Connectionss A Publication of Calvary Baptist Church
AWANA CLUB The Awana clubs begin again on Wednesday, September 4, with a hot dog supper for the children at 6:00pm, followed by the regular program from 6:30pm–8:00pm
LADIES NIGHT OUT Ladies Night Out is for all ladies in the church, and they are welcome to invite friends as well. We will be meeting on Monday, September 9 at 6:30pm at the Longbranch, 90 Twixt Town Road NE, Cedar Rapids. If you plan on attending, please call Debbie Gaeta (396–7976) or email [email protected] so she will know how many will be attending. If you want to come but need a ride, please let Debbie know and she will arrange for someone to pick you up.
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY Attention women! On Monday, September 9 from 9:30am–11:00am, we are beginning a 12-week Bible study titled “Living Above Worry and Stress.” The final session ends on November 18…which leaves plenty of time as to not interfere with holiday busyness. There will also be a suggested book for the study at the cost of $5.00. The location of the study will be in the church library. Please sign up at the Welcome Center soon so we can plan accordingly. For information contact Jeanne Grimm at 227-7756.
POSITIVE IMPRESSIONS Positive Impressions is scheduled for Saturday, September 14, 10:00am–3:00pm in room #23/24. Invite your friends to join you in creating with rubber stamps or working on some other favorite craft project. This is an enjoyable and non-threatening way to spend time developing relationships and building bridges in order to make a positive impression for Christ on your unsaved friends and family members. Even the greeting cards or other crafts that you create for other people can be beneficial in making a positive impression on their lives. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Kim Nelson (319-640-9856) and bring a snack or drink to share with the group.
SALT & PEPPER CLUB Retiree’s will meet at The Pizza Ranch at 2450 Westdale Drive SW, on Tuesday, September 24, at 11:30am. We will have the “fan-favorite” endless buffet for the cost of $8.55 per person, plus tax. Drink is included in the price. We will be enjoying our lunch in a private side room.
Following lunch, our guest speaker will be The Water Utility Manager, for the Cedar Rapids Municipal Utility Department who will briefly share some interesting information about "the best city drinking water around.” Contacts are: Nadene Roberts, Marilyn Seamans or Donna Voss.
STEWARD’S POST BULLETIN BOARD Calvary has an opportunity for someone to serve as the facilitator of the Steward's Post. This is a place where people with good quality items can freely share with people in need of good quality items. Please contact the church office at 319-396-3233 or Nathan Lykkegaard if you are interested or need more information.
GRIEF SHARE
If you have lost a loved one, you have probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel. This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions. Grief Share groups meet weekly to help you face
these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life. On Sunday, August 4 at 6:00pm-8:00pm we will have a special session of Grief Share that specifically addresses the Loss of a Spouse. Then, beginning Sunday, August 25 from 6:00pm-8:00pm we will begin a 12-week series of Grief Share. Each session has three distinct elements: a video, group discussion, and personal study with your workbook. You are welcome to begin attending the Grief Share group at any session. Each is “self-contained,” so you do not have to attend in sequence. There is a suggested donation of $15 for the workbook.

CONCERT OF PRAYER We will gather at 6:00pm on Sunday, September 8, for a time of concerted prayer, knowing that the practice of prayer enhances our relationship with the Lord, demonstrates our reliance upon His resources and responsiveness to His leading, and increases our active concern for others.
Please join us as we together seek to be faithful and fruitful in the service of our great and gracious Lord. SUPERHEROES CAN’T SAVE YOU Among the new books you will find on top of the media chest in the church library is one that uses the superheroes that so many people know and love to help us come to know and love Jesus, history’s greatest hero, in a deeper and more biblically faithful way. Comic superheroes embody the hopes of a world that is desperate for a Savior. But those comic creations cannot save us from our greatest foes — sin and death. Throughout the history of the Church, there have been misconceptions and misrepresentations that fail to present Jesus as the Bible reveals him. In Superheroes Can’t Save You, Todd Miles (Professor of Theology at Western Seminary in Portland, OR) demonstrates how these ancient heresies are embodied in contemporary comic superheroes. This book is creative, engaging, funny, and both biblically and historically accurate. Check it out!
CALVARY PICTORIAL DIRECTORY This month we are excited to start photography for our updated pictorial directory. We want to have an accurate family photo album, and it won’t be complete without you! If you still need to schedule your appointment contact Nadene Roberts at 396-2836 or the church office at 396-3233.
This is also a great time to update your contact information. If you have had a change of address or phone number or other changes in your household since the last directory, please contact the church office or complete an update card located at the Welcome Center.

Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life Teacher: Pastor Jay Jentink
It's not uncommon for an accomplished musician to be able
to sit down in front of a new piece of music and play it
through without a hitch. To make it seem easy, as if it
required no effort. Yet the "freedom" to play with such skill
comes only after years of disciplined practice. In the same
way, the freedom to grow in godliness---to naturally
express Christ's character through your own personality---
is in large part dependent on a deliberate cultivation of the
spiritual disciplines. So if you'd like to embark on a lifelong
quest for godliness, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian
Life will help you on your way. Based on the rich heritage left
us by the early church fathers, the Puritan writers, and
Jesus Christ Himself, Donald Whitney takes you through a
carefully selected array of disciplines that includes
Scripture reading, prayer, worship, Scripture meditation,
evangelism, serving, stewardship, Scripture application,
fasting, silence and solitude, journaling, and learning. By
illustrating why the disciplines are important, showing
how each one will help you grow in godliness, and offering
practical suggestions for cultivating them on a long-term
basis, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life will
provide you with a refreshing opportunity to embrace life's
greatest pursuit---the pursuit of holiness---through a
lifelong delight in the disciplines.
Forensic Faith Teacher: Nathan Lykkegaard
Why Are You A Christian?
J. Warner Wallace has asked this question in churches
across America over the past several years, and the answer
he gets is often disappointing; it’s almost always rooted in
some sort of personal, subjective experience. As a
community, we Christians aren’t typically prepared to
make the case for why we believe Christianity is true from
the objective evidence of history, philosophy or science.
Worse yet, many of us don’t think we have any obligation
to do so.

Living By the Book Teacher: Pastor Matt Slippy
Far from being mundane, exploring God’s Word can be one
of the greatest adventures of your life! In the Bible you can
interact with a living God who wants a personal
relationship with you. Millions around the world have been
captivated by Dr. Howard Hendricks energetic style,
friendly manner, unforgettable illustrations, and laugh-out-
loud humor. Your experience in the scripture will never be
the same. And your life will be transformed as you begin
Living By the Book!
During this 8-week study, in a simple step-by-step fashion,
you will learn to:
Observe: Learn what to look for when interpreting the
Bible, such as repeated phrases, key words, parallelism.
Interpret: Learn how to put together what you’ve
observed to help you arrive at a passage’s meaning.
Apply: Learn how to take a passage from its page to
your life, letting it transform you.
The Bible isn’t meant to be a puzzle to piece together, but a
gift to explore! This study will make the Bible more
accessible to you than you ever thought possible.
