Meet your local yoga/relaxation

instructor

Hello, my name is Jacquelyn Rae. My fam-

ily and I moved to North Glenora from

Beaumont almost four years ago. I have

enjoyed getting to know the wonderful

people of North Glenora in my role as a

Block Connector. When the NGCL pre-

sented me with the opportunity to offer

yoga and relaxation classes at our local

hall, it seemed like another great way for

me to be of service and connect with the

local community.

My explorations with yoga have been on-

going for almost twenty years. In my

youth, I studied dance. I first came to yo-

ga when I was having trouble finding an

adult dance class. Right away, I enjoyed

the physical benefits of yoga, but I soon

realized that yoga had much more to offer

me. The greatest benefit I receive from

my yoga and relaxation practices is self-

knowledge. I have come to realize that

the more I understand about myself, the

better equipped I am to serve my body

and my life.

Getting to better know myself through

yoga and yoga nidra relaxation has been

both empowering and healing on a life

changing scale. This opportunity for self-

discovery is something I am passionate

about providing to others and is the rea-

son I began teaching yoga in 2006. It is my

heart’s desire to empower people to en-

hance their lives.

Whether you are looking to build strength,

increase flexibility, authentically relax or

just learn more about yourself, I have

tools to assist you. I invite you to come

and experience one of my classes. If you

have any questions or would like a current

class schedule, please

email me at jacquelyn-

[email protected].

The Village GREEN - 5 Tips for a GREENER School Year

Erin Olefeldt

It’s hard to believe it’s time to start another school year! While most of us will have everything organized for back-to-school by the time this article is delivered, here are a few tips for how we can make environmentally sustainable choices for our kids at the start of the school year and throughout.

1. Lunches The average student’s lunch produces around 65 lbs of waste per school year with the average school generating 18,700 lbs of lunch waste per year. Packing a lunch each day (or the night before) is a great way to help reduce unnecessary waste. I love the leak-proof bento-style boxes that eliminate the need to send sandwich bags and various containers with their sometimes hard to find matching lids. My kids have Yumbox , and while the cost seemed expensive upfront, the convenience and money saved on any packaged goods make it well worth it. I’ve heard good things about Bentgo and Planetbox as well. Getting a good stainless steel water bottle is great too. Kids don’t need a juice every day at lunch. If yours are used to juice, you can do a mix of half juice, half water in the bottle for the first few weeks and then make the switch to only water. Sometimes mine like a little lemon and ice in theirs to make it fancy. This eliminates a lot of waste and reduces the amount of sugar our kids are consuming too!

2. School Supplies I like to do an inventory of what school supplies we already have and then only buy what’s needed. I take one of their plastic pencil boxes and create sets of markers, crayons, and pencil crayons with what we have at home. You can look online to get a list of the colours included in a Crayola crayon box and voila! It’s easier on the budget this way too! 3. Clothing Second only to the oil industry, the clothing industry is a major source of the world’s pollution. From the exorbitant water consumption required to produce cotton to the toxic dyes used to colour our clothing, this industry is contaminating rivers and causing serious health problems for people and wildlife living anywhere clothing factories exist. Asking family for hand-me-downs and shopping second hand is a great way to cut down on pollution and save money at the same time. If you’re in dire need of new clothing because your nephew wore out all of his pants this year, I recommend H&M, because they are striving towards greater environmental and social responsibility. 4. Idling I know our winters are cold, but please don’t idle outside of the school. Idling is actually a major source of smog and smog can aggravate asthma, induce and aggravate respiratory infections and aggravate allergies. I live near the school and in

the winter, the smog from vehicle exhaust is so thick, I have to rush home with my preschooler. 5. Talk to your kids about these and other sustainable choices It helps to talk with your kids about why they aren’t getting all the brand new stuff they want. Without crushing their spirits, we can explain why some choices are better than others, why It’s so important to reuse, and hopefully raise children who will grow into adults that don’t manufacture harmful products in the first place.

Update: NGCL Planning and Transportation Committee

-Survey Summary -Sarah Ramey, July 22, 2019

1. Who is the P&T Committee: Jason Ness- outgoing committee

chair, Eve Poirier – co-chair, Sandy Sift – co-chair, Suzanne McAFee,

Karen Zypchyn, Jena Tufts, David Caskenette

2. NGCL Planning and Transportation Committee Rezoning

Survey

A land development application has been submitted by Dualita on

behalf of Verona Development. The application is to rezone land at

the southeast corner of 109 avenue and 135 street to a DC2 provi-

sion that would allow for the development of a 4 storey building

with 28 residential units and small scale commercial options.

As a result of this proposal the NGCL planning and transportation

committee embarked on a survey to better understand the commu-

nity’s response to the rezoning application. The survey was available

in the June community newsletter and at the June 18th, City of Ed-

monton public engagement session held at the Westmount Presby-

terian Church. At this event the City also collected feedback, and

this feedback is available in aggregate format on the City’s website

Edmonton.ca/NorthGlenora and directly at https://

www.edmonton.ca/residential_neighbourhoods/neighbourhoods/

north-glenora-planning-applications.aspx

The Planning and Transportation Committee decided to conduct its

own survey of community residents as a result of the divisive feed-

back we received concerning the small scale commercial aspect of

the rezoning application. We received 43 surveys. This is a high level

overview of what we heard:

• 30 respondents do not support the rezoning application

• Of the 30 “no” respondents, 19 are opposed to all commercial

use.

• Of the 30 “no” respondents, 7 are opposed to some commercial

use.

• Of the 30 “no” respondents, 14 are either independently or ad-

ditionally opposed to the height/scale of the proposed develop-

ment.

• 12 respondents support the rezoning application as presented.

• 1 respondent was not opposed to the application but had some

reservations.

Many respondents listed commercial uses they were opposed to,

even if they responded that they were opposed to all commercial

uses. Predominantly the opposition was to pubs/bars; liquor stores;

cannabis stores; vape shops; convenience stores. It is notable that

many of these uses identified would be prohibited due to the prox-

imity of the location to schools, parks and community buildings. Re-

gardless we will pass along the full response to the City so they can

amalgamate this information with the information they collected at

their engagement session.

In the other comments field of the survey, key themes emerged:

• Concern around increased traffic as a result of additional units

and potential commercial activity

• Concern around increased noise as a result of additional units

and potential commercial activity

• Concern around increased pedestrian presence late into the

evening as a result of additional units and potential commercial

activity

• Concern around the impact that an underground parking facility

might have on drainage of surrounding residential areas.

Next steps:

• Provide executive summary, raw data, and copy of P&T survey

to Sarah Ramey, City of Edmonton planner to ensure input is

amalgamated into engagement session results.

• Report findings to the community.

• Notify community when the rezoning application is scheduled

for City Council hearing.

Note: Change from Condominium to Rental Units.

When the developers attended a NGCL Executive Meeting (early

spring 2019) to present on the proposed rezoning application and

provide an overview of the development, the proposal as presented

was a 28 unit condominium. As of the public engagement session

(June 18, 2019) the development proposal had changed to rental

units. This was unknown to the P&T Committee at the time we initi-

ated the survey. If this change might alter your response to the pro-

posal, we encourage you to contact the City planner, Sarah Ramey

780-496-6214 or [email protected].

Sincerely,

Eve Poirier – co-chair NGCL P&T Committee.
