Heat Related Illness

With the return of warmer weather, Alberta Health Services EMS would like to remind citizens to stay safe in the heat and sun this summer. While children and the elderly can be more susceptible to the effects of heat, basic prevention measures should be taken by all to avoid a heat related illness during periods of hot and humid weather.

Heat stroke• Heat stroke is a medical emergency

that requires prompt treatment. It can be fatal.

• It occurs when the body can’t cool itself naturally (e.g. perspiration). The body’s temperature will continue to rise to dangerous levels.

• Due to severe dehydration and the inability to sweat the patient may appear flushed and skin may be hot and dry to the touch.

Heat exhaustion• Heat exhaustion can occur due to

excessive fluid loss during periods of prolonged sweating in a hot and /or humid environment (indoors or outdoors).

• Patients may suffer headaches, weakness, fatigue, nausea /vomiting, thirst, chills, and profusesweating.

• The patient is usually cold and damp to the touch and the skin may appear pale or dusky gray.

First aid• First aid for all heat related

illness begins with removing or sheltering the patient from the hot environment.

• Remove excess or tight fitting clothing and allow them to rest in a cool environment.

• If the patient is conscious and alert, provide suitable fluids such as water, juice, or a sports drink.

• If you are concerned, seek medical attention or call 9-1-1.

Prevention• Stay well-hydrated by drinking

plenty of water. • Limit alcohol consumption as

alcohol dehydrates you. • Always wear a broad brimmed

hat to keep the sun off your face and neck.

• Apply waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of 50+, especially for children. The sun’s UV rays peak between 10am-4pm, even on cloudy days.

Hope you can join in on the fun and remember: two WONGs can make a right . . . or a left!

Security Update Summer has finally arrived, and school is almost done for the year. Not only will families be relaxing and enjoying vacations away from home, but also taking part in the summer activities right here in North Glenora. The warm weather has already seen the playground full of smiling faces and play, which is so wonderful to see. Sadly, there have been some reports of bullying and inappropriate behaviour by some older children towards some of younger children in and around the park.

Our EPS liaison is aware of these incidents and takes them very seriously. As security liaison for North Glenora, I agree this is not acceptable very and want to ensure the park, and our entire community remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone. Hopefully, these were isolated incidents, but in the event of future problems, there are avenues to take, to help address concerns.

If you are aware of or observe anything of concern in our community, please connect with me either by email, at [email protected] or by phone at 780.667.4228. If the matter is of a more urgent nature, I encourage you to also make a report to EPS on the non emergency complaint line 780.423.4567. Any and all reports of problems in North Glenora are brought to the attention of our liaison with the police, and helps them to make decisions regarding changes to their presence in North Glenora. If you do connect with EPS directly, please also keep me in the loop, so I can follow up with our police liaison directly.

Wishing everyone in our wonderful community a safe and fun summer!

Questions I’m asked about feeding birds

By Dave Cleary of Wild Birds Unlimited on the corner of 122 St and 107 Ave in Edmonton

Q: Why feed birds in summer?People who only feed the birds during the winter miss out on summer bird feeding fun and fascinating wild bird ‘family life’ activities. Fledglings are leaving the nest and many, like woodpeckers, are taught to eat from feeders by their parents; a fascinating interaction to ob-serve. You can recognize Downy and other woodpecker fledglings by their fresh and dapper plumage, whereas that of the adults is worn and dusky from their repeated trips in and out of the nest cavity. After a few weeks, the parents stop feeding their fledglings and may even peck at them if they persist in begging for food to get them to feed themselves. Fledglings require a lot of protein and calcium to help them grow strong, properly-coloured feathers and strong flight muscles. Help your birds with

high-protein foods like mealworms, pea-nuts, Bark Butter® and suet. These energy-packed foods will entice your woodpeckers to bring their young to your feeders as they teach them where to find foods. Don’t miss out on this great time of year to feed young woodpeckers and lots of other newly fledg-ing birds.

Q: How can I attract birds in the summer with water? To attract the greatest variety of birds to your yard, provide a source of water along with your feeders. Birds prefer to bathe and

drink in different depths of water. Use a bath with a sloped edge or add stones to vary the depth so birds can bathe comfortably. Place your bath 10 to 12 feet from shrubs so predators can’t surprise the birds. Shrubs also offer birds a place to preen their feathers and dry off. You will attract more birds with moving water. Use a Water Wiggler™ to create motion. Regular cleaning will help reduce algae and is good for your birds’ health. Scrub your bath regularly with a brush, rinse well, and replace with fresh water.

Dave Cleary and Jan Chapman are owners of Wild Birds Unlimited at the corner of 122 St and 107 Ave on the north-side in Edmonton. The mission of Wild Birds Unlimited is to bring people and nature together. See their website at www.wbu.com/edmonton or call them at 587-521-2473.

City Changes Rules to Allow Skinny Homes and Garage Suites

Westmount Presbyterian Church Development UpdateOn June 9, neighbouring residents to the Westmount Presbyterian Church (WPC) received a letter to say that the WPC had submitted their application to rezone. A site plan, elevation and recap of the community’s feedback to the developers can be found online at http://northglenora.org/development/westmount-presbyterian-church/ Residents interested in following progress of the application can find it at http://maps.edmonton.ca

The developers have committed to holding a public meeting for residents to reiterate the feedback they have received and how it has influenced their project. The meeting will occur in late August or September. Your opinion regarding this application is important. If you have any questions or comments, please write, call or email: Nola Kilmartin, PlannerCity Wide PlanningPhone Number: 780-944-0123Email Address: [email protected]

On April 13 , after a two-day public hearing, city council voted nine to two to make changes to the zoning bylaw and allow the subdivision of lots that are a minimum of 50 feet wide, as well as to expand the locations where garden and garage suites could be located. These changes effect properties that are zoned RF1 (Single Detached Residential Zone) and include a significant portion of North Glenora.

Lots that are zoned RF3 have been able to be subdivided since 2012. North Glenora has only one lot with this zoning, but neighbourhoods such as Westmount, King Edward Park and Bonny Doon have a large number of lots zoned this way, and have seen a few of these lots subdivided. The typical redevelopment sees one old house replaced by two skinny houses, which are typically 17-feet wide, two stories and 1,400 to 1,900 square feet. Skinny houses must conform to all the same requirements as any other home as specified in the mature neighborhood overlay regulations, including meeting the maximum height, minimum setbacks, as well as lot coverage and parking restrictions.

Garage suites were previously allowed in certain locations in North Glenora (on corner lots, lots fronting

onto a service road and on lots adjacent to row housing or apartments housing). They are now a discretionary use on any RF1 lot. The height restrictions have also been eased. This change allows garage suites to be up to 5 feet higher than the principal residence, to a maximum height of 21.3 feet.

The reason for this change was that the previous rules capped the height of a garage suite at the height of the principal residence. This made it impossible to build a garage suite that met the regulations if the principal residence was a bungalow.

Some of the reasons given for making the changes included: giving people more housing options, using city infrastructure more efficiently (i.e. the sewer pipes are already there and they have to plow the street no matter how many people live on a block), as well as to allow increased density to better support public transportation and to increase the utilization of our schools. The general sentiment from council was that it would be likely that any one neighborhood would only see a few pairs of skinny homes per year and a few garage suites, and that they would have very little if any effect on the feel or character of the neighbourhood.
