multiple texts. While a writing task can appear “laborious” at times, continued effort in the pursuit of excellence will help our students achieve success. Please continue to encourage your child to try his or her best as we enter the home stretch of eighth grade. Thomas Edison said that he did not fail at making the light bulb one thousand times, but rather that “the light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps”. Thank you for your continued support and partnering with us to illuminate your child’s path to success.

Reading The Reading Plus program is designed to help students become better and faster readers. It is a web-based program where students are able to increase their capacity to independently read and comprehend complex text, develop silent reading fluency to make reading productive and build a purpose and value for reading. Students actually get to choose the interest category, curriculum area and genre that they are interested in. Reading Plus is a highly “incentive” based program where upon completion of goals met for the week and with no behavioral infractions, students can earn awards, coupons and “goodies” for all of their hard efforts.

ESOL In Language Arts we continue to work on developing listening, speaking, reading and writing. The students worked very hard with the Spelling Bee, and through their efforts learned many new words and had healthy competitions! This quarter we will continue to work on polishing our writing skills, practicing our essay writing, based on different topics using text evidence and critical thinking. In Reading we continue to build vocabulary, affirm reading comprehension and increase reading fluency. The computer learning through SOLO and Vocab Journeys has been key in helping students increase their language skills! Thank you for your continued support at home

HEALTH It’s hard to believe we are well into the second semester of the year. Some of the topics we have covered in Health class are nutrition, skills for building better health and how physical activity contributes to a healthy body and mind. Essentially students are learning how to take charge of their own health. Students have been eager to talk about their own health by asking questions. This semester students will be asked to write a one page essay on a health related issue that is personally important to them. Also, students will be learning about conflict resolution, bullying, tobacco and related illnesses. Skills for building better health learned in this class will serve the students for a lifetime. Good Health to all!

ART ADVENTURES It has been an incredibly creative start to the new semester and 2016! I always look forward to the beginning of a new semester when I have the opportunity to meet my new students in 2D Art and welcome back previous students into my 3D Art classes. I hope you’ve been checking your students’ planner and art folder to read about, and view, some of the wonderful things we’ve been creating in our Art classes. 2D Art classes have been exploring the Elements and Principles of Art through a variety of cooperative learning group activities, written assignments and individual art projects. Coming up next, students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of art media as they make additional independent creative discoveries into the world of Drawing. Also, within the next month or two students will try their hand at Printmaking, Painting and Collage. 3D Art students have also been extremely busy these past few weeks. While reviewing the Elements and Principles, students had the opportunity to create some beautiful 3D work while experimenting with paper and other recyclable art materials. Students have been learning how to incorporate the Elements and Principles into their 3D works of art while using a variety of techniques and processes. 2D and 3D art students will have the opportunity to show their work at the SCAEA Spring Art Show at the Seminole Town Center Mall in Sanford, more details will be provided through our eCampus course when available. Thank you for sharing your child with me each day and allowing me the opportunity to help them discover their creativity! Please take a moment to visit our 2D Art and 3D Art course in eCampus, both classes are published and have the activities, homework, learning goals/scales and other important class information posted. EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT It’s that time already – we are planning for our 8th graders to transition to high school! For each ESE student planning on attending Lake Brantley High School next year for 9th grade, a counselor will be meeting with the student, parent and case manager to construct the best schedule for the success of the student. As an ESE department, we will be collaborating with LBHS to ensure all of our students needs are met for a smooth transition to high school. We will be working with their case managers of exceptional students to discuss the needs of the student’s, their IEP’s and accommodations. Lake Brantley also hosted a night for ESE parents on February 3rd from 6-8pm in the auditorium for a follow up session. This night was open to any parent seeking extra support in scheduling their ESE student in classes. If you were unable to attend this event, contact Lake Brantley at 407-746-3450 for any scheduling questions or concerns.

LIFE SKILLS Welcome new 6th graders to Life Skills. Our focus in this class is to learn about ourselves, our school, and the world around us. We talk about self-esteem, the importance of good time-management, and all things social & academic. This class is one that should challenge your child to see things, question, and then apply appropriate actions to any situation. This class relies heavily on collaborating with me and each other. I’m getting to know your child and appreciate any emails or phone calls if you need my help in any way. Thank You. Ms. Rubin (407) 320-1492 or [email protected].
