The common coquí or coquí is a frog endemic to Puerto Rico. The species is named for the loud call themales make at night. This sound serves two purposes. "CO" serves to repel males and establish territorywhile the "KEE" serves to attract females. Jose will demonstrate how this tiny frog can make a big sound.

The Watermark series of Tuesday Film Noir Thrillers will continue this Fall with four gritty dramas from the40's and 50's. Frank DeStefano will continue to present these films that we often saw as the secondfeature on the Saturday double feature menu. September 17: High Sierra. A failed robbery finds Humphrey Bogart on the lam in this 1941 film directedby John Huston. Ida Lupino co-stars. Bogart’s success in this film led directly to his great roles in TheMaltese Falcon and Casablanca. 100 minutes.October 23: Call Northside 777. This series will examine three critical wars in the Persian Gulf: the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), the Gulf War(1990-1991), and the Iraq War (2003). It will survey and analyze trends in relations during each of thewars, and show how each war became a source of subsequent shifts in the regional balance of power. Events in the Persian Gulf today cannot be fully understood without examining how the dynamics andaftermaths of these wars led to the elevation of Iran to superpower status in the region.

And so the Black will remain, despiteobvious gains since 1865, a Second Class citizen in a Nation which boasts of Consent of the Governed.

Arthur Gottlieb Students for Life Program

Art Gottlieb is a local historian on subjects of political and military history. He was formerly a professionalcurator of naval history and the Technical Director of Exhibits at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum inNew York City. In these roles, Mr. Gottlieb worked regularly with veterans of all services towards thecreation of exhibits accurately illustrating the history of 20th century warfare. From 1989 through 1997,Mr. Gottlieb coordinated with all branches of the armed services and National Guard towards thepreservation of historic ships, aircraft and armor from around the world, and has facilitated the recoveryof scores of artifacts from warships slated for demolition from reserve fleets. For the past 14 years Mr.Gottlieb has refocused his professional efforts towards reaching out and addressing the growing needs ofaging veterans and their families. Mr. Gottlieb maintains a private practice as a Counselor and CertifiedSenior Advisor in Norwalk, CT, and offers pro bono counseling services to soldiers returning from Iraq andAfghanistan. Mr. Gottlieb served as an Auxiliary Officer of the United States Coast Guard for 17 years andfor 4 years was Commander of Flotilla 7-2, 1st District (Southern Region), Sector Long Island Sound North.

Barbara Paris - Rabbi Shabbat

Rabbi Barbara Paris has served the greater Bridgeport community for over 25 years as Vice President ofJewish Family Service. Later in life, she attended Rabbinic School and started a second career. Barbaraloves to share her love of Judaism with all, whether it is with high school students at Choate Rosemary Hallwhere she has served as the rabbi for over 10 years, patients at St. Vincent’s hospital where she is theRabbi/Jewish Chaplain, or her students at the JCCH of Harrison.Barbara is a lifelong learner and an enthusiastic teacher. She was ordained at the pluralistic Academy forJewish Religion in New York. Barbara is open and accepting to people from all backgrounds andtheologies. She is dynamic, warm and a woman who seeks to engage everyone. Her love of Judaism isinfectious. Barbara looks forward to welcoming the Shabbat with our residents through prayer, song andstudy. No Hebrew background is necessary – just an open heart and a willingness to learn together.

buildOn Student Volunteers Health Center Programs

A non-profit organization that is working through service and education. At Central High School, buildOn isengaging more than 50 students to do service within their local community, making connections withresidents of Fairfield County. This year, Central has already worked with youth, elderly, city beautificationprojects, community gardens and even marches to promote non-violence and the importance ofeducation. The buildOn students dedicate time to gain valuable experiences and life lessons partneringwith residents at The Watermark and look forward to facilitating a variety of Watermark offerings.

Carol Goncalves Mystery Lunch

Carol's connection to Watermark began in 1979 in the Food Service Department. Though Watermarkwould form her major career, she also taught English as a Second Language at Bullard High School in heryounger days until the government ended the program. Over the years she has held many posts here,leading to her current role as Human Resources Manager. In this position, she is responsible for the hiringof staff members in various departments, helping Watermark to run smoothly. Born and raised inBridgeport, Carol has a large family: Two sons, two grandsons, three step-children, and seven step-grandchildren. She manages to oversee a Goncalves family dinner every Sunday.

Cynthia Dungey - Community Coordinator History of the Pumpkin

Cindy Dungey was born and raised on Long Island. She began college at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania,but transferred to the University of California in San Diego where she received a BA in Political Science. Her experience in the workforce includes food & beverage management, sales & marketing, home staging,writing, photography and retail management. She lived in California and Oregon since 1981, but justmoved back to the East Coast. She has three children, the youngest is the starting quarterback at SyracuseUniversity.

With over 25 years ofexperience in the fitness profession, teaching a variety of fitness classes as well as managing multisportfacilities, her interest in fitness and wellness is to provide practical healthy lifestyle information to all ages.In addition to fitness, she also teaches Anatomy and Physiology at Sacred Heart University. Cindy lives inShelton with her husband and son who keep her fit and young at heart.

Elsa Cantor and Don Lamberty are retired educators. Elsa worked as a school psychologist for 34 years. Don started his career as a research physicist. After 10 years, he left the industry to continue his love ofscience, working as a high school teacher, teaching both chemistry and physics. As wife and husband, Elsaand Don share their passion for travel during their retirement. They have traveled extensively in Asia andCentral and South America, as well as many islands around the world. John Calhoun was an Engineering Manager at Parker Hannifin Corp. After retirement, while President ofthe Stratford Historical Society, he co-authored two books illustrating Stratford history. Here atWatermark John serves on the Resident Council, the Building and Grounds Committee, and the ArtsCommittee. He has studied Great Courses for several years and enjoys presenting a variety of historical,scientific and musical topics.

Jon Haight, Independent Wine Educator Wine Travels

Jon Haight has worked as a wine retailer, consultant, wine journalist, and wine educator. For over 20 yearshe has taught wine appreciation classes at the University of New Haven and is also a Certified SpanishWine Educator. Jon has traveled to many of the world's greatest wine producing regions and has beenmaking wine for over 25 years. Currently he runs weekly educational tastings at a wine shop, does publicand private classes throughout Connecticut, and conducts wine classes at Jones Winery.

Jose Sanchez, Porter Common Coqui

Jose has been working here at the Watermark since 2011. He first started in the Dining ServicesDepartment and now has the early shift in the Housekeeping Department. He lives in Bridgeport andcomes from a family of 12, somewhere in the middle, close to the end. He went to Central High Schoolthen to Hill House in New Haven where he played golf. He also attended culinary school in Boston for ayear and half. He is very happy and content in his position. He enjoys the weather and family time.

Kayti Meehan was born in England and moved to America when she was 19 years old. She began trainingto be a group exercise instructor in 1999 after the birth of her second son. She received her NationalCertification from the Aerobics and Fitness Association (AFAA) in March 2001. In the same year shebecame a certified teacher of the Silver Sneakers Fitness Program. Silver Sneakers is the nation's leadingexercise program designed exclusively for older adults. In 2004, she received the AFAA Personal TrainingCertification enabling her to train individual clients and customize workout programs specifically to theirneeds and fitness goals. Kayti began teaching a variety of classes at The Watermark at 3030 in 2009. Shecontinues to complete fitness workshops and certifications to broaden her fitness knowledge and skills.

Attracting Birds by the SeasonSpecies on the Brink

Ken's interest in birds started when he was 10 years old, while watching the birds at his grandmother'sfeeders in Vermont and he has been obsessed ever since. He started his career in conservation educationat a small nature center and quickly moved onto the Connecticut Audubon Society, leading manyEcoTravel trips, competing in the World Series of Birding, and directing their education programs for allfive centers. In 2008, Ken moved onto National Audubon, where he's the Education Program Manager atthe Audubon Center at Bent of the River in Southbury. In the past few years, he's tripled the enrollmentof their summer camps, and created a nationally recognized therapeutic program, called Bird Tales, usingbirds to engage people with dementia.

Kristin Butler - Executive Director Wines of the Finger Lakes

Kristin is the Executive Director here at Watermark. She is originally from Syracuse, New York but hasresided in Connecticut for 20 years. She has held a variety of positions in senior living including ExecutiveDirector, Nursing Home Administrator, Operations Director of Aging Services Continuum and Director ofPerformance Improvement. Her career path started at Niagara University with a Bachelors in PoliticalScience and Business and then on to graduate school at James Madison University in Harrisonburg,Virginia to study Public Administration.

Martha Jane Patton, Professor Students for Life:A Trinity of Intersecting Wars in the Middle East

Dr. Marcie J. Patton is Professor Emerita of Politics at Fairfield University. For over thirty years she hastaught courses in Middle East politics and Comparative Politics at Elmhurst College in Illinois and atFairfield University. Dr. Patton received awards for Teaching Excellence at both institutions. She alsotaught in Turkey as a Visiting Fulbright Senior Scholar at Bilkent University in Ankara, and as a VisitingProfessor at Bosphorus University in Istanbul. Her scholarly publications are based on field research thatshe conducted in Turkey, Morocco, and Kyrgyzstan. She earned her Ph.D. from The University of Chicago.

Mark Albertson - Historian Author/Speaker Students for Life Program

Mark Albertson is the historical research editor at Army Aviation Magazine; and, is the historian for theArmy Aviation Association of America. He is a long-time member of the United States Naval Institute andhas authored several books. Mark teaches history as an adjunct professor at Norwalk Community Collegeas well as the Lifetime Learners Institute at Norwalk Community College. He also is an avid speaker on avariety of issues on history and appears in a variety of venues.

Employed by the Bridgeport Fire Department since 1996, Rob is currently ranked as aLieutenant. He has a lifelong love of local history including authoring four books through ArcadiaPublishing as well as writing a local newspaper column for Hometown Publications for 15 years. Rob beganconducting historical presentations about 12 years ago while serving as Executive Director of the DerbyHistorical Society. This has been refined to the popular "Yesterday's Headlines" and other programsconducted under the business name "Hometown History CT" since 2011.

She has been retired for 4 years and has lived in Fairfield for over 40years. Susan participates in two other book groups as well as volunteers to lead the book club here atWatermark. She also participates in the Strength Training for Woman class on Tuesday mornings withSusan Kennedy.

Victoria Hussain Sociology Crash Course Introduction

Victoria Hussain is the daughter of Afghanistan born mother and father. She was born in the CzechRepublic, and raised in Munich Germany, traveled to Russia and now resides in Trumbull, CT. She went toNorwalk Community College, but took a break in 2018 to join us here at The Watermark for moreexperience in the healthcare field. Knowledgeable in all of the psychologies, her favored is sociology dueto the fact it's all around us. We live in a world where sociology is key, and has been throughout her life. Her hobbies are swimming, going to the movies, and spending time with her family especially her son whois 12 years old and loves all things music, especially strings, such as the violin and guitar.
