Our community’s growth brings the lyrics of an old song to mind: “What a difference a day makes.” People who return to College Station after a long absence are always amazed by the many changes. We have more restaurants, hotels, shopping opportunities — and way more traffic, too. The City of College Station continues to add streets, lights, and other facilities and infrastructure to keep up. That growth has also dramatically impacted our parks and recreation services.

In the last decade, as our population has expanded from 84,000 to 122,000, the demand for accessible and safe play and green space has risen substantially. We are frequently asked about creating new parks and upgrading existing properties.

In 2008, our system consisted of 37 developed parks covering 1,148 acres and one cemetery. Today, the city boasts 57 parks (52 developed) with Northgate and Southeast Parks under development, and two cemeteries. Continued growth and development will soon bring six more parks covering 128 acres into our system.

While we are expanding, we remain focused on our existing parks. The last decade has seen improvement projects in 49 parks, including renovations, better amenities, new playgrounds and surfacing, swings, sidewalks, bridges, and lighting. We are planning even more enhancements.

Several Parks and Recreation facilities have been renovated, expanded, and improved. These include the Lincoln Recreation Center (expansion and renovation), Southwood Community Center (minor renovation), Ringer Library (major renovation), Adamson Lagoon (bathhouse renovation and slide overhauls), Cindy Hallaran Pool (major repairs), G. Hysmith Skatepark, Lick Creek Nature Center and the Meyer Senior and Community Center.

The numbers are impressive, but the College Station parks system is about so much more than acreage or how many parks we have. Maintaining the system is a true passion and labor of love for our employees. Picking up trash in your neighborhood parks, teaching swim lessons, caring for our beautiful planter beds, and hosting large-scale special events is why we’re here every day. We love what we do and appreciate your continued support as we strive to offer you the best in parks and recreation facilities, programs, and services.

YOUTH PROGRAMSCHALLENGER FAMILY SOCIAL The City of College Station believes everyone should experience the remarkable benefits of recreational activities, regardless of physical or developmental challenges. Socials bring together sports, playground fun, arts and crafts, and lawn games to provide options for learning new skills while having fun. Activity stations include games such as arts and crafts, cornhole, Connect Four, Jenga, dominoes, tic-tac-toe, soccer, basketball, football and more. Participants are paired with volunteers from Project Sunshine, whose goal is to build friendships while bringing smiles to children’s faces. Pre-registration is not required.

The family-friendly clinic gives you a chance to try field hockey, play some fun skills-based games, and win prizes. Sticks and balls are provided, and closed-toed shoes are suggested. Pre-registration is not required.

ADULT PROGRAMS*NEW* SPIKEBALL ROUNDNET LEAGUE • REGISTRATION ENDS SEPT. 25 Spikeball Roundnet is a new sport that's sweeping the nation. It's similar to two-player volleyball, but instead of hitting a large ball over a suspended net, players hit a smaller ball into a circular net low to the ground. Teams can still take three touches at a time — for a bump, set, or spike — as in volleyball. The objective is also the same: hit a shot the other team can't return. Divisions include competitive and recreation. Teams can consist of as many players as possible, but only two players are allowed to play in a match at a time. The competitive division plays by the official Spikeball Roundnet Association rules, while the recreation division focuses on developmental skills and is more relaxed on rules. Equipment is provided.

21COLLEGE STATION PARKS & RECREATION FALL GUIDE 2019 | VETERANS PARK AND ATHLETIC COMPLEX |

VETERANS PARK AND ATHLETIC COMPLEXBy Hallie Hutchins, Marketing Staff Assistant

One of the nation’s best multi-use athletic facilities just got better.

Veterans Park and Athletic Complex recently had more than $4 million worth of additions and renovations to continue its legacy of one of College Station's most prominent parks and a premier venue for local, regional, and national tournaments. The 149-acre community park has been making a name for itself since it was first developed in 1999. With three phases of upgrades, the park continues to improve to meet the needs of the community while focusing on athletic tourism. After 337 days of construction, including 62 days affected by weather conditions, the final build-out of Veterans Park and Athletic Complex is complete. The Phase III development added two lighted synthetic turf fields, additional parking, restrooms, shade structures for seating, benches, LED lights, and adequate drainage to protect the fields. The University Drive entrance also was refurbished. The project was funded through hotel occupancy taxes and was approved by the College Station City Council in 2015. The park’s extension breaks the threshold for many event organizers. With 18 fields for softball, soccer, and football, it creates greater opportunities for College Station to host tournaments on a national scale. Extra amenities such as the playground for kids, paved walking trails, the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial, shade structures, convenient restrooms, and additional parking makes the complex enticing for event organizers. The additional fields also benefit local leagues and pick-up games while allowing area athletes to compete in high-level competitions close to home.

COLLEGE STATION PARKS & RECREATION FALL GUIDE 2019 | LARRY J. RINGER LIBRARY |

By Jessica Jones, MSI, Ringer Library Branch Manager

We have waited so long to say “welcome back!” that the phrase might deserve all caps and multiple exclamation marks.

WELCOME BACK!!! We are thrilled to welcome our community back into a new and improved library this season. The brand new building was designed with the idea that we would have plenty of space for everyone.

Some highlights include:

More Program Space The program room is three times the size of the old one, and it can be partitioned into two separate classrooms. That flexibility allows us to have multiple programs or meetings at once.

More Study SpaceThe building contains two conference rooms that accommodate up to 10 people and includes five study rooms that can seat up to three.

New Furniture and ShelvingThe library has an updated appearance with an emphasis on comfort and function.

More ParkingThe library's two lots have more than 50 additional parking spaces.

Teen SpaceThe building contains space just for our teens! The library is a great place to hang out after school and offers a fun and welcoming atmosphere.

Sound ManagementWhile public libraries aren’t necessarily quiet places anymore, a loud space isn’t comfortable for some patrons, either. We added sound-absorbent panels through the center of the building, and a glass wall encloses most of the children's area. Moreover, the Larry J. Ringer Library will be a designated Family Place Library. Youth Services Librarian Michelle Bond has completed training and acquired the necessary equipment to fulfill the requirements to be a community resource on early literacy and child development.

For more information on Family Place libraries, visit familyplacelibraries.org.

40 | COLLEGE STATION PARKS & RECREATION FALL GUIDE 2019 | THE CLASSROOM OUTSIDE THE BOX

Witnessing children’s excitement about learning outside the school classroom is something the Lincoln Recreation Center staff enjoys at our after-school program.

After-school programs benefit participants by enhancing their social skills and promoting healthy habits and physical activity. The many classes, activities, and events also provide academic support while encouraging inventive learning and a sense of belonging.

Social SkillsAfter-school programs are an opportunity for youth to cooperate, make friends, and learn to respect one another. Children learn about other cultural backgrounds and get to know children who attend other schools. Enrichment classes such as Minds of Champions — a professional vocal class that promotes self-confidence and helps remove the fear of performing in front of an audience — helps kids grow through music and performances.

Academic SupportA successful after-school program provides children the necessary help with homework. Many programs have college students who assist with subjects such as math and reading. The Lincoln Recreation Center partners with Texas A&M to provide one-on-one help in every subject.

Inventive LearningLearning new things is another element of after-school programs. Classes are intended to be stress-free and meaningful. Children will never have a test or homework. The primary purpose is to have fun while learning something new. Classes range from lacrosse, basketball, nature plant identification, and computer web design.

Promote Healthy Habits and Physical ActivityParticipating in after-school programs can play an essential role in encouraging physical activity and healthy habits. Dance, cooking, fitness, and sports are a few programs children can pick on a path to a healthier future.

Sense of BelongingAfter-school programs also offer a safe place where children can come together and feel accepted. Making friends and having positive relationships with staff and other kids helps develop a sense of belonging and community.

As the new school year begins, come and see what the Lincoln Recreation Center Afterschool Program can offer your children. For more information and to register,

visit cstx.gov/LincolnCenter or call 979.764.3779.

Monday, Sept. 23 • 7-8:30 p.m. Southwood Valley Elementary Cafeteria (2700 Brothers Blvd.)

The City of College Station is embarking on a major effort to evaluate the plans and policies that guide where and how the city grows in a process called "The Next 10."

The 2009-2030 Comprehensive Plan is the city’s policy roadmap to plan, anticipate, and guide growth and development over 20 years. We’re approaching 10 years since the plan’s adoption, and it’s time to reassess and discuss where the city should go in the next decade. The Next 10 is an opportunity to consider the city's direction in light of trends, best practices, current conditions, and community values so we can proactively address topics important to you.

Your valued feedback will lead to beneficial changes and updates to not only the city’s Comprehensive Plan but also its Unified Development Ordinance, the policies and regulations that affect new development. The Next 10 process will last about 12-14 months and will include multiple opportunities for community input. We expect to have the evaluation completed and presented to the city council next summer.

FOCUS ON THE FUTURE WORKSHOPSWe’re hosting a series of identical workshops throughout College Station to gather your thoughts and concerns about the city’s land use and transportation growth patterns. The fun, informative format will encourage you to share ideas at a session most convenient to your schedule. You don’t have to be an expert to participate, and if you live, work or study in College Station, your perspective is vital to us. There will be activities for kids available.

DID YOU KNOW?In preparation for citizen input workshops in the coming months, the City of

College Station developed two studies to help inform you and our policymakers:

The 2018 Existing Conditions Report is a graphical and data-driven snapshot of the city’s growth trends and conditions from multiple planning perspectives.

The 2019 Citizen Survey provides a synthesis of the thoughts and concerns of a representative sample of residents regarding our community’s quality of life.

OUR COMMUNITY'S HIDDEN GEMTucked away in Veterans Park and Athletic Complex (3101 Harvey Road) is a hidden gem – a 12-acre site dedicated to veterans from our nation’s major wars. The Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial includes life-sized statues, a Wall of Honor, interpretive panels and memorial sites.

Within the Louis L. Adam Memorial Plaza sits the 250-ton red granite Wall of Honor, which serves as the memorial’s focal point. The wall bears the etched names of more than 5,000 veterans representing all periods of U.S. history who are family and friends of Brazos Valley residents. Do you have a beloved veteran to add to the Wall of Honor? The veteran may be living, deceased or active, and does not have to be a Brazos Valley resident. The cost is $150 per name, and the application deadline is Aug. 15 each year. New additions are recognized at the annual Veterans Day Ceremony. Names received after Aug. 15 will be recognized the following year.
