AT TMCC THE HEART IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE

EDITOR’S NOTE 5

During a period of global economic crisis – underlined by company closures and job losses caused

by the Covid-19 pandemic -- a pall of gloom hovers over many horizons with lives and livelihoods being affected.

Countries have been pushed to darkened corners, the populace remains bewildered while panic-stricken and troubled governments are left bracing themselves for the huge challenge ahead until a vaccine is found to control the pandemic.

Inadvertently, golf clubs too are hampered by the infectious spill-down effect and must adapt, adopt and act quickly to bear the huge cost.

Fortunately, the quick-thinking and forward-looking Tanah Merah Country Club management has taken swift and stern measures to ensure that the activities of the club can continue under Phase Two of the Circuit Breaker.

After four months of golf inactivity, the Garden and Tampines courses were reopened on June 19 and the members have been enjoying their rounds under stringent safety measures and strict supervision.

The measures include wearing masks, adopting safe distancing rules, keeping people contact to a minimum by allowing a maximum of five people to gather, cleaning and sanitising many areas and equipment plus restricting the use of changing rooms.

The “do’s and don’t’s” – including temperature taking, SafeEntry check-ins and insistence on not sharing utensils at dining outlets -- have been explicitly explained in point form and supported with images on the club’s website on top of strategically placed notices around the club’s premises.

It is encouraging to note that members and golfers have been paying serious heed to the comprehensive information and are playing by the rules of safe distancing measures and masking up.

The net result is a contagiously cheerful, cordial and convivial mood amongst members that has filtered down to the staff, marshals and F&B workers.

But all this can go up in flames with just one slip in behavioural patterns, resulting in a wave of infections. So the club has appealed to members and golfers to maintain the status quo of good behaviour and prevent any virus infection which can upset the applecart.

All the safety measures introduced by the club as per the Government’s Task Force recommendations come at a revenue cost, so one errant move could force some money down the drain in a period of tight pockets.

So far, for the vigilant Tanah Merah Country Club management and staff, things are looking up, as although the initial rush to secure golf flight bookings has tapered down, the Garden and Tampines courses have reassuringly seen full take-ups both for weekdays and weekends.

The club management has been encouraging golfers to continue playing, and if possible, play more, bearing in mind that TMCC is among the few clubs in Singapore that is allowing a small percentage of guests to play purely for revenue collection.

Guests are already queueing up because both the Garden and Tampines courses, contrasting as they are, offer an enjoyable yet stern test of the players’ ability and approach to the game.

And although golfers are discouraged from group gathering, pre-or post-game, the F&B outlets have been configured for safe dining so that players can continue to have happy and enjoyable dine-in experiences.

The club has also been generous in extending a 15 per cent discount to members for Takeaways, fully aware that the TMCC F&B outlet food menus have adequate variety and taste and that the waiters and waitresses are friendly and attentive in equal measure.

TMCC is also grateful that the members have opened their hearts and wallets for a good cause of helping through the Caddie Welfare Fund.

A high degree of compassion was expressed when a total sum of $63,880 was raised through donations (on appeal) from more than 200 generous members to help the caddies whose income had been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The largest donations received from several members was $5,000 each and this expression of generosity has been the club’s mantra for years.

Mind you, during a period of gloom with job losses and salary cuts, TMCC has managed to retain all its staff, also because the members have shown indulgence and magnanimity.

And there has been all-round appreciation for the many positive gestures by all and sundry at the renowned club.

TMCC’s FirsT ‘VirTual’ aGM sees sMooTh runninGNew General Committee has much to do to advance the Club amidst the impact of Covid-19

In trying times, Tanah Merah Country Club has always raised the ante to demonstrate steel and steadfastness to ride the tide.

Whether it had been embarking on hosting world-acclaimed golf events or undertaking course upgrading and redevelopment, TMCC had always delivered, leaving a huge majority of members giving the thumbs-up.

So when it came to holding the club’s 37th AGM during a very difficult period of restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, TMCC scored a major “first” by staging a Live Audio-Visual Broadcast meeting that saw smooth goings-on.

Mr Ng Kee Choe (Chairman), Mr Ho Beng Huat (President) and

Therefore, on June 12, a record 82 members participated in the “virtual” AGM, going through online streaming of five items on the agenda within an hour of smooth and unruffled procedure.

Club chairman Ng Kee Choe appeared on “Zoom” to set the tone for the AGM with a short but significant address that honestly appraised the club’s position over the past two momentous years.

He said: “The last two years or so have been a very eventful one for the club, as we completed the redevelopment of our two courses during this period. Tampines completed its full year-year operations in 2019, and Garden opened to members in March this year after a record of just 11 months.

“Because we were operating with only one course during this period our finances have been strained as revenue fell. The club’s financial position was further stressed with the outbreak of Covid-19, resulting in the closure of the club.

“Golfing revenue, which forms a significant part of our revenue, has completely gone away. The incoming GC will have to address this issue and take measures as necessary to correct the position. The club’s financial position has to strengthen, and operations must be kept on a financially sustainable basis.”

Mr Ng also recorded his appreciation to Mr Choo Chiau Beng, the deputy chairman for 12 years, who retired on 31 December last year as part of succession planning. He welcomed Mr Niam Chiang Meng as the new deputy chairman.

Club president Ho Beng Huat said that the new Tampines course and clubhouse saw its first full year of operations, and the news was very well received by members, guests, and organisers of corporate events.

Mr Ho said: “The championship course is challenging and the new clubhouse spacious and breezy and located on a high point with a panoramic view of the golf course. Year 2019 also saw the closure of the Garden course for redevelopment.

“We made the right decision to pick renowned designer Robert Trent Jones II for the job and his team skilfully transformed the reduced site of 44 hectares into a beautiful 18-hole Par-71 course. It was also a good

decision to go for an accelerated redevelopment job to reduce downtime. We achieved that with the reopening of Garden after just 11 1/2 months on 10 February 2020.

“TMCC’s two golf courses and clubhouses have now been fully rejuvenated, and we look forward to leveraging on these renewed assets for the enjoyment of our members and to enhance the position of TMCC as a premier club in the region.

“Last year we suffered an operating deficit of $2.78 million, slightly lower than an operating deficit of $2.98 million the year before. This was something we accepted because one golf course was closed for redevelopment during the last two years.

“With both golf courses opened from February this year we had expected to return to a more sustainable financial position. Alas, Covid-19 and Circuit Breaker measures closed down our golf courses and our F&B outlets could only do takeaways since April, which severely impacted our finances.

“Hopefully we can reopen soon but the holding of corporate events, which is a major source of revenue, will be a washout for the rest of the year and F&B operations, another major source of revenue, will likely continue to be subject to restrictions.

“We are grateful to the Government for their strong support with property tax rebates and wage subsidies but, overall, our finances are going to be severely affected. Assuming we can reopen late June or latest in July, and with continuing Government support, we face an estimated operating deficit of over a million dollars in 2020.

“The incoming General Committee will have to ponder how to restore good order to our finances. On a brighter note I am happy to inform members that our two golf courses remain in good condition whilst under restricted maintenance during the past two months of closure.

A record number of 640 proxy forms was received through email and by post. All the AGM resolutions were passed and the much-anticipated election of the vice-president (two contestants) and GC members (11 contestants) was a smooth affair. The internal auditor, Baker Tilly, verified the results of the election.

On notice of Any Other Business, one question submitted by Mr Andrew Liew was as follows:

“In the light of the Club’s temporary closure from 7 April 2020, please consider waiver of the subscription fee for the month of April. It would be a nice gesture on the part of the Club. thank you”

Reply from the Club as follows:

The Club had to suspend its operations because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the finances of the Club are adversely impacted as there was no income from golfing and F&B sales. Expenses continue to be incurred as the Club has decided to retain all staff and the maintenance of the Club’s two golf courses and other facilities had to be continued despite the suspension of operations.

The Club has considered the member’s request to waive the subscription fee for April but is unable to accede to it as its financial position would be further strained as a result.

the opportunity to play golf, even as the CovID-19 pandemic still rages on, is a privilege that we must never take for granted.

While it’s important to have fun, it’s even more imperative for all of us to respect and comply with the Safe

It’s both a personal and collective responsibility and we should constantly remind each other to obey these rules. Only then can we continue to ensure the Club is a safe environment for all parties.

Please be reminded to observe these safe measures while you golf.

tanah Merah Country Club is an association with a heart. The club’s hardware – it’s buildings, facilities and course – are easily recognisable. But the club also has a software

that is to be admired. It revolves around having feelings and compassion. The Covid-19 pandemic has drastically affected the livelihoods of many of its caddies. It should also be noted the club prides itself in not having let go of even one staffer during this difficult period.

So, for the affected workers, the club, through the donations (on appeal) from more than 200 members, provided some financial help. A total of $63,880 was collected to be distributed to the affected caddies. The largest donation received from several members was $5,000 each. The club has carefully considered each caddie’s circumstances, and, with the approval of the General Committee, has disbursed a total of $2,000 to each full-time caddie.

Part-time caddies/runners each received $1,000. Collectively, a sum of $37,750 has been disbursed to 28 full-time caddies and part-time caddies/runners. The remaining $26,130 have been placed in the Caddie Welfare Fund for future disbursement as needed, especially if the circuit breaker period is extended, or if future social distancing measures further impact the livelihoods of the caddies.

The club has especially thanked the members for their kind support and generous contributions as this financial aid will go a long way to brighten the lives of the caddies and their families.

The caddies were appreciative of the generous gesture and wished everyone at the club with this reminder: Stay healthy and safe!

At the TMCC Junior Golf School, no junior is too young for golf.

TMCC Junior Golf School coaches come from a lineage of instructors who have taught a spectrum of player abilities ranging from PGA Tour professionals to national players through to weekend warriors learning to play golf for the first time. More than just expertise, what defines our pros is their passion for junior golf development.

A Game of lifeBeyond learning the game of golf, TMCC junior golfers will learn core skills, values and have their character built for life.

Essential skills required in learning motor movements will translate over to your child’s academic career. There is no better time to learn athletic skills than during a child’s formative age.

Golf, a double-handed game, will help develop both sides of your child’s brain. If one hand is good, two hands are better - this is the whole brain concept that your child will learn through golf.

Juniors enjoy these sessions as they learn because they are in a playful environment – humans learn best when at ease and having fun.

learning RulesWith professional golfers calling penalties on themselves for infringements that only they are aware of, golf has been rightfully called a gentleman’s game.

In keeping with the spirit of the game, your child will learn the importance of rules. Under the tutelage of our

pros, the TMCC junior golfer will understand taking responsibility for the consequences of their action or inaction in a safe environment.

mental toughnessOur patented C.H.E.N (Courage, Humility, Enthusiasm, No Mind) drills are mental toughness drills that require a bucket load of patience and determination to complete. Regular practice with these drills will teach your child mental control, the ability to self-motivate and turn them into mentally resilient little humans.

Did we mention that TMCC is just a 4-minute drive from the Jewel Changi? That’s right. Simply leave your kids with us, go enjoy a well-deserved weekend coffee with a spot of shopping, then come back and fetch them!

About the tanah merah Junior Golf School:The TMCC Junior Golf School is a tier-1 golf academy in Singapore that aims to become the standard bearer of golf academies in South East Asia. Founded with the goal of advancing junior golf instruction in South East Asia, it is now recognised as the premier learning centre for golfers of all calibres.

happy 55th Birthday, Singapore! COVID-19 has created tremendous

challenges for many of us. Amidst the difficulties, it’s been so heartening to see Singaporeans coming together and working hand-in-hand to overcome the odds with resilience, kindness and compassion.

As part of the NDP 2020 Anthem Movement, the Singapore National Anthem was played throughout the Club’s premises at 10:30am and all TMCC Staff and Members stood at attention. This coincided with special flag-raising ceremonies taking place at eight locations across Singapore, each symbolising different key national sectors in Singapore.

the life buoy or life preserver is a life saving device designed to be thrown to a person in the

water, to provide buoyancy and prevent drowning. The life buoys are also fitted with a safety rope that is able to support the act of rescue as you can literally pull the victim into the shallow edge and use the ladder rungs, fitted into the vertical rock wall sides. Each Life Buoy is fully compliant which ensures lifebuoys are inherently buoyant and thus capable of supporting weight in the water for extended periods.

Both the Garden and Tampines Course lakes have been fitted with life buoys at strategic locations away from the line of play throughout the 18-hole layouts.

The Garden lakes have been constructed in a way whereby the initial entry point

is less than 1 metre in depth which in turn forms a safety shelf.

In the unfortunate situation where you are required to use the life buoy, simply release the buoy itself from the hook and cast out to the victim directly. By controlling the length of the rescue rope and adjusting the position on the shore, a user can

These are familiar terms to Singaporeans in the light of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic. This is a viral attack, the worst the country has faced since Independence, that has also taken the world by storm and is still causing severe harm including a record tally of deaths.

On her part, Singapore has taken a big lead in the fight against the pandemic with a series of safety measures imposed to ensure that the virus is kept in check as the country looks to loosening up certain controls in anticipation of Phase Three. Tanah Merah Country Club has well heeded the Government’s warnings and to ensure compliance, has introduced a series of safety checks so that members can continue to enjoy the facilities and offerings while attempting to ward off a second wave of infection that is troubling many countries.

And the club is continuing to safeguard the health of members and staff (including guests) with preventive measures even at considerable financial expense to itself. The first step was to introduce a comprehensive range of environmental cleaning and disinfection measures targeted at reducing the risk of transmission of Covid-19 to persons from surfaces contaminated with the virus.

Frequent cleaning and disinfection of all high-touch areas at both the Garden and Tampines courses is now an operational priority. More general information regarding the sanitisation process and the chemicals used (and their effectiveness) have been released by the club’s GM Kok Min Yee to members via the club’s website.

The second step was concerning Safe Golfing where measures had been introduced and explained (with details and graphics) in another article, made available by the club’s director of golf Ian Roberts on the website. The “do’s and don’t’s” have been explicitly explained in point form and supported with relevant images.

It would be good if members and golfers pay heed to the comprehensive information, especially keeping to the safe distancing rule and masking up.

From the cleanliness and sanitisation of the facilities and the safety measures on course, the third step involves tips for those patronising the restaurants (including the club’s Food & Beverage Outlets) and those making delivery and take-out orders.

Stay Safe, Stay Well!

1Mask up and bring a Ziplock bagEating or drinking should be the only time you remove your mask while you’re outside. When you do so, you’ll need to keep your mask somewhere clean. This is where a ziplock bag can come in handy, to ensure that your mask is not left exposed to the surroundings while you enjoy your meal.

The FiVe are:

2Limit gatherings to 5 peopleIf you need to meet your friends in person over a meal, make sure to keep the group as small as possible, with a maximum of five people. Keep in mind that it’s still best to keep your circle of contacts small, and preferably to a regular circle of close contacts.

3Always practise safe distancingF&B establishments will have in place safe management measures to ensure that groups are at a safe distance from each other. Nevertheless, do make sure you keep at least 1m apart from other groups, and to not mix between groups. If you intend to dine at any of our Food & Beverage outlets, please peruse our Reopening Guide that contains all the necessary measures that have been put in place for everyone’s safety.

4Do not share utensilsWhile you may be tempted to help your friends finish their last bit of food on their plate, it is important to avoid sharing food or utensils, as viruses are spread through droplets like saliva. Instead, use serving spoons.

5Check-in using SafeEntrySafeEntry QR codes should be a familiar sight by now – you can facilitate contact tracing and identification of clusters by checking in and out wherever required. Ensure you have your mobile device, or your ID with you to do so. More details on the Club’s SafeEntry requirements can be perused on our Reopening Guide.

Covid-19 or not, safety has always been an important aspect of Tanah Merah Country Club. Golfers are regularly briefed; notices are omnipresent,

and marshals are always on their toes with impromptu checks to affirm that laws and rules are being followed to the letter.

Considering the ongoing viral pandemic, safety checks have been enhanced to ensure that no rule or application is breached to avert trouble. The club has also introduced a CPR/AED exercise to test the operational readiness of front-line staff in TMCC. The testing was done over a series of dates starting from July 22, 2020 till July 30, 2020.

CPR/AED testing will be conducted biannually by the Sports Department to assess the gaps, concerns and needs for improvement from a safety point of view for the members and guests of the club. The equipment used will be a Mannequin for the purposes of administering CPR as well as a CPR/AED checklist to record responses from the tested staff. The Sports Department also performed this exercise on February 7 and October 3 in 2019.

Both Garden and Tampines courses were covered during the testing with it being the first live test of the year. Different departments were tested for operational readiness in case of an emergency. Staff were presented with likely scenarios that could occur in TMCC and were asked to perform the relevant follow-ups in terms of the administering of CPR and AED. The final grades were based on two tests - namely CPR and AED and appropriate actions were taken in the various scenarios.

Let us all do our part in establishing a safe club environment for everyone.

Even now, the COVID-19 virus continues to evolve in numerous ways. It will be a long fight, but the Club is prepared to do whatever is necessary to safeguard the health of our members and staff, even at considerable financial expense.

ThaT Can be Tailored To MeMbers’ needs

the term power can have various interpretations. It conjures images of physical might and an ability to act or

produce an effect. And our minds naturally gravitate towards heavy lifting and plyometric exercises.

Power is popularly believed to be the product of force and velocity. Thus, this translates to muscle strength being converted to developing force, combined with quicker moves resulting in more power. For some, this means that we should lift heavy weights faster in order to separate the force and the velocity. In short, strength-building exercises are key.

If anything, the Covid-19 pandemic has propagated the trend of leading a healthy lifestyle. People around the world in various states of lockdown had to find a new lifestyle to occupy themselves with given the ludicrous amount of spare time suddenly on their hands. Tanah Merah Country Club has capitalised on the situation and is conducting Power Workouts, a holistic workout session that engages all parts of the body.

It is a 60-minute workout session that incorporates elements of cardio, interval training as well as an important stretching segment at the end to ensure there is no DMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). The sessions are conducted by the club’s extremely enthusiastic in-house trainers, Bharat and Abdillah, and the intensity is constantly adjusted to cater to members’ changing needs.

Each workout session begins with a cardio routine to get the body going before key exercises like push-ups, sit-ups and shoulder presses are introduced. As of writing, 11 regulars have been diligently attending the sessions and their constructive feedback is used to tweak the sessions accordingly to suit the member’s everchanging preferences. Covid-19 or not, TMCC is not a club that sits still, but is always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to engage its members.
