Welcome to the fourth issue of Zoom, the newsletter that updates you on activities at the NFB’s Studio Acadie. Zoom is published three times a year and distributed by email, placed on the NFB’s intranet, and posted on the Studio’s webpage <onf-nfb.gc.ca/fra/studios/?id=2>. Picture editing was completed on December 9, and the remaining post-production will be done in our Montreal offices, from January to March 2011.

Summary Shot over a one year period, this film recounts the love story of Jean-Paul and Anne. They are inseparable – two people in love who have special needs and mental disabilities. Their handi-caps don’t bother them and certainly don’t prevent them from enjoying life and being happy. With the help of Anne, Jean-Paul looks after his parents and his autistic neighbour, ten-year-old Damien, and is the only person who can control him in extreme situations. An inspiring and touching film.

The production is now at the filming stage. The crew travelled to Jamaica in December and included director of photography Jean-Pierre St-Louis and soundman Olivier Léger. Post-production will be done in 2011.

Summary

Repressive homophobia is rampant around the world. Canada, however, is one of the few countries that accept political refugees on the grounds of sexual orientation. This docu-mentary looks at people who have been persecuted in their homeland and have begun an often long and painful journey to find a safe haven to live. What challenges await these refugee claimants? In 2008, only 48 per cent of requests were accepted. For those who might face persecution, imprisonment and torture if their request is denied, the process can seem like a game of Russian roulette.

Summary

This documentary sheds light on the Sisters of Notre-Dame du Sacré-Coeur, a congrega-tion that has existed in southeastern New Brunswick since 1924. The sisters have played a crucial role in the survival of the French language and culture in the province. These pioneers have fervently defended the francophone cause in Acadie and provided a higher education in French to hundreds of young Acadian women including Antonine Maillet, Viola Léger, Édith Butler.

Blanche Véronique Cormier is one of the four young people who talk about mental illness in Racing Thoughts, a film by Louiselle Noël. Depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses remain taboo despite alarming statistics on mental illness among younger Canadians. Blanche Véronique overcame her ill-ness with help from drawings and po-ems. In this web production, she dis-cusses her experience in order to help other young people struggling with mental illness. III – FESTIVALS, SCREENINGS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES ……………………………

The film met with resounding success when it came out in September. Screenings took place in several cities across Canada as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week. Director Louiselle Noël and Blanche Véronique Cormier, one of the young people in the film, at-tended some screenings. The film was also shown at the Rendez-vous de l’ONF en Acadie in six locations in New Brunswick and in Nova Scotia. Last October, the film was presented in Fredericton at the annual meeting of the New Brunswick Foster Families Association. On hand were a hundred parents, social workers and guest speaker Bernard Richard, Ombudsman and Child and Youth Advocate for New Brunswick.

ÇA TOURNE DANS MA TÊTE / RACING THOUGHTS / A film by Louiselle Noël This is a film about children who thought they were “crazy.” Who wanted to die. Who felt fear, anger and hopelessness. “Mental illness,” “madness”... even the words commonly used to describe their conditions are frightening. It is hard to face the fact that a child or teenager is living with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or some other behavioural disorder, and needs help. Mental illness is still very much a social taboo, and those affected often choose silence for fear of being judged.

VOLEUSE DE POUSSIÈRE / LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT Marie-Thérèse François

In Moncton, a historic neighbourhood is obliterated by excavators. Meanwhile, the filmmaker's father succumbs to cancer. In this poetic film, illness and death parallel the demolition of a much-loved neighbourhood. What survives when buildings, trees and a loved one all vanish? In this case, photographs, conversations and the vivid memories shared by residents and by the film's director. Produced through the Tremplin competition, Voleuse de poussière pays homage to both a departed father and a vanished heritage.

INFUSION de Amélie Gosselin Infusion is a playful look at the tea tradition, its many symbols, and the memories it stirs. Some say a cup of tea promotes frank discussion and helps clear up misunderstandings; others swear they can read the future in the leaves left at the bottom. Perhaps there really is something magical about tea…

LLEESS TTRREEMMPPLLIINNSS

The two winning films from Tremplin 2009 premiered at the Festival international du ci-néma francophone en Acadie (FICFA) in September. The film by Marie-Thérèse François, Voleuse de poussière / Like a Thief in the Night, re-ceived the La Vague Award for best Acadian short film.

CONGRATULATIONS MARIE-THÉRÈSE!!

Voleuse de poussière / Like a Thief in the Night (Marie-Thérèse François) and Infusion (Amé-lie Gosselin) were presented at the Campus Saint-Jean library in Edmonton in October, along with the film Mon père le roi by Marie-France Guerrette, the Tremplin winner from the NFB’s Ontario and West Studio. In addition, the films were part of the FICFA tour travel-ling to different regions of New Brunswick, including Bathurst, Miramichi, Tracadie-Sheila and Bonaventure, in September and October. They were also shown at the Rendez-vous de l’ONF en Acadie during the week of October 17.

OTHER ACTIVITIES Journées de la culture / Culture Days

Three Tremplin films from past years were screened during Culture Days held in Moncton in September. The films were Un dimanche à 105 ans / A Sunday at 105 by Daniel Léger, Ils eurent treize enfants / They Had 13 Children by Anika Lirette and La dernière batture / Turning Tides by Mathieu D’Astous.

IV – LES RENDEZ-VOUS DE L’ONF EN ACADIE ……………………………

The fall 2010 season of the Rendez-vous de l’ONF en Acadie was a hit, attracting over 1,200 people in all to screenings in Pointe-de-l’Église at St. Mary’s Bay in Nova Scotia and in Fredericton, Moncton, Caraquet, Kedgwick and Edmundston. V – PARTNERSHIPS ……………………………

Société Radio-Canada Acadie A committed Studio Acadie partner, Radio-Canada Acadie continues to support Studio pro-ductions by airing films by emerging filmmakers. Radio-Canada fosters their development

by acquainting a larger audience with their work, and by collaborating closely in Concours Tremplin launch activities, including promoting the competition on the airwaves, candidate selection, approval of cuts, and promotion and airing of works on its various networks.

Association culturelle du Haut-Saint-Jean inc.

As part of the first festival of documentary and experimental film in Haut-Saint-Jean, direc-tor Rodolphe Caron, a native of northwest New Brunswick, was honoured for his work in cinema. The event took place in October, and producer Murielle Rioux-Poirier travelled to Edmundston to attend the screenings and activities. An estimated 500 people came to the festival

École acadienne de Truro, NOVA SCOTIA A group of 34 students from grades 8 to 12, along with four teachers, came to visit Studio Acadie in October. This was our second visit from this school, as a group had also come in 2008. The visitors thoroughly enjoyed the presentation by producer Murielle Rioux-Poirier, who introduced them to our website, NFB.ca.

VI – CONCOURS TREMPLIN 2011 ……………………………

In collaboration with Radio-Canada, Studio Acadie officially launched the fifth edition of the Tremplin competition.

Tremplin enables emerging filmmakers from Canada’s French-speaking minorities to pro-duce a short documentary under professional conditions. Winners also benefit from train-ing workshops led by experienced professionals. So far, all Tremplin films produced by Studio Acadie have aired on Radio-Canada and had their premiere at FICFA. The deadline for submitting a project was November 18. In all, 19 submissions were re-ceived. A selection committee of five documentary specialists met in early December and chose four semi-finalists, who were given script development training by Carole Laganière in mid-January. The semi-finalists are Mathilde Forest-Rivière, Marie-Thérèse François and Justin Guitard (all three from Moncton) and Nathalie Landry (from Halifax). The winner or winners will be chosen in May.

Le monde, vu par les lapins. Après la partition de l’Allemagne, ces petits mammifères trouvent refuge dans le chemin de ronde qui ceinture Berlin Ouest. En toute candeur, ils racontent leur vie paradisiaque au beau milieu d’une végétation luxuriante et sans presque aucun ennemi, bien protégés par un mur infranchissable. Selon eux, les gardes-frontières armés de la NVA se préoccupent personnellement de leur bien-être et de leur sécurité. Avec le temps, les lapins perdent toute timidité et deviennent paresseux. Ils ne respectent plus la hiérarchie du groupe et se désintéressent des événements qui se déroulaient autour d’eux. Un jour pourtant le mur tombe, et les lapins doivent apprendre à gérer cette nouvelle liberté. Un documentaire original sur les lapins et les hommes. Un clin d’oeil { l’histoire.

The British in Bed jette un regard indiscret sur la Grande-Bretagne d’aujourd’hui. Devant la caméra, sept couples parlent sans aucune pudeur de sexe, d’infidélité, d’amour et de mariage. Dans le confort de leur lit, ces couples décrivent leurs sentiments réciproques et nous donnent un aperçu de ce qui peut alimenter ou tuer une relation. On assiste même à des révélations surprenantes : la flamme d’un couple est ravivée, alors que la confiance s’effrite au sein d’un autre couple lorsque la vérité éclate.

Un rorqual commun s’est échoué sur les côtes irlandaises et une équipe s’emploie { le disséquer. On a dépêché sur les lieux Joy Reidenberg, spécialiste new-yorkaise de l’anatomie des baleines, afin d’éviter que l’animal, qui a visiblement pris de l’expansion, n’explose. Le vétérinaire Mark Evans essaie de trouver la cause du décès et scrute cette extraordinaire anatomie.

Depuis que son père est parti, Haro trouve que sa mère est devenue très bizarre. Elle ne joue presque plus avec lui et passe son temps à regarder de vieilles photos. Elle ne rit plus, et est toujours de mauvaise humeur. Elle s’est même transformée en vrai monstre! Maintenant, Haro doit se débrouiller tout seul pour beaucoup de choses, et il est très souvent fatigué. À hauteur d’enfant, ce court métrage d’animation dépeint les difficultés auxquelles fait face un petit garçon à la séparation de ses parents. Heureusement, les « monstres » peuvent redevenir de gentils parents { un moment donné…

TABOO

Thomas, 20 ans, veut mettre fin à ses jours. Il décide de filmer ses derniers mois. Un testament qu’il confie { son amie, Orane Burri. Dix ans plus tard, après le suicide de Thomas, Orane Burri, devenue cinéaste, décide d’affronter le passé et de visionner le témoignage de son ami.

L’image a fait le tour du monde : un père blotti derrière un baril de ciment essaie en vain de protéger son fils blessé. Cette scène tragique a été filmée par un caméraman de France 2. Le monde entier a été choqué par l’image de Muhammed Al-Durah, jeune palestinien de 12

ans, mort dans les bras de son père, victime de tirs croisés entre soldats palestiniens et israéliens.

Cinq femmes d’âges et d’horizons différents ont filmé les moments les plus intimes de leur vie. Mariées ou célibataires, étudiantes ou au travail, mères ou sans enfants, elles poursuivent toutes la même quête au coeur d’une métropole grouillante. Puisant dans plus de 1 000 heures de tournage, chaque épisode thématique de la série présente cinq histoires singulières, où s’expriment le sentiment d’aliénation de ces femmes et leur désir de se réaliser. Alors que les caméras sondaient la vie privée de ces femmes, tout un pays, tenu en haleine, en est venu { se demander si Connected n’était pas plus qu’un simple exercice de voyeurisme, mais plutôt le reflet de nos peurs collectives dans un monde moderne en perpétuelle mutation. Une sorte de miroir de nous-mêmes.

THE FUTURE OF JOURNALISM – WHO’S GOING TO PAY FOR IT? Langue originale : Allemand Durée 12 minutes Pays : Allemagne Année de production : 2009

Elektrischer Reporter est une série télévisée sur la culture Internet et la révolution numérique. Chaque épisode est consacré à un sujet en particulier, allant du service de messages courts Twitter { l’art collaboratif, en passant par les activités Web qui ont entouré les élections présidentielles aux États-Unis et les élections en Allemagne, et le sport électronique. Dans cet épisode, le journaliste « électrique » Mario Sixtus, qui est aussi l’auteur et l’animateur de la série, décrit les répercussions sur les plans économique et journalistique de la révolution numérique pour sa profession. Sur un rythme accéléré, la série combine des images d’archives avec la voix hors-champ, ouvrant ainsi de nouvelles perspectives pour l’auditoire.

Tout n’est pas rose dans le secteur des soins aux personnes âgées en Grande-Bretagne. Les patients se plaignent rarement – ils en sont souvent incapables –, et les pratiques abusives se développent. Mais le sont-elles vraiment? Il s’agit d’un milieu exigeant pour le personnel soignant, et la vieillesse n’est pas une sinécure. Au-delà des portes du service des urgences, des salles d’endoscopie où s’affairent des chirurgiens aux joues creuses, des patientes vivent au quotidien dans cet environnement médicalisé, et certaines y meurent. C’est la vie.

Après avoir joué les play-boys dissolus à Tokyo dans ses jeunes années, Murata, excentrique bourru et romancier à succès, est retourné sur sa petite île natale. Dix ans ont passé, et Murata n’a noué de lien avec personne, si ce n’est avec son animal de compagnie, un gros poisson rouge.

THE RECKONING : THE BATTLE FOR THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT Langue originale : Anglais, français, espagnol Durée : 83 minutes Pays : États-Unis Année de production : 2009

Plus de 120 pays se sont ligués pour créer la Cour pénale internationale (CPI), premier tribunal permanent chargé de poursuivre les responsables de génocides, si puissants soient-ils, et de les accuser de crimes contre l’humanité. Pendant trois ans et sur quatre continents, nous suivons le dynamique procureur Luis Moreno-Ocampo et son équipe dans sa croisade : il obtient des mandats d’arrêt contre les chefs de l’Armée de résistance du Seigneur en Ouganda, fait passer en jugement les seigneurs de la guerre du Congo, ébranle le système judiciaire colombien et accuse le président soudanais Omar el-Béchir d’avoir perpétré un génocide au Darfour. Rivé sur sa chaise, le spectateur se demande : le procureur parviendra-t-il à son but? Le monde fera-t-il régner la justice?
